She's had chances to get to no. 1. Time is running out, though, unless she can do well enough to defend her points from last year's US Open - i.e. she needs to get to the final again. And it sure helps when Ana and Jelena miss out on their opportunities.

If she loses first round in USO, she's #9 or #10, possibly worse, depending on what Aga, Vera, and Anna do.

Yikes.

I am worried only the Championship race rankings. If she's out of top 10. She'll still be the seed in Tier 1 events. No major event left in this season.

Well Sveta is capable of a good run in NY, she has shown it twice before with two finals appearances winning once. Hopefully she can stay in the Top 10 by the end of the year and qualify for the YEC, a solid run in NY may do that. I believe she will rebound back in NY or at least during the Indoor season.

Oh & just something interesting...Sveta can be No.1 after the USO (though her chances aren't easy) if she wins the title, Ana loses in the 1st round, Jelena doesn't reach the Qtrs, Serena doesn't reach the semis, & that Lena D & Dinara don't reach the final.

WTA : 9 (4308 points)

I was thinking about the rankings the other day and realised that Sveta has a huge shot at the number one ranking from now till Miami. and looking at TBE projected rankings, next week her points from Beijing (final) will be taken off, which will leave Vera very close to her.Sveta really needs to show some results in her next 2 tourneys to change that as Vera is playing a tournament more than Sveta this fall (Moscow) or I'll have no other option than cheering against Vera :o

Blimey, Venus, Zvonareva & JJ have tons to defend  I remember JJ having a good end to the year last year but I don't remember Venus & Zvonareva doing that well to get all those points, I probably just wasn't paying much attention at the end of last year

I just want Sveta to have a good end to the year whatever that entails, I felt she was beginning to get some form back during the USO (even with the absurdly annoying loss to Wozniacki) but I felt she was beginning to play her best tennis since RG so hopefully that'll continue & improve further, especially after having some rest &, I assume, some time at home to relax etc.

Indeed, she doesn't have many pts to defend at YEC or anything so a good amount of pts could be gained. Hopefully she can build on her performances this week & ahve a good run at a YEC finally, I have a good feeling about this year, she may not win it or anything (I'm always hopeful though!) but I think she's due a good performance at the YEC, win a few matches, beat the other top players etc.

Also about YEC and ranking, does anyone know how they divide the players in groups? I assume numbers 1 and 2 are in different groups, and so are 3 and 4.So as Sveta will be 3rd the week of YEC,we already know she'll be in different group than Venus, who'll be 4th.Am I right?

I've heard she may get suspended for the AO next year or maybe the USO next eyar (since the incident was at the USO, some think the punishment should be) but I've not heard anything official & to be honest I doubt she'll actually get suspended for a slam/s. I just can't see them suspending one of the top draws in women's tennis & potentially/probably the #1 ranked player at the time of any suspension she did get. I do think a suspension from the slams is the biggest/most effective punishment you could give her since a fine won't affect her much, suspending her from the normal WTA events won't bother her too much (actually she'd probably jump for joy at that punishment ;) ), I suppose a points deduction might bother her but I doubt it. I reckon she won't get suspended but perhaps she won't be allowed to be seeded despite her ranking so she would enter slams as if she was like ranked 80 or something. Just have to wait & see what is decided

Anyway...davai Sveta! :bounce:

Sorry if this is isn't the right thread for this, but why isn't Sveta playing in Moscow? Or is she? I can't find her in the schedule.

Sveta is flying to Doha tomorrow to prepare for YEC,I guess that's why.It would have been a crazy schedule to compete the week before in complete different conditions (indoor, cold weather) than the ones she'll find in Doha. It's a shame Kremlin Cup date was changed this year :(

The possible sanction to Serena has me asking :was Pennetta ever punished for what she did and say at that fed cup match against France?

Света_мой_№1

yeah I dont really get the punishment if they do it with serena they should do it with everybody at wta and maybe atp although they dont have the same organisation so then I would get it.

I think the Serena one is being taken more seriously than other player's incidents because it got so much attention & because it seemed more threatening than just swearing/being rude to an official. I mean tons of players have sworn at officials, the crowd etc & they get fined & everyone moves on (Federer got a fine for his swearing during the USO final for instance) but I think with Serena's incident they are taking it as more than just a player swearing etc so they're looking at maybe more of a punishment than just the usual fine. But like I said before I doubt they'll actually suspend her or anything. I could see some new rules or something coming out of this though about treatments/attitudes towards officials & the punishments for any infractions.

