My son is all signed up to play spring soccer (or football everywhere else :p). Even with David Beckham, the game just hasn't been as popular as basketball or American football, but maybe it will grow. He's excited, and it's a good way to burn off all that nine-year old energy.

why mr.pink?

well ofcourse I like pink and she has a lot of reasons where she got her name from one of them is she had seen the movie reservoir dogs they are going under cover and all get a undercover name one got mr pink. he was the smart ass so that is why she chose that name only left the mr. so I am adding it again cuz my guinea pig was male kind. but now I decided to go with jon bon jovi.

That's awful . I want Josh to do his best at whatever he does, but I'm not going to yell and scream at him, ever. My goal was for him to make more friends his own age and get good exercise, not to turn him into another Beckham (though if that happened, he could be good to his mother ;)).

I think it's not a nickname, it is special informal adress case of her name, sometimes in Russia when you call to someone close to you (I mean someone who could say you "Hi" not "Good afternoon") and his/her name - usually short name ends on 'a' you could prononce it without last 'a'. For example, you also could hear in Russian crowd "Ver, davaj!" or "Davaj Dinar:bounce:" or "Molodets Len!" or " Mish, vpereod!" when Zvonareva or Safina or Dementieva or Youzhnyi plays.

As about Sveta nicknames, Russian affectionate diminutive of the name "Svetlana" could be also Svetka, Svetik, Svetochka.
I remember Navratilova called her Babushka (granny) - may be it was the only word she know in Russian, I don't now, and Sveta for a joke called her Kuznechik(Grasshopper), which is also could be nickname for Sveta.

Since this is off-topic, I had a couple of questions about Russian . I'm trying to study your language, just me and a book :help:.

1. I've learned that there is a formal way to greet someone you don't know well, or is your elder (like saying "Good afternoon"). Then there is a familiar way to greet someone (sort of like "Hi!"), which you would use with friends or classmates. Let's say you are lucky enough to meet Sveta, and you want to try to greet her in Russian. Which is proper to use? (I would probably use whatever I could pronounce, then feel like an idiot when she laughed and said "Hi!". )

2. I've learned that Russian names have three parts, as in Vero's signature. From the summer of Anna Karenina, I've figured out that friends and acquaintences use FirstName MiddleName to address someone. Let's say you are going to have an actual conversation with Sveta :help:. What would be the correct thing to do-call her Svetlana, call her Svetlana MiddleName, or call her Miss Kuznetsova?

I'm honestly not trying to offend, or ask stupid questions at all.

3. This might be the dumbest question of all, but SvetaIsTheBest, is your name Anushka, or is that an endearment?

Anne

There is two kinds of you in Russian - vy - if you adress to more then one person and formal to person and ty - for one familiar person.
Btw, if I am not mistake in Spainish there are three kinds of you?
Anywhere, if you greet someone vy, you say "Zdravstvuite" - I understand, it hard to remember and pronounce, some of Russians like to mumble "Zdraste"
To ty greeting would be "Zdravstvui" or "Privet", but "Zdravstvui" is rarely said, for example a child should greet a teacher "Zdravstvuite" and a teacher greet him "Zdravstvui".

I think the most common and easy way to greet Sveta on her language would be "Privet, Sveta!" - I think it is the most easy and pronounciable way.

The formal greeting for "vy" would be "Zdravstvuite, Svetlana Aleksandrovna" But 1)she is young girl, she does not use to the "vy" status, it comes with age; 2)You have not any official dependences with her, you are just her fan; 3)You know who is she; 4) Sveta is friendly and down-to-earth person, she would like informal way of communication, so the best way would be - "Privet, Sveta!"
Though, you could say "Fizkultprivet, Babushka!" At least she would be surprised:tape:

Russian journalists usually adress to her as Svetlana or Sveta. It's not 19 century now, people became more democratic.
FirstName + MiddleName are better for her parents, Galina Georgievna and Aleksandr Anatolievich or for Olga Vasilievna Morozova. They have a considerable age and solid acivements.
Sometimes there are adresses "Gospozha" and "Gospodin" (Instead of Mass and Mister), but it widespread among businessmen more.

Balshoi spasibo, Diogenovna ;). Everything you say makes sense, and I appreciate your help.

After all, Sveta travels the world and meets a lot of people who can't speak a word of Russian and don't know the "rules". I'm also sure I'm not the only fan who can speak a few words and would try to show off . I just would not want to make a bad mistake. I don't care if she laughs at my accent .

I love Svetochka, too, but maybe that is way too familiar ;).

