Realistically, Serena, Venus, Ana, Maria, Jelena will be winning Slams in the next 2-3 years. With WS and Sharapova retirement there will be a room for Radwanska and today's juniors.
Safina could sneak a Roland Garros title.

I agree with this and with your previous post.

I have a strong feeling that Maria already has an exit strategy but for understandable reasons shee keeps it to herself and members of her closest family.

The amount of money she is already making outside of tennis from her celebrity status combined with how much effort she needs to put in order to be competitive on the WTA tour at the highest level, make her early retirement a distinct possibility.

I truly believe she will be done with tennis by 25.I have a strong feeling that Maria already has an exit strategy but for understandable reasons shee keeps it to herself and members of her closest family.I truly belive that Maria is honnest when give that statement about retirement at 25 and she is probably already at 21 litle bit tired... but i'm pretty sure that this will never happen (except if she marry some billionere before 26, which is actualy not so unrealistic scenario ;))! She is in the midle of "Maria Sharapova" industry and no chance that her (un)expected decision to retire at 25 or "exit strategy" Larry Scott (or somebody important from IMG or Nike or...) will comment just with "We Won't Lose sleep over it" like in Henin (or Kim) case. Maria is not just sports star - she is some kind of "modern icon" so too many things will "encourage" her to play tennis as long as possible (even more!). Like Jordans comeback at 40 or Andre Agassi (which is not big champion like Sampras, but bigger "icon") plays after 35 or David Beckham is still playing and is big star despite fact that his body already two years ago is not ready for full season champions league + strong league shedule. BTW I think that thanks to USA tennis disaster sisters not retire "at25" after painful 2006 season (and Lindsay like 32 old mother is still in business) - because even in slump and with bad results and injuries all kind of pressures to still stay is so strong (Seles or Capriati will comeback for sure at 30 if their injuries is not so damn bad). I personaly hope with time that Ana will be in similar "nobody wants you to retire" position... i will not complain if she will plays couple seasons more than she planned .

There is one but, and unfortunately a very serious but. In order for her to be 'helpful' for WTA she must keep winning at the highest level. And the cost of preparing herself for that is getting higher and higher for her with every passing day.

She already earned enormous amount of money, and I am pretty sure tempting prospects to continue earning good money without all that sweat and effort are already eroding her motivation.

Kim was weak lets be honest. Lindsay like you said made many finals but she had much better players at her time. You cant compare her loses to Venus 3x, and Serena 1x with the current players around right now. Ana is one of the better clay court players right now which is sorta sad. I can see her winning the French around 2 more times before she retires.

I think Serena and Venus will each get two more. In about two or three years, we'll see Kuznetsova emerge as a dominant player for a bit. Sharapova will remain on her current pace for slams, winning the hard court slams when healthy, but not always, and not always healthy. Ivanovic will struggle with the pressure and be a top 5er for most of her career, but struggle to win slams left and right. Radwanska will emerge as the best of the teenagers, and Safina will nab a French title sometime in her career. The other three aren't going to get any better, and their opponents aren't going to get any worse.

Nice to see some people still have reason.

There are so many factors involved. I would feel foolish if I thought I was equipped to give an informed opinion.

Answers to such polls are usually no more than reflections of our emotions: 'I like this one, dislike that one'.

1 Ana Ivanovic- 4 or 5, I think maybe two more french opens and an aussie or US open.
2 Jelena Jankovic- 0 unfortunately, hopefully at least one.
3 Maria Sharapova - 6, I think she can win wimbledon again and at least one US or AO again.
4 Svetlana Kuznetsova- 1, I just don't think she can hold it together in the later rounds of a Slam anymore.
5 Serena Williams- 10, she has another two slams in her IMO before she retires.
6 Elena Dementieva- 0, this French Open was her last best chance I think.
7 Venus Williams- 8, I think someone will stop her at Wimbledon eventually and I think she'll retire before Serena.
8 Anna Tchakvetadze- 0, no chance IMO unless she turns her attitude around.
9 Dinara Safina- 0, I can't even think of Safina as a Slam Champ.
10 Agnieszka Radwanska - This one's tough, I think Agi has a French or Australian title in her when she matures her game.

