Brother-sister team for Hopman Cup

July 21, 2008 12:34pm

FORMER world No. 1 Marat Safin will join his sister, Dinara Safina, at the 2009 Hopman Cup tennis tournament in Perth.
With Australian pair Lleyton Hewitt and Casey Dellacqua already confirmed starters, tournament director Paul McNamee announced the Russian siblings as the second group for the tournament.

McNamee revealed he was still chasing Serbia's World No. 3, Novak Djokovic, who made it to the final last year with Jelena Jankovic before losing to US pairing Serena Williams and Mardy Fish.

Safin, one of the most colourful players in world tennis, is currently ranked No. 40 in the world but returned to form at Wimbledon where he made the semi-finals before losing to world No.1 Roger Federer.

Safina, 22, has burst into the women's top 10 after making it to the final of the French Open, where she lost to world No. 1 Ana Ivanovic.

It will be the first time the Russian siblings have teamed together.

The 21st Hopman Cup will be played at the Burswood Dome from January 3-9.

Safina is no one's weak sister now
By Jim Thomas, Staff Writer
Article Launched: 07/23/2008 11:06:32 PM PDT

Dinara Safina is no longer best known as former No. 1 men's player Marat Safin's precocious little sister. And she's no longer just another in a long line of promising young Russian tennis players.
Not after winning the German Open in May and then reaching the French Open final in June.

No, at the tender age of 22, the powerful 5-foot-11, 155-pound Safina is establishing her own identity. She needs no association, either brotherly or nationally, to earn recognition on the WTA, where she stands on her own as an emotional and aggressive force whose best tennis is ahead of her.

"The French was very big (for my confidence)," Safina said Wednesday after disposing of China's Shuai Peng, 6-2, 6-3, in the second round of the East West Bank Classic at Home Depot Center in Carson.
"I always feel I can do better, and then finally in Germany and at the French the results are big. It just proved to me what I can do when I play well."

Safina's best results came on Europe's clay, but she clearly is comfortable on the hardcourts that are the staple of the U.S. summer circuit.

In her first match after Wimbledon, she was relatively sharp and used her strong groundstrokes to overpower Peng whenever she needed to. She also displayed the athleticism that serves her well on clay and the feisty competitiveness that makes her future so exciting.

"She's not an easy opener after my vacation," said Safina, who is fourth-seeded in Carson and ninth-ranked in the world. "I think I played a pretty solid match, so I'm pretty happy.

"I have my best success on clay, but I like the hardcourts. You have to be a little more aggressive, take the ball a little sooner. I enjoy that."

Starting with this week's stay in Carson, where the road to a semifinal match against top seed Jelena Jankovic appears wide open, this promises to be an eventful summer for the still-improving Safina. She's 29-13 in 2008 and holds victories over the likes of Lindsay Davenport, Serena Williams, Elena Dementieva, Maria Sharapova and Svetlana Kuznetsova going into her first-ever Olympic appearance next month in Beijing.

Although she's a fighter on the court, she refuses to admit she carries lofty goals into the rest of the summer, including the U.S. Open.

"I just want to be healthy," she said, "then let's see how far I can get. I do take it one match at a time. There is no easy opener. You must be ready."

She is, course, excited about the Beijing Games.

"It is my first time, so I hope to do well," she said. "I'm not sure yet if I will go to the opening ceremonies because we play two days later, but if everyone says `let's go, let's go,' then of course I will go."

And if she doesn't follow up her French Open breakthrough with more semifinal or final appearances or a gold medal this summer? She will not be crushed.

"What can you do," she said, smiling.

Her breakthrough season has led to at least one change in her attitude, though. Next year, Safina will play with her brother in a mixed doubles event at the 2009 Hopman Cup.

"Dinara didn't feel really worthy at the time to play with her brother," tournament director Paul McNamee said recently. "She holds him in such high regard.

"But for the first time she feels as if she's worthy to play with her brother and why not? She reached the final of a major this year and is in the top 10 singles players in the world now."

Safina smiled when asked how exciting it was to play alongside her more famous brother, who at 28 is trying to regain his once-dominating form.

"Of course it is exciting," she said. "I hope we don't fight. Always he is not happy with my game."

