1st Day Qualification (Saturday)

Entered late and had missed Rodina's match - a player I've seen at IW earlier this year and really like. I knew she had won.

Had also missed Hsieh def Brengle, and Czink def Savchuk, and Dubois def Muller.

Went to the practice courts. Saw Rodina there and got a chance to say something to her coach (female) and good luck to Evgeniya herself. Hope I can see her match tomorrow.

Also saw Lisicki practicing. She really stands out with her tallness, blondeness, buffness, etc.

Saw Lilia Osterloh practicing. (Is she the one married to her coach?)

Stephanie Dubois came in to practice on that court next - don't think her match (vs. Muller) gave her a good workout. :p

Met up with some friends, went to see Glatch vs. Zahlavova Strycova. On the way, I walked past Amelie, sitting on a bench talking on her cell phone. I was so happy/surprised that I waved at her, as if she knew me. :p :o Somebody had asked me to look for Amelie - I can say she was happy and laughing on the phone... having a good time here I guess. Wearing all red.

Alexa Glatch was impressive. My first time seeing her. Physically - very tall and boyish. And she played a smart match against a smaller opponent without relying on her physicality. Z-S sort of imploded there.

Went to the next court to see the second set of Mashona Washington vs. Mathilde Johansson. Johansson was making a lot of errors and Mashona - double-faulting a lot - but getting the points, and she won that set. I was disappointed to see that Mashona lost it in the third. I hope she will play doubles.

(taking a break... little bit more to report)

... have to wrap this up because I have to get to bed.....

1st Day Qualification (Saturday) continued

Went to Yuan vs. O'Brien. Tough match, lots of groundstrokes, well played by both. Yuan had the edge - few breaks here and there, and she was able to finished it in two sets. O'Brien's grunt wasn't too bad. :p Yuan looked just like that recent picture of her that was posted, down to the orange collared adidas top, and cute haircut.

Yuan will face Klepac tomorrow and should be able to win that.

Practice courts
Some players had just finished. Amelie. Most of the fans were watching her. I didn't get to see her practice, but the fans seemed properly impressed.

Kata walked out, seeming quite impressive to me, somehow, she even smiled at me for no reason. Tall, calm, confident. Took some pics and signed some autographs.

Makiri also had just finished, and I have to say she was really gorgeous.

I did see Sabine practicing (again) - she practiced he most today as far as I can tell. She has a coach with her.

This was interesting - a player who I think was Aiko Nakamura (who I really should know because I've seen her play before, so maybe it wasn't her) came up to Sabine to ask her if she was playing doubles with anyone yet. Sabine said no but she had asked someone. She asked the other player what her ranking is (could she have not known her? ). The player said 12 (something, dont remember) - Aiko's ranking is 121. Then Sabine may have said she would play wtih her if the other person she asked couldn't do it. So, that's how some of these doubles pairs get together, folks!! :p If that wasn't Aiko, I'll let you know tomorrow - I'll try to figure it out.

More practicing....

Anne Keothavong - looks more in shape and less skinny than a few years ago when I saw her last.

Amanda Fink, who got in from a feed up, runner up at an ITF tournament. She looks like a college, not pro, player. She was with her coach but alone, no other players probably knew her, and no fans looked at her.

Olivia Sanchez, with coach.

Olga Savchuk, with coach.

Tathiana Garbin, with coach (very cute).

Petra Cetkovska.

[[Forgot to mention I saw Aleks in the morning - she was hitting with Sabine. I did not know she is French Canadian - French accented English, right??]]

Went to last game of De Los Rios defeated by Klepac. Can't really comment much on that one.

I think I'm going back tomorrow for a little bit - but I'm actually playing myself til 10:30 so I'll miss the early stuff again.

:wavey:

I do have pictures - nothing great - but will have to post later... no time!!

Edit to say: Yeah, I'm 99% sure that was Aiko Nakamura looking for doubles partner.

