This is quite interesting. Dinara can be number one after USopen if:

She wins the title and Jelena doesn't reach the final
She reaches the final and Elena does not win the title,Jelena does not reach the semifinal, and Ana does not reach the quarterfinal.I prefer this scenario - Dinara wins the title not facing Jelena as the opponent . It would be nicer if she plays Lindsay since she's retiring. Sort of like Justine Henin at Berlin. lol!

For the indoor season, Dinara needs to defend around 300pts...she played Stuttgart, Moscow, Zurich and Linz last year.

Serena has 400pts to defend, JJ 470+, Dementieva 600,and Ivanovic 650.

At the moment, I think she has Tokyo, Beijing, Moscow on her schedule and I think it will be very tough for her to end the season as number 1.
One can only hope she'll at least win all the tournaments she'll enter esp the year end championships

Oh ok...we are not having high expectations here, huh?
I just hope that she's doing well the rest of the year. She didn't qualify for YEC last year, so there she definitely earns extra points.
As for the no.1 ranking, if she doesn't make it this year she'll have a big opportunity in the beginning of next year because she didn't start too well into 2008.

Oh ok...we are not having high expectations here, huh?
.

Oh yeah, dreams are for free anyway so why not dream big for her
And if you really calculate the points, its not impossible but its definitely very difficult

Blanche Devereux
Sep 7th, 2008, 01:55 PM
I calculated how many points the top 8 have to defend for the rest of the season:

Jankovic: 477
S Williams: 411
Ivanovic: 651
Dementieva: 576
Safina: 306
Sharapova: 557
Kuznetsova: 550
V Williams: 280

If you subtract the points being defended this fall from their current point total, this is what everyone will be building on until the end of the season:

Jankovic: 3488 (plus a possible 300 if she wins tonight = 3788)
S Williams: 3350 (plus a possible 300 if she wins tonight = 3650)
Safina: 3051
Dementieva: 2854
Ivanovic: 2881
Sharapova: 2484
V Williams: 2106
Kuznetsova: 2021

I think at this point if they keep having decent results, and depending who wins tonight, Serena and Jelena would be diffult for anyone to catch. Dinara has a good chance of finishing 3rd or 4th this year, which would be great. YEC is worth a lot of points, though (750 for the winner). I think it's very possible there will still be a race for the year ending #1 going into Doha.

enchantrezz
Sep 7th, 2008, 03:08 PM
Barring injury, number 3 is certainly attainable for Dinara and she can also be in the race for the top ranking. But to be honest I would rather she finishes not number 1.

To be seeded number 1 next year in AO when she has not yet won a grand slam can be a joke and will just put more pressure for her to prove her ranking.

The best scenario will be winning AO and getting the top ranking at the same time.
In a way, this was what happened to Hingis. She reached semis in the Usopen losing to Graf then in the fall season she was winning tournaments and after being the finalist in the YEC she reached the number 4 ranking.

She was seeded number 2 in the AO where she won her first grand slam then 2 mos after she became number 1.

I agree. Look at all the complaining that happened when Jankovic became #1 without winning a slam. Being #1 would just create so much talk around her and pressure to win the AO. I think a great goal would be to be #3 or #4 going into the AO and then she hopefully have a great draw with her own quarter.

She did Gold Coast and Sydney last year before the AO. I wonder if she'll commit to Sydney this year after Hopman cup. I wish she wouldn't. Sydney ends the day before the AO and if she went deep in the week she'd only have a day or two to get to Melbourne, practice, and rest.

enchantrezz
Sep 7th, 2008, 04:12 PM
With the new WTA calendar rules implementing next year, its more likely she'll skip Sydney tournament and will use her time in Hopman cup as a warm up for AO.

Lets hope she thinks the same way as we do

I think that's the best "solution" as well.
I don't want to hear all this talk about "worst no.1 of all times" again just because she hasn't won a slam yet. And I predict that if Dinara would get to no.1 this year that GM starts to rant about all the tournaments she's playing anf that this is the only reason she's no.1 :o

1 - Serena - 4091
2 - Jankovic - 3965
3 - Ivanovic - 3532
4 - Dementieva - 3480
5 - Safina - 3357

And you compare the number of points they'll defend for the rest of the season:
S Williams: 411
Jankovic : 477
Ivanovic: 651
Dementieva: 576
Safina: 306

Its definitely looking good for Dinara, right ? ;)

I just can't see her performing any worse than 2005-2007 especially with her amazing support system that she never had before. I think she can safely with consistent good performances in mainly tier 1 events stay in the top 5 AT LEAST for a long long time. I really want her to win a title and become no.1 like her brother, i know it would mean a helluva lot for :pher *i sense tears!* i SOO badly want her to win the AO with all my heart, i just love it when fate steps in and fits all the pieces and i feel like safina's performance definitely indicates that is all going VERY well for her.

