Hey all
As our off topic/off season thread proved to be soooo popular - I thought it might be worth setting up a proper one for JJ forum posters as the season gets underway!

Basically - if it doesn't fit in any of the other threads (Important or otherwise!) then it can live here!!!

Enjoy!

If JJ wasn't my favourite player, Bartoli would be. Whereas JJ has random events happening to her and is generally thought of as mad (but in a nice way) Bartoli is STRANGE. Very odd.

She does it in last year's JJ-underwear-change vid. It's Marion bouncing past that makes it so priceless!

No, not even a little bit.

- Marion Bartoli on whether she was happy for Rafael Nadal after his Wimbledon victory

That's cold-butted. Apparently, the Frenchie idolizes Roger Federer and actually cried for him after the match.

Marion certainly is a bit of an oddball, what with all her peculiar habits and the things she says, but it's good to have her on the tour. There's just not enough characters around. So many player's interviews sound like they're just regurgitating the many bland things their people have told them to say.

I don't think too many players are all that taken with her though

I sincerely hope so!
I've heard that Novak might be carrying the flag, and no matter how much I like Novak, I think that would be completely ridiculous and unfair, because no one can be compared to Jasna. This is her 6th appereance at the Olympics and she won medals even when all the others failed to. She's a true living legend.

(And Ana? In that case, I'd have to get a gun and shoot a handful of innocent passers-by in the street.)

Oh BTW - here I am at the office (working hard, as you can see) and I've just been skimming through some daily papers we have here and in one of them (''Vecernje novosti'') there's a n entire article on who's prettier - JJ or Ana (:help::cuckoo: you'd think they'd have something more relevant to write about, but obviously that's not the case). It's accompanied by the latest pic of JJ showing us her (very nice) bum in the white bathsuit and some more of Ana, also donning a white bikini). So, they say there was an online (Serbian) poll on who's prettier and whom people like better. Ana won both by receiving 80% of the votes.

People in this country have no taste whatsoever (and I'm not saying this only because they think I dress like a hooker! :rolls:)

More interesting is this quote:

I'm in good form. Me and my coaches decided that I won't play in LA cos it would be too tiring. This season is long and tiring, so I'm focusing on Beijing Olympics.

I think that's been a growing problem for him. These lesser tourneys seem to bring out no fire in him. Not that there was ever much, outwardly, to begin with. It doesn't help that Rafa's improved enough that he can smoke him at RG and beat him at Wimbledon, either. Confidence has to be at an all-time low.

She plays a horrible third set. She grows irritable quickly, Bammer smacks a winner, and then fan yells out ôVamos!ö to the Austrian and Chakvetadze goes right back at the spectator, yelling ôVamos, Vamos, Vamos,ö and then spewing a harsh word at him in Russian. Come on grumpy-ass Dinara!! I want Beeeeeeeeeeeeeeth!! :bounce:

This is from a report in GM:

Mattek vs. Govortsova
OMG, Beth is glorious. First: she was wearing black shorts, which a nearly backless black top (it had an extreme racerback). I was really optimistic about this match because of watching her practice session (see below). But, when Beth started the match she was Tentative Jones. Her timing was all off, her serve was ineffective, and she framed way too many balls. Olga was solid, but that was all she needed to be during those games. Beth got down 2-5, but then she completely turned everything around. In the beginning, she was going for way too much and trying to hit winners that she didn't have, but after that 2-5 changeover she became way more patient, very content to work the points and find her best shot. She basically stopped missing, which frustrated Govortsova so the errors started creeping into her game. Basically what impressed me most today was the mental side of Beth's game. She was not playing at her best. Even when she won 7 games in a row, she was not playing as well as she is capable of, but she turned to a plan B, fought, and got through it. I was also so impressed with her defending. I can't even count how many points she won from a defensive position with a beautiful slice that Olga couldn't really deal with. So, Beth eventually got up 6-5 in the first, at which point Olga took an injury timeout, which... She had the trainer add two pieces of tape to her thigh wrap. Funny how that wasn't bothering her when she was up 5-2. The consultation was basically "Um...my leg is sore"...oh please, whose isn't? I was worried that the lengthy pause would stall Beth's momentum, but she played an excellent game to take the first 7-5. She basically rolled through the second as she kept doing what she was doing and Olga got more and more discouraged. This was the first time I had seen Beth in person since she became good, and just...wow. She is so much fitter, so much more confident and consistent. Barely any resemblance to the player she used to be. So good.

