With all that's gone on this year, there are a LOT of interesting story lines that are taking shape for the next 5-6 years. Some interesting questions that have arisen:

- Can Serena win the Double Slam ( winning each major title 2 times)?
- Can Venus win a slam in the first 1/2 of the year?
- Can Venus surpass Martina's record of 9 Wimbledon titles?
- Can Maria win the Career Grand/Golden Slam?
- Can J/Elena win a major?
- Can China produce a major champion?

Can any/all of these happen?
(vote for all of those you think can/will happen)

In my humble opinion...

- Can Serena win the Double Slam ( winning each major title 2 times)? No, I don't think she'll ever win the French again.
- Can Venus win a slam in the first 1/2 of the year? Possibly, but I doubt it.
- Can Venus surpass Martina's record of 9 Wimbledon titles? No, I don't think so. She'll need to win it 3 more times, which I don't see happening. (1 or maybe 2 more could happen)
- Can Maria win the Career Grand/Golden Slam? No
- Can J/Elena win a major? Yes and yes
- Can China produce a major champion? Don't see why not.

You should have organized this multiple poll differently. As it is, there is no difference between not voting, and voting by providing answer NO to any of the polled questions.

You should have given for each question more than one answer option.

I think Maria can win the French if she improves on the clay.

Hopefully Jelena will win a slam. Sure she will soon.

- Can Venus win a slam in the first 1/2 of the year? Yes.
- Can Venus surpass Martina's record of 9 Wimbledon titles? Not likely
- Can Maria win the Career Grand/Golden Slam? Lol - can't see this happening
- Can JJ win a major? Yes - may be even a few
- Can Elena win a major? Tough question - it is possible, but I think it would be a case of a lucky draw towards the finals.
- Can China produce a major champion? Would like to think so, but don't foresee it happening in the near future.

- Can Serena win the Double Slam ( winning each major title 2 times)? Hmmm, no I don't think she can.
- Can Venus win a slam in the first 1/2 of the year? Yes, she should have done it already this year. Melbourne should have belonged to her.
- Can Venus surpass Martina's record of 9 Wimbledon titles? No, she won't win five more Wimbledons, her body will start to break down.
- Can Maria win the Career Grand/Golden Slam? Yes, definitely. Especially as the clay-court specialist dies.
- Can J/Elena win a major? Jelena, yes. Elena, no.
- Can China produce a major champion? Definitely not. Three years ago I would have said yes yes yes, but a certain double-handed headcase decided not to work hard to pursue her talent and now struggles to win matches.

- Can Serena win the Double Slam ( winning each major title 2 times)? With Henin gone anyone can win in Paris. But Serena really disappointed this year so I think she'll be even more determined in 2009.
- Can Venus win a slam in the first 1/2 of the year? Don't see it happening. There will always be someone to catch her out in Australia, and there's always a better claycourter in France.
- Can Venus surpass Martina's record of 9 Wimbledon titles? Certainly possible the way she's going but I don't see her winning it another five times.
- Can Maria win the Career Grand/Golden Slam? :spit:
- Can J/Elena win a major? They both have good shots. Jelena needs to stop getting injured in semis. Elena's performances this year at slams has restored my faith that she can win one. She had a huge chance in Paris and let it go but bounced back to make SF at Wimbledon.
- Can China produce a major champion? Zheng, Li, Yan etc. will not win singles slams, but in the future? why not.

- Can Serena win the Double Slam? Not sure what the question means. I don't think she can do a Serena Slam or Calendar Grand Slam. I also don't think she'll win the French again. So NO
- Can Venus win a slam in the first 1/2 of the year? There's no reason why she can't win the Australian Open. I think she will target that next. So YES
- Can Venus surpass Martina's record of 9 Wimbledon titles? Win another five? Still be winning at a minimum of age 33? I think she will do well to win 2-3 more. She can pass Steffi at best, but I doubt she'll draw equal with Martina. So NO. As an aside, had Steffi won in 1999, I think she may have played on for 1-2 years as she would have been on 8 Wimbledons and would have liked to at least equal Martina to put her firmly at No.1 all-time singles player.
- Can Maria win the Career Grand/Golden Slam? You mean, can she win the French Open and the Olympics? I think she can win either the 2008 or 2012 Olympics, and she can win the French. After all, Capriati, Serena, and Mary Pierce won it. The game on clay has changed. There are few good specialists out there, with everyone virtually playing power-hard-court style tennis on the clay. Maria is not that bad in terms of movement. So, YES.
- Can Jelena Jankovic win a major? She has the game, definitely, and she's still young. I think her mental side will improve with more experience. The risk is that I don't she'll have a long career, due to overplaying burn out injuries, so if she hasn't done it by the end of 2009, I'm not sure she will. I'll say YES though.
- Can Elena Dementieva win a major? I think her time has been and gone. She's playing better this year than ever before and her serve has improved, but I still don't think she's quite got the self-belief to win on the biggest of occasions against top opponents. The top girls know how to play her and know that she's a bit set in her ways game-wise. And mentally she still has meltdowns. So, NO.
- Can China produce a major champion? I have never been impressed to any major extent by the players that have come out of Asia in the last 10 years. They all play very similarly and it is manufactured for hard courts and fast indoor surfaces. I think this type of game rules them out of all Slams except the US Open and, to a lesser extent, Wimbledon, yet I can't see a Chinese woman winning either of these titles. Until the tour develops a proper Asian series of tournaments with quality draws, I think the ability of Chinese girls to make it big on tour is limited. They are always playing far from home and i think it is harder for them to be on the tour. So, NO, not in the next 5 or 6 years, but maybe within 15 years.

