Maria should make it to the 3rd round against Jankovic. My biggest concern is jet lag.

I suppose Maria's general lack of consistency is a cause of concern too. :P

Tricky looking draw for Makiri. Still if she isn`t too jet lagged and can show some good form, i can see her getting a couple of wins and likely meeting up JJ in the third round. Hopefully Makiri will do well in Montreal.

If Maria ends up playing Jankovic, she needs to not to be tired to have a shot at winning. The last 2 times Maria played her she was pretty tired particularly their last match in Rome this year where Maria lost 6-1 6-1. In their previous 2 matchs in which Maria wasn't tired, she lost 7-5 in the 3rd on grass and won on hard court. :)

Yep, Anne is a tough one but inconsistent. But Maria is top 20 now. She has to beat these kind of players.

Will be hard for Maria to stay in top 20.
I really hope she gets to play Jelena and wins again like in San Diego.
But even Keothavong looks tough now. We should really look at it match by match.

I hope Masha left Slovenia as soon as possible after friday's defeat. It's a long way, though not having to play on the monday is a real advantage. She should be nearer 100% fitness now and a loss to Keovothong would be very disapointing IMO.

No one should be looking past her next match against Dubois. It would not surprise me at all if she lost her next match especially since its against a Canadain who I'm sorry to say it is much more inspired than Maria on her home turf. Just look at what Dancevic does when he plays in Canada. It would not shock me if she lost her second round match.

Great Match for Dubois and Canada saw this result coming from a mile away/ Kirilenko played to tentative in the first set and I didn't see the third set or tiebreak so not sure what she did. She needs to find a median I've never seen her play a hard court match where she's stock to one game plain. Crowd was great though similar to when Dancevic plays and I wish Dubois the best of luck since Pelletier is out.

I don't agree that Dubois was doing nothing.
She actually played a great match. I think she can even challenge Jankovic is she keeps this up.

Maria started bad but after that it looked ok.
35 winners and 26 errors in set 2 & 3.
She just had to serve it out at 5-4. I actually don't know what went wrong.
Maria's shot hadn't much effect at Dubois and it was mostly hard to put her under pressure.
The nice thing was that Maria went a lot to the net in the 2nd part of the match. Which was a good choice cause she had a lot of points with it.
In the TB you saw it coming. The missed smash was deadly.

But if there's a shot of the day then it should go to Maria.
First point of 2nd set :worship:

I can't say what Maria needs, but this play won't lead her to top 10. There has to chance a lot. That she misses some power looks like to be a bigger problem than expected.

It's sad to say but we can already say better luck in the next tournament. I don't care so much for doubles, but she may win it.

28th in the RACE and now top 20 anymore in the rankings

The problem is Maria won't learn from another crushing loss. She really struggles in the clutch and it's holding her career back from being an even better career than it is. What, the only tournaments she can play and win are small red clay tournaments?

And players who join the WTA Tour at age 15 like Maria don't improve much in their early 20's as their career paths are already set as is there ability to fight and play tough tennis. Masha is having a nice career and that cannot be forgotten. But she has the ability to be a better player than she is.

I`m disappointed as everyone else here is about Makiri`s loss. It was frustrating to watch her in the last part of the match, especially when she couldn`t put Dubois away when she was serving for the match and then went away from the nice backhand down the line, which was working so well for her. :( It`s so frustrating that she hasn`t been able to step it up in the bigger events lately. :(

Well I've had the chance to sleep on it, but I'm still smarting from this result. All things considered Dubois is a player Masha really should beat, no argument. She has to learn that you can't afford to come out cold and lose the first set like that and then having recovered to then blow the match serving at 5-4 in the third - remember she also failed to serve out the match against Keovathong. She just HAS to improve on this aspect.

And yet.... her opponent was playing in front of her home fans and clearly inspired. The reports suggest Masha was intermittently playing some great tennis and it's good to hear that she was getting to the net. Someone mentioned a lack of power and maybe we need to take into account her recent illness and the pictures make that clear. So disapppointed yes, but maybe, just maybe, something better is around the corner. I hope the doubles win bought Masha's smile back :)

Yes it was like that.
Just looking at the last 2 sets, Maria didn't do much wrong. I don't remember much errors from her. But it was really hard working to win the points. Using her backhand and coming to the net was almost the only way.
If she just had a FH like Ana, the match would have be done in 2.

