Oh boy!! I was gonna start a Marion thread right this second but 'Super M' beat me to it!I've always felt that Flushing Meadows was the DORKIEST name for the site of a sporting event...it sounds more apt for an invitation-only croquet match amongst stuffy, frigid royals who come from has-been world powers.I felt that "Marion Goes Hard-ass On The Hardcourts" had a nice ring to it....Anyhow,it's time for all of us Marionettes to bond together in cheering for our worthy Queen:inlove::inlove::inlove:....I wanna see her winning smile again!!:D:D:D

:inlove:Marion:inlove: 6-1 in 23 minutes with ZERO break points against her serve!! My girlfriend just dumped me as if she were emptying a chemical toilet so I'm ESPECIALLY vulnerable to Marion's tennis valor and charm...VAMOS Marion!!!:)

Well, this might not get reported in the papers, but Akgul made a clumsy pass at Marion during the break following the 1st set.It took Marion a few games to overcome her queasiness at THAT image, and then she re-gained her dominant form.

Next up is an unknown qualifier or Mirza, who won the pair's only previous encounter in the 3rd Round of the 2005 USO.They were ranked 42 and 43 at the time, with Sania one spot higher, and Marion hadn't shown her top-end brilliance yet.Sania has stronger determination than Marion when it comes to filming Clairol commercials whereas Marion is the feistier tennis warrior...here's another match that's do-able.:)

excellent stuff! Didnt expect such a dominating scoreline. I am fully satisfied. Maybe she will feel less pressure now that her wimbledon points have been taken out. I cant say but i like this kind of scoreline! Let's hope for a good tournament so that her ratio in this reason finally becomes positive. Allez!

Put it in perspective:Keothavong has made it past the 2nd Round ONCE in her entire career,at Tier 3...can't believe it's rated THAT high...Kolkata last year.Since she has ZERO shot at winning the tourney, you may as well cheer for Marion.:D

God, what a post! :rolls:

I thought that Marion would either deal with Anne easily or get crushed like against Mattek. Well, a tight three setters is good as well :p! I'm glad that for once she managed to come back, she failed against Casey whereas she had the occasions for example. So it can only be good for her confidence. Now the question is : how can you lose 10 games out of 12 to Anne :help:!!!! She surely played her stupid hard hitting in the middle of the court, I am dying to see her fantastic angles of last year!

That being said, such tactics may be useful against Chakvetadze who is a better player when she has to run from one side to the other.

This time I will wake up to watch the match. Come on Marion, don't lose please! :bounce:

Marion in SF :woohoo:!!!!!! She defeated Anna 63 64!!! God she had to wait to lose Wimbledon's points to finally start playing good tennis!

I really liked her tactics in this match, she tried to not be overagressive and very often let Anna dictate the point which is not the best part of her game. Her serve was flawless in the first set, a bit less in the second . Overall, a very solid performance with some good rallies at times :yeah:.
Marion was so happy at the end and so are we!

SF against evergreen Sugiyama. Marion has never beaten her actually, but she can't lose this time! Things have changed since the last time they played. Allez!

Alizť Molik
Jul 19th, 2008, 03:44 AM
SHE WON!

she was playing so well in the first set had 3-0 and 4-1 leads which is much improved from how she was playing before Wimbledon. She used a lot of angles and set up points and her serve was really working for her to pull Chaky out wide and she was always ready to exploit the open court instead of just hitting it back to her :D I loved the point when she came to the net and slammed that double handed winner back :) and when she was at the net like in the doubles court and she made that angle across court...it was like 07 Marion!!

now she plays Ai and has a real chance for her first tier 2 final!!

It seems like yesterday--2006 in Japan,I think--when Marion finally broke her oh-fer against the gorgeous,modestly-ranked Dushevina. She's only played Sugiyama once in about four years(Zurich 2006 was the last time),so most of the losses are ancient history,career-wise.We've all learned how hard it is to predict Marion's play, but the win over Anna shows that she's capable of beating Top 10 players again!:D We'll see what tomorrow's journey on the :hearts:Marion:hearts: Roller Coaster Ride brings us.;)

Btw,Marionettes,in case our queen advances to the Stanford final---VERY do-able---don't be deceived by the score of Serena's current match.Serena is simply bored and often plays lethargically when she doesn't think her opponent is capable of beating her. She'll almost certainly raise her focus against Marion. This doesn't make it an impossible task(we're not on grass here),it merely heightens the stakes.

