View Full Version : Quotes by other players about Sveta

Aug 1st, 2008, 05:13 PM
I thought it's a good idea to start a thread about what other players have to say about Sveta and her game.Several players, including Federer and Justine Hénin have said really nice things about her game is the past.So if you find any interesting quote please post it here.

I start with what her opponent yesterday,Michelle Larcher de Brito, said after the match:

Q. How good is she?
MICHELLE LARCHER DE BRITO: Well,Grand Slam champion. Can't be that bad. But, no,she's really a great player. Was a really tough match. She had me running side to side.It was a fun match actually. I enjoyed myself. It was a good fight. She's, of course, a
very good player.

Q. Anything special that impressed you about her game?
MICHELLE LARCHER DE BRITO: I mean, she's a great mover. She has a great
serve. She's just good. I mean, all her shots are pretty good.

yeah this is interesting to know I think

Nadia Petrova,in an interview last week

“She hasn’t had great results recently, nothing outstanding,” Petrova said. “For her it’s a matter of will, but she can be dangerous if she has her mind on something.”

Aug 19th, 2008, 11:17 AM
Nadia said like Sveta lost concentration on tennis, I mean on and off the court.

A quote from Lena Dementieva, about the final she lost in NY to Sveta in 2004:

"I was not that tired [during the loss to Kuznetsova]," Dementieva said Sunday night. "The way Svetlana was playing that year, she was better than anyone."

Jan 1st, 2009, 06:32 PM
"Some Russians are specific. Sharapova is inaccessible. She's always keeping herself out of the way. She's friends with noone. Chakvetadze is very similar. Kuznetsova, on the other hand, is great! She's funny and always the life and soul of the party. Dementieva is also very likeable. She's like a normal girl from the neighbourhood"

- Agnieszka Radwańska sharing her opinions on the dominant Russians on the WTA Tour.

Jan 1st, 2009, 07:40 PM
That's one reason I became a fan; everyone has something kind to say about Sveta and she is one of the best liked players on tour :).

Jan 2nd, 2009, 09:03 PM
Aww, thats nice of Agnieszka Radwańska to say that about Sveta... So true too :D

Jie Zheng,on her next match vs Sveta:

"Kuznetsova is very strong. I have never beaten her before. I just want to try my best, step by step."

Jan 26th, 2009, 03:15 PM
Serena when asked about QF match vs Sveta:

Q. Svetlana Kuznetsova in the next round. Thoughts on that matchup?
SERENA WILLIAMS: Yeah, uhm, I haven't played her that much in my career, but we've played a couple times. She's a good player, obviously. Gets a ton of balls back. She's extremely strong. I think we have a similar game. I think it will obviously be a great match.

Q. Do you feel like she's someone that can go toe‑to‑toe with you at times?
SERENA WILLIAMS: Yeah, because she's extremely powerful. You know, she just can get a lot of things back, kind of like me. Like I said, I think we have a very similar game.
It will be just who can do whatever.

Mar 14th, 2009, 05:43 PM
Ula Radwanska:

"This was one of the biggest wins of my career," Radwanska said after the match, which finished well past midnight. "I'm so glad to get through it but I'm worried about my ankle, which I twisted in the last game. Svetlana was very tough."

Quote by Agnes Szavay after Connecticut tournie:

"It was a really, really good week and I played really well; but that's why it's even more disappointing, especially after I won the first set. But Svetlana is a very nice girl - she always makes me smile. She told me she was sorry about it, that she was not happy she won in this way. She's really nice."

Same, same Agnes!:p

"She was a funny girl. I remember her coming to the match with a two liter Pepsi. You would look at her and think, 'No way she can win a Grand Slam one day.' But then she moved to Spain and she changed completely. She became much more professional, and she did a huge job. She improved really a lot."
Dinara Safina on her first impression of friend and countrywoman Svetlana Kuznetsova (http://www.sonyericssonwtatour.com/page/Player/Info/0,,12781~4467,00.html?) when the two used to play before they were even teenagers.

Jun 11th, 2009, 04:23 PM
2 liters of pepsi I would be sick if I would be drinking that during sports

Jun 11th, 2009, 04:27 PM
yeah, that's really not good. She could have problems later.I think she drinks more healthy nowadays ;)

does ATP count?

Federer said...

When she saw it written in plain English, she had to pinch herself -- Roger Federer had picked out the Russian as his favourite player on the women's tour.

"I like her game, she plays well," Federer declared earlier in the week.

It sent Kuznetsova into a spin. "The Russian press told me and I thought 'No, it was a joke'. So I wanted to check it myself and read this on the Internet," the third seed said after reaching the quarter-finals at Roland Garros.