That can't be true anymore. After all, it is Safina who is the current top-10 player in the family.

TOP 20 Slovak Star for HOPMAN

PERTH. World number 20 Dominika Cibulkova will partner Hopman XVII Champion Dominik Hrbaty at this year’s Hyundai Hopman Cup. Slovak Republic, a two time Hopman Champion, becomes the fifth team confirmed for this year’s ITF International Mixed Teams Championship.

19 year old Dominika Cibulkova has powered through the top 100 this year in her second full year on the WTA Tour starting at the Gold Coast where she won two rounds, which she followed up by qualifying in Sydney before progressing to Doha where she had wins over Lucie Safarova, Patty Schnyder and Venus Williams on her way to the quarter finals. Further success in Miami and an impressive run at Amelia Island with victories over Alize Cornet, Amelie Mauresmo, Anna Chakvetadze and Victoria Azarenka saw her in her first Tier II final. She then skyrocketed into the Top 20 with another runner up performance this time at the Tier I Canadian Open in Montreal with victories over Elena Dementieva, Nadia Petrova, world number one Jelena Jankovic, before losing to Dinara Safina. A new Slovak star was born.

Dominik Hrbaty is a Hopman veteran and is heading back to Perth in his run to retirement. He contacted Tournament Director Paul McNamee earlier in the year and advised him that he would love to come back and play in Perth with an exciting youngster Dominika Cibulkova. A crowd favourite and former world number 12, Hrbaty won Hopman XVII with Daniela Hantuchova. It will be his fourth appearance at the Hyundai Hopman Cup.

The Slovak Republic joins Germany’s Sabine Lisicki and Nicolas Kiefer, France, with top 20 playersAlize Cornet and Gilles Simon, Australia, represented by WA’s Casey Dellacqua and Lleyton Hewitt, and Russia with the brother/sister combination of Marat Safin and world number 3 Dinara Safina, in the eight nation field.

The 21st Hyundai Hopman Cup will be played at Burswood Dome from 3 – 9 January 2009.

Big Guns Set for Hopman Cup

The United States and Russia are set for a heavyweight showdown in January's Hopman Cup tennis tournament in Perth with former world No. 1 Serena Williams and crowd favourite James Blake confirming their participation.

The US, a five times winner of the Hopman Cup, have been handed the top seeding but will have their work cut out to knock off second-seeded Russia, who will be represented by sibling act Marat Safin and Dinara Safina.

The two countries will meet in the final should they top their respective groups.

But Safin's participation is far from guaranteed after the two-time Grand Slam winner indicated he may take a break from the game following his 6-0, 7-6 (7-4) loss to Juan Monaco in the first round of the Paris Masters on Monday.

Hopman Cup tournament director Paul McNamee said Safin's manager told him the star Russian would announce his intentions in the first week of November.

World No. 20 Igor Andreev is on standby if Safin, whose ranking has slipped to 31, pulls out.

"Of course any tournament would miss Marat if he can't make it," McNamee said.

"But I think having a top 20 player come in like Andreev -- I wouldn't say there's any downside to the Russian team but there's only one Marat Safin, so I hope he doesn't retire because he's such a great character of the game."

Former world No.1 Marat Safin still on Hopman Cup card
Article from: AAP

By Glen Foreman

November 22, 2008 02:44pm

HOPMAN Cup director Paul McNamee says former tennis world No.1 Marat Safin is still on the card for the Perth tournament in January.
Safin raised speculation of an intended retirement late last month when he lost in the first round of the Paris Masters to Argentina's Juan Monaco.

The fiery Russian was expected to play at the January 3-9 competition at Burswood Dome but was in doubt after he said: "I need to sit down and relax and just enjoy my life without tennis (for) a couple of months."

But Mr McNamee quelled fears of a Safin no-show at a recent sponsors' tennis pro-am function.

Mr McNamee was questioned whether the Russian's management had advised Hopman Cup organisers of a withdrawal, and confirmed no communication had been received.

But the tournament director is understood to have responded with strong belief of the 28-year-old's participation at the Hopman Cup and replied that at this stage, it could be assumed Safin would come to Perth because he would have said otherwise by now.