This sloppily organized webpage went offline for a few hours....Since then,Serena has retired with a seemingly-legit knee injury that bothered her the whole match, and the sassy Super M is resting up with some beauty sleep:hearts: that'll have her lively enough to follow Marion's match despite the time difference in England.

To answer her question, the USO is located in the NY borough of Queens,so a better name,in MY opinion, would be:Queens' Championship Courts...it might not be EVERYone's favorite but it's a HELLUVA lot less dorky than "Flushing Meadows".

Just for the record, the reproduction of my 'dialogue' with Marion came straight off the top of my head,UNPLANNED,following the match with Keothavong;it was a by-product of :hearts:Bartoli:hearts:-inspired imagination.:)

My thoughts exactly; this is a golden opportunity for her with Serena out. However, she has to get to the final first. Now I know Ai is a good player but Marion should beat her because of Ai's lack of serve and power; I don't really think she has the weapons to beat Marion nowadays.

:woohoo:Got some good details on the match from a reliable source while it was ongoing, and I had a strong hunch that Marion would finally beat Ai when she broke her back for 2-2 in the 1st set and then held easily.Marion only faced ONE break point in her last seven service games...that was in the final one.She quickly put down that threat and then closed Ai out on the third break/match point.Importantly, she never let Ai get to Game Point even when she fought off the first two Match Points.

I'm always SOOOO happy when Marion puts some of her old demons, such as 0-5 vs. Sugiyama, behind her.:D:D:D I know she speaks English and can almost surely read it...do you think she visited our thread and saw my 'love letter' to her?:hearts: It's time for Marion to show her versatility by milking a Canadian cow tomorrow.Vamos,Marion!:inlove::inlove::inlove:

Marion :worship:! Finally, finally the blue sky & the sun appeared in this season. So happy for her, this is the best way to start this US campaign. As always, Marion finds her real tennis later in the year :D.

Looking at the match, we can say that she can really rely on this great serve, it's real weapon now that gives her free points. This run is a reward for all her efforts to overcome this terrible start of season. The only thing which is a bit worse than last year is her defense that delivers too many shorts balls, but on the other side, those shots down the line are splendid :hearts:.

So now we can say : FIRST FINAL SINCE WIMBLEDON IN A TIER II TOURNAMENT!!! COME ON! Our Marion is back, my friends! :woohoo:

Ola won 75 63. Played her best tennis in this final, Marion was not inspired enough -no variations in her zones-, the serve was a bit off and Wozniak had a couple of lucky shots that disgusted Marion especially when she was serving for the set at 54.
What I dislike is her lack of fighting spirit in the second set. Apart of this, I'm very happy of this week.

Still a negative ratio this season but it shouldn't last for too long. Marion:hug:

Well,I'm gonna keep the promise I made to myself to avoid using the most vulgar profanity(Spanish,English,OR French).Marion simply can NOT expect to maintain a high ranking by losing to the sorry,third-rate Wozniaks of the world. What?Did she bribe Marion by offering her one of the 8 or 9 cakes that her fat ass was planning to eat tonight?

A cynic might say that a healthy Serena would've double-bageled Lard-Ass in the semis(probably so),and then she would've beaten Marion in the final anyway...but I'm just grasping at anything right now.:( Losing decisively to this low-talented,Canadian parade float seems to undo ANY progress that Marion was making, and I don't know HOW she can build on this:confused::confused::confused:...I practically never get drunk on Sunday but maybe it's time to break that trend:rolleyes:

I think Marion needs to get a real coach. Seriously, Walter seems like a nice man who loves his daughter alot but he isn't helping her ridiculous.
Telling her to put the weight on to get more power in her shots is just ridiculous. It saddens me that Marion isn't fulfiling her potential. She has the game to win Tier 1 and 2 titles and be a solid top 10 player but not the body. Playing all those matches in a row takes its toll on her; today she was limping really badly. And this isn't the first time this has happened. Like, I truly thought she was going to win Paris indoors earlier on this year but she injured her back in the second set of her semi against Anna C and lost something like 10 games in a row. If she was fit that wouldn't be happening. Experts like Navratilova have also said the exact same thing about her but she just won't listen to the good advice that could take her to new heights. Plus, if she were to get her body into shape she would be a much better mover and defender and therefore wouldn't have any major weaknesses in her game.
Still, it seems like she's getting her year back on a track. A tier 2 final is pretty good (though I can't overlook the fact it was very, very winnable).