Obviously, Vero speaks far better Spanish than I do, but from what I remember, there is the formal usted (we didn't use this in class much), the informal tu (like the poster on the professor's wall that read "Te Quiero Taco Bell"), and yet another formal form that I can't remember without finding my textbook. It's interesting to me that many languages have formal and informal forms of "you", but in English, we use "you" to address the President or our neighbor, no difference.

Thanks, again :)

Silly question time: what is "fizkultprivet"? I do know "babuska" is granny, which I know would make her laugh .

Hi Anne! Literally "Fizkult-privet" is something like a "sporty cheer", although the expression has little to do with sports these days. It came about as an ironic reference to the ideology of the 30ies when people were encouraged to go in for sports, but is no longer perceived as such. It's just a jocular greetiing. The best translation probably would be "Hail to the comrade" to give it some Soviet-time flavor  So, mix it with Babushka - and it will definitely make Sveta's day

do they call you Natalia or Natasha?

Hi Вероника! People here call me whatever they want to call me  Most people call me Natalia, the ones who know that I go by Natasha too - call me Natasha. My boss sometimes calls me Natalie or Nat. They know I don't care, so they take advantage of it

Anne, how's the weather in AR? Is winter storm covering your area too? We have some winter chill over here, which is not normal for central Texas, especially in mid December. Most likely tomorrow morning we'll stay home until temperatures get higher and ice melts on the roads. I'm used to cold weather, but I don't like when it's up and down like this. It was somewhere in the 70s on Sunday...

Hey LanaKuz, I didn't realize you were in Texas!
I live in Dallas and work in Ft. Worth, so I know what you mean about waiting for the roads to clear. No way am I getting out there with those crazy Texas drivers! I'm stuck here at home dreading a 40 minute commute that will become a 2 hour commute, I'm sure! Arrrrghhh!!!
And, the wind here recently has been awful. I've given up playing tennis because my toss goes everywhere! Normally, I like to play in the cold... I'm just glad I live in a place where tennis can be a "winter sport" (not today, of course - maybe this Friday when it's going to be in the 70s again!)

I am iced in! Schools are off today, and I'm sure it's very slippery. It started to sleet yesterday, and went all night. It remains to be seen how many places are open, so I can make the calls I need to. Otherwise, we have a holiday!

I'm also used to winter and snow, but down here we don't get snow as much as ice. Ice can be worse, in my opinion, because it can knock down power lines and is very dangerous to drive on. Also, this southern city is not prepared for winter storms as a northern city would be, so a little snow or ice = city shuts down.

I feel a little sorry for children here . I loved snow days when I was a child;we could play outside for hours! But here, it's just the grey skies and sheets of ice on the road that you can't skate on.

Hello all,
Since this is the off-topic space, I wanted to see if anyone here knew anything about Nadia Petrova's illness. According to a newspaper in New Zealand, she was hospitalized with viral meningitis.
I started a thread in Petrova's area, but this is such a knowledgeable, active group that I figured I'd try here too. If it is truly viral, I wouldn't worry too much. But, I don't even know if she's still in the hospital or not.

Hi, Ratherquirky:

I found this: http://www.womenstennisblog.com/2008/12/20/nadia-petrova-discharged-from-hospital/. So, obviously, she's out of the hospital but I'm sure she won't be playing the early tourneys in Australia; maybe not the AO, either.

Meningitis is scary stuff, and it can kill you . Fortunately, she's a young, very healthy and fit woman. I too wish her a speedy recovery!

Thanks for the info! See, I knew you folks are well-informed! You guys rock!

If she's already out of the hospital and feeling better, then it was indeed viral. Bacterial meningitis is much, much more serious.
Thanks again! I'll post this info on the appropriate thread over in Nadia's area.

Yeah, I've only been on GM once or twice. People seem so mean-spirited and angry over there. But, folks here are very helpful and knowledgeable, and so friendly! I know that not everyone likes Nadia, but I like her game - and I love that big serve.
Thanks again to everyone for being so helpful.
I can't wait until Sydney when I can cheer for Sveta again with you guys.
Happy Holidays!

Анна
Jan 18th, 2009, 08:14 PM
Completely cruel and unnecessary. I would be offended if it was another player, not just Sveta. I noticed there was a shot of a Special Olympics child (with Sveta's head superimposed), crossing a finish line. That offends me on an entirely different level, as I have a child with Downs' Syndrome.