Mr McNamee confirmed the stance to PerthNow and was quick to assure that no news was good news.

"We still haven't heard anything and hopefully that's a good thing," said Mr McNamee.

In response to Safin's announcement of a possible retirement, Mr McNamee said the Russian was still considered likely for the Perth tournament.

"It's a big thing, retiring - it's not a small decision. I know from experience with a lot of players that it's one thing to think about it but it's another thing to really do it. I'm still hopeful that he'll keep playing," Mr McNamee said previously.

"He's such a character - there's only one Marat Safin."

Mr McNamee said Russian top-20 singles player Igor Andreev had been put on standby in the event Safin did not come to Perth.

But didnt Dinara say something a few weeks ago about being a performer and playing for the crowd and how her performance needs to be enjoyed by them. If she realises that playing to the crowd is an integral part of being a sports person in the public domain, a website is needed. Or maybe she is even soo adorable that she didn't think she was Marat-website worthy of having her own until she got some results:angel:

I think you are right. Marat got his own only in 2005, 5 years after his breakthrough year. And it wasn't his idea, it was initiated and made by the fan. Dinara is probably like Marat, she doesn't think he needs it.

" there is nothing yet about the complete plans for 2009 - I am still waiting to find out.
The same with St Anton - waiting for confirmation that he has actually arrived there.

At the moment lets just be thankful that he is still looking at playing even if it is in exhibition matches. There was always the chance that he would play Hopman - think they made a big offer to the two of them and also Dinara didn't want to play there with anyone other than Marat. So sister pressure was applied just a little bit I think! http://maratsafin.freeforums.org/images/smiles/icon_biggrin.gif

Anyhow we shall see what happens and if he is already in Australia then maybe he will gravitate towards Kooyong and the Oz Open.

Trim Safina ready to team up with brother

PERTH - It looks like one of the most volatile pairings in mixed doubles history but rising Russian star Dinara Safina will happily bow to the experience of older brother and former world No.1 Marat Safin when they team up in the Hopman Cup, starting here Saturday.

While Safin enjoys his traditional New Year’s Eve celebrations in Moscow, a slimmed down Safina has already arrived in Perth to prepare for the unique mixed teams event and the subsequent Australian Open.

Safina wasn’t revealing exactly how much weight she had lost after a training session in sweltering heat here on Tuesday but she looked in the best condition of her career as she seeks to build on a breakthrough season this year that carried her to No.3 in the world.

And although her brother’s star appears to be on the wane just as hers climbs, his status as a dual Grand Slam winner, and more importantly an older brother, means Safina will bow to his judgement on the court in Perth.

“He is still older than me, I think he is going to be the boss on the court,” she said on Tuesday.

“It was my dream to play together with my brother one time and I always wanted to come here and play together.

“I hope it is going to be fun for us.”

Safin is known for his volatile temperament and although his sister is making a concerted effort to control her emotions on court, she said it was a shared family trait.

“I am the same, I do break them (racquets),” she said.

“We competed to see who broke more racquets last year—me or him.

“I am trying to be a bit more calm and I am working with my coach on that.”

Safina had a poor start to 2008 and was a first-round loser to Hopman Cup rival Sabine Lisicki at the Australian Open.

However, it is a different Safina almost 12 months on, winning four tournaments this year and reaching the French Open final.

“I had a good off-season and I have been practising hard,” she said.

“It is completely different coming here this year than when I came last year.

“I am really looking forward to starting the matches, that is what it is about.”

With her growing confidence and improved fitness, Safina has set her sights on lasting into the second week of the Australian Open for the first time.

She also hopes to complete a unique family double by claiming the top ranking in women’s tennis in 2009.

The Russians open their Hopman Cup campaign on Sunday against Italy, while the tournament starts with the tie between France and Asian Hopman Cup winner Chinese Taipei on Saturday.

Safina Hopes Hopman Cup Helps Crack at No. 1
30/12/2008

By Chris Pike

RUSSIA's top-ranked female player Dinara Safina wants to reach the world No.1 spot in 2009 and hopes to kick-start her campaign in Perth at the Hyundai Hopman Cup.

