View Full Version : OG QF: [4] Serena Williams vs [5] Elena Dementieva

Elena won their last meeting with two crunchy break sticks :lick:, hasn't dropped a set and is looking good.

Serena nearly lost to a played who had won just 1 match on the hard court.

Who will win?

I expect Dementieva to play out of her mind.

but in the end it's not completely in Dementieva's hands. If Serena serves and returns well it's over. But Serena showed some vulnerability so who knows...

Serena will need to be ready cuz Dementieva's is going to give her hell.

Elena, as far as I can tell, exist at least in part to rip my heart out at least once a month.

Serena seems to derive equal satisfaction from plunging her hand through my ribcage and extricating my internal organs.

I want a repeat of Moscow, but I'm not counting on it.

Well, Serena is due for a clean match after her third round and she knows that Dementieva can be a dangerous player, so I expect Serena to win in straights. Serena really wants to win the gold medal, she was pumping her fist even when the match against Cornet was over.

K-Dog
Aug 13th, 2008, 02:40 PM
It depends on how Serena comes out. If she's ready to play first strike tennis and is clean with it, she wins. If Serena comes out passive, she better hope that Elena has a mental meltdown. Long rallies will favor Dementieva. As long as Serena serves well and gets on top of the returns, she's going to win. If not, well, it'll probably be a battle that favors Elena. Tough match.

Serena fans are overconfident. Elena playing for her country can be very scary. Elena can match Serena from the ground.. the serve and return of serve however are so heavily in Serena's favor that it's hard not to pick her in this matchup.

Serena in 2 tight sets.

I really can see Craybas winning it. She's been rested and must be fresh as a daisy!

But seriously I think Lena will fight hard as hell, but in the end won't make it against Serena. I was hoping Serena could easily beat Cornet and save up her bad match for the QF's. A tough three-seter like this only makes Serena stronger and more focused.

This being said - I hope Lena can pull off a surprise!

Elena could most definitely win this.

She could find a way to break and really make her shots. She could play the best match of her life here and beat Serena.

But i don't think this is happening, Serena should win this very easily. If she serves well and is smart, this match is hers. Russian scouts were watching Serena so this should be very interesting!

I am looking forward to this so much, i love Lena~!

Dementieva is a better player indoors than outdoors, generally, when it comes to the fundamentals, and forcing her to be more aggressive. These two player's matches indoors have been their tightest affairs, and Serena was hitting through the court crisply today. Cornet's defense, movement, and anticipation is nothing that of Dementieva's, nor does she have the consistent pace to battle Serena, although Cornet, obviously, displayed herself really well today. Alize found a second wind, but she was obviously tired by the middle of the second set. The result was never in doubt at that point.

Tomorrow could be a little different. Both are at or near their best on an outdoor hardcourt. I thought Dementieva served incredibly well in Moscow, and nothing she's shown in Beijing has shown she's quite gotten that level of serving again. That said, many of her best wins have come in the name of Russia.

I don't know who wins. Serena should do it, but I think Elena has the possibility to out last her a little longer, particularly if Serena has a hard time hitting her off the court, and Elena's defensive abilities are in full bloom.

the fact that Serena is a much poorer mover now gives Dementieva a bigger chance than she had in the past. But it hardly means she should beat Serena all the time or even most of the time. If Serena serves well and that's it. Game over. If Serena is returning well too then it'll be over fast.
you make it sound like the match is in Dementievas hands but w/ such a huge liability like her serve it's not.

:help:

She's one of the best movers on tour. Sometimes she looks slow because she gets a lot of balls back that other players wouldn't either stumbling for an error or into a defensive rally. Whenever people play her they aren't able to hit very many clean winners at all.

The fact that Serena is a poorer mover now than in 2002 is only even an issue here because Dementieva is arguably the best mover on tour.

With anyone but her, Venus and Justine (R.I.P) it doesn't even matter.