Her team have shown very good judgement which is very pleasing, after 4 tier one titles this year, GS's are the next logical step, safina's proven herself to be one of the best WTA tour player out there, why the haters i dont know? (maybe they're ivanovic fans - whose coaches are not showing good judgement in my mind to solve ana's diabolical performance woes)

There are definately more haters from the Dementieva camp. The Sharapova fans were bad after Roland Garros but they cooled off after Sharapova got injured.

I think that the Dementieva fans really thought that she would be the number one Russian after Sharapova pulled out for the rest of the season but Dinara has stepped on that dream and now got a comfortable lead which they know will increase after Moscow.

They are just really bitter and will probably get over it if Dinara proves she is there to stay next year. :)

Well serena ain't the world no.1 anyway funny how her us open points only lasted for like 2 weeks, JJ is a hard grafter. I wonder how Safina will cope with the russian pressure in her home town and finally being recognised as the RUSSIAN NO.1. i think the real threats are JJ and Venus and close behind Zvonareva

My take, if Safina is worthy of number 1 ranking, she should be able beat Venus, no excuses .

i agree. it seems like the right time to go in with 'guns blazing' into this match, i think it just seems like the best time to beat someone formidable like venus and the fact that its their FIRST meeting and if safina consistently shoots winners and has a good solid booming serve than it will send out a stronge message that she's not gonna let up any time soon and wants to be no.1

It just seems like everythings falling into place concerning safina becoming no.1 Im gonna as far to say if Safina beats Venus and does it by playing very good high octane tennis than i think she will be no.1 by the end of the year. Don't hold me to it hahahah

Dinara's " How to reach Number 1 this year ":

1.Win Kremlin Cup ( attainable..has a good draw )
2. Win YEC or at least reach the final ( if she's rank number 2 she wont face JJ and Serena in early rounds )

3. Pray JJ will lose before SFs at the ff tournaments:

a. Moscow - possible meet up with Venus in QF
b. Zurich - top entry list : JJ , Ivanovic, Venus, Vera

*Aga,Patty,Chakky,Bartoli,Flavia,Caro, Vika,Nadia,Alize,Domi
* any can meet JJ at QF

c. YEC

Dinara 3782 - 195 = 3587
with Moscow points:

QF= 3697
SF= 3782
F = 3887
W = 4017 :drool:

Fall Facts & Figures: 10 Questions about No. 1

By Robert Waltz

THE WOMEN

1. How many players have a chance of ending the year at No. 1?

Theoretically, Jelena Jankovic, Serena Williams, Dinara Safina, Elena Dementieva, Ana Ivanovic, Svetlana Kuznetsova, Venus Williams, and Vera Zvonareva all have chances. Maria Sharapova would also be on the list if she were playing.

2. Who has a good chance?

Jankovic, Serena, and Safina.

Kuznetsova, Venus, and Zvonareva don't have enough events scheduled to have a chance of overtaking the top three. Either of them would need titles at Moscow, Zurich and Doha. Ivanovic is quite far back, and her recent results aren't cause for optimism. Dementieva is only a little better off, though she is in better form.

But Ivanovic, Dementieva, and Kuznetsova do have a chance of moving up to No. 3 if any of them has a good fall season.

3. What does Jankovic have to do to clinch?

Win the year-end championships in Doha, or win any other title plus one other good result. Beyond that, it depends on how others do. Taking each player's best 17 scores so far -- i.e. her guaranteed minimum points total at the end of the season -- Jankovic has about a 400-point lead on the competition.

4. What does Serena have to do?

Because she's not playing until Doha, Serena has to win the year-end championships and hope that Jankovic earns fewer than 350 points at Moscow, Zurich, and Doha. That's a very tall order -- in round numbers, all Jankovic needs is three semifinals to block her.

