I believe I posted here something from ruby wax before I know anne wanted to visit the anna frank house so I thought she and maybe other people would like to see the next episode of ruby wax goes dutch cuz they are visiting that house they tell the story with it and it is pretty much in english. also there are no other tourist around when they do it.
just let me know and I will post it.

oow and then something totally different I have bought a new camera so I can make great pics of sveta in stuttgart I can get her really close with this one.

Although it is usually not my style :) I am going to beg you to do it please because I really enjoyed the last ruby wax post and I have always been intrigued by the Anne Frank story.

Oh, yes please, Mel ;). I understand the house can get very crowded with groups and tourists; it would be cool to almost see it without people, as it was when Anne lived there.

And speaking of Argentina, I've always wanted to go there myself :). I don't eat a lot of meat, but I've heard they have the best steaks on the planet . I guess that's a silly reason to go, but I could easily eat my way across the world .

I don't eat any meat, including fish and seafood etc but I would like to try vegetables from every country. I could only go to Argentina during winter  actually any country during their winters.

I can't eat fatty or fried meat of any kind, only very lean, like skinless chicken and the lean beef. So I probably could, and should, just go totally vegetarian. It's certainly better on the wallet!

The most exotic we have here are japanese restaurants (that are always empty, which I don't understand as I love japanese food) and from Pakistan (never tried). And I wish there was any russian restaurant where I live, but there isn't.Maybe when I go to Madrid for the tennis tournament if I can convince any of my friends,I know there has to be a russian in Madrid!

Well cos Britain prides itself on being multicultural we have a lot of restaurants based on sooo many cuisines. I don't like indian food cos it's too spicy for me. But I have to say afghan (shameless plug) food is pretty good - if you can find one you should try it out. I like russian food and my mum makes it from time to time, we have a handy shop about 20 minutes away called USSR *chuckles* So broaden your horizons Stef, thats your second assignment.

Thai food

Much of it is mega rich, based on peanut and coconut, but Stef is right; lots of veggies and noodles.

I've had borsht and pelmeni, and that's my great intro to Russian food . Does Chicken Kiev count?

A lot of our so-called "ethnic" food is only roughly based on the real thing. So much of it is Americanized. We have "Japanese" restaurants where the chef comes out and throws knives around, puts on a big show. My Japanese friend says that is as authentic as Kermit the Frog is an amphibian.

Afghan people also speak dari (persian dialect)which is called farsi in afghanistan ;) That's why afghan refugees mainly go to Pakistan OR Iran cos they speak either or both of the languages there. My family are mainly tajiks and we speak farsi at home and my mum knows a little pashtu. Yeah that's why we drew parallels with Oz and NZ and wales and England.

That's reeks of gayness, sorry to Prince Albert lovers but seriously..............

If you check out page 41 - post 611, someone on this forum whose name rhymes with 'Raz' make a comment about my dog being a gangster because of the hoodie, anyways upon further investigation it appears that 'Raz' may be right, I have noticed a tattoo in her left ear which she claims she got when she was neutered (a likely story), she is having a turf war with the next door neighbour's cat (totally gangster behaviour), I found $5,000 in my freezer and I'm certain I didn't put it there and finally I got home from work the other night and there's a card table in the middle of the room with full ashtrays, empty bottles and the dog door was still swinging which suggests a quick exit! I rest my case your honour.

Mel, you type in the name of a subject that you are interested in and press search, if something comes up then there will also be tabs which might say "all results", "people", "groups" or "events", if you click on "groups" another page appears and you can scroll through and pick what group most interests you and click "join group". I have a hypothetical question for all of you, especially as you are European or Australian:

There's a roaring debate going on in one of my other forums. If you are on a date with a man, and go out to dinner, do you let him order for you (after making your selection known)? Is this common in your country?

I realize this is a moot point for some ;). I'm just curious if this is a custom elsewhere.

As for the U.S., it's not very common. It used to be one of those things a lot more common than they are now (like holding doors, or walking on the outside). For me, I'm very independent, have ordered a meal in many a restaurant, and can certainly speak up for myself. The only exception might be in an ethnic restaurant or in a different country, where I didn't speak the language. Then I might let my date order something I might like, but it's regardless of gender ;).