I think my estimates could be way off, but with some of them I'm pretty sure I'm bang on.

So give me just one example from any sport when some "modern icon" retire young??? I not say great(est) champions or sports big (super)stars... i'm talking about "modern icons" status which is actualy more connected with business/industry than with sport (like fact that Beckham is for sure not biggest soccer player of last decade, but biggest star in terms of business for sure). I agree that She already earned enormous amount of money like you says, but only because everybody else around her (Maria's and WTA's sponsors) earned much more money b/c her phenom... and they want to continue with that for sure. And you are wrong that with "icon" status she needs to winning all the way and all the time - Henin needs that (she is "great champion", not "modern icon", and champions must to win all the time or they is not champions anymore). Even now when expectations of Pova results is highest - one slam at every two seasons is more than enough for her current status. Actualy from Kournikova example (or Agassi final two seasons) we know that even TOP15 is enough to be in centre of public attention (and Kournikova never be so serious "business project" like Maria). Also dont forget that tennis players like to play tennis, and that is their profession which they do best... so if whole world will try to help you to not give-up Maria's decision to retire at 25 will not be so easy like in Henin or Clijsters cases. That's why for example some "icons" like Jordan or Schumacher is still in theirs sports at 40, atleast 5 years after they first time seriously thinking to retire. And BTW after 2009 WTA shedule reform (which is i'm very big suporter) just 10 tournaments per season will be enough for TOP players so injuries dont be so big problem for TOP10 WTA like in past decade.

So i think that Maria will play more than 30 new slams in future, not less than 20 like people (including Maria herself) thinking. At 25 i see her to carry Russian flag at London 2012 Olympics... not like desperate housewive somewere in Florida.

Cp6uja, you are looking at Sharapova primarily as an athlete.

I don't.

It really doesn't matter what I think, of course, but my impression is that Sharapova herself reached the stage in her life where she doesn't see herself as primarily an athlete. Much more and beyond, she is now an international celebrity living increasingly in a glitzy zone between high couture, fashion, and show business.

This is precisely the reason why it is going to be more and more difficult to maintain her tennis at a very high level.

No other tennis player is remotely in her situation. No other sportsman, perhaps.

A desperate housewife somewhere in Florida? -- Don't make me laugh. The last thing that can happen to her. And believe me, she doesn't need any billionaire for husband. She is sufficiently rich herself, and even if she stops playing tennis tomorrow she will be generating more money than most of active tennis players can earn on the WTA tour.

I get what your saying though:lol:

yeah, but when lindsay was on top Venus/ Serena were more like Safina level players.... so like i said you never know who will break out... could have a new up and comer to dominate or a veteren who finally finds her form....

I'm just curious what is WTAW expectations (in average) of all current TOP10, so i count all votes. I dont have too much time so all votes which is not in current 1-10 order or is without exact predictions for some players i not count (including myself prediction here :tape:) and also like not enough serious is not counted votes which predict less than 10 new slams in future for all current TOP10 or where for one player is predicted more slams titles in future than for all other 9. Here is results:

AVERAGE EXPECTATIONS:
N A M E Career Since Now
Ana Ivanovic 4.61 (3.61)
Jelena Jankovic 1.58 (1.58)

Anna Chakvetadze 0.29 (0.29)
Dinara Safina 0.74 (0.74)
Agnieszka Radwanska 1.84 (1.84)

1 Ana Ivanovic - 5
Should get a couple of Frenches and will probably get a couple of hard court slams.

2 Jelena Jankovic - 3
A couple of Aussies, will probably win at least one French too.

3 Maria Sharapova - 6
She's going at one every other year, that should continue until her mid 20s at least

4 Svetlana Kuznetsova - 2
I think she'll pull a French Open out once in her career.

5 Serena Williams - 10
Since 2003 has been doing a slam every other year, I'd say she'll do that until she's 30.

6 Elena Dementieva - 0
A combination of nerves and serves will sadly stop her.

7 Venus Williams - 9
Probably has a couple of Wimbledons left in her.

8 Anna Tchakvetadze - 0
Too much of a mental case.

9 Dinara Safina - 0
Don't believe she can keep it together for a whole slam run with that kind of pressure on her.

10 Agnieszka Radwanska - 0
Pretty much any player with weapons on form will always beat her.

clijsters was in several and she only won 1.... Davenport was in tons of finals and only won the 3 at the start of her career (and while she was overweight at that)

You really just never know.... which is why i didnt give my opinion...No , Davenport won her slams in 98, 99, and 2000, she had already been playing since 93, so more in the middle of career and when she won her first slam she was about the same size that she is now.And she 's been in 6 finals.

