Venus Williams has revealed she would love to match Martina Navratilova's record of nine Wimbledon titles after her fifth triumph on Centre Court.

Williams defeated younger sister Serena 7-5 6-4 in Saturday's final, recovering from a break down in each set to successfully defend her title.

Asked about matching Navratilova, who watched the final on Centre Court, Williams said: "Oh my God. That would be the ultimate. That's not easy. Her career spanned like three decades, so I'm not sure if I have that much time. If I did, I think I would definitely dream of that."

An all-Williams final was a common occurrence when the pair first began to dominate; they contested five of the six grand slam finals between the 2002 French Open and Wimbledon in 2003, but that was the last time until Saturday they had met at such a stage.

The feeling persists that the siblings could achieve such dominance again if they were not distracted by their off-court activities, and Venus was at least making all the right noises.

"I would love that," she added.

"The main goal for both of us is to stay healthy. We've both worked really hard this year and I think the results showed here, both in the singles and the doubles (which the sisters won for the third time just hours after the singles final)."

It's not her "ultimate dream".

It is a dream of hers.
It is an ultimate accomplishment.

The world should all unite against Venus Williams. She MUST be stopped, whatever it takes.

Pretty humble statement from Venus considering it took only 12 years for Martina to win all those titles and not 3 decades.

Martina proved you can win big matches after 30 and there is no reason why we can't see Venus do this as well.

I think Venus would like to match her total titles at Wimbledon, not just singles. Navratilova's doubles career at Wimbledon was longer. She won her first doubles title at Wimbledon in 1976 (WD) and her last in 2003 (MD). That statement plays into my hope the Venus might play a light doubles schedule for a year or two after she retires from singles. She needs to win the mixed doubles at some point.

She needs to get the Career Mixed Grand Slam, not just Wimbledon, she's half way there:lol:;)

another evidence to prove that wimby is the most prestiguous tennis tourney, see the great Venus also wants to win more instead of FO who she has yet to win :wavey:

As Martina's biggest fan, I hope this never happens. Im sooooo protective of Martina's wimbledon records lol. I even forced myself to cheer for Rafa so Roger wouldnt equal her 6 consecutive wimbledons lol!

But I do have to say, if the 9 wimbledons record is to be equalled or surpassed by anyone, I would like it to be either Venus or Serena, Id actually prefer Serena to beat it. For me, the Williams represent the next big jump in standard, quality, athelitcism etc the game has seen since Martina, so it would only be fitting...

Great point Miranda my old friend :) Which is why all the talk these days of the Aus Open being as prestigious as Wimbledon is crap! Ask all the players and 7 or 8 out of 10 will admit Wimbledon is the biggest prize in tennis.. Making Martina's 9 wimbledons all the more impressive because its the one everyone wants to win that little bit more than the other slams..

Yes it makes total sense for Venus to aim at Martina's record, now she has won five, especially as she has no real rival on grass these days, it seems.

But please, can we just discuss things without stooping to this pathetic level? (see below)

It could happen but it wont be easy. Venus will have to win the next five Wimbledon's in a row - she'll be what, 33 then. Anything is possible and she is the best Wimbledon player of all active players. I hope she can do it.

It's good that Venus has aims like this, but remember she's only half way there. Someone could come from nowhere on grass in the next few years.

That would be beyond great if Venus could do that. I have learned by now to expect the unexpected where Venus is concerned. I think she will definitely equal Steffi´s record of seven Wimby´s and maybe even surpass it.