Safina, who will partner older brother and former No. 1 Marat Safin, reached a career-best No. 2 ranking in 2008 after a strong run of form mid-season and now hopes to continue that for all of 2009.

She arrives in Perth to make her Hyundai Hopman Cup debut and with it possibly being the only chance to player with her brother; both Dinara and Marat want to make the most of the experience.

Safina is excited to be playing with her older brother and is glad he put off retirement long enough to play alongside her.

"It's great. It was my dream to play together with my brother one time and I always wanted to play together here with him. Luckily, they asked us to play here this year and hopefully it's going to be fun for us and the crowd who is going to come to watch and support us," Safina said.

"Maybe here we can practice together, but we don’t get to do that very often. He's still older than me, so he will be the boss on the court.

"It was already for a while that he was thinking about retiring and I just want him to be happy. He's been on the Tour for such a long time and there comes a point where you don’t want to travel anymore. Whatever decision he makes I want him to be happy, whether that's on the court or off the court."

If Safina reaches No. 1, the siblings will become the first brother-sister combination to be on top of the world rankings and while it is her goal, she is focused on a strong performance at the Burswood Dome first.

"It's a very high goal and I just want to focus on playing my game. If I am able to do that, then the result will come. It is a goal for this year," she said.

"We play some matches and it allows you to work on many things while doing that. It will be a good preparation for Sydney and then the Australian Open."

Safina continued to work hard training once her season ended and on arrival in Perth completed a running session at Perry Lakes Stadium on Monday and a good outdoor hit out in scorching heat on Tuesday.
While it was a bit too hot, she feels in good shape.

"I had a good off-season, was practicing hard and I'm really looking forward to starting the matches, which is what it's really about. It is the second day that I've been practicing and it was a little bit too hot, I had to take many breaks," she said.

"I've been in Spain practicing and it was warm, but it cannot compare to this. My fitness helps me to play my game. I'm trying to play aggressive and hard, so good fitness helps that. Compared to last year, I've lost a lot of kilos."

Safins Team Up For First Time Against Talented Italians
3/01/2009

By Chris Pike

RUSSIA's brother-sister combo of Marat Safin and Dinara Safina team up for the first time in Sunday's Session to take on Italy's Simone Bolelli and Flavia Pennetta.

It will be the first time Safina and Safin team up for any tournament and both are desperate to enjoy themselves in what could be their only chance to play together. Fans are also expected to be the big winner with their pairing making for a dream combination.

Safin is already a past world No. 1 and two-time Grand Slam winner, while his younger sister Safina, 23, reached as high as No. 2 during 2008.

She is desperate to reach the top ranking and if she does, the siblings will become the first to both be No. 1s in the world in the history of the game.

It is Safin's fourth appearance at the Cup, but it hasn’t been a happy hunting ground for the enigmatic star, with him only claiming six wins from 18 matches.

Things won't begin easy for him and his sister in their opening appearance, either, with Pennetta and Bolelli fresh off tremendous 2008 years.

Pennetta currently sits at her career-high ranking of 13 after a year that she made her first Grand Slam quarter final (US Open), and reached two other finals. She also won her third career doubles title, so will bring that in her kit bag to the Hyundai Hopman Cup as well.

Bolelli is ranked at 41, just two places below his best and he thrives on representing Italy having done so in Davis Cup, World Team Cup and at the Olympic Games.

The Session will begin with both Safina and Pennetta playing on the Burswood Dome for the first time and with the world No. 3 battling the No. 13 it's sure to be a tremendous battle.

Pennetta will also be out to reverse a 0-5 record against Safina, with the most recent win for the Russian coming at last year's US Open.

Bolelli then makes his Hopman Cup debut against the big Russian great and the Italian will be out to make it two from two in tussles against Safin, after getting the better of him at Barcelona in 2007.

With Safin only arriving in Perth last night, his little sister did all the talking in the lead up to the tournament. She is feeling physically fit and excited about teaming with big brother.

"I had a good off-season, was practicing hard and I'm really looking forward to starting the matches, which is what it's really about," Safina said.

"I'm trying to play aggressive and hard, so I'm working hard on my fitness because it helps me play my game. Compared to last year, I've lost a lot of kilos.