Whoever made this, and those who laughed at it, are the retarded ones.

they are always have comments on sveta her looks ( wich I really love by the way) they dont talk that much about her as a person wich is more then looks. I think these are people not happy with there own looks. and I dont know how old they are but they are very childish to me.
I stay with my statement that beauty is on the inside and hope that they will see it too when they get older and wiser.
that's all I can say but what gets me the most that it are so many people doing it

I think you're right. I tell my kids that there are lots of people who aren't happy with how they look or who they are, so they have to make fun of others and tease other people. That's how they try to feel good, by bringing others down. And sure, we're here mentioning Sveta's legs or her hair or outside things, but her real beauty is in her character. Some people are beautiful on the outside, but ugly on the inside, which makes them all the way ugly to me.

You're very young yourself to realize that. You will do well to remember that.

well I wish my parents learned me that. I personaly dont like it when people judge me on it so I dont do it on them. in my family it is all about money and what kind of job you have also a bad thing I think.
so I am pretty glad I see it like that way but in my generation most of the people dont think that way they got that image of a barbie girl and that is how they are supposed to look.
kinda like what I wrote in one of my first poems I posted on the forum.

Анна
Jan 18th, 2009, 10:16 PM
I understand what you're saying, Mel. My parents taught me that someone's job didn't matter, money didn't matter and looks didn't matter. I feel fortunate that I grew up believing that. And it isn't just your generation that has some impossible look to make. I think Sveta gets teased a lot because she's not a Barbie doll, but muscular and strong. I relate to her, as I too wasn't pretty by others' standards.

Back to that thread; I don't know if it should be reported or not; it was pretty offensive.

Анна
Jan 23rd, 2009, 04:18 PM
:p That's the only part of the tennis tour I don't like-choosing "favorites". Whatever Sveta's in, she's my favorite, even if I like her opponent very much (which usually happens), but what happens when it's two other people I like? Flip a coin? :p;).

BTW, I really like your countrywoman, Suarez-Novarro :), but only in a little sister way ,nothing else. I first noticed her at Fed Cup. I hope she has a good rest of the tournament :).

Yes,it's the same for me,always for Sveta when she plays but with 2 outside favourites it becomes more difficult to make a choice :p

I like Suarez Navarro too,she has a very beautiful backhand :hearts: and is really a sweet girl (yeah I could use the little sister expression as well).I first noticed her last year at Roland Garros when she played and won another one of my faves,Amélie Mauresmo.I think Carla's game is more suited to clay,I'm pleasantly surprised with her good AO.Yesterday I had a big joy when I saw she had defeated Venus, now I hope she doesn't stop here ;)

This is way off topic, even for this thread, but it's a story I can tell on myself that I think Vero will especially appreciate:

I'd stopped for some lunch, and seated next to me was a young couple and their baby girl. The father was American, but he and his wife were speaking Spanish. I decided to give it a try, and waited for a pause. I leaned over, pointed to the baby, and told the woman, "Perezosa!" She looked at me like , but the man smiled and asked "Did you mean bonita?" I'd just called her baby "lazy" :p. The word I wanted was "bonita"-beautiful. "Bonita" is beautiful for babies, if I am correct, and "guapa" is for Sveta ;).

I was so embarrassed , but the woman was a good sport and both of them had a laugh and weren't offended. She turned out to be from Spain, and had met her husband there. That will teach me to get a big head when I can say a few sentences in another language .

I'm going to my children's valentine's parties (I don't even think I wrote that right ) in a bit, and I found small boxes of candy for each of them. My daughter's says "You quack me up", because she makes a quacking sound with her hand to cheer me up

This day is hard on me. I'm soon to be single again, which is hard even though I know it's for the best. So, I'm focusing on love for my family and friends, not the romantic kind.

(if that's TMI, just tell me to keep quiet :tape::p)

no dont be quiet!!

if you feel like it you know you can pm me right.

Awwww....thank you for the Happy Valentine's everyone.
I get to spend the whole day moving from my apartment into my friend's house. I'm going to live with her for a while, so I can get through the next year of work/school. I've got everything packed, so some of my friends are coming over to help me move.
Should be a fun day!!!!

