Great match, Venus was being patient and not making much errors and running everything down and Vika would then be forced to go for too much and make errors.
Venus fix the backhand return:help:
Great match though from Vee:banana:

Venus, another good match I'd say considering what it looked like it could have been in the opening. Angerenka was just making so many mistakes though, Venus didn't really need to bring her A game so we'll see how she does against Na Li.

COME ON VENUS!! :woohoo:

A nice solid win for Venus. Isn't Azarenka the highest ranked player Venus has beaten on hardcourts this year? Not to mention Azarenka has been playing great tennis the last 3 months.

Other than the backhand return of serve, Venus looked really good. She served well too, even on the 2nd serve-Azarenka couldn't really attack it that much.

Keep up the good form against Li tomorrow!!

My vee & vika looked a mess to me lol...watching the whole thing I said neither is playing up to 30% of their potential. Vika got her share of winners but she hit a million doublefaults and her returns we're ok and then she'd hit one out of the stadium lol..and David better pound away at Venus backhand on serve because the return was not their today. Go Vee and win it all!

Can someone explain to me why people constantly go on about Azarenka?

I mean, I haven't watched her today, but the few times I'm watched her, I haven't been that impressed. She does hit winners, but she's not exactly someone who looks like she could be a potential slam winner. I feel she lacks something in her game, and to me, it's not something that she will get. I keep seeing people here saying she will be Top 5 next year, and it just baffles me.

And her record against Top 10 players is 3-13. And 2 of those wins came against slumping players in Petrova of 2007 and Chakvetadze of 2008 :o

Venus did what she needed to do. However, Azarenka was ATROCIOUS. She slammed her racquet to the ground several times and for good reason. The talent is definitely there, but she was spraying shots all over the court, making a bunch of DF's. Not much was working for her today.

I was curious before the match what everyone meant by the return issues. I don't know wtf Venus is thinking, but why would anyone stand that far inside the baseline on a court this fast??? Azarenka does not have a weak serve and Venus often does not have enough time to react on the serve today. One game she went from 0-30 returning and then lost the game on 4 straight unreturned serves. :smash: Rethink that strategy because you'll need good returning against better opponents.

Venus is just that confident atm. She might be working on things in prep for the USO. Venus doesn't play any big servers until maybe the finals, so she should be okay. She probably won't be so far inside the baseline against Serena if they were to play in the gold medal match. That would be indeed stupid and she'll probably pay the price for that.

Venus is winning comfortably now. You really can't ask for much more especially since this is her first event since Wimby. I'm not really going to complain until she loses a set or a match.

You're right. The only reason it worries me is b/c this is one of the major reasons she lost to Henin at USO last year in 2 sets. She never stepped back despite the fact that standing that close was an obvious disadvantage.

Safina can serve pretty well. If they meet, I hope she's not standing too close inside the baseline.

EDIT: btw, corrected my post above. She does not have a weak serve.

Yeah, Venus was stupid in that match against Justine. Serena did the same thing. Justine's serve had so much spin on it that returning so close was jamming Serena and Venus time after time.

Safina can serve well in streaks, but her serve is still nothing like the woman that Venus practices with. Like I said, Venus will have to contend with a big server later. Na can't serve that well and Dinara, the bigger serve on Venus' side of the draw, is not a guarantee to make it to the semis if Jelena has revenge in mind and isn't injured.

This is Venus's natural hair. It's not chemically treated or has any weave. She just has it pulled up in an afro poof. Hope this helps

And that's the spirit coming from someone who has followed Vee from the beginning. It's pointless to nitpick her forehand, backhand, serve or her game at this stage. Bottom-line, she will win some and lose some

That's very true. She's 28. This is the game she has. I know how good it can be and how bad it can be. Nothing surprises me anymore. Sports are about winning and losing. As long as Venus is happy playing and working hard at her game, the results with come. I can't ask for more from my favs other than that they work hard and give it their all on court.

I think Na Li will be tough for Venus. She is playing well. That said, Venus does better against ball bashers than retrievers so if Venus is on she should win in 2 if not in 3.

I do think Vika will win a slam because people talk about how she can't be the top players, but I like that she's playing them. She's hardly dropping games/sets to the players below so eventually her breakthrough will come. Not to mention Vika is young, and she's my 3rd fav behind Vee & Ree and if you watched the match or if you can go watch it now(it's available as an encore) then you will see the game in her just from the first 4 games...especially game 3 of the 1st set.