Over here it would be considered perhaps unusual for your partner to order for you, normally the person taking the order would ask you both directly and you would give individual answers, if someone ordered for me I would not consider this to be chivalrous behaviour but rather a showing of dominant behaviour (and I would not be enamoured). I agree with the exception, I would let someone order for me in another language.

Apr 20th, 2009, 04:18 PM
That would be unusual. When I go to dinner with another person I don't tell the waiter the other persons choice or vice versa. Cos it's your own individual choice as to what you wanna eat :p But I wouldn't be offended cos I wouldn't let them get my order wrong  It's food goddamit!

Bероника
Apr 20th, 2009, 04:46 PM
Hmm,I don't date men,so the first part of your question is unlikely, but the answer is no.Here it's usual every person orders oneself, usually the waiter will ask and each person orders what she wants to eat.The exception would probably be as you said if you are in a different country or don't speak the language for obvious reasons. This said I wouldn't mind if the other person does it as long as she's asked me first,of course.

Then I might let my date order something I might like, but it's regardless of gender ;).

over here you just order yourself unless you both agreed to take the same then one can order and say the same for the order or you agreed to be suprised but not out of nothing no.

Mel, you type in the name of a subject that you are interested in and press search, if something comes up then there will also be tabs which might say "all results", "people", "groups" or "events", if you click on "groups" another page appears and you can scroll through and pick what group most interests you and click "join group". Hope this helps :D

ok I found how to get a member of a group but where can I see of wich groups I am a member of? cuz when I get a lot of group I cant remember wich ones. but I cant find it at the moment

Native English speaker here :p, but I too took French in high school (for us, that starts around age 15). We had a choice of Spanish, French, or German, and I thought French was the most romantic. My first teacher was a Croatian man, the second a Russian (ironically). Now I'm going back and studying Spanish, and so far not too bad. By no stretch would I be considered good at it, or fluent, but I understand what's going on in class.

I took Latin later in college (required for pre-med), but all I remember is "E Pluribus Unum" :p.

Hi Karen. welcome :)

You Guys know so many languages. I know three myself...Urdu, English and Punjabi. Urdu is my first language spoken at home and it is really quite beautiful and elegant. English I learned in School (was and is my favorite subject)and main mode of communication outside home. Punjabi is the best language if you want to abuse (j/k) someone . learnt it coz my grandparents speak it and its so expressive.
i always hated the Urdu teachers at school because even though i speak it perfectly I have terrible problems in writing and interpreting poetry in it :o We have french teacher who teaches philosphy and its like a mini class in latin for some reason but me loves it :D.

Being in hospital I missed so much interesting talks here, damn! :(
English is my 2nd lang (I don't count Ukrainian as second cause my mom is from Ukraine and we speak at home sometimes at Ukrainian just for fun, also i don't count Udmurt and Tatar, the langs my grandparents speak, every summer till 12-13 yo I stayed with them and that's why I understand a bit both langs and can swear on Udmurt perfectly and on Tatar even better )
I started to learn English at 7 yo but quitted at 9. And began to study it at school again at 10 yo. at 15 yo I started to learn Spanish, quitted in 6 months and then in a year began to learn again for about 4 month. (U see, I'm a bit fickle :P ).
In 17 yo I was interested in German and I've been studying it till present moment.
Also I studied Latin at college (it was a must). And I tried to learn polish, Serbo-Croatian (thanks to native lang and Ukrainian too I can understand them (around 50-60 % of information). that's all I think :)
PS: in senior school I had mad and weird teacher of English! He was drunkard, often he drank beer at lessons, he spat too, made us learn by heart Deep Purple songs, he lived with 20 yo girl who was twice younger him and called her "Mochalka" (Mop in English), then when we played cards at lesson (yeah, we played cards, domino, slept, sometimes he did us homework for drawing cause he was teacher of drawing before he finished English courses and requalified to English teacher) so when we played cards (and it was cards with heroes of "Charmed" on the one side) he pointed on Alisia Milano and said "Hey, It's my Mochalka", then took the card and added "though mine has bigger boobs". We(girls) were shocked and our boys who slept all these time on the back desks woke up at the very same time and started to scrutinize Alisia's bust! Old school days... how I miss them :D

well english is my 4th language actually on school my first year we got first french and german but I was not as good at it as english I totally forgot everything about it especially the gramatics. german I can read and understand but not speak anymore french is a hopeless case at the moment but in second year english came with it and at that I was pretty good.