It's really interesting to see what people predict (other than the obviously biased choices).

Seeing people predicting Radwanska to win 3,4,5, even 6 majors and not have Jankovic winning any makes me realize I may be missing something. Great players like Capriati, Davenport, and Sharapova have only won 3 majors. I really can't see Radwanska stepping up to that kind of level or becoming world #1.

Also, I'm surprised to see how many people have Sharapova and Ivanovic winning fewer than 5 slams each. They could get close to 5 each within a year and a half (not that I assume they will, but they are without peer IMO, in that 21U age group).

And Jankovic will win a major. She just must. ;)
Also, Safina could certainly nab a major, maybe even next year.

I don't really think Dementieva, Vera, and Chakvetadze have it in them. And I don't think Sveta has the capacity to do it again.

Venus and Serena are the true wildcards. When they win, you think it shouldn't ever stop, but then there are inexplicable losses, questions of dedication, and injuries. And now their ages may become an issue.

I just don't see any of the current top 10 really dominating the slams over the next few years, due to a combination of injuries, mental frailties and burn out. I don't see it happening but if the Williams really knuckle down and concentrate on their tennis over the latter part of their careers I may have underestimated their totals a bit in favour of the other 4 players I've given slams to.

Not sure who of the next generation are gonna be big. I would say Wozniaki has a shot at multiple slams, maybe deBrito too. Pascek and Cornet outside bets? No doubt some up and coming Chinese players will be there or there abouts as well.

And finally, since I'm British, and assuming the media and pressure don't get to her and she stays focused on her tennis (a lot of assumptions there:p), I've gotta think Laura Robson will have a shot at some slams.

You do know you've only got about 2 and a half years worth of slams added up right? That wont even be long enough for Venus to stop winning Wimbledon and give the newbies a shot at it.....

I generally stand by them, except I'll add one to Serena, take one from Radwanska, and add one to Safina. I think in four years, the list will be completely different. Dementieva's getting up there, as is Venus, and Chakvetadze may no longer be a force.

GENERALLY, the players in the top 20 at the moment that I see becoming fixtures of the top 10 four years from now are Jankovic, Ivanovic, Sharapova, Safina, Kuznetsova, Radwanska, and Wozniacki. Those 7 I think will spend 40 weeks a year (on average) in the top 10, with incursions from Serena and Venus (who are never going to retire, apparently :worship:) Azarenka, Szavay, Cibulkova, Vaidisova (if she pulls herself together), Cornet, and Paszek, and a rising group of players we haven't even seen rounding out the top 25 (plus, obviously, a few veterans who aren't going to stay top 20 forever but aren't going to retire in four years, like Chakvetadze, Dementieva, Hantuchova, etc.). That's a little off topic, but it gives us a clue of who is going to emerge as the players to beat. I have doubts we'll see a vaguely out-of-the-blue emergence like Sharapova (who would've thought she'd win Wimbledon that year? I mean, I could see her doing it in two years, but that was a fast emergence to the upper echelon of tennis). More Ivanovic-like in the ranking/slam progression.

Real pleasure to read your analysis, Erik. If I can add something, I personally don't see Radwańska winning any grand slams sooner than in two years. And this only if her game further develops -- and she can still perfect her game in nearly every department, including her recognized strengths, which is tactics and choice of shots. I may be conservative in this assessment but better be conservative than foolish.