Maria.  She should be winning these kind of matches, her opponents might be playing well but she should be playing even better. And it's not like she was totally out of this match, she was serving for the match in the 3rd set wasn't she?

These kind of losses certainly won't help shake off her "over rated" tag.

Maria has had worse losses. It wasn't lack of power at all in my opinion. She was too patchy and that first set was terrible. She looked she wasn't moving for her shots. Her forehand was full of spin at times and sometimes too much so she should flatten it out a bit more at times.

I'm confident she has the game though and the athleticism.

And Dubois gets EVERYTHING back. If Ana was playing against Steph that same day, it would have been tough considering the way Ana played against Petra. Yes, it helps to have a huge forehand, huge serve but I don't believe that's what it takes to move up. I just hope her confidence is still intact.

It felt like I was watching Igor or Cornet play. It's fine though but sometimes she would moonball one of Dubois' moonballs and that's not okay for her game and what she should be playing.

Always nice to hear from her after a loss, to know how she's feeling.

Maria, what would be your biggest regret about the match ? If you could change something, what would you do different ?
I think I donít made a good start. I made a lot of mistakes. Then in the second set, each game was very, very tight. Always advantage, deuceÖ I won four games in a row these tight games. I start to play much better in the second set. In the third set, we both played very good. Every game was also so close. I was up 5-4 and I was serving with the new balls and I should have, I think, done like this game because I missed two balls in the volley. One is long, another one short one. So I should have donít make this, especially with this score. I think it was my mistake, my big mistake. Anyway, I was trying till the match is over. But maybe today she was better than me.

It seems like overall youíre a better player than her, better strokes, but sheís very strong mentally. Did you feel that ?
Yeah, she was strong with the legs. She was moving so good from the beginning till the end of the match. I felt that sheís ready by physical condition. Me, I was with my legs a little bit tired. I got so tight in my legs. For me moving was very difficult. But, anyway, itís not excuse. Also, like the people who are supporting her, you know, the fans, that was like so loud today. But I understand they wanted her to win, so you couldnít do anything with that.

Did you feel they were unfair ?
No, no, no. Nothing is unfair. Itís fair, you know, when the people wants to win the player from this country. Of course, itís right to donít make attention for the people. But, well, itís always like this. For me, I can say it was difficult to play like with the people. But she played good actually today.

Have you played in those conditions before, with a crowd that much for your opponent ?
You know, never. I never had this situation. No, maybe in Fed Cup, when we played against Belgium in Belgium, when I played with Kim Clijsters. The people were like also so loud. But itís Fed Cup, you play for your country. Itís not excuse for me with the people. Itís just she was better today.

Did you know much about her before the match ?
No, I didnít know her, I didnít know how sheís playing. But I heard from my coach. I was practicing once with her on the clay court. And also I saw the results here, and she always have a good results here at home, soÖ In other tournaments when we was playing the same tournaments, she didnít play well. She always lose like first round of something. But at home she plays good.

What did your coach tell you to look for from her ?
Well, he told me that actually she doesnít do a lot with her backhand. But she doesnít miss a lot of backhands. So then I decided to change to play to her forehand (smiling). Maybe some points I wasnít so aggressive, you know, just waiting, and she made some winners. I think for me, from my side, I need to be more aggressive. I tried to come to the net. I won a lot of points in the net. I think everything, when I came to the net, I won all. These two balls which I lose, this was important.

The overhead you missed in the tiebreak, was that a good lob or you just missed it ?
Just when I miss it, I just felt my legs, you know, like.

Collapse ?
No. Like I have a bubble gum here (the bottom of her shoe). I couldnít move. I did something with the hand, but it was a terrible smash.

Are you very disappointed ?
Of course Iím very disappointed because I wanted to win so much today. Well, so itís like this, you know. Some day you win, some day you lose. So just I needs to practice more and concentrate on the next tournament.

Are you still wearing the Stella McCartney clothes ?
Yes, as you can see. Even I came in my skirt.

It seems that Cara and Liezel were too experienced for Maria and Flavia. They are the top team in the world so there's no shame in losing to them, although the scoreline was a bit one-sided. Did anyone see the match? What happened exactly?

Oh, and I also am sure that Maria is too good a singles player to just be a doubles specialist. I also think singles is important in her mind, so she won't stop playing it.