Yes on the basis of the past months head to heads, then it is a decent draw. But in my view its more about the fact Marion is a decent player than about it being a decent draw. She could perform to the same standard in any of the other three sections.

I saw the end of third set, Marion wasn't moving so well again, a bit too slow but her strokes her good. She changed her serve motion again adding some ballerina position before throwing the ball . It worked well today, 71% of first serves, 11 aces, got broken only twice.

Next : Kleybanova/Rolle.

Well done Marion. :D Perhaps she shouldn't have lost a set, but 6-0 in the third is a good way to recover. :)

Marion is in the 3rd round already, she advanced on Alisa's withdrawal due to a lower back injury. I hope the Russian player is fine. That's good for Marion since even her wasn't feeling so great the last time she was on the court (dizziness). So it should enable her to recover more and get ready for a new fight against Chakvetadze.

Allez Marion :D!

Yeh it's a shame for Kleybanova. No on e likes it when that happens to a player. It is awkward for everyone.

Alisa is quite hefty though and hits the ball hard so one can understand how it would be possible for her to get that kind of injury.

The most important thing for us is that Marion is feeling well and ready to lay into Chakky.

Match stopped because of rain at 64 54 40/40 for Chakvetadze. Marion had 2 Bps in this game, Anna one MP.
Marion overall wasted so many occasions and her serve has been off. Let's hope she can give herself the chance of playing a bit more, allez!

I know. What's going on with her serve? It was so good against South. When she's injured she just spins them in. I don't know if she's injured or sick but I think that's whats going on here.

Marion won 46 75 76(4) :woohoo:.

Incredible match, such a weird one . Marion saved one more MP at 64 54, BPs at 5/5 and eventually closed the set. Then I thought 'ok it should be quick now' but Marion choked a 53 lead in the third having double match point on serve. She also had 2 more on Anna's serve... She saved BPs at 55 and finally came back from 0/2 in the tie-break! Anna made a DF at 4/5 and Marion knew she couldn't lose to her !

I'm so proud of Marion, first time this year she wins a match recovering from a 1st set deficit. Saved MPs. A second top 10 win. A QF in Tier I. And finally the end of her negative ratio!
Marion will play Ai again. This time odds are in favour of the Japonese since she had a free day to rest, Marion will surely be tired but I'm sure she will give it all. This is a huge opportunity...

Allez Marion:hearts: !!!!!!!!!

I also wanted to say that I'm leaving in holidays tomorrow, so I wish everybody to have nice time! Cheer for Marion for me! ;)

Though I'm estatic she won, I'm worried about Marion's serve. The stats shown that is really off today, wheras it was brilliant against South. She'll need to serve better against Ai (who, by the way, has played a doubles match so hasn't had a full day of rest.) but I think she can win and get to her first tier 1 semi.
Have a good time on your holidays Iceland :)

Now she's 3-1 against Chakvetadze!
Anyway, since Eastbourne Marion seems to find her range a little more. Go, beat and Sugiyama again to make the SF! :bounce:
What I love most about Marion is how she strikes the ball in such a clean way, her swings seem to be so natural even though she's two-handed.
In my opinion she has the best hands in women's tennis concerning ball control and accuracy. It's such a pleasure to watch her play! :bounce:

Mad in the sense that Sugi and Chakky blew up against Marion. That could be interpreted in a couple ways:Are you saying that both losers lost their temper with Marion and,if so,what were their justifications? From Chalky this is no big surprise, but I'd never heard of Sugiyama being the hot-tempered type...the Japanese aren't exactly known for being wild and crazy.

Chakky.. well she famously shouted at the ballbloy on Thursday.Awwww, what a shame;so you're telling me that Sugiyama is having some sort of mid-life crisis.:sad:Perhaps it would encourage Ai if I told her that losing to Marion didn't cost her very much.As she hasn't won a tourney since 2004,and NEVER a Tier 1,she had as much chance of winning Montreal as YOU do. Do you think THAT would make her feel better?

Were you able to make out in which language Chalky used when shouting at the ballboy...or what she said? She may have thought it was okay to bitch and moan in English---forgetting that the Quebecois are SUPER protective of their Francophone culture....hmmmmm....I might just help Anna with the native tongue in Montreal by reading her some French poetry:devil:

Maybe I'm just blinded by love, but I really believe that Marion would've pulled this off had it not been for the two rain delays.Marion tends to be SUCH a streaky player;having her rhythm thrown off against a pesky type such as Cibulkova is a tough blow to fight back from.Even so,I have some genuine optimism now that she's on the right track somewhat. We'll have to see how far she can take this recent improvement while not ignoring the likelihood that she must change her arrangement with dad a little.