Serena that we saw in Miami or even Charleston or even Berlin would have had this match in her hands.
Serena that I've seen at Olympics so far has only serve. It was enough for Stosur who doesn't have ground game, it was barely enough for Cornet who's clueless on hardcourts. It will be not enough for Dementieva if Lena mixes up crosscourts and DTL shots.
But there is a huge possibilty Lena will rely on her favorite "let's hit as many forehand crosscourts as we can" game. In that case she has no chances against Serena.

Because her return game was a bit off today, but it hasn't been in her other matches. If Serena hits two or three good returns a game, which she should do off Elena's serve, the match will definitely be dictated by her.

It's hard for Elena, i mean how does she approach this match? Does she look to build momentum in long rallies hoping Serena makes errors, but if Serena hits the first strike in she'll be pasted. Or does she go for the fist big hit in the rally herself which would expose Serena's movement, but in turn would fill her game with errors? AS good as Elena is, i cant see her beating Serena if the error count is higher than usual. She needs to be much more patient, use the angles, especially the backhand CC which would really create chances for her.

Saying that though, if Serena's serve is clicking and her groundstrokes are hit early and accurately, Elena is going to be playing defense for the majority of the match.

Tough one to call, but i'll go with Serena in 3. Cant make such a slow start as today though, doesnt want to give a highly patriotic, former Olympic silver finalist an inch.

As much as I want Lena to win this, Serena certainly is the favourite for tomorrow's match. If her serve is on, which I guess it has been, it's going to be neigh on impossible for Elena to compensate the breaks of serve by breaking back. And we all know she's gonna be broken at some point in the match...
Her game plan ( her what now? :help: ) on her own serve will be the determining factor tomorrow. If she serves and follows up well, we have a match. If she doesn't, things will be very ugly...

I was just looking up some numbers: how Elena's backed up wins against established slam champions. Aside from Majoli and Sanchez Vicario (due to irrelevancy/never losing to them) she's beaten slam champions a second time against Davenport, Pierce, Hingis, Martinez, Myskina, Clijsters, and Kuznetsova.

As slam winners, she's only beaten Venus, Maria, Jennifer, Serena, Justine, and Amelie once. Aside from Lindsay and Martina, those are all the most important ones, anyway. :o

Useless stats, sure, but backing up wins against such heralded names is clearly an issue for Dementieva. And even if you take out the "they have to be a slam champion at this stage" part, beating them a second time in a row in general has been extremely difficult.

Godspeed, Lena.

I hope Dementieva wins. But I also hope Serena wins.

Dementieva, IMO is not gonna win a grand slam, so the Olympics are the next big thing where you still go down in history as an Olympic Gold Medalist!

Serena IMO is probably gonna win 4-5 more grand slams. However, The big singles title missing from her resume is the Olympic singles gold. Imagine legacy she'd create if she wins the gold.

Both girls are gonna come out desperate to win. Both know exactly what's on the line. Dementieva is probably hungry for the glory that's eluded her. Winning here would be the best thing that could happen to her.
Serena's hungry cuz this is likely to be her last chance at the Olympics. After missing out on TWO Olympics singles, this could well and truly be her time.

Either way, the loser is gonna be crushed. So hopefully the winner displays lots of grace and words of consolation.

I think Serena can win in 2 sets hopefully 6/3 6/4. All she need do is to hold her serve and break Lena.

Serena 62 63

Difference is Serena is a champion that can rise to the occasion.

We haven't seen that from Lena on a big stage yet.

OlympicGoldRena.

Serena will smash her.

Serena 6-3 6-4 ...Next

S Williams in straights :)

Serena should win. She wants to get revenge for the Moscow match. Hopefully Serena can win in 2 quick sets. All she has to do is hold serve 6 times and break serve 6 times right?

Serena

6-2 6-0

Serena!

Serena!

I expect Dementieva to play out of her mind.

but in the end it's not completely in Dementieva's hands. If Serena serves and returns well it's over. But Serena showed some vulnerability so who knows...

Serena will need to be ready cuz Dementieva's is going to give her hell.