"It was my dream to play together with my brother one time and I always wanted to play together here with him. Luckily, they asked us to play here this year and hopefully it's going to be fun for us and the crowd who is going to come to watch and support us."

Marat Safin fans get an eyeful

RUSSIAN tennis star Marat Safin's arrival in Perth for the Hopman Cup was delayed by a late flight last night - but he went straight to the Cup ball in shorts and a T-shift, carrying his racquet bag.
And he sported the remnants of what appeared to be bruising under his left eye and a cut near his right eye.

Safin, ranked 29th worldwide, is scheduled to team with his sister Dinara Safina against Italy today.

The other superstar tennis players had time to swap playing gear for formal attire when they turned out for the ball at Burswood Entertainment Complex.

WA’s tennis sweetheart Casey Dellacqua arrived in a colourful striped number she picked up from Venus in Subiaco, with matching gold heels from Milano.

All the glamour from the Hopman Cup ball

Lleyton Hewitt, who will be teaming up with Dellacqua in the mixed doubles, was looking dapper in a new suit.

Hewitt flew in minus the family, wife Bec was at home with daughter Mia and new son Cruz.

French player Gilles Simon proved a party trouper, coming straight from the first match of the cup to the garden-party themed gala.

Earlier in the day, Dellacqua was spotted signing autographs for fans in Target at Joondalup Lakeside Shopping Centre.

She was sponsored by Target last year after telling the media she did most of her shopping at the store.

Lyra, you should have been his PR assistant!
If I'm gonna get all 'forensic' about it, you'll notice he has bruising on his right and a cut to his left, most people who get in a fight (lets assume that's what happened) they get punched or hit once in one eye. So either he got hit once and knocked back and hurt himself even further or he got hit, fell down and then got hit again. Oh dear this whole business needs to get cleared up before my imagination runs away and i come with other insane situations that may lead to bruising!...

ROB CASEY (Assistant Tournament Director)

DINARA SAFINA (Russia)
MARAT SAFIN (Russia)

(Rob) Thank you ladies and gentlemen.

Marat, congratulations on your win. What’s it like to be back in Perth and playing at the Hopman?

(Marat) Oh thank you very much. It’s all a pleasure. Especially when we have a great companion and family team. Especially with my sister this time. So I couldn’t refuse the offer and I got to play with her. Especially the first time. And especially here. You know it’s a very nice atmosphere. Easy going tournament. And everybody’s enjoying, there’s a lot of people watching. So it’s nice to play. Especially it’s the first tournament, and the first tournament is indoors. So it’s not really rough and you can practise here and outdoors. It’s a really pleasant atmosphere.

It’s pretty much straight off the plane and onto the courts. How are you feeling physically?

(Marat) Well, struggling a little bit. I’ve been flying forever and we arrived very late last night. So I’ll keep on practising a lot. Yes, and yes we warmed up a little bit today, and I actually played my match. And of course it’s tough to play your best tennis, especially when you are just flying for such a long time. It’s difficult to move, difficult to serve, difficult to basically whole thing. Just too complicated to play and to play good tennis.

There’s been a lot of talk about, you know, possible retirement. So what sort of motivation are you carrying into this year then?

(Marat) Well, just it’s probably going to be my last year this year for sure. Because I’m moving to my new life, so I’m not quite sure, that’s why I’m playing. It’s easy for me to play, play good tennis. So hopefully I can enjoy it, and get me some great results.

What do you have lined up?

(Marat) Huh?

After your tennis career?

(Marat) Well, I leave it, I leave it up to me. You know I don’t wanna speak really about it, and just my bosses they know about it. And I wanna do it this way. You’ll see, you’ll see me.

Is this time probably your last time on the tour?

(Marat) Yeah most, most probably yes.

Marat, can we ask you how you damaged your eyes? Or how you got…

(Marat) Working hard. Practising hard.

You indicated that there were some problems in Moscow, or…

(Marat) Yeah well, just some small problem that I wasn’t, I wasn’t in the right place at the right time. So let’s put it at that.

Did you win the fight?

(Marat) Ah yes. I won the fight.

Marat, we see your thumb is injured as well. Was that injured in the same incident?

(Marat) Yep.

And is that ok? Did that…

(Marat) I’m, I’m good. I’m ok.

