This may have been discussed already but if Serena wins gold in Beijing, she will move up to #3 only approx. 9 points behind Ivanovic for #2. She has qtr final points to defend in NY and with the way she's playing she's a good pick to move beyond the qtrs. Should she do that she shoud more than make up the 100 or so points she'll need to overtake Jankovic. Of course we'll have to wait and see what Jankovic does but I'm more confident about Serena going deep in NY that Jankovic. Any thoughts?

Actually Serena will be 8 points behind Ana for the #1 spot if she wins Bejing....

She should be #1 post the Open if Ana keeps playing poorly, but Ana's not defending much att he open.....

Is Jankovic going to lose her points from last years Toronto after this week? That makes it even more certain that Serena will rise to #1 should she do well their! I have no confidence in Ivanovic's thumb or Jankovic's overall fitness.

If that doesn't happen after the USO, Serena will certainly be nr1 at the end of the year or early next year.

She doesn't have a lot to defend

I actually think that she will be 8 points behind the NR 1 instead of NR 2.
Cause I don't see a Serena - Jelena final happen here.

If Ana won't play US Open or is less than 100% there, then there's a high possibilty that Serena will be nr 1.

Not that I'm glad about it, but everything is better than Sveta or Jelena.

Uhm, talking about Dinara.
If she wins Olympics, US Open and won't face Ana in the final. Then she will be the new nr 1.

If Serena gets Silver now and wins US Open, she will be nr 1 whatever happens.

With a win at US Open and a good showing in Bejing, she should be #1 comfortably :)

6 players can become nr 1 after US Open.
Dementieva needs about the same as Safina, although Elena has a few points more.
Even Sveta can become nr 1, but REALLY weird things should happen then.

She won 3 titles this year, beat Henin and has a final of a grandslam.
There's a nr 1 who can't say the same.
She also won her last 12 matches.

If Serena wins the US Open she'll have a stranglehold over the #1 ranking for the rest of the year....

If she wins the US Open and takes the number one spot I can see her taking a nice long break. I don't think she'll have a really huge lead over JJ and AI so she will have to play a tournament or two in the autumn to definitely keep her spot. She'll want to defend her Moscow points at least. If she does keep it (or get it back) by the YEC and does well in the YEC she'll hang on to number one until at least after the AO I'd say.

Serena doesn't even have to win the title to become # 1. I'd hate for her to be an Amelie, Kim, Sharapova, Davenport, Hingis or Jankovic (slamless) at #1 but it's very possible. If Venus and Sveta go far and take out Ana and Jelena (which anyone can do these days), Serena can be # 1 without the championship.

I don't think Serena would take a really long break. I think she believes, as we all do, that her reign at #1 was way too short, and she'd probably play two or three tournaments before Madrid. Even if she goes to Asia and plays some cheap Tier IIIs.

Nope. Venus has around 2550 pts on the rankings.

And 1450 of that is the USO and Wimbledon. More than half! And add Melbourne, 1700 of 2550 is the 3 GS. She needs to do better at the Tour Level to even think about # 1 (which she isn't). When she was # 1 in 2002, she had solid results in the first half of the year to back up her amazing 2nd half. She was the first African-American to be # 1 and even Serena can't take that away from her. For Venus, it is all about the slams.

Really?

What are Serena's accomplishments in the past 52 weeks?

Won 2 Tier I
Final of 1 GS
Final of 1 Tier I
Won 1 Tier II

It's not like she's head and shoulders above the others.

I wish everyone would stop complaining about the rankings.

They are distorted because Justine Henin is holding so many points for ransom. Think about the USO, Zurich, YEC, Stuttgart. NO ONE has those winner's points. The rankings are going to be distorted and out of order until a FULL YEAR of Henin's retirement goes into effect.

Henin retired on top so that her last week could be # 1. But when she did that, she also was damaging the rankings system. Not her fault, it would happen to anyone who was retiring. But that is how Jankovic got to # 1. Someone has to be #1.

Head and shoulders? No
Better than the current #1? Yes considering Serena has 2x as many Tier I titles, and has been to a GS final. Ana's had a better year in terms of titles, but not by much.

I mean, what do you expect when someone plays up to 8 more events than the rest of the top 5