"If I would have to choose a compliment from anybody, it's definitely the best I ever heard. Roger is a legend and to hear him say that is almost a dream.

"It's unbelievable to hear my hero say this about my tennis."

A runner-up in Paris 12 months ago, Kuznetsova is now eager to back up Federer's endorsement by winning the title on Saturday.

"If he likes my game, I would like to prove it more," she said.

Roger again this year:)

Q. Svetlana Kuznetsova, who won this tournament yesterday cheers for you. Do you know about it? And what do you think about Russian women andmen's tennis?

ROGER FEDERER: Well, I was very happy for Svetlana that shewas able to win. Russian tennis has beenincredibly strong over the last few years. I always said I liked her game, so I was very happy for her, to see hersucceed here.

Yeah, they have phenomenal playerson both sides. I'm sure we'll see moreof that in the future.

Dinara Safina (http://tennisinfoblog.com/category/dinara-safina) about Svetlana Kuznetsova (http://tennisinfoblog.com/category/svetlana-kuznetsova) (via RIA Novosti)

“Svetlana is a very open and honest person. She will never do anything behind your back. I think it is a very valuable quality. Whether she is right or wrong, it is another issue, but she will say whatever is on her mind. But there are people who smile at you and then stab your back. I know that Sveta will never do that.”

this is what Nadia wrote on twitter, answering some question:

I am friendly with all the russian players but I especially enjoy spending time with kuzi.

Jul 28th, 2009, 06:11 PM
yeah they always look like they have fun together.

Kim Clijsters about Sveta:

Had a good hit today with Kuzzie - she's a fun girl, it was a great thrill for me to hit with a Top 5 player again

Aug 11th, 2009, 10:17 PM
Kim Clijsters about Sveta:

Kim getting all star struck around Sveta ;):p

Aug 31st, 2009, 10:44 PM
From an interview of Kim Clijsters asked about how today's top players play all similar game:

Maybe that’s something, the culture, as well, I think. A lot of Russian girls play similar. Dinara and Svetlana are different because they do mix it up a little bit, especially Kuznetsova, she’s really good at doing that. She’s kind of from the older generation, I’d say.

Oct 13th, 2009, 07:34 PM
Radwanska after Beijing final:

"Svetlana is a great player, she was just too good tonight. She had nothing to lose, she's already in Doha so she was very comfortable tonight"

Oct 13th, 2009, 08:11 PM
hhhmmm she had nothing to lose. but she was playing with something different spinning in her head and thinking back radwanska could have done something with that but she just couldnt

Oct 28th, 2009, 04:46 PM
The part of Serena's interview yesterday where she talks about Sveta:

SERENA WILLIAMS: No, I think Svetlana and I were really going at it. You can tell how much we care about our sport and how passionate we are.
We didn't care who was there, whether it was one person or two. We were really involved. We really both wanted to win. Neither one of us let up at all.

Dec 21st, 2009, 10:34 PM
This is from an interview with Sania Mirza:

MS: You have played countless matches in your career that spans six years. Which of your opponents would you say is the toughest one you've ever faced?
SM: I cannot single out one tough opponent as most of them have already proven themselves to be great. But if I were to identify just one, I would say it's the Russian current world No 3 Svetlana Kuznetsova.

Feb 4th, 2010, 05:42 PM
This is a russian quote,Alisa was asked how she felt about Sveta's presence in the team:

Радость. Света - безусловно, высококлассный игрок, очень опытный спортсмен, прекрасный человек и друг. Она здесь придает искорку в нашу команду, создает великолепную атмосферу. Света любит играть за команду. Против сербок - это то, что нужно. В каком бы составе они ни играли, чем больше у нас сильных игроков, тем лучше.

It's a good quote so I try to translate it:

Alisa says she felt happiness.Sveta is without doubt a high-class player,a very experienced athlete,a wonderful person and friend. She creates great atmosphere in our team.Sveta loves to play for the team.Against Serbia, this is what we need.In any team,it's better when the more strong players there are,the better.

Feb 18th, 2010, 06:12 PM
This is from Alisa's blog after she lost to Sveta at Sydney this year:

It was a good match, with ups and downs for both of us. I always enjoy to play against Svetlana, she is a great athlete and a very nice person off the court.

Feb 26th, 2010, 08:51 AM
More from Alisa's blog, about Fed Cup:

I'm very happy that Svetlana Kuznetsova could make it to come there, she was the one to bring more confidence to our team.

I was excited to play the deciding doubles. Sveta is a very experienced player and she helped me a lot. It was the first time that we played together, but we made a great team. We had such a friendly and supportive team this time and I think this was the main key for our victory. I have so many great memories from Belgrade :)

Feb 26th, 2010, 03:32 PM
great to hear from someone else she is a warm and friendly person again cuz we already know

Feb 27th, 2010, 03:43 PM
yeah,Alisa seems to be fond of Sveta for all that I've read.I hope Fed Cup is not the last time they play together in doubles. They could be an interesting team and both girls are favourites of mine.

