 Revenge! Wasted some match points, but managed to close it out. It would have been awful if she lost to Stephy twice in a row.

Steph

No one can ever say that her other match in Montreal was only crowd based though. I think she proved that to everyone.

I think the Montreal match was in some ways crowd based but the fact Steph won the first time gave her some confidence in the second. :)

Great work, Maria.

Go Kirilenko, but why did she have to go 3 sets with Dubois again? Is Dubois rapidly improving or is Kirilenko not playing well?

Probably a mix of both. Steph is improving so much but Masha has not been at her best or close to it in this tournament.

 Dubois is a much better player than her ranking. And it was their second match. Sometimes players struggle against certain players. The main thing is that they win. I can't count how many times amazing players like Venus or Serena struggle against lower ranked opponents. The main thing is that they win.

I saw the third set of this match - Maria did a really good job of throwing in loopy balls and then coming into the net to finish off points. I also got to watch her practice yesterday - her coach was very nice but it didn't seem like Maria listened to him very much, lol.

Even in her slump she still made a GS quarter final.

They laughed with each other - he was wanting her to work on a slice backhand, and she hit a few and then said she wanted to hit flat instead. He also made a joke about how bad his eyesight is :)

Do you know Maria personally?

Nah.

But Maria and his daughter are quite close :) They are a few pictures and she brought her to a player's party as well :D

I saw Stephanie in her 1R and she is really motivated. She fights for every point.

She and her coach are in touch as much as possible - she looks at him a lot, after most points, and he calls things to her throughout the match, like applauding a good point or encouraging her for the next point.

I wonder if they are an item... does anybody know?

:weirdo: Good for her, but Nicole doesn't even play close to "top-notch" any more, so I'm pretty sure Marion would win if they played right now. :wavey:

Obviously couldn't shut out the horrible memories of her loss to Steph a couple of weeks ago. It shouldn't have been this tought to close her out, but hopefully now that she has her revenge she can start to play better.

Why is everyone so hard on Kirilenko? It's obvious she is struggling mentally and is trying to get some hardcourt form. She won the match and Stephanie may be a great player.

Coming back from 1/3 down is a good sign. You get better as a tennis player by finding out a way to win.

Yeah, I'm hoping.

You should ask to CD but as far as I know Steph has a boyfriend and it isn't Simon Larose (her coach) :p

Great work for Steph..I was expecting Maria too win easier than that so good work..that first set score ...it looks pretty much like MOntreal lol

They are not together, Steph has a long-time (3-4 years) boyfriend. But Simon is such a great coach for Steph. Funny, laid back, but also always there for her. She is a very relaxed person in life, and her former coaches were too rigid for her. Simon knows about what it is to be a player, have pressure on your shoulders, and he is great on the mental side.

Glad to see Steph is quite into it, I know she always has been but in the past month or so (post-Wimby-and-horrible-Chaky-experience) she really has stepped it up.
