Olympics: Williams sisters shrug off spying fears
AFP - August 8, 2008, 6:58 pm

Venus and Serena Williams on Friday brushed off fears that spies could be monitoring their Olympic training sessions.

The sisters, among the favourites in both singles and doubles, said they had seen nothing untoward while practising here.

"We don't know. We just follow that yellow ball, we don't look around," said Serena in response to question.

"We're out there, we've been practising the last two days together. The only thing I see is the ball or whoever I'm practising with at the time," she added.

"I don't know who's watching or who's not watching."

Spying allegations have rocked previous events in China with Denmark accusing the hosts of filming a team meeting and training session during last year's Women's football World Cup.

The Williams are in search of their second doubles gold after 2000, when Venus also took the singles title.

They are seeded fifth in the doubles competition, which was won by China's Li Ting and Sun Tiantian four years ago.

Serena has amassed eight Grand Slam titles but lost last month's Wimbledon final to her sister. She said she was highly motivated for the Games and rated them more important than the US Open, which starts on August 25.

"I love playing for my country first of all. This is the Olympics and out of all the trophies I have the gold medal is really the favourite," she said.

"This is a life-changing and life-altering experience to be around so many fabulous athletes that are able to take their games and various sports to the ultimate level.
"It doesn't get better than this so it was a no-brainer it is close to the US Open, but this is for me the biggest thing."

Both sisters said they were carrying knee injuries but gave no indication they would pull out. Former Olympic champion Lindsay Davenport announced her sudden withdrawal with a knee problem on Friday.

"I'm doing much better now. I'm blocking that out -- mind over matter," Venus said.

Does it really matter if someone is spying? It's not like their game is a secret, they just go out on court and kick ass. Plain and simple.

Not sure how much the Chinese "spying" would help since a part of the Sisters game rely on their size and the power they can generate, which is something the Chinese girls lack.

Anyone ever wonder why both Venus and Serena go great lengths to cover their mouths when they are talking (strategizing) during points in doubles? I do find this practice to be unnecessary and frankly hillarious. Even if the opposing player planted lip readers in the stadium, when would they have time to relay the intercepted information back to the opponents who need it? Besides, with the plethora of matches (singles and doubles) available on tape/dvd, I can hardly see the point of spying.

Well they can spy on 127mph serves or 100+mph cross court

bulletlike returns. Although I don't see how it would help

their players do anything about them.

They could spy on the " Long arm of Law " (Venus )

and her net coverage and Serena's potent second

serve. But, well, there's not much they can do about

that either.

They could spy on the Sisters dbls strategies to try

and beat them both at the same time, well, barring

injury theres not a lot they can....

Habit I guess. Venus does it with whomever she's partnered with. During WTT she was doing with Knowles I believe it was. I've seen her do it with Caro , Lisa and Corina as well

everyone knows how the WS play. it's no secret.
if anything the WS should be "spying" on their 1st round opponents practices cuz I doubt either has ever seen them play.

It's called scouting, not spying, and it happens in tennis all the time. I don't see what the big deal is, really.

The Chinese are spying on--I mean, monitoring the athletes to make sure they aren't doing or saying anything derogatory towards the Chinese government. It's a political thing.

Then, what are they going to do? Force them to withdraw from the Olympics and ban them from ever coming to China again?

well, Venus and Serena stated in the early part of their career a lot fo times they crack jokes to each other (assume about their opponents, (a lot of doubles teams who are having a good time do this, I know i did/ do)) I assume they do it to not have the media spin something when they read lips....

Of course Serena has no problem with them reading her mouth the word Bitch... so who knows...;)
