View Full Version : Why isn't Serena playing well?

supergrunt
Aug 11th, 2008, 12:18 AM
1. Doesn't do enough with short balls
2. Can't bend (I really don't think she can  )
3. Limited when on the run
4. Too many shots hit without purpose or conviction

I wouldn't say she isn't playing well.

The only set we've seen her play she was fully in control 5-1, dropped some intensity and now its 5-3 deuce but she'll prob win the set anyway....

I think with Serena it's all about confidence on the big stage. She might look like she's not on her A game for one match and then come out cracking the ball and firing on the next round.

We'll have to see, she's been working hard now she just needs to relax and play up to her potential.

the point she played at *3-1 30-0 says it all about serena now. she hit a big 1st serve the reply was 3/4 length and high and she just stood where she had landed from the serve and hit it. it went wide because she was too close to it and peak serena would have never let a put away ball like that have gotten too close to her. i can see her now back in '01 - '03 taking loads of tiny steps and never letting her feet stop untill she hit the ball. shes flat footed now and has gone from the greatest mover i've ever seen to a clumsy mover.

The issue w/ the match right now is that Olga is the one playing bad. It hasn't been a high quality match. Olga's missing so many easy shots that Serena gets surprised when Olga hits two balls in a row inside the court. It's difficult getting that rhythm when she's been winning games w/ aces & return bombs. Obviously, she's gonna be more on her feet in the Quarterfinals, Semifinals, Finals.

exactly how are you watching her play now???

I think people need to get over shes not like she was in 2002-2003..which was her peak...just as any athlete who leaves their peak..shes not in her peak..just like Roger Federer is not in his so were not going to see the same cleaness in their games as it was when they were at their peak..and plus

like a previous poster said serena almost lost to Els Callens in the second round of wimby 2002, and she almost lost in the first round of AO 2003 to emile loit???????

so to say how bad she's playing is kinda weird because lets not forget this is the first round?????? not quarterfinal...... most tennis pros progressivley get better and better as the tournament goes on

To me she was just flat footed at times and off balance.....but she was playing very goood to me she was making some good winners and some weird errors but nothing major!!!!

IF serena was not flat footed she would be in emaculate form...!!!

i get what your saying but bad example, it was 2 tie breakers, in a match which serena had the wrong shoes on and fell over at lest 6 or 7 times, she was lucky not to injure herself in that match. i remember thinking just change your shoes serena

She has a great 33-5 record this year. Yes, she's averaging 1.5 more games lost a match than in 2002, but as long as she's winning, I don't think it's bad.

Wow. People STILL talk about Serena's form in the first round?

The girl is as fit as she's been in a long time (anyone else see her ripped abs making a re-appearance?), despite coming off an injury, and she's always a little rusty in the first round of ANY tournament. Her form will come together -- hell, she made it to the Wimbledon final not too long ago playing some world-class tennis.

Yes that is it in a nutshell, Serena just cannot move like she used to. Her serve is as good, her return is as good, but she lacks speed and quickness. She has had major injury and lets face it, Serena now is a big gurl. There is a reason big gurls do not play tennis. When she was at her best she weighed about 145 now Serena is in the 165-170 area......real big difference. She gets to balls later, cannot set up as well so cannot hit out effectively. Serena was power and precision.....now the precision part is gone on her groundies.

No, I agree. She's been able to keep a very high level of play these past few years and the hard work she still puts in to be the best is admirable. You can't dominate all the time.

She is basically a one trick pony at this stage in her career. If she has to deal with a rally she will usually lose it, but since she has the mens tour quality serve going it`s near impossible to break her. WTA players are used to being able to give up a break then break back but with Serena that means losing the set.

If you are going to be a one trick pony(which i think you are wrong about) that one trick is the best trick to have ;)

The rally comment is completly untrue and I suggest (though I assume you have a life) that you go and watch some of her matches from Miami, Charleston, or Berlin this year if you truly believe any of the drivle that you wrote. You also neglected the fact that her return is (one of) the best in the women's game and she can hit first serves back for winners.

Wow, I obviously struck a nerve with this poster.... Yea, she has a serve that many of the men would love to have, but even with it she hasn`t won a major since the AO `07. Why? Because without it she is at best a top 30 or so player and that`s being generous. A key reason for this is that her boobs and butt keep getting bigger screwing up the aerodynamics of her movement. And I really doubt there is much she can do about it as she inherited her mother`s genetic blueprint. Get angry if you like but the truth is set before you every time you watch her on TV. In the meantime I`ll be pulling for her or Vee to bring home gold for the U.S.A. :)

What do those 3 have to do with this thread?
If they were playing in this draw, it would be much more interesting to many of us, let's face it, the tour is desperate for some star power, besides Venus and Serena, Ana winning her 1st slam, and Masha's start to the season, overall it has been pretty much crap. Anyway...

Serena will turn it on in later rds, this event means so much to her. She gets a lot of flack on this board but no player can play their best all of the time and 2007 was just last year, LOL. Serena isn't done being a major contender, not by a long shot.

:Serena will turn it on in later rds, this event means so much to her. She gets a lot of flack on this board but no player can play their best all of the time and 2007 was just last year, LOL. Serena isn't done being a major contender, not by a long shot.

So true. "Why so much concern about Serena? How many other players out there?Serena and Venus are the only two playing tennis? What up,with that!!!!!!!Why worry about a big booty tit"s has"been? Something wrong, with this pic:bounce::kiss::wavey:ture!:devil::o