How long ago did the incident happen?

(Marat) A week ago.

How are you feeling out on the court? Does it affect your vision at all?

(Marat) No, I won my match. I didn’t play for two months, so I think it’s pretty good. It’s a pretty good match. [pause] Any questions for my sister?

Just, sorry Marat, one more on yourself. This will be your last Australian Open, obviously a tournament that you’ve won. How, what sort of a chance do you give yourself there, especially with the good preparation here if you continue to do well this week?

(Marat) Well, we’ll see. You know it’s still two weeks to go and I need to prepare myself a little bit more. And I’m still looking forward to play well there. And I’m looking forward to have a good draw. It’s very poor in there, and a couple of, two, a couple after two rounds I would prefer to play over there with somebody who can give me some pace and so I can get used to the courts and the conditions. And then afterwards there’s third round, third round would be already I can play with somebody, play a tough one. But first rounds I would love to be easy, to have easy. As any other player for sure.

Obviously you’ve shown us a real bit of what you can still do. With a farewell year on tour this year, are you capable of winning another grand slam?

(Marat) Well, it’s complicated. Too many players are playing well. Andy Murray, Djokovic, Nadal, Federer. So I’m not looking, I’m not really looking into doing some great things. But I don’t want to have any pressure on myself. And I wanna just enjoy it, and escape it. I don’t care what the results are going to be. I just wanna have, wanna have fun.

Knowing that it’s your last year on the tour, is that a good thing? It just takes all the pressure off and you can…

(Marat) Yeah, it’s much easier then, then when you have someone expects anything from you. So, so I think it’s much easier to play this way and I hope, that’s why I was saying, that hopefully I can have our best results this year. Because there’s no pressure.

Will you miss the game at all?

(Marat) Not really.

So, you’ve just had enough?

(Marat) I’m okay. I like to play, but I like to enjoy my life and also I’m not really crazy about it. So I just, I’m having fun right now.

Dinara, after having such a successful year last year, what are you hoping to pull from the Australian summer, to get out of it to set you up for this year?

(Dinara) Well, as I didn’t have a great start last year. Especially as I have nothing to defend, I just want to, to play my game and get as far as I can in Sydney and Melbourne in the upcoming tournaments.

And with Marat saying that he’s pretty much playing just to get a chance to play with you, what does that mean to you?

(Dinara) Well, I think I’ve said it already many times. Because it’s kind of a dream to play with him together, and I was like always looking forward to playing here together. And, you know, it came true so hopefully we can enjoy it together and have fun.

How are you finding all the new attention on you, with the new pressure of being one of the top ranking women in the world?

(Dinara) I don’t know. I…

(Marat) I would love to be her, be in her shoes, that’s for sure. So I think she’s, she’s having fun. She will not recognise it but she, she is having fun. For sure.

Dinara, this is your first Hopman Cup. Has Marat told you much about it over the years?

(Dinara) No, actually we try not to talk about tennis. So not really, but we speak about this, no.

DINARA SAFINA (Russia)

Well ladies and gentlemen, your world number three, and spearheading the Perth campaign for Russia, Dinara Safina. Dinara, it seemed like a very competitive match first up for the season, how did you find it out there?

(Dinara) Ah yeah, it actually was not an easy match and she’s a very good player. And I think at the beginning we were both a little bit struggling with the rhythm. You know like to find more points, you know you haven’t played for a while. But I’m happy that I could win this match and to give one point to our family.

Your coach gave us the insight that you’re trying to add real aggression into your tennis. How did you feel you were able to do that today?

(Dinara) Well, I was trying to be aggressive for nothing, that’s what happened. I was like was, when I won the first set I was like “okay, I’m going to be even more aggressive” and yeah, I started very good. I won one point in eight points, so I was like “okay, maybe I should go with that” and try to play two eight for the match and to be more aggressive. And I think I did pretty good after.

You seem have a really good rhythm going peeling off the last six games of the match.

(Dinara) Yeah, well she was really tough and I was like “okay, just”, I started to focus just one point at a time. And I came up with winning all the points and all the games.