I wonder what are your thoughts (and I am directing this question to every other forum member as well), regarding what kind of tennis players are likely to emerge as new stars, say, in two years in the upper echelons of ladies' tennis? Hard-hitting giant amazons like Ivanović, Vaidišová, Safina, or even Dementieva, or perhaps master technicians like Hénin, or perhaps somebody like Clijsters? Do girls like Clijsters still stand a chance to be at the very top when the current emphasis is rather on power, height, and weight? Janković seems to indicate that there is still some room at the Top for other styles of tennis, but you have to be extremely good at it.

I still believe in Elena. She will grab a singles grand slam title.

On the current top ten...Sharapova and the Williams are already multi-slam champions. I think Ivanovic and Jankovic will join their ranks as multi-slam winners, and I would expect Radwanska to win a slam or two as well. Cornet is another hopeful for a slam, but only on clay, IMO, but she's got a good shot. Safina...I don't know about her. She has the game and now mentality to win a slam, so one or two wouldn't be out of the realm of possibility, but unless she gets a lucky break, there will always be one or two players who can beat her. Her only real shot at a slam is also RG (just look at her two good USO runs, both jokes, and she's never made it past the third round at AO and WIM, though I expect that to change.)

I think Paszek could win a slam too, but aside from these names, I'm not looking at any other slam winners for awhile.

I think the premium is going to start being on movement. Being able to win a slam with lazy footwork simply doesn't happen anymore. Look at the slam winners this season: Sharapova in Australia, who moves front-to-back as well as many (and is now injured, so what does that tell you?); Ivanovic, who is a terrific mover on clay (not in terms of speed, but in terms of feet); Venus who is the current champion of pure defense and pure offense combined; and Serena, who has probably the finest footwork in the top 10 when she's not lazy about it.

Think about it: what has been the number one cause of injuries in the past 5ish years? Wrist, shoulder, back? Knee and ankle are there, but less frequent. We've seen Venus (2003), Clijsters (2004), Sharapova (2006/now), and Ivanovic (now) all sidelined or weakened by their upper body injuries, plus Davenport and Dementieva hampered in the early 2000s. Who hasn't been sidelined from injury for significant periods of time? Jankovic, for one, but Kuznetsova (back injury in '05 the only example I can think of), Chakvetadze, Radwanska, Schnyder, Sugiyama...

NOW, it's true that the players that haven't been injured ALSO haven't been in the winners circle at huge events much (Jankovic's Tier Is and Kuznetsova's 2004/2006 titles the exceptions). But Kuznetsova just fell out of the top 5 for the first time since late 2006, and Jankovic has been there since RG 2007. I think when we start seeing more qualified movers who are capable of hitting through their shots, or at least avoiding getting butchered by power (Radwanska, Wozniacki, etc.) we'll realize that movement is the next big thing to come along.

Venus and Serena lifted two-side power tennis to the realm of excellent movement (and excellent serving with movement, too), but I'm not sure that's going to be the stock and trade of the tour forever. Who else can hit hard off both sides, move without embarrassing themselves, and serve? There's no up-and-comer I can think of who can do all those things. Kuznetsova comes closest, but her backhand isn't a weapon the way Serena and Venus have weapons on their weaker wings. Azarenka, too, but I'm not yet 100% sold on her movement. The slow powerful women are having trouble stringing together 12 months of good, uninjured play, and they are still young. I think movers who can hold their own are the style we'll see the most of in the future. They're durable, reliable, and bound to breakthrough here and there.

I agree with you about Radwanska's progress. I see consistent quarterfinals and semifinals in the Slams next year. I think 2010 will be her slam-break-through year.

As for future players, I think that big hitting is here to stay. As long as the equipment stays as it is, many, if not all players, will hit the ball with pace. Movement will also improve. I think the next biggest thing to change will be greater movement. After that, it's hard to tell. It may be variety (more backhand slices?), net play, or something else.

I think you're right that big hitting is here to stay, but players who hit as hard as Rezai, Mirza, even Vaidisova and Azarenka I think will be fewer and fewer, simply because the bodies aren't holding up. I'd bet it will resemble Jankovic off the backhand a little more, and possibly increase the topspin on the forehand. Players with super-flat forehands seem to get injuries like crazy nowadays. Only Dementieva and Davenport haven't had wrist injuries, and they've had shoulder problems in the past. Meanwhile, Kuznetsova and Schnyder can blast the topspin until they die.
