Olympic-Tennis-Double fault or ace—it’s a winner for the fans

By Martyn Herman

BEIJING, Aug 12 (Reuters) - You are always a winner in the eyes of Chinese tennis fans at the Olympics, so much so they will even applaud anyone serving a double fault.

But some players unaccustomed to hearing thunderous bursts of clapping and loud “Oohs” and “Aahs” midway through rallies say their concentration has been affected.

Leading Chinese women’s player Zheng Jie (http://sports.yahoo.com/olympics/beijing/chn/jie+zheng/237125/;_ylt=AtdsVsvNMND2eKEhNVpUJC8GqZp4) said on Tuesday home fans were so enthusiastic about the Olympics and that many might not understand the usual etiquette with which tennis was watched.

“Sometimes they may cheer too early, which will interfere with the players,” Zheng said after her 6-7 6-1 6-4 win against Nuria Llagostera (http://sports.yahoo.com/olympics/beijing/esp/nuria+llagostera/214026/;_ylt=AqncDI_KqRfpyD37s9tymNEGqZp4) of Spain (http://sports.yahoo.com/olympics/beijing/esp/;_ylt=AgFaAc1hwTEFZrrIz_I8nukGqZp4).

During the three-hour match the crowd often clapped at wrong moments, including double faults by the Spaniard.

“Some fans may not be familiar with the requirements of the tennis games. I hope that next time maybe they can pay attention to that,” said Zheng, who reached the semi-finals at Wimbledon this year.

But she added: “I would like to thank them for cheering me on in such heat and also such a long match.”

I noticed that they were cheering a bit to early as well. It's probably because they're so excited. Cant really be pissed at a enthusastic crowd.

It seems like the entire tour expects onlookers to keep sticks up their asses too. And then people ask what can be done to attract more viewership  Stop being so uptight, perhaps? Either that or expect a golf crowd.

That's why tennis has such a bad rep as a stuck-up "rich mans" sport. Relax a bit and let the crowd get into it. I know that when Serena's in a heated battle and her opponent double faults I'm as happy as can be, so what's so wrong with me applauding. In almost every other sport it's ok to applaud when the other team makes a mistake.

We applaud when someone misses a free throw (basketball) and when someone in the outfield drops a pop-fly (baseball)- in almost all other sports there aren't silly rules about when to applaud. If the tennis athletes, who get paid ridiculous amounts of money, aren't strong enough to mentally block it out then they deserve to lose. If it was up to me fans could move around and make as much noise as they wanted- the only rule with regards to noise that seems reasonable is no calling the ball out during play. But outside of that rule, scream your head off.

You got a point somewhere but I cannot pin point it  I get amused when fans take offence at a player who does not apologise for a net cord, just how sorry or grateful was Ivanovic against herf irst rd oppponent at wimby (french girl about yeh high. ..I forget her name)