This would seem like a season of such great promise for you. You seem in terrific shape. We’ve watched you practise. You’re obviously working extremely hard. And the mantle of the world number one is almost in reach. Is that a focus of yours?

(Dinara) Well, yeah I try not to put so much pressure, you know? Like world number one. ‘Cause the most important thing I think is being healthy. And I think like you said, that I’m working hard and I’m giving 100 percent every game. By doing this and being healthy, I think everything is possible. But obviously it’s my goal. But I’ll try to do everything that’s possible.

Well you’ve done your bit for the family. Now for Marat. Have you had a chance to catch up with him? He was just a late arrival last night.

(Dinara) Well, I saw him hitting with my coach and it was fun to watch them both hitting. I enjoy them. I just hope it’s gonna be a great match that the crowd can enjoy and then to play a nice mixed. I’ll look forward for it.

Is he okay? Is he ready to go?

(Dinara) I think he’s ready to go.

He better be!

(Dinara) I hope so!

Have you told him you want one of those diamond encrusted tennis balls?

(Dinara) I haven’t told him yet. I don’t want to put some pressure on him. But I said already to my coach, I said “it looks pretty good this diamond ball”. And he’s like “okay”. [laughs]

We’re really looking forward to watching the chemistry between the two of you. Are you looking forward to being out on the tennis court alongside him?

(Dinara) I’m really looking forward. I think it was my dream as, as I was growing up because he was my idol. And now I’m a little bit different on the court, but as I was young I was also trying to copy him on the court. Obviously it’s not very nice for a girl to behave like him, but [laughter] but as I’m a girl I was like “okay, maybe it’s something I’m doing a little bit too much”. And now I’m trying to be a little bit more calm and I think it’s helping me a little more.

You keep him on the straight and narrow. We look forward to it. Dinara Safina.

I watched it. They played well at the start but Marat was a zombie by the end. Italy are a strong mixed combination as Pennetta is a very good doubles player. I think that Russia should be able to beat France in the mixed. I also think though that Italy will beat France.

Read some match reports from Aussie fans in the GM thread, they all said it was a great match. Here are some:

"Such a close and great match, I knew Safina would win...but Hsieh pulled out a great effort and I'm so proud of her, she played so well during the third set but the last few games, Dinara was too good. What a great match though. Just shows how much talent Hsieh really does have. :worship:"

" Poor Hsieh, she led 3-1 and 4-2 in the third set. She played FANTASTIC, dominating Safina for a majority of the match.

First set was Safina starting off well and finding her range, the Hsieh broke and came back from a couple of break points and started playing fantastic from the baseline and using her usual touch shouts. Safina hitting quite a bit of errors but was really just confused as to how to play Hsieh and win.

Second set the both started well, then Hsieh got a bit excited and started hitting to many errors. Safina served well and was able to take the set convincingly

Third set saw Hsieh play INCREDIBLE tennis to get up a break. Really couldn't put a foot wrong and was handling the pace and pushing Safina around the court. Safina picked up her leven and broke Hsieh's crappy serve to steam roll her way back into the match. Got up 5-4 playing go for broke tennis but Hsieh survived another game until Safina just went for everything the next to games and it finally worked for her.

Badluck Hsieh, really good and fun player to watch. I personally thought she deserved the match but just getting a bit nervous at the wrong time."

Maybe Su Wei believed the hype and though ' oh well if we are gonna lose to Russia I might as well make everyone proud' - it worked to an extent

Russia
Family challenge with ample excitement

THE last time Russia came to the Hyundai Hopman Cup the team of Nadia Petrova and Dmitry Tursunov left as the champions, so the superstar brother-sister team of Dinara Safina and Marat Safin head to Perth aiming to repeat the effort.

With Russia's tremendous tennis depth, this family pairing looms as one of the most exciting combinations a nation could field an event such as the ITF's mixed teams championship.

At present, Russia has 11 women in the WTA's top 50 and six men in the ATP's top 50 and with Fed Cup victories in 2004, 05, 07 and 08 and the Davis Cup in 2006, the nation can boast plenty of big-time pairings.

Safin has been a tremendous favourite of the Perth crowd on previous visits in 2001, 04 and 05, but he would dearly love to taste more success this time around. His best finish in three appearances was second in his Group at HCXIII, but he arrives as the second seed along with Safina.