Mar 27th, 2010, 03:06 PM
Sam Stosur:

Who are you good friends with on the Tour? Martha
All the Australians. All of us get along really well and want to see each other do well. It's nice to hang out with people from your own country when on the road too, just to talk about home or have a laugh, we all have a pretty similar sense of humour so that makes for fun times. A couple of other players who are good to have a laugh with are Francesca Schiavone and Svetlana Kuznetsova.

Mar 30th, 2010, 12:24 AM

"It was a long, long time ago," the Frenchwoman, who won that title in New York, lamented. "We used to practice together all the time too. But she beat me here at the Orange Bowl. It was my first time playing the semifinals of the Orange Bowl and she beat me. She's such a great girl and so nice."

May 12th, 2010, 10:35 AM
Anastasia Pivovarova,young russian player:

About the players that she likes: "In tennis for me, Sveta Kuznetsova is a player I like because how she faces each game in the match, she is very consistency on clay and other surfaces. I would also like Anastasia Myskina and Justine Henin”.

Aug 3rd, 2010, 09:13 PM
Vera wrote this on facebook:

Had All-Access Hour yesterday and then Sveta and I won our doubles match last night. First match after Wimbledon and it felt good. Sveta is always a lot of fun to play with too.

Anastasia Pivovarova,young russian player:

She had the right word, but not the form :). Still, I understand her totally and what a nice thing to say :hearts:

Aug 9th, 2010, 10:05 PM
Radwanska about Sveta after yesterday final:

“She’s a great player, a top player,” Radwanska said. “Now, she’s lost some points and she’s behind me (in the rankings). But in the important moments, she was better.

“She was playing very powerful shots and she was pushing me around.” Radwanska said. “It was hard to play. She’s a very good baseline player. It’s hard to have good rallies with her.”

Aga is very graceful in defeat :worship: Also she had some physical problems and never used it as an excuse to defeat as other players do.

Dec 3rd, 2010, 08:58 PM
not a direct quote, but Dinara names Sveta and Lena Vesnina as her best friends on tour in this article ;)

Safina says her best friends on the WTA tour are compatriots Elena Vesnina and Svetlana Kuznetsova. Both are competing in Auckland.

Dec 19th, 2010, 05:24 PM
finally got the chance to read serena's book I got from london and this is what she wrote about sveta:

its a diary part she kept form us open 2008

another seed fell! svetlana kuznetsova. I'm sad, because I like her. She's one of the players I get along with on the tour. So sweet, so funny. and such a strong player. she always plays me tough. Svetlana was actually seeded #3 in this tournament, but ranked #4, while I was ranked #3 and seeded #4. weird, how that sometimes happens. I can never figure it out! she's been ahead of me for so long, but this girl from slovenia really suprised her, so that's always a real wake-up call to the rest of the field.

Dec 20th, 2010, 08:30 PM
thanks Mel,I always wanted to know what she said but at the time the Serena fans on GM weren't very cooperative.

I remember the girl from Slovenia (she means Srebotnik)also surprised Serena at RG a few years ago so definitely know what she's talking about. Why were they ranked a spot down? I can't really remember that.

Dec 21st, 2010, 06:32 PM
well I think that was because the ranking changed while the list for RG was already done.
so serena was no.4 when the list was made but by the time she played there came before sveta in the rankings.

Dec 21st, 2010, 06:33 PM
and I must say the book is pretty good. I dont agree with everything but the book is easy to read.
was very moved about the story about her sister that died

Jan 23rd, 2011, 08:55 PM
Fran after the longest womens' Grand Slam match in history during AO 2011:

You know, one has to win; the other has to lose for sure. But I think we played very high level all the match. Maybe a little bit me in the second set I went a little bit down with too many mistake.
But in the third set we give everything. So when we finish, I say Svetlana a really good job and you are great, fantastic. She say the same. We respect a lot each other.

Feb 7th, 2011, 08:30 PM

"I would like to say a big thank you to Svetlana, as she really helped me in this doubles match.

Nastia is so cute

This is part of a chat interview of Sam Stosur today:

My favorite Russian player on tour is Kuzzy!

I'm liking Sam more now but she should be more informed about her favourite russian and know she doesn't like to be called Kuzzy ;)

Mar 22nd, 2011, 11:23 AM
I really love this thread :inlove: I wonder how Sveta will react to being called Kuzzy

Mar 22nd, 2011, 10:43 PM
Well since Sam is saying a positive thing about her (I mean, there are so many russian out there to chose from, being someone's favourite russian has its merit ;) ),she would probably be pleased

Gael monfils: To take to see your favourite band?
Hmmm…I really wouldn't mind going to see some rap with Svetlana (Kutznetsova). She's a great chick, she's fantastic. I love her.