In the spirit of fairness,my hats off to Cibulkova who earned this win fair and square....I just wish she could've earned it in Stockholm instead of Montreal. :hearts:Marion:hearts:,mon cherie, allez!!!:)

I only saw the first set and a bit... did Marion keep hitting those crazy moonballs all match? It was so strange in the first set, everytime Marion hit one, she won the point I think? Cibulkova was like "oh I'll just let all these balls bounce really high and set you up to hit a big winner" I guess it was giving her so much difficulty because Cibulkova is so tiny, but I'm hoping Marion didn't keep doing it the whole match, hence losing when her opponent figured out how to deal with it?

 So sad that Marion didn't get to the final. I love her new service motion though. :inlove: The commentators kept saying how awkward it looks, but I think she looks very graceful in the ballet stance.

bruce goose
Aug 8th, 2008, 11:53 AM
Anyone know why she's not playing the Olympics?A while back someone posted something to the effect that Marion withdrew from consideration because she wouldn't comply with France's strict specifications regarding coaching.Basically, her dad would be allowed zero role if she went to the Olympics where she could only be coached by 'so-and-so' who had been approved by the French Olympic Committee.

That may not be the absolutely clearest possible explanation but you can infer the meaning OK.Personally,I would't blame Marion for NOT feeling patriotic in light of the snotty-ass attitude that the French Federation and other higher-ranked players have shown:rolleyes:.......Maybe the Gringos should've let the Germans conquer that country after all.:(

Anyone know why she's not playing the Olympics?I already answered to this question in Western & Southern Financial Group Women’s Open thread :

In order to be clear, she disagrees with training methods of French team (too many training matchs). So, she prefers stay on her own with her father. And that is why she refused to join French team in China in the beginning of 2008. Due to ITF rules, she is not eligible fot OG.

It explains why she has made an early commitment to the 2008 Western & Southern Financial Group Women’s Open.

In fact, her last goal is to play OG in Wimbledon 2012.

Marion's Interview in French (translation in english here : http://marionbartoli.blog.co.uk/)

Sorry for my bad, wrong explanation,Marionettes:eek:It is not a patriotic problem even she's Corsican. She just wants to be trained by her father and not by Goven. Perhaps it is not true but she considers that he'll ask her to play too many training matchs. She's scared to be too tired before official matchs.

In fact, she plays very few training matchs (last one is on youtube vs Svet in Eastbourne '08). Someone I know was in Eastbourne to see Amélie and told me that Svet crushed Marion). Marion reached semi final when Svet lost very early.

News wires had written Marion off by the end of the set. Hence the lack of photos from AP and Getty. How silly of them. Didnt they learn anything from the Keothavong match? Or MP down against the Chak? Bartoli is a FIGHTER.

The surface suits Marion better this time Bruce Goose. Faster. Not as high a ball bounce. Ideal for Marion...... Unless she's in a playful moonball mood again, like against Domi in the first set. hehe

Sigh. I dunno guys. Another very disheartening scoreline. I'm really concerned looking at her winning percentage behind her first serve. It's very inconsistent. In Stanford she was serving very well and getting lots of cheap points behind her first serve. But today :tape:...
I'm hopeful that maybe she kinda tanked a bit to prepare for the US open, where, sadly, she doesn't have the best of draws (Davenport in the 3rd round ). We'll just have to wait and see how she plays, but I'm confident she can atleast get to the 3rd round.

Wow Marion :help:. She just has no idea on how to play Caroline!

Well it seems that Marion still struggle with consistency, Caroline is no threat when a hard hitter can cut down on the UE level. It's precisely this point that puts her in jeopardy each time. Caro also has a high first serve percentage, even though her serve is slower than most girls of top 30, it has to bother Marion since she loves killing 2nd serves.

I'm not too disappointed by this loss, Caroline is a top 20 girl now, although I'm still a bit sceptical, she is somebody hard to play. At least for Marion ^^. As C. W. Fields said, more time to prepare US Open. Marion didn't seem affected by this disappointing performance, she even praised Caro's talent.

