View Full Version : For all the injury talk, Quarterfinals looking GOOD

Now the tournament really gets started...

We've had the injuries and withdrawals and what appeared to be a dismal tournament but with tomorrow's line-up, things are shaping up quite nicely. Win tomorrow and you're guaranteed 2 more matches - putting yourself in the running for a bronze medal.

Let's examine the matchups

Vera v Bammer - Vera leads 2-0 in H2H. Both matches going 3 sets including this year when Vera took the 3rd set 6-0. Expect another 3-setter with Vera moving on to the medal rounds.

Venus v Na Li - This will be the first match-up between these two ladies. Advantage LI because Venus normally has problems with 1st time opponents. But this is the Olympics and Venus really wants another Gold. Her confidence is normally high after winning Wimbledon so expect Venus to find a way to pull this out.

Jankovic v Safina - The Safinator is taking down everything and everyone in her path. She looked great today and almost seems unbeatable. Jankovic will definitely push her but with Dinara's confidence soaring like it is, I expect Safina to win it. They are tied 2-2 in H2H competition. Safina took the last match just 2 weeks ago in LA. Also, if Jelena is really telling the truth about her injuries, there's no way she wins this. But I suspect she has exaggerated the injury.

Serena v Dementieva - It's like the good old days of USA v Russia. Undoubtedly, the match of the day. The last meeting went to Elena 6-1 in the third. Will Serena get revenge or will Elena start a winning streak against the 8 time slam champion? Serena leads H2H 4-1 but her last victory was in 2004. I suspect Serena is coming to this match ready to fight. Elena will try to draw upon the magic her game exhibited last year in Moscow. This one is a toss-up. If Serena serves well, she takes this. If not, Elena just might pull off the upset.

I think Serena will win she is not injured and she will punish that powder puff serve

People complain too much? Nothing new. That looks like a nice quarterfinal lineup to me.

I'm so glad that OG attracts the players who really want to play.
Not only singles,but also doubles.

The only one that is not even remotely interesting is the first QF. I agree though, nice lineup.

Venus vs. Na Li....yes, Venus in the past struggles with surprise first-time opponents...but I still expect her to win this. but gosh, the unforced error count in this match is gonna be a hot messss.

I think Vee is going to win,she moves better than Na Li who might not be fully recovered from her knee injury.Venus wants a medal bad and she will fight for that medal:bounce:

Good stories all around. As host, China deserved to get someone in medal contention, Bammer as the lefty is a wildcard, Serbia is still alive, plus the expected Russia and U.S. contingent.

I assume that V. Williams or Safina becomes the US Open favorite if they win.

Absolutely. For all the talk how tennis doesn´t belong in the Olympics, it´s safe to say no more Massu or Rosset. The best players are coming through on both sides Federer, Nadal, Djokovic, Williams sisters, Safina, Dementieva and from her death bed Jankovic. Okay these austrians in the quarters are a bit confusing, but otherwise...

I agree! So many withdrawals and injuries, but still we only have two unseeded players in the quarters.

Jelena vs Dinara is probably the match I'm looking forward to the most, although it's two of my favourites against each other. If both play at their very best, it should be very interesting.

One thing is for sure: Bammer to take the bronze.

WTF?!!! :weirdo:
Her movement was subpar today compared to her regular level. She didn't even tried to run down at least dozen of balls that she would've easily caught when she's phisically OK.
I expect in semis Bepa, LenaD, Safina (naturally I would like JJ) and (hopefully) Na Li

Somehow I feel Li is dangerous for Venus.
But top half don't look GOOD for me.

Olympics tournaments NEVER have problems with field in womans competition and fact is that 8 of 10 finalist from past is TOP3 seeds... even at YEC's where compete TOP8 only we dont have such high percentage. When this season starts OG is for sure one of biggest priorities for four biggest stars which not compete here - Henin, Sharapova, Ivanovic and Mauresmo, and only trgic occasions prevent their to compete.

So this OG will be remembered like "hystorical" only in mans competition where they finaly got same status like tennis always have in womans competition - most important tournament after slams (so more important and prestiguos than any of masters series or even YEC!).

I personaly dont see that things will be worse for Olympics tennis in London 2012 and actualy i dont be surprised if 2012 "Seasons 2nd Wimbledon" will be new improvment and "next step" for tennis status at OG.

I can't believe I have to get up at 4am to watch these quarters. Blake & Federer is at 4 too. I'm sure Fed is winning that as Blake always lays down for Roger. Serena-Dementieva is 1st up on Court 2 & that's the match I'm looking forward to the most.

Serena needs to serve into her body all day long. lol