Wow. Someone's on fire!!! :bounce: Fabulous stuff.

I was so impressed with her practice. She was out there hitting FOREVER and was playing so cleanly, confidently, and consistently. Exactly the type of play we saw from her after being down 2-5. She was wearing a white Bebe Sport outfit with gold sparkles. One of the best moments of the day came during Beth's practice. There was an updating scoreboard on her practice court, and she was watching the score for a bit, and when she saw that Chakvetadze was down 4-6 1-2 in her match, she laughed and smiled (I don't want to mischaracterize...but I would describe it as maniacally gleeful. I'm just saying...)

She's crazy, I love her!!! :hearts:

Sampras, Rafter settle off-court feud
August 18, 1999 12:37 PM

Pat Rafter might provide Pete Sampras with the heated rival that the world's No.1 player -- and men's tennis -- sorely needs. But their chilly relationship off the court seems to have thawed.

Earlier this summer, Rafter called Sampras a crybaby and admitted that he "gets an incredible amount of enjoyment from being on top and annoying him."

Angry that their feud was being played out in the press, Sampras asked Rafter to call him.

The Aussie did and, according to Rafter, they had "a great chat."Pat sounds like the bitchy one here, though :o :rolls:

Rafter has the confidence he can repeat, maybe
August 24, 1999

The bat boy left his favorite toys -- scuba gear, golf clubs, even the trusty tennis racquet that helped him win the last two United States Opens -- back home in Bermuda yesterday. Plagued at just the wrong time by chronic tendinitis in his serving shoulder, Patrick Rafter was forced to use his left arm for all his heavy lifting this week.

After jetting to Manhattan for a day trip that fulfilled a commitment to Reebok, the sponsor that dresses him like a surfer, and pleased a few hundred shrieking girls at a Macy's autograph session,

Rafter said he still hoped to raise his racquet next week in time to successfully defend his title.
Aching or not, the upbeat Australian promised he'd be back at Arthur Ashe Stadium, site of his only two Grand Slam championships, to try to become the first man since Ivan Lendl (1985-87) to win three straight Opens.

Will he play? No question. Can he win again? He has his doubts.

"Playing best-of-five sets, it's got to be pretty much 100 percent, or 90 percent anyway,'' Rafter said of his suspect shoulder.

The shoulder also pained him at the start of the 1997 Open. ''But I didn't feel it then after the second week,'' he said. He feels it now, even when he sleeps, but ''even if it's worse than this, I'll be playing the Open: I mean, that's too big a priority for me.''

Along with Rafter's possessiveness about this title, there's the iron man streak of 26 consecutive Grand Slam events that he has been compiling since 1993.

'I'm not about to miss this one,'' said Rafter, who failed to pass the Open's third round on his first four visits to Flushing Meadows. ''It would have been third on my list in terms of Slam expectations. Sort of freaky to have won it.''

Rafter silenced his critics, notably John McEnroe and Pete Sampras, by defying a one-Slam-wonder label and winning the Open a second time last year despite entering it unconvinced of his ability to defend his title.

''Last year, I would have said, 'Please don't put any money on me to repeat; there's no bloody way,' '' he said. ''But this year, I came in thinking I could win it again.''