5. What does Safina have to do?

Safina is roughly tied with Serena, and she will be playing Moscow, so she currently looks like the main threat to Jankovic. A title at Moscow would effectively put her even with Jankovic, meaning that whoever does better at Doha would be the year-end No. 1.

yeah, #2 is the possible best this year.
if she could decrease the big gap (800pts) to 300-400 points, she will be in "striking range" at the AO, because JJ has to defend semifinal points there, and Dina has nothing to defend. ;)

Seems like a strategical plan to have been rubbish and gone out in 1st rounds for so long and than BANG! this year she plays amazing and has a great chance of being no.1...unlike JJ who played everywhere and has to defend soo much! actually there was no official/unofficial statement from the WTA about the pointdouble thing, only the ATP hint some info.
from ATP:
Grand Slam: 2000 (Winner), 1200 (Runner-up), 720 (SF), 360 (QF)
Masters 1000: 1000 (Winner), 600 (Runner-up) 360 (SF), 180 (QF)

if ATP will use this GS point-system, the WTA will use too, thats sure.
and they will recalculate the 2008 points after dec 31, i guess.

well, i don't know too much neither.

if they want to use new point system (but it's just rumor yet. for example GS winner=2000points), it will be really unfair after the AO, if only one GS winner has 2000 points, and the others, RG-Wimby-USO champs only has 1000 points, because the difference is too big, not just 1-2 hundred points. so they need to recalculate all GS, TierI-s and others points. if not, they are the DUMBEST. but nobody knows the exact points what they will use.

and next year, only best 16 points will count. not 17, like now.
(So Dinara will lose 40 points from Indian Wells 2008 anyway, i think.)

No problem, it's clearly a clever ploy to make us miss you even more when you don't update :awww: and i's working! :D

Well it seems the margins for Dina to overtake Serena is the same as Elena would need to overtake Dina..it's all very close...

well, Serena has to defend 500 points, Lena has 280 points. while Dina lost in the 1st round last year...

after R32, this is how it looks:
JJ 8580
Dina 8030
Ree 7712
Lena 7596

Thanks, Norbert !

And according to ESPN, there are four women with a shot at being No. 1 (unseating Jelena Jankovic) at the end of the Australian Open.

Jelena Jankovic: she has to make the final to stay at the top

Dinara Safina: if she wins the Oz Open, she's No. 1

Serena: she has to win, and Jankovic can't make the final

Dementieva: she has to win, and Jankovic can't make the final.

This scenario reminds me of last year's USOpen. :p

now:
Serena - 9432
Dinara - 9150
JJ - 8580
LenaD - 8216

before the red clay season (1st week of may), they have to defend:
Serena - 2410pts (Won - Bangalore, Miami, Charleston)
Dinara - 380pts (QF - Miami)
JJ - 1230 (F - Miami, SF - IW)
LenaD - 1010 (Won - Dubai, SF - Charleston, Paris, QF - Miami)

so, without these points:
Dinara - 9150-380= 8770pts
JJ - 8580-1230= 7350pts
LenaD - 8216-1010= 7206pts

PersephoneDisco
Mar 31st, 2009, 11:28 AM
It will be kind of weird to be No. 2 to -- because I think the girl that would take over would be like -- lost early here and hasn't really, whatever. So it's like whatever. I don't really care.
...
But, I mean, at this point doesn't matter how many Grand Slams you win, can't be number one. Even if you get to the finals of Wimbledon and win the US Open and Australia, that's not what the No. 1 player gets. It is what it is. It's like, whatever. You have to like, I don't know, win all the smaller tournaments to be No. 1.
...
Like I'm not -- my whole goal in life isn't to be No. 1. Yeah, I want to be No. 1, but I feel better about winning Australia or US Open or winning the French Open or anything like that. I think I feel better with that. Or winning here. Just winning titles. Obviously winning titles doesn't make you No. 1 on this tour anymore.

-- Serena Williams, on the possibility of losing the #1 ranking to "the girl" that is Dinara Safina.

Okay, Serena? Whatever! Why you so rubbish at remembering names, Dina has only been around on the tour for 7 years!

Hopefully Dinara does not hear this and not want the ground to swallow her up even more :scared:

To answer your question Lyra, if Serena would have lost to Z yesterday, Dina would have been no.1 However Forty deuce blog say it perfectly "Sad for Zheng. But I have to admit, this would have been a really shitty way for Dinara to get the #1 ranking. Right now, with Dina out, Serena has to make the final to stay at #1. That means she'll probably have to go through her sister to do it. Dra-Ma.

Please, Serena. Defend your title. I don't think I can stand the thought of Dinara obtaining the #1 ranking and knowing she's playing like crap and doesn't "deserve" it. JJ, the queen of delusion, was equipped to handle all the haters. Dina, I'm afraid, is not"

and blame Serena for this situation because if she not so miserable outside of GSs, this thing never happen.
Last year when she withdrew from Moscow because "injury", and next week everybody saw the pictures when she was surfing with friends. she don't give a shit about the tour, so why she deserves more the "WTA TOUR SINGLES RANKING #1" then others?
and withdraw from SF in GDF Paris, because another "injury" and two days later she had no problem to play in Dubai?

whatev...