FreshRena =2 Sets SleepWalking Rena = 3 sets DayDreamingRena= Elena in 2 NervousRena Elena in 3

I am Hoping for a FreshRena,But i'll take a Sleepwalking Rena aswell :P

Well, Serena is due for a clean match after her third round and she knows that Dementieva can be a dangerous player, so I expect Serena to win in straights. Serena really wants to win the gold medal, she was pumping her fist even when the match against Cornet was over.

i think serena in two sets

I can safely say Serena is going to win without a doubt!!visit this thread tomorrow:bounce:

 I'm not sure for this result. I think Serena will win in 3 - 4;6 6;2 6;3.

Serena fans are overconfident. Elena playing for her country can be very scary. Elena can match Serena from the ground.. the serve and return of serve however are so heavily in Serena's favor that it's hard not to pick her in this matchup.

Serena in 2 tight sets.

Serena 6-1 6-0

:bounce::woohoo:Serena:D

I will go for Serena in 2 sets.

Serena in two competitive sets :D

If she does win Elena will have been just the test she needs.

Serena.. 7-5. 6-4

Serena in 3

Serena.

Nobody intimidates a weak server the way she can, if she's playing well and serving well Lena will loose in straights.

If Serena plays decent, she'll win in 2.

Serena in straights please:devil:

Serena 64 60.

I expect S.Williams to get it done.

Serena. Two sets if her serve is on, two tight sets if not. COME ON SERENA!! :bounce:

just because she won against serena doesn't mean she is a good player
whats wrong with her --> her serve
as soon as she gets anyone who can hold serve she will lose pronto
fortunately for her 90% of the tour can't hold serve consistently
thats why she is the perennial bridesmaid because someone or the other will serve rock solid in at least one of the 7 matches

Just give it a little more time, elena is playing better then she ever did. We saw it in the spring when she did well in the first half of the season(wierd) winning dubai and reaching semi's and finals. Was so close to the semi in paris but choked. Then reached the wimbysemi out of nowhere and now we get to the part of the season where she normally is the best. Outdoor hard and indoor. (and no pova to punish her:tape:) If she keeps getting better and better we're gonna see a lena we never saw before.

KEEP GOING ELENA, MAKE THIS YOUR SUMMER! :bounce:

This statement is evidently untrue considering Serena wasn't broken today until 6-3 4-3.

I love how people think her serve is still some huge liability. It doesn't get her a lot of cheap points (rare on the women's side anyway), but the DF count is drastically lower, she gets decent enough placement, and she can hit to the FH or BH on the serve.

I honestly think people haven't watched her play since 2006? mid 2007? Choking big leads in RG, Wimbledon, and now Olympics doesn't mean her serve is the problem, per se. Her groundstrokes abandoned her in those times. That's all.

serena's loss today was due to her vastly inferior movement
but elena's serve is what causes her to lose matches
in crunch situations when matches are going on serve like 3-3 or 4-4 you cant rely on elena to hold serve and put the pressure on the other to hold

In crunch situations this year, it's been her BH which has let her down badly. Not her serve.

thats why she is in top 10 and has reached two slam finals
and in these weak times just like 2004 she can get more slam finals or even a slam :help:
the beatdowns that she receives against maria are the best example of what a solid server can do to her

Elenas results really do not reflect her true talent IMO,she's beaten SO many top ranked players these past 8 years and although a 2-time GS finalist is nothing to be sad about, she just needs to take that extra step and TAKE the title! She's had wonderful results this year already and getting back to the top 5, I still believe she can achieve greatness!

Pressure.

Elena is also vulnerable to being overpowered from big hitters. When Elena is playing well, she is in every point, she is fighting, slugging it out. That requires alot of intensity and puts alot of strain on her mind. It's tough to do that through a number of matches and come through to win a Slam or something. This year, her consistency has hugely improved, which can only be put down to a more reliable serve.

I realy wouldn't be surprised if she lost to Vera in the semis, if Vera isn't tight.

Still, Elena's resume is not that bad. She has been one of the most solid players of this generation. She has also been a huge part of tennis in Russia, which has become the strongest tennis country.