Though Sampras, a four-time Open champion, and Andre Agassi, who won his only Open in 1994, have put on a summer hardcourts clinic, Rafter can't be counted out.
After a sluggish start in 1999, Rafter reached the Italian Open final on clay and went 10-1 on grass. His semifinal finish at Wimbledon was his best ever, and he proceeded from there to a 10-2 summer hardcourts record that included Australia's dismissal of the United States in the Davis Cup quarterfinals in Boston last month.

But ever since Sampras burned a serve right through his racquet strings during the first-set tie breaker of their Aug. 15 final at Cincinnati, a 7-6 (9-7), 6-3 Sampras victory, Rafter's shoulder hasn't stopped complaining. He tried to play in Indianapolis last week but pulled out after the quarterfinals, then canceled this week's title defense at the Hamlet Cup on Long Island.

Rafter said the week he spent at No. 1 at the end of July made him hunger for more time at the top, a space Sampras has occupied for a record 274 weeks. Rafter also said that knocking Sampras out of last year's Open was among the most satisfying victories of his career, but one he felt Sampras diminished by claiming a hamstring pull.

After sniping at each other in the news media, a feud began last summer when Sampras disparaged Rafter's Grand Slam production after losing to him at Cincinnati. And it escalated to the point where headlines claimed they hated each other.

Then last month, Rafter put in a conciliatory call to Sampras. ''I don't like to be enemies with anyone,'' he explained, adding that he was relieved when Sampras responded in kind. ''I was sitting there sweating bullets that he'd chew my head off.''

Rafter doesn't even hold a grudge against the 130 m.p.h. Sampras serve that hurt his shoulder, shaking it off as an occupational hazard -- one he'd prefer to avoid at the Open. ''Pete's probably the No. 1 guy to beat,'' he said. ''But I'll be one of 128 guys that says he's the one to beat. There are plenty out there to beat.''

And that includes the ponytailed two-time defending champion. ''To defend it, to try to do it three times in a row, that's exciting,'' he said.

yeah - that figures - I don't remember who he was playing now, but I do recall Sampras was trying to appeal to the crowd (by whining "give me a break"... or something)...

Fed can sometimes be like that - he was less than pleased with the hilarious overtures of the Aussies supporting Lleyton at Wimbledon this year... and at times you got this kinda look of "this is MY court... cheer ME"...
But then he just got down to business and did the job..

I think it was different by the time Fed and Rafa got to the final because everyone wanted a worthy final... and that's where Roger loses that sense of disdain and plays awesome tennis... I'm not a huge Fed fan, but I'm glad I got to see him play in commanding form... I'm not a huge Rafa fan but I can't help agreeing it will be a worthy #1...

I don't think we've seen the last of Roger... but he raised the bar of men's tennis for so many years... and now he's been caught up. 'tis the way of things...
God I need to stop trying to write negotiation strategies for touchy clients and go back to reading tech manuals... I've come over all philosohpical...

Edit: oooh didn't see the Pat being the guilty one 'til after I posted!

There’s a Little Tension in Sampras, Rafter Rackets

By Lisa Dillman (http://8.12.42.31/writers/lisa-dillman)
July 09, 2000 (http://8.12.42.31/2000/jul/09/sports)

Pete vs. Andre just wasn’t happening a couple of years ago due to a lack of Andre Agassi.

So, things were getting rather dull in men’s tennis and, well, if Patrick Rafter was willing to take shots at Pete Sampras, the media was willing to make the most of it.

The feud, if you can call it that, lacked the bite of John McEnroe vs. Jimmy Connors. But Rafter and Sampras–who play in today’s men’s final at Wimbledon–had a long stretch of tension, starting in 1997 and running through 1999. Sampras, who has been suffering from an inflamed left shin, will be trying to win his record 13th Grand Slam singles championship, surpassing Roy Emerson.

“We’re not the best of mates,” Rafter said of Sampras after 1997 Davis Cup semifinals. “I wouldn’t go out for a beer with him, put it that way. I don’t know what the story is. There’s a bit of feeling.”

