View Full Version : Tennis at the Olympics should be DOUBLES ONLY, no singles.

Volcana made a good point in his thread that winning a gold medal should be the pinnacle of achievement for each sport in the Olympics. As it is now the Olympics for tennis is simply not that important because it's less prestigious than Grand Slams and not really any different from any other Tour tournament. If the Olympics were a doubles-only event that would really increase the team element of playing for your country and the prestige of the medals in my opinion.

What do you guys think?

It is the "pinnacle" of the sport. Venus and Serena both said that of their trophies, the gold medal is their favorite. Serena's is only doubles, but it's still her favorite.

Wow how did you get to negative reps?! I hope it wasn't just from this thread, because it is quite a valid point. If tennis in Olympics was doubles only, there would be more "team spirit". But then again, there are other Olympic sports where individuals compete for their country (weightlifting, gymnastics and swimming come to mind - I'm sure there's heaps more).

How many grand slam victories would they be willing to trade for one gold medal?

Ask an athlete whether he'd be willing to give up all his world titles in exchange for olympic gold and the answer would most likely be yes.

I think it's a valid point, either make it doubles only, or a junior tournament as with football.

If there only will be doubles tournament, not many people will watch it, wouldn't be a succes and it will be scrapped as an olympic sport

No. If tennis has to be an Olympic sport, then it should be done properly, as it is now.

Personally, I don't think tennis should be at the Olympics. But I don't really mind it either. The players who play and win a medal regard it highly so that's great for them.

I would not say an Olympic medal is worth less than a GS title, but it's definitely not worth more. Let's just say it's different.

The doubles only is a good idea but I think a better one would be play it in a Davis and Fed cup format. I remember Lindsay saying after she won in Atlanta that while she was playing as part of team USA it still had the feel of a normal tournament to some degree. So I think a fed and davis cup formation would be better keep the 6 players and pick four to play everyday.

I disagree. Tennis is both singles and doubles- so both events should be in the Olympics. Singles and Doubles are equally important at every tournament, whether it's a Grand Slam, Olympics or Tier IV.

If Roger Federer, Elena Dementieva, Venus and Serena, etc. etc. regard the Olympics as highly, if not even more highly than grand slams, I'm not sure what else you want. It is the pinnacle of the sport for them.

I don't care much for what the traditionalists say. They're points are moot, in my opinion, because the player's opinion should count for most.

I mostly agree, but I think doubles at the Olympics is more important than at the other tournaments including the Slams. Roger doesn^t play doubles at the Slams, but I think he and the other top players are playing both singles and doubles at the Olympics. There is NO logical reason to exclude singles at the Olympics!

There are tons of Olympics events that are played individually only.

In that case, we should just have a basketball shoot out instead of a proper tournament too. :silly:

They're the same so doubles at the Olympics means the same as singles does. Roger is not a top player (in doubles) so it doesn't mean anything more that he plays doubles in Beijing. It is true, however, that doubles does get the most media coverage at the Olympics more than anywhere else.

I agree with Volcana. I don't know why the olympics are less prestegious than winning the olympics; I would rather win the olympics than a grand slam. I definitly think it should be changed to a team format, maybe like Hopman Cup.

I get the sentiment of the thread starter although I think the idea of doubles only is a bad one. Instead how about if tennis in the Olympics was more similar to how Hopman Cup is played? I think the idea of making it a team medal would make it seem more country oriented and less individually focused. It would help to make tennis in the Olympics special.

How about something like:
Each country has a team consisting of:
- 1 male singles player
- 1 female singles player
- 1 mens' doubles
- 1 women's doubles
- 1 mixed doubles

The team to win 3 out of 5 moves on. And for the nations with lots of players they could have a maximum of three separate teams competing.

Just an idea....

I will not insult the originator of this thread, but before you make topic like this think of yourself as a competitor, think of sportsmanship, honor and stripping tennis players from that. Perhaps you don't understand Olympics and its idea.

Agree with the team event idea. Don't play Davis and Fed Cups on Olympic years and play the Olympics as a mixed-gender team event. You could play it the Hopman Cup way (women's singles+men's singles+mixed doubles) or Team Tennis (one set of men's & women's singles each, one set of men's, women's and mixed doubles each). I think the Hopman Cup way would be better.

The change would make the Olympics genuinely special, instead of just like another Masters tournament.