WOW!!! Caro lost the 1st set in the Pilot Pen final, and then she came back and pretty much steam-cleaned Chalky in the 3rd set after a tighter 2nd.This is made even more impressive because Anna HAD been 7-0 in career finals.Caro also won her previous WTA event in Stokholm and was only knocked out of the Olympics by an amazing Dementieva who took her play to another level.

I'm reaching for excuses,of course, but this mitigates Marion's loss somewhat as Caro has been in dominant form of late.I REALLY believe, too, that she can handle Lindsay at the USO if she moves her side-to-side a lot.I DON'T think that Round-of-16 is too much to expect of Marion:hearts:

ANYWAYS.... back to tennis. It's Wozniak the Canadian Bruce, not Wozniaki. Lindsay hasnt played a tournament in months. So If she's not a 100% it'll show in the first round. Both of them have beaten Marion recently but the Canadian cow will be MUCH easier to beat if Marion plays her game.Lindsay is unlikely to be "100%" even if she doesn't have a specific injury.Tall, bulkier women simply don't age well athletically and are prone to stiffness and other troublesome aches and pains whenever they see lots of activities.Marion should DEFINITELY be setting the Fourth Round as a goal of hers....Now she must simply meet her potential with effort.

Marion into the second round with an easy 6-2 6-3 victory.

Served very well today (3 aces and lots of big first serves) and hardly made any errors (6 in the 1st set, 3 in the 3rd) ,and she hit 14 winners.

One thing that was poor though was her second-serve returning in the 2nd set.

Point of the match was the 2nd point. Voskoebeva looked to be in control throughout untill Marion hit an amazing defensive lob which enabled her to end the point at the net.

Marion SHOULD have a big quickness and stamina edge on Lindsay, and she ought to wear her down by forcing lots of lateral movement.Five more wins and I fly to the UK to find myself a Scottish lass for some:kiss::kiss::kiss::woohoo:

Salitirist is I guess a personal pronoun for those who parade the saltire.Well,I searched the expanded dictionary and there was no listing at all for 'saltire'....maybe you're referring to 'salt tires' that you use on snowy roads??

Anyhow, get some rest if possible,Sugar Buns:hug:;we all want you 100% for the Marion-beats-Lindsay celebration:)

Okay It's been a good tournament so far. I don't expect her to win against Lindsay but I wouldn't be surprised if she did. Lindsay is hitting really clean, it's hard to outpower her. Marion needs to move her side to side and expose her lack of movement. Hopefully Lindsay doesn't do the same to Marion.

Nice new avatar Super Marion, our princess is truely a star :hearts:!!

Good to see Marion in the 3rd round, it was really expected after her great Summer but it is very reassuring that she has not lost a set yet :yeah: She could have certainly done better against Ruano, lets say that she is keeping her best for Davenport, hehe!!

Marion wasnt really expecting Lindsay to play that well from what I read in some interviews, its true that Lindsay is worth so much better than her current rank. It should make a great match at any rate, I soooooo want Marion to win!!! Lets go for a revenge!!!!!

Bruce Goose, ask any Scottish member of Tennis Forum what a Saltire is, Most English members should know too. And it’s a noun in very common usage too. For example I heard it all the time on BBC’c Olympic coverage. But I bet as usual you know all this and are just getting me to bite bite bite and BITE AGAIN!!! Gawd I so wish you where Lindsay Davenport right now I’d bite your arse off!!!

Here you go. FIRST entry on Google; http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Saltire

SECOND entry on Google; http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Flag_of_Scotland

I consider Andy Murray a saltirist.

Wozniak did that against Serena at Stanford and fluked a win over Serenaís with a dodgy knee. But Lindsay knee must be better cos she dumped Wozniak in two in the first round. But getting Lindsay moving to the corners and the net has got to play an important role, otherwise Lindsay will just bat her off the court. Lindsay doesnt want a workout. She just wants to get through the sardine rounds in two with big serves.

Lindsay is getting to that point in the tourney where her stamina tends to dip so I hope that this trend continues. She's had her moments of glory and it's :hearts:Marion's:hearts: turn.

Im starting to feel a bit nervous about today's match, if Lindsay is in a good day, it might be extremely hard. Marion will have to variate her zones of play, being aggressive in the center of the court wont be enough indeed. Serve will be important too...
Marion can do it, allez!

She has to play to her strength's firstly, like her returning, and also mix it up, and get Lindsay moving.

It's natural to be nrevous Iceland, I am too. It's Marion's biggest match since since US Open last year.