A year later, there was controversy in Cincinnati when Sampras got upset about an overrule against him in the final with Rafter. Uncharacteristically, he lost his temper and later joked, pointedly, about the difference between himself and Rafter, saying: “Ten Grand Slams.”

Rafter made it nine by winning the U.S. Open in 1998, defeating an injured Sampras in the semifinals. In 1999, Rafter became No. 1 and spoke about Sampras.

“He really does say some funny things at the wrong time,” Rafter said then.

“We are out there busting our guts and he doesn’t show a lot of respect at the end of the day.

He tries to play down the reason why he lost, giving no respect to the other player, and that is what really upsets me about him and the reason I try to [anger him] as much as I can.”

This led to headlines in Australian newspapers and Rafter called Sampras a couple of days later and “patched things up.” Sampras said that their relationship is “fine.”

Rafter said he thought former Australian Rules Football player Brett Stephens, who has been Sampras’ trainer, has made a difference.

“I think Brett’s actually helping Pete come out of his shell a little bit and be very open,” Rafter said. “I’ve noticed a change this year. And we’ve actually had a few conversations, because we’ve had our differences.

“I think we’ve had more respect for each other off the court, as well as we obviously have respect for each other on the court. It’s a nice thing to have because we can actually sit down and have a chat. And I quite like the guy.”

Perhaps Sampras and Rafter have more in common than they realized. They both recovered from serious, career-threatening injuries. Sampras hurt his back and withdrew from the U.S. Open last year, and that same night Rafter was forced to retire from his first-round match because of a torn rotator cuff in his right shoulder.

Rafter decided to fly his parents, Jim and Jocelyn, in from Brisbane for the final, a 20-hour-plus journey. They will arrive this morning. Rafter’s father has not seen him play in years.

Sampras also had his parents travel from Los Angeles for the potentially historic occasion. Sam and Georgia Sampras arrived Saturday, and they have never seen their son, a six-time champion, play at Wimbledon.

ampras is 9-4 against Rafter but has won only one of their last four matches. Because of the injury, Sampras has not practiced on off days between matches but finally had a light workout Saturday. He has been receiving painkilling shots before matches, which could be problematic because rain is forecast and there could be several delays today.

Rafter, trying to become the first player to beat Agassi and Sampras in the same Grand Slam tournament, is trying to harness his emotions.

“It would be really easy for me to be right over the top now and just say, ‘I’m so happy, blah, blah, blah,’ ” he said. “But I just want to try and control the emotions and act as if I haven’t been out [injured], and this is just another normal tournament for me. Obviously, this is Wimbledon. It’s going to be different when I walk out.

“I’m going to have to bow. I haven’t done that too many times.”

I missed that match, but I can imagine. Reminds me of Novak in the Aus final, who was shocked to the core that 90% of the crowd was pro-Tsonga!

I think it was different by the time Fed and Rafa got to the final because everyone wanted a worthy final... and that's where Roger loses that sense of disdain and plays awesome tennis... I'm not a huge Fed fan, but I'm glad I got to see him play in commanding form... I'm not a huge Rafa fan but I can't help agreeing it will be a worthy #1...ITA. There is so much respect between Rafa & Roger, which is why as much as I'm sure it pained him to lose that one, it's easier to swallow because it's against Rafa. If Fed ever lost a slam final to Novak, I'm sure he'd be pissed forever more :tape:

I don't think we've seen the last of Roger... but he raised the bar of men's tennis for so many years... and now he's been caught up. 'tis the way of things...Exactly. That's why I was surprised when he said he felt he could go on 'til 35 :o How long do you think Rafa will last? Yeah, and she's only an option (Bammer/Azarenka/razzano). Bammer proved to be useless in Berlin (I think), Razzano is far from convincing, and Azarenka was the only one who had some decent results lately, that's why I thought she might be a good opponent, but I admit I had no idea what kind of game she plays.
Kuzy has probably by now developed suicidal tendencies when she sees Ana, so Dina might be our only hope. Oh, hell...