Света_мой_№1

yeah I must say serena was going to far with this and for me the first time I have seen a player like this. I think they should at least make new rules. and I wont me against a punishment against serena cuz it was just to bad that woman was really afraid of her.

I found this on GM,it's about the count of weeks into top 20:

Milestones:
300+ weeks - Kuznetsova
200+ weeks - Jankovic

Concretely Sveta has been ranked inside the top 20, 306 weeks. Not bad :D

I'm not holding my breath that she finishes as 1 ( she's way too irregular for that, but that's how she is and we love her anyway + next year there will be even more competition for that spot with the 2 belgians) but it would be nice if she could reach it at some point in her career. It would only be fair when you see less talented players than her as Jankovic have already reached it.

Wozniacki could end up #1 if she wins Aus title & something like Serena gets beaten like next round or something. Not trying to be mean to Wozniacki because she seems like a nice girl & all but I really dislike watching her play & don't think she's what I'd consider to be #1 material (unless she totally changes her game style).

Eh, I suppose you can't argue with the ranking, if she's got the points, she's got the points but I don't like the idea of her being a #1...at least not if she continues to play as I've seen her play so far. Ah well.

Think the clay season is going to be vital for her ranking since she has a lot to defend over most of the clay events, final points & winners points galore there. Hopefully she has a great clay season even with the return of 2 players (Henin & Clijsters) that are both very good clay court players.

Света_мой_№1
Jan 27th, 2010, 09:39 PM
yeah but she could be no.1 if I am right before that cuz she lost early rounds there so nothing to defend. if after that she cant keep it no.1 cuz of her clay season she at least has been it no.1 for a couple of weeks or 1 week

Bероника
Jan 27th, 2010, 09:56 PM
thinking of all that she has to defend on clay makes me scared, but thinking about the possibility of her being n.1 even more.I know it does not make a lot of sense.Everytime she has chances to get there, loses early, she can't deal with that pressure. It happened 3 times in 2008,has happened in Australia this year again.Everytime I read she has possibilities of getting there,it's almost assured she'll have an early or very bad exit from the tournament in question

She has pressure coming up. She has a major to defend.
1 or 2 doesnt matter, it depends where Justine and Kim are in the draw
But to be 1 seed at a Super Tier I and holding a major would be good

Bероника
Feb 23rd, 2010, 10:53 PM
yeah, hopefully Kim and specially Justine are far away from her in the draw.

I was just looking and at IW she does have only 2nd round points to defend,so these points are defended already since she'll have a bye.Of course I would love her to win some matchs (notice the plural) not for her ranking but because I can't remember last time she won more than 3 matchs in a same tournament :help:

about defending a major,I already know it will be very difficult, and I wouldn't be surprised it's too much pressure and crashes out early. But this is still far.

Sveta has a very big match coming up a week from Monday.
I hope she gets to practice on that court, because Venus played last year.
Venus won Dubai, flew to Mexico. She might be tired or jet lagged.
I think Sveta should take this match seriously. You dont get a chance for a $ million every day. Even for a multiple slam winner
Leaving with $250,000 is not a bad night's work. But go for the million

I agree that she should play more and smaller events but her clay schedule is already intense, she plays 3 big events back to back and it would not be prudent to add more now because she must take care of this injury first. The injury thing freaks me out,we know loads of cases of players whose career have never been the same after an injury,I hope Sveta is able to overcome that.So far we have been lucky because she's had not many injuries during her career and it could be worse but still :scared:

ok,here's the updated ranking so we can all :sobbing: watching it:

19 6 Kuznetsova, Svetlana 27/06/85 RUS 2821 19

:sobbing:

Strange days... In Top 10 there is only one Russian and 2 Italian players.
Sveta is "only" 629 points away from 10th place.
She's also 38 in Race to the Sony Ericsson Championships with 781 points.
And for the end a good news! She's up in Doubles ranking from 91 to 89 position. :cheer:

It's possible thanks to that someone who was before Sveta in the doubles ranking wasn't able to defence her points in Paris from last year (for instance lost in the 1st round this year and was like in QF last year). Sveta did not play so has clear position (0 points) and goes up.
This ranking is quite easy as far as you now how many points is for each round in different tournaments.
The race ranking is a tricky one. It's totally different and still not sure how it goes.