Can Serena win a career double slam? It's possible, but she'll probably never win the FO again.
Can Venus win Australian Open/French Open? She may win the AO, but she'll never win the FO.
Can Venus surpass Martina's record of 9 Wimbledon titles? No way in hell. She may win one or two more Wimbledon's, but she definitely won't win 5 more.
Can Sharapova win a career slam? Yes, and there's at least a 50/50 chance that she will.
Can Jankovic win a major? She can and most likely will.
Can Dementieva win a major? No. In fact, I'm still amazed that she made it to 2 finals.
Can a Chinese woman win a major? Not only can this happen, but it's probably inevitable.

With likelihood out of 10:
Can Serena win a career double slam? 4/10.
She's more likely to win another A.O or U.S.O/Wimby than RG.

Can Venus win A.O/RG? 3/10.
I'd love it to happen but she always seems to start the year slowly, better chances at the A.O. She has not been to the SF of A.O and RG for 5 years..

Can Venus surpass Navratilova's 9 Wimbledons? 2/10.
She's 28. Winning 5 more Wimbledons would be a tall order at this stage of her career. I think she could win max 3 more. But if she stays healthy and motivated, who knows? Getting closer to the record could spur her on...It would be unbelievable if she did it!

Can Sharapova win a career slam? 5/10.
With Henin out of the picture, RG looks a real possibility for Sharapova and everyone else.

Can Jankovic win a major? 7/10.
I think she has a great chance of doing this in the next few years.

Can Elena win a major? 1/10.
Sadly, I think her best chance has passed.

Can a Chinese woman win a major? 4/10.
I think they give too much away in terms of size and will ultimately be edged out by the bigger girls.

- Can Serena win the Double Slam ( winning each major title 2 times)?
Yes and no. Depends which Serena? shows up. Needs to avoid the upset. I will say no.
- Can Venus win a slam in the first 1/2 of the year?
Yes. Melbourne.
- Can Venus surpass Martina's record of 9 Wimbledon titles?
No. That would mean winning all 4 Wimbledons now until 2012. I wouldn't bet on it -- or against it.
- Can Maria win the Career Grand/Golden Slam?
No. Can't win the French. Time and time again, no one will listen to me. But anyone with a decent amount of spin will defeat Maria. Mattek and Rodina took sets off Sharapova. Doesn't that show something?
- Can J/Elena win a major?
Jelena will eventually. Don't see her winning more than one.
- Can China produce a major champion?
No.

- Can Serena win the Double Slam ( winning each major title 2 times)?
You never really know with Reeree
- Can Venus win a slam in the first 1/2 of the year?
I doubt it. She always physically peaks in summer. Winning in the first half would prolly make her underfperform in the second half and I'm not sure she's willing to sacrify W and USO
- Can Venus surpass Martina's record of 9 Wimbledon titles?
No. But I think she'll eaqual Steffi and that's already awesome!
- Can Maria win the Career Grand/Golden Slam?
If she doesn't get the gold medal this year, no way in hell.
- Can J/Elena win a major?
Jelena yes. Elena no, no, no.
- Can China produce a major champion?
Obviously.

lol i kept thinking wtf?! Serena has already won the doubles slam w/ Venus.

But can Serena win the FO again?? Maybe-yes. If she can get a little faster, and a little more aggressive off the ground she def. can. She just needs to be confident in her shots/game and in her movement. Her serve works well on clay cuz she mixes it up and has that nice kick (unlike say Venus whose serve isn't as effective on clay). I say if Serena gets fitter she can def. win the FO.

Venus win FO/AO? maybe-no. FO highly doubtful even though I would think w/ her great movement she could but she'd have to change the way she usually plays and be fitter/stronger to do so. She could win the AO if she could get a better start to the year

Maria Career slam? - Olympics- def. yes. she has a great shot this year. FO-? Maybe, and that's a big maybe but w/ no really dominant or great clay players she has her chances if the draw breaks her way.

Venus surpass Martina?? prolly not. time is not on Venus' side

Jelena win a major? prolly yes. She has that sort of game that she can be right there to win a major if the top players falter.

Dementieva win a major? Maybe-yes. She's got the game but at Wimbledon she was desperate to win that match and it showed. She needs to be mentally tougher

China produce a major champion? yes. just a matter of time.

fair point, but i'm looking at maria as someone who's game on clay can develop a lot further in the coming 5+ years whereas i don't think Serena has perhaps 2-3 more shots at the title left. i also think winning RG is a big motivation for maria to improve her clay game and particularly her movement on clay, whereas Serena has already won it so i don't think this will be a big focus tournament for her.

- Can Serena win the Double Slam ( winning each major title 2 times)? Not in the same year no. But she can possibly win the french again which would give her at least two titles at each slam.
- Can Venus win a slam in the first 1/2 of the year? Yes she can win AO.
- Can Venus surpass Martina's record of 9 Wimbledon titles? No
- Can Maria win the Career Grand/Golden Slam? Yes
- Can J/Elena win a major? Elena-Not a chance in hell. There is a better chance of Bartoli waking up a size 2.
Jelena-not likely.
- Can China produce a major champion? Not sure about future players but none of their current players will win a slam.

i don't get the logic of saying maria can definitely win on clay but saying serena can't, when one already has won and one still hasn't...especially given the reasoning you gave for both

maria is younger and once the older generation has retired she wont nearly face the level of competetion that serena faced. she wont have to beat clijsters, henin, pierce, hingis, venus or serena to win a french open title. instead she may have to beat ivanovic, kuznetsova jankovic or vaidisova on clay which is doable especially if she plays fr at least another 5 or 6 years and considering the fact that a lot of her generation are mental midgets 9 and you dont always outgrow that.