From ESPN:

Navratilova on Kuznetsova: "She likes being a big cheese in Russia, I think. She moved from Barcelona to Moscow because she's a big fish there. She likes the recognition that she gets, and I think she got a little lazy, in a way, living the good life."

 Of course perhaps I have a bias, as Sveta's my favorite player, but I really wasn't a fan of Martina's back in her playing days, and I don't like her character any more now than then. Sveta works very hard-I wish I had her work ethic- and I'm sure is grateful for everything she has. She's so down to earth, and doesn't seem like one to throw her wealth around. She's earned her toys.

I've heard that Sveta loves her fans and is always kind when recognized, but never acts entitled to anything, or like the "big cheese". Off the court, she's a normal person going about her life. None of this "Don't you know who I am??"

I find it ironic that Martina lives in Aspen, which is the poshest of posh places in this country. And she isn't a shrinking person, either.

After Sveta retires and, I hope, goes into commentating, I can't imagine her speaking poorly of any player and calling them "lazy". She finds something nice to say about everyone.

May 29th, 2011, 10:11 AM
Sveta is not lazy, she is maybe more relaxed than other girls, maybe she meant that? This is the first time I read a negative quote from Martina about Sveta and I'm a bit shocked

Jun 10th, 2011, 07:38 PM
This is from Beth Mattek-Sands blog:

But speaking of punches, Kuzy (Svetlana Kuznetsova) and I have been trading sucker punches when the other isn't ready. It's escalated a little bit because she throws a serious blow, but it's OK because I retaliated with a rib hit. We've agreed that match day should be off limits but when we shook hands for a truce she punched me twice and ran up the stairs. … I see how it is now!

Jun 11th, 2011, 04:32 AM

Carla about today's match:

“Her forehand and backhand was excellent,” said the Spaniard. “I thought I served well, but it was difficult for me to try and do anything. I had a chance in the first set when I was 4-3 up, but I couldn’t press home that advantage and Svetlana was just playing very good tennis today.”

Feb 5th, 2012, 11:08 AM
Arantxa Sanchez Vicario: I told Kuznetsova we could be on the same side, she replied: «I am Russian»

Spain team captain at the Fed Cup Arantxa Sanchez Vicario in an interview to the Russian newspaper Sport-Express spoke about her relationship with Russian tennis player Svetlana Kuztsova.
«She arrived to Barcelona at the age of 14 and when I saw her, I immediately realised she was special. She was physically strong, so I thought to myself: if she gets a bit more powerful and confident, she can achieve great things. Afterwards we travelled together and became good friends – she was like a little sister to me,» said the four time singles Grand Slam champion.
«Now we represent two opposing sides, but we just laugh it off and shake hands with each other after the game. I once asked her if she could join my team. «I am Russian,» she replied.»
«It is true that she dropped in the rankings, but she can bounce back, all she needs is some stability, and that is all to do with the mental attitude,» said the Spaniard.

Feb 20th, 2012, 09:13 PM
Julia about today's match:

"It wasn't the best beginning for me, but one of hers probably. She overwhelmed me with her shots," Goerges said. "I just tried to get back into it, playing more balls in the court and fighting for every ball. I got my chance and took it."

Juan Monaco would pick Sveta to play mixed doubles ( read in this RG interview):

To play mixed doubles with?
Svetlana Kuznetsova. She’s a good friend.http://www.rolandgarros.com/en_FR/news/articles/2012-06-03/201206031338729481580.html

Serena :

"She's such a great player," Williams said. "She's taken a little time off due to injury, but she's been consistent, at least in the Slams. She got to the quarterfinals of Australia and here. She's won two Grand Slams as well, and that doesn't take luck - it takes a really good player to achieve that.
"There are so many things about her that make her such a really good player."

Ana Ivanovic:
Why I like to visit Russia? I think people in our countries have the same mentality. And I always had very good conversation with Russian girls-tennis players. Like Sveta Kuznetsova is a very nice girl. [then she mentions Kiri,Vesnina,Dem,Pavs,Myskina] All these years we somehow could find some topics to talk. But it's difficult to say who is more like a Serbian from them. Though, I think nobody from players would refuse from such a charisma and personality like Kuznetsova has.

Ana suddenly had grown on me!

Sam Stosur: "The perfect doubles partner, coming In early to warm me up for my singles match"

Dec 10th, 2013, 08:43 PM
From an interview with Elena Vesnina:

What does it say?