Yeah, I mean I had assumed she was a "regular" Canadian, not a French Canadian, I guess because of her name. But today I heard her speaking in accented English, and was sort of surprised. So how is her name pronounced, then, in French? I always assumed the English pronunciation. (Or am I entirely mixed up? )

If you have any pictures, I can say you if it's Aiko (or not)
But this story is quite cute :)
Hope Aiko will play good matches in Cincinnati

2nd Day Qualification (Sunday)

OK, quick update for today. I'm really tired. Going back tomorrow too.

Got there late but I had things to do early today.

Had missed Rodina def Czink, and Dubois def Johansson already.

Maybe I took a quick peek at the practice courts, saw Aleks practicing return of serve... looked good.

Then headed over to Center Court for Yuan vs. Klepac. Just in time to see the last game of the first set - Klepac won it and took the first set. I was surprised. Yuan had played well yesterday, and Klepac only got into qualies late because of some late withdrawals.

Meng was acting really unhappy, and continued to act that way through the rest of the match. She seemed exceedingly grumpy. I hope somebody tells her to lighten up, enjoy herself, and smile... it makes you feel better. Also the fans cannot accept you if you never acknowlege them or smile.

But... Meng did pick up her game, and Klepac seemed to make a lot of mistakes. I was quite impressed with Klepac. Fast and deep serve.... over 100 mph each first serve. Good game... just too many errors after Meng woke up. That's not to say the match was full of errors; both played well.

End of second set, Meng started to yell out loud when she would win a point... "Hai!!" It was rather shocking. :p

Third set before her serve, Meng had a trainer called, assessed her shoulder, had a medical timeout in which the trainer sort of manipulated the shoulder and arm around for a few minutes. She lost her serve the next game, but won the next two games to win the match.

Both ladies played well and it was an exciting match, and best wishes to Klepac in the future.

Alexa Glatch vs. Su-Wei Hsieh. I saw most of this but really I cannot remember much about this match. Kind of weird... I'm very tired; guess that's the reason. I do have an image of Alexa's serve in which she goes through a very full range of motion - gets that racquet way back then really expands her already tall frame up and out, explosive and exacting at the same time.

Hsieh is pronounced (here, anyway) as "Sway". Don't ask me about the Su-Wei. :p

Alexa is the only player I've seen who keeps her long hair loose while playing. I guess she keeps it back with her hat.

I went to see who was out on the practice courts.

Saw: Anne Keothavong with Julie Ditty. (Edit - that was not Julie Ditty - it was somebody else - I think an AMerican who played only doubles here), Amanda Fink with either Rodina or actually I think it was somebody who looks like Rodina but isn't. I'm pretty sure Alla Kudryavtseva was there practicing.... but she is not in MD (unless somehow she got a late WC or something) so maybe she is playing doubles or just needs a home until next tournament. I think Dubois practicing.

That's about it for today... nothing exciting.... I may get some pics uploaded tonight or maybe later.....

drake3781
Aug 11th, 2008, 02:46 AM
... following up on two threads of information from above.... I just went to check the OOP for tomorrow and I see that Aiko teamed up with Klepac for doubles!! I'll make them my favorite. :p

And Sabine is not in the doubles draw. Wonder what happened.

OMG this is weird... I thought I saw Jasmin Woehr there, but I told myself no that could not be Jasmin. But sure enough, she is in the doubles draw. Jasmin, another player I could not see, and that player's coach spent about one hour sitting down in the front corner of their practice court, in the shade talking.

Her doubles partner is Zahlavova-Strycova.

Some interesting names in the doubles draw... a lot of players who aren't in the singles MD, singles qualifying, or even high ranked alts.

I think I'll see Steph tomorrow. She is playing Rodina, who I like. So I'll probably be supporting Rodina. But interested in seeing Steph for the first time. Somebody I play with saw Steph vs. Makiri in Montreal, and he was very impressed with Steph. And he recognized her at the tournament when we saw her on Saturday after her match.

Who 3 is rather big - is Leferve playing double here? I can't really remember her face from Rosmalen though. It's not Grandin though.
