Definately not the 'clean' performance Serena said she wanted but played decent in 2nd and third sets. Alize played very well throughout but Serena notchede it up a level when needed....

Serena :) amazing serving in the 3rd set.
Alize did play really well in the 1st set though. Some of here dtl winners were  but she was struggling getting the 1st serve in the last two sets. Still, she's a much better player on hardcourts than made out to be.

hmm...what happened in the 1st set??

cornet played well. But wow Serena on serve in that last set was goood. Either service winner, ace, or just a flat out winner off the ground. too bad she was a mess off Cornet's serve. But Serena was clearly getting tight out there so it was good effort by her to close out the match. great net point. actually watching that last set my only guess is that Serena must have been making some errors in that first set. cuz she was dominant off the ground and serve.

Keep improving Cornet, and work on not dropping that forehand short or else you'll get crushed. I expect her to be real tough on clay and now a force at AO and maybe USO. Alize is a fresh face that needs to get her butt in the top 10 asap and later rounds of slams asap.

Fun match. Serena didn't play her best, even though she picked it up in sets 2 and 3, but Cornet played quite well.

OK Serena, now time to demolish Dementieva-I won't mind if Ree serves a double bagel to the serveless wonder.

It was closed.Alize put up a good fight but didn't manage to finish the points when she had the opportunity in the 3rd set.Serena's serve really made the difference at the end (and Cornet lack of serve as well.Serena was punishing those second serves).
Top10 next year for Cornet I think.

Ugh. Once again, when Serena gets herself out of a tight spot, people on GM call her a great champion and fighter. But if, say, one of the Serbs or even Sharapova does that, they're called "unworthy no.1/no.2/no.3", "overrated", "shoddy", etc. Apparently everyone except Serena, Venus and the bandwagon players like Burrito or Dina will never be great champions. :help:

I tought it was a great match, despite the fact that Serena wasn´t playing well in the first set.
Cornet is a good player and made things difficult for Serena.

 Smashing a racket always seems to work for Serena. Serena should beat Dementieva.

I am not stressing that there is a lack of praise and credit where it is due. I'm just saying that people are not only not giving credit but rather labelling them as shoddy, pathetic wannabes. Maybe Serena is a better player than Ana, Jelena and Maria, etc. combined, and she has won so many slams but so what? Yes she is a fabulous player, maybe one of the best ever, but look, just the negative responses after the Jelena/Maria/Ana marathons at AO, RG and Wimbly early where they were very close to losing was pretty bad.

This is what I worry about when Serena plays these days. I know the game will be there but the nerves is holding her back now. Hopefully, she can overcome this because in my opinion this is keeping her out of the #1 spot.

Actually she didn't start slow. She broke Alize's serve to 15 in the first game and then lost 4 games in a row :help:. Alize was hitting the lines and Serena was playing pretty crappy off the ground and not serving well enough to bail herself out of trouble.

Basically, in the 2nd and 3rd sets, the big return and big serve got her through a tight spot.

They play everyday, singles and doubles, and sometimes both like tomorrow. It hasn't been live on any network yet so I just catch it everyday on the NBC online stream. And Serena plays at 4 a.m. my time (1 a.m. your time) tonight/tomorrow morning. Serena was unsure of herself after she got broken in the first set (she was serving to consolidate the break she had gotten). Alize was playing very well and just hitting lines. Looks like Serena has gained some weight again, she has some trouble moving. Alizee moved her around many times in the first set. Or maybe her knee is not 100% ok. I hope she gets one day's rest before her quarter.

sadly she won't have time to rest and she's playing doubles also...hopefully this doesn't mean that she has to quit the us open, because of too much playing with a not 100% healthy knee :awww:

Serena got at her place around midnight, she plays at 4pm and then plays doubles around 9pm. That's not hard for Serena.

I'm very surprised that Serena stuggled so much, especially after the way she demolished Stosur.

But, a win is a win... destroy Dementieva!!

Go for the SILVER Serena!! ;)

If Serena can walk, she's playing the Open.

She played well Alize Cornet, but Serena had more experience. She played better when it mattered most. It all comes down to experience and Serena has a ton of it. Lets see if she can avoid a letdown against dementieva or not.