Safin's ranking has slipped to 29, but as a former world No. 1 and two-time Grand Slam winner, he is far from past his best at 28 years of age and is capable of beating anyone on his day.

His 'little sister' has enjoyed a remarkable rise up the rankings to No. 3 and was as high as two during 2008. Despite some tremendous results already in her career, at 22 her best is well and truly still in front of her.

Russia had a decade-long absence from the Hopman Cup after competing in early tournaments as the Soviet Union and then CIS, returning in 2001 led by Safin and Elena Likhovtseva.

That team narrowly missed the final, finishing second in their Group and then the Russians again had a break before Safin returned for HCXVI alongside Anastasia Myskina, finishing third in their Group.

Safin and Myskina returned the next year, but things didn’t go quite to plan. Safin was unable to make it in 2006 and Yuri Schukin took his place teaming with Svetlana Kuznetsova, finishing third in their Group.

After not tasting a Hopman Cup victory in four previous attempts, the 2007 challenge proved to be Russia's year with Petrova and Tursunov beating Spain's Anabel Medina Garrigues and Tommy Robredo in the final.

After a year's absence, Safina and Safin will be out to make it two in a row for Russia, but win or lose, the Burswood Dome will be alight whenever the Russians are on court.

A French victory will mean that France, Russia and Italy could all be on two victories by the end of the Round-Robin series and the finalist from Group A will be decided by the calculator.

And for that reason Marat and Dinara have to raise the level of their tennis WAY up to win 3-0. I told ya, 3-0 is like the only outcome that guarantees the final spot...:scared:

Am I the only one, slightly disappointed in all of today's performances? :sobbing:

RUSSIA's brother-sister dream team of Marat Safin and Dinara Safina has survived a strong challenge from Chinese Taipei to win 2-1 and remain unbeaten at the Hyundai Hopman Cup.

Coming off an opening Tie win over Italy, the Russians didn’t have it all their own way against Su-Wei Hsieh and Yen-Hsun Lu, but won both singles matches before losing the mixed doubles in a match tie-break.

However, they will need to back up against the highly-rated French team of Alize Cornet and Gilles Simon on Thursday night to guarantee qualification.

A French victory will mean that France, Russia and Italy could all be on two victories by the end of the Round-Robin series and the finalist from Group A will be decided by the calculator.

World No. 3 Safina began slowly against Hsieh, who made the fourth round of last year's Australian Open, losing the first set 4-6. She fought back strongly taking the second 6-2, but then once again struggled in the third. She battled through to claim it 7-5.

Safin then stepped back onto court to see if he could continue his form from Sunday and while Lu gave him a good fight, Safin prevailed 7-6 (6), 7-5. Chinese Taipei's top-ranked player was serving for the second set, only for Safin to break his serve and win the last three games.

Safin, who has announced that 2009 is his final year on Tour, didn’t find things easy against Lu, but is delighted to begin his Australian summer with two wins.

"He's a very complete player, is very smart, fast and good from all the sides. He seems to read the game well, his anticipation is incredible and it's quite tough to break him," Safin said.

"I didn’t have any expectations coming here because I only had two weeks of practice after not touching a racquet for two months. I didn’t even expect to win a set, so to win two matches is a bonus and it's an impressive performance so far."

Both countries returned for the mixed doubles to make it three straight nights going well beyond midnight, and it went the distance. Russia claimed the first set 6-4, but then lost the second 3-6 and match tie-break 10 points to eight.

Tonight's Session to decide the finalist from their Group will now be sure to showcase some tremendous tennis.

The Russia-France Tie will be on Centre Court, with Italy taking on Chinese Taipei on Court One, but with three teams still in the running it will be a Session worth checking out.

Oh well, it was a good match :) :)

Good to know, so Dinara played amazing :inlove:

Almost everyone said Dinara's match was very entertaining, even Marat said so :

" Well, I get inspired by the girls, with the match before. My sister and her opponent played incredible tennis. I think we both enjoy it here, and we got inspired. We were both looking at the match in the lock room and we were shocked by the level of the tennis from the girls. So we tried to do a little bit better."

I wanna see it :sobbing:
