Feel sort of same way. We'll see how long Dinara's form will last; I hope for a long time. On the other hand Elena follows closely and Svetlana has almost everything she needs to be back with everyone else. Don't kid yourself; it is a strong team!

Sharapova. There's no question. Her talent is undeniable, whether the wins or losses every week.

3 different Russians were in slam finals in the last year.
Right now Dinara has been winning the titles, but I think Elena can make it 4 different Russians in slam finals in 12 months, in NY

It's a question I maybe don't think of in how it's phrased here, but comparing the top Russian girls and who does what the best and what they're capable of at their respective peak has always fascinated me.

Simply put, with results, Sharapova is the clear best. On level of talent (there are so many different ways to define talent, but I'll try not to go overboard there), I would have to say Kuznetsova. That said, Myskina, Zvonareva, and Petrova I would also list extremely high on the "talent" radar, and I may even put Myskina above Kuznetsova, but her serve and volleys are better, so I must give the edge to Sveta.

Purely objective:
1. Sharapova
2. Kuznetsova
3. Myskina
4. Dementieva
5. Safina

Well it's definitely not Dementieva, or Chakvetadze,
Zvonareva has times when she plays well and then times when she just sucks.
Safina and Kuznetsova are tied in my opinion and even if Dinara is in Sharapova's head, she still isn't as consistent against other players.
So, definitely Sharapova.

In singles Sharapova has achieved the most by a long way, but alot of them are more talented than her. The fact that Sharapova is one of the only top Russians that does not play doubles shows that.

But hopefully Dinara can present some kind of decent challenge in the following years and shake things up a bit.

VARIATY is different from TALENT .

The most talented is Maria. Maria has the TALENT of the groundstrokes , the serve, the power. The others can have OTHER TALENTS but they don't have these ones like Maria does in the chapter of serve and groundstrokes.

It's true , players like Kuznetsova and Mauresmo have the variaty in their game and that's definately a talent , but Maria has the best serve , groundstrokes and she has the power too.

Seriously, what a question. I guess three slams and the #1 ranking and multiple other titles don't qualify you being the best player from your nation.

Currently, it's Safina. :) Followed by Elena.

It's an interesting scenario. You Russians are very lucky at the moment :D. Enjoy it while it lasts, because nothing lasts forever.

It kinds of reminds me of the early 1990s when Andre Agassi, Pete Sampras, Jim Courier and Michael Chang were all fighting for the right to be American top dog. The fight to be American top dog also coincided with world domination by them in the early to mid 1990s.

Well that's an interesting list. Great Federation cup squad of course, in the final this year and 3 times champions in the last 4 seasons. However, I can't help get the feeling the Russians are underachieving at the moment. Unlike those young Amrican guys who did win the slams, the Russians are getting to slam finals and losing them recently (with the exception of Maria Sharapova in Australia this year). Elena Dementieva has not fullfilled her potential (due to her serve or lack of it), Nadia Petrova has seemed to got stuck in a rut. Svetlana is struggling big time right now, Myskina went off to have a baby. Vera is not much more than a journeywoman and ocassional top tenner.

It's a hard one. At the moment. clearly Dinara Safina is the best and hottest Russian player right now. But I can't help but go back to the Americans analogy, Safina reminds me of Todd Martin - tall, good technique, good serve, got to a slam final, good doubles player just like Todd, but really not top quality because like Todd, Dinara is not a great mover on the court and lacks certain athleticism. I don't see her as long term top 5 material (although I can't be certain because the top of the womens game is in disarray right now).

I think the best player out of the list overall is Maria Sharapova. She combines desire and a will to win with a good serve and good groundstrokes.

Elena Dementieva potentially could have been the best if she had a serve to go with her incredible groundstrokes, fantastic athleticism and movement. Elena has something Maria lacks - incredible movement.

Svetalana I think is the most naturally talented on the list. Unfortunately she's having a rotten year and has clearly lost all confidence, her second serve in particular has become a liability. I'm still hoping she will at some stage combine natural talent with consistency and a will to win. I've been watching Tennis for a long time and I've seen Sampras, Federer and Mauresmo as three examples of naturally talented players who were heavily criticised for having natural talent but lacking desire and consistency and they came through in the end. Let's hope Svetlana comes through - in the end.

Dementieva with no doubt...

Really, you can't even compare.

She has it everything, what other russians lack. Myskina didn't last- Dementieva still ranked in top 10. Safina currently has the results, but didn't have them before, when Dementieva had them. Kuznetsova isn't consistent, Dementieva is. Chakvetadze barely fights, Dementieva does. And so on...

But Petrova is the most talented, and Sharapova has reached her peak, fullfilled her potential.