After Wimbledon Sveta will be at 20 position. If Kvitova would win (??? :help:) Sveta could be out of Top 20 at 21 position. Pironkova as a winner is not a threat (as I'm correct) and Sveta will stay as 20.

Bероника
Aug 14th, 2010, 03:06 PM
she doesn't have much to defend in Canada, right? I remember last year was a little disaster there

she was really screwed with the draw in Cinci :( It made me really angry to see the girls that she beat last week in San Diego were still in the draw yesterday because they were luckier...on the other hand Masha must be playing real good tennis and an injured Sveta has been the only player to take a set from her this week. This says a lot.

Svetlana)))
Aug 14th, 2010, 03:25 PM
I think she is defending a r3, she had a bye last year and beat one opponent. The draw isn't that simple for her though. R1 is Pavs who i hope plays well to test Sveta but not well enough to beat her. R2 is reasonable but r3 is radwanska again.

hmm,bad memory,I had the impression she crashed really early last year from Canada.Oh well...it's not ranking and points that matter that much now,but keep finding the good sensations in her game she had in San Diego. This summer has already been more successful for her with her title than the two previous years where she was not immpressive.

Yup totally agree with you. Sveta doesn't really do well in USO series events but the top16 seed could be very important to her. It could be the difference between a Sharapova/Henin (is she playing?) or a Dulgheru R3

Great a top 16 seed is secured. However, a win in the QF will have her seeded 12 which is much better. Seeds 9-12 play seeds 5-8 in r4. Seeds 5-8 are all slumping now and it'll be great for Sveta. If she's seeded 13, she would have to face one of the top 4 seeds in r4 which isn't too bad either but there's Kim :help:

I know,I'm thinking the same and I prefer her to do well at USO than in Canada,so I'm ok if she loses SF and goes a bit unnoticed for the open. It'll be difficult though as I just read Serena will not play and journalists are going to start discussing who the favourites are now, hopefully the presssure will be on Kim,Maria or someone else, just not Sveta,we know how bad she deals with it.

Great minds think alike, I guess. No spotlight on Sveta! She may have other ideas, though. it's got to be a great feeling to be winning again. I would love to see her play Vera, but then they both hate the spotlight & I agree it would almost be better if they lose & the press ignores them as they usually do. ;)

No, I do not agree. She needs some more wins. She was great yesterday but then I saw Kim vs Zvonarieva and they were much better. Sveta is still far (but not as far as in the first part of the year ;)) from her optional form so she needs to play more. Also check what she said after the match: "Winning makes you a diferent player" (or something like that). If she'll pass Caro it will be a huge boost for her confidence. As for the mental part I guess Loic is doing a great job and he'll know how to positivily influence her.

She should be in top 8 in the race. All she has to do is to win USO ;)

just had a look at the rankings and I shouldn't have because I feel like quitting following tennis completely

without the points of that stupid DOha championships that she obviously can't defend this year,Sveta is down to 26 :help:

next year will be important I think for sveta she can come back really hard cuz she is just good at tennis. but she also can mess it up cuz right now her head is somewhere else.(I think at least I get that feeling)

This is her worst-year end ranking since 2003. I agree with Mel, if she has a horrid 2011, it is highly possible that Sveta might contemplate retirement after 2012 olympics.

Sveta fans   yeah I can't believe she is at No.26. Well all I can say is the years she has won a GS title (2004, 2009), the next year she did shit (2005, 2010), & then the year after she does better (2006, 2011?). So hopefully its much better next year judging by those patterns :)

I get that feeling too  I'm not optimistic at all at the moment. She doesn't look ok,her results this year have probably been a reflection of that, and everytime you hear her talk you get the impression that it's harder for her to traver so much and be away. This is not the right set of mind for a professional player I'm afraid.

If her results next year are so bad again,I can't see her keep on playing to be just an average player that everyone takes advantage of like this season. She knows she is much better than that and I don't think she would accept it easily.

^ Whatever the reason is I guess she's in much worse mental state than after winning uso.
What hit me the most (specially in the second part of the current season) was that while she was playing there was no passion in her game. It all looked like she was there coz she had to, not that she wanted.
I do not think she will retire soon coz what else she could do? Spending money and hanging around? I don't think so. For me she unfortunatelly looks like a person in deppression.