Vero you are very smart :worship: french was the only language we could learn at school and I had a male teacher who used to spit everytime he spoke, I practically had to take an umbrella to each lesson so I didn't learn much because I was trying to avoid his attacks  these days I think most students in oz learn japanese, btw your english is excellent. Sing out if you come to oz I can show you great ocean road etc :D

yeah we had a teacher like that too he didnt give french but how to breed animals. I remember one time and I will never forget. he had something hanging on his mouth and we where watching it the whole time at one point I made a joke of what he said(the whole class laughing offcourse) but nobody was paying attention to that thing on his mouth and when he got our attention again it was gone. all the people on the first line freaked out cuz he usually spits it on your tables or when your are unlucky on your clothes. at one point I found it and screamed through his explantion of breeding that I had found it. all my classmates where happy with me but I got kicked out of class. and had to go to the head of the school. I explained it over there she could laugh about it and I got lucky and didnt have to do extra homework.

Were you happy with your decision afterwards ;)
I chose Latin as third language (German is my mother-tongue) & I always wonder what would be easier to learn, if German isn't you mother-tongue :)

I learned german for 1 and a half year but that was long ago and I have forgotten almost everything nowadays :o I made another attempt at it later in language school, but I was already learning russian and working at the same time,I had not enough time to dedicate to everything and I dropped german and only followed with russian. To me german was very very diffcult,I had to put a lot of hours in it.I guess latin would have been easier for me since I'm a native spanish speaker, but I've always liked challenges.Maybe someday I'll take it up again because I never get tired of learning languages and I guess I might still remember things, but at the moment I have enough with russian.

I seem to be able to read and write things in foreign languages better than actually being able to speak them. Whenever i try and speak a foreign language i always sound so english and it really annoys me.

With german I can get by with german subtitles when I watch foreign films...5 years of doing german in 'high school' paying off in a very minimal way :p

Just realised all the language teachers at my respectable all girls school were mental. The german teacher I had ran over a student - she survived ;) The french one hit the pupils by throwing pencils at us and the head of languages was a suspected alcoholic...:tape: Zut alors!

Hope you are all better Tatiana

Mel I laughed so hard when I read this that I had to explain what I was laughing about to the woman who works near me, she says it was worse than my yelling at the screen when I'm watching livescoring. It took me 3 goes to finish the story because I was laughing too hard. It's now been 3.5 hours since I originally read it and I'm still giggling to myself.

Our teacher was the same and I believe he faked a french accent, one of our school assignments was to take 10 french labels to class, I found a bottle of wine that my mum had with a french label and I couldn't get the label off so I broke the bottle and took the label still attached to the glass, apparently it was expensive, I also wasn't able to sit down for a few days after I was found out :o

hey dont usually write on forum but thought i would be brave and get involved. We learnt french at school but we also had the chance to do spanish or latin. glad you liked it so much. at school I was always the clown. I was walking into the class singing and you should hear me sing I am horrible at it(you can ask vero I showed her a clip of my singing on vacation) but normaly I could get away with it teahers liked me very much(still dont know why) but this time I had to go. when I first went to this school I was all quite and didnt say that much then my mentor told me I should be myself and just have fun. he wished he had never said that. It was always my excuse when teachers got mad and it worked.

Mel, it's now been 10 hrs and I'm still highly amused, I was the same at school, although I spent more time sitting outside in corridors than in the classroom and you should see my school reports, good grades but the comments "stef is a great student when she applies herself, however she is easily distracted and also distracts other students around her", oh the shame of it , we used to get parent/teacher interview requests where your parents had to go into the school and find out how you were going, I used to shove that piece of paper in a green vase at my parent's house, when they moved they found them all, I think there were about 8 or so.