HAPPY VALENTINE'S DAY EVERYONE!!! :D

Here in Spain it's only celebrated in a romantic way,i mean it's not usual to do anything special for your family members or friends as mel did but i find this interesting even if for me no need to be a special day to show your loved ones how much you love them and care for them ;) It's important to show it all year long.

oh anne  that's always difficult and no,you should not keep quiet,as others already told you if you need to talk you can do it here or by pm

@Veronica-Yea, this day is celebrated in Russia, u see we live in the era of globalization so it's a common thing that young ppl celebrate this day too, Also we have russian analog of Valentine's day-Day of St Petr and Phevronia(8th of July). But In Russia we do love to celebrate all fest days so Valentine's Day got accustomed here :)

Thank you all for welcoming me to the board!
Veronika I am actually Irish but I live in England. I was laughing when I saw the English flag next to my post (no offense to anybody who's English) my broad Irish accent usually is a total give away. I started following tennis again more this year.
I stumbled on the tennis forum, I actually quite like the blast from the past section. I was a great fan of Graf long ago. The only opportunities to watch Tennis on the TV for me was the French open & Wimbledon. There's too much emphasis on Football on mainstream TV.
I quite like doubles matches so I wanted to find out more about Navratilova's doubles partner Sveta. Actually I think Martina was quite a helpful person to a lot of players over the years. This forum has informed me about her play and the type of person she is. Well you might not get a lot of posts but they could be long!

Hi Julie :wavey:
I'm from Ireland also...from Wexford, but I live in the US right now.
Yes I grew up watching Martina play at Wimbledon on BBC. There never was enough tennis coverage on TV over there
I also stopped watching tennis for a few years but fell in love with the game again when I saw Sveta practicing one day. I don't play anymore, but I'm even more passionate about the game than I was when I was younger.
Anyway, enough rambling from me.
Nice to meet a fellow Irish person :)

Hi Anniemac,

I'm from Cork, been in England since 2000. No the coverage of tennis was rubbish, still is (I do go to the web).
I'm waiting for the underarm serve to be back in Vogue!
I would like to go to Eastbourne, I have been to Wimbledon after 6.00 but the opportunities to see a main draw match are slim.

:awww: You're all so sweet :hug:.

I had an epiphany last night. I can choose to focus on the positives in this situation, and the opportunities.
*I always felt I had to be at home, besides working time. Now, with my family getting older and into their own thing, I can get out into my own city. I do know there's a small but active community of like-minded people ;). I just love the arts, but haven't been in a very long time-time to reclaim all that.
*I can work out as much as I want (and that really helps with stress).
* My free time is mine, for whatever I want to do. I can throw myself into things that he didn't like to do, so I gave them up. Take it from me; if you start dating someone, don't give up who you are or make too many compromises. Bad idea.
*I can read a lot of books, without comments like "Why do you want to read War and Peace, anyway?" :fiery:
* That maybe love for yourself has to be there before you can love anyone else. I think sometimes as women, we're so quick to put everyone else's needs before ours. To some point, that's unselfish. But if done too far, we get lost and run-down. So maybe this year can be about me ;).

I think I just got lonely last night. It's hard to keep hearing "There's someone for you out there". Sometimes, my answer is "Yeah, a yak herder in Tibet, maybe". But if I can get out of that attitude, and take advantage of this time in my life, then things can be full and happy-and that's how they should be, with or without a partner.

Gee, I've gone all Dr. Phil :haha:

Vero , I hope the wedding was fun ;)
Mel :kiss: I hope your mum is feeling better.
Annie  good luck on the move

I'm Irish by ancestry ;), but I guess that doesn't count as much as first-generation .

For St. Valentines Day
A positive thought

La Vita Nuova
by Dante Alighieri

In that book which is
My memory . . .
On the first page
That is the chapter when
I first met you
Appear the words . . .
Here begins a new life

Hey Julie...I like that...I don't know any of Dante's poems, I am only familiar with the Divine Comedy...I love the Inferno, I even call the place where I work Hell's Fourth Circle.
But that's a great verse for Valentine's day.

Hi Anne. Glad to see that you're feeling better today. :wavey:

Vero: I had to run to the store just now, and there was another couple behind me speaking a foreign language. I couldn't recognize anything, so I waited until the woman smiled at me and then I asked if she minded telling where she was from. They were from Spain , but said they were from very far up north. I told them I had a friend in Valencia ;), but of course that's at the other end of the country. Of course, they had a cute son, but after the perizosa story, I wasn't going there again . I don't live in a large city, and there is a small but growing immigrant population; what are the chances that someone from your country would be right there?

ETA: If I didn't recognize even a word, could they speak a dialect? I'm sure they would understand Spanish as spoken all over the rest of the country.

yeah,if they are from north,it was maybe basque,or galician or also catalan. If it was similar to portuguese,it was galician. If it was sounding similar to spanish and even french it was catalan. If it was not similar to anything else,it was basque.Basque (euskera) is the only language of all that are spoken in Spain that is not a romance language. Can you not remember where exactly from north they were? But if you didn't recognise a single word,it was probably basque as the other 2 have some things in common with spanish/castilian.

you can read about languages of Spain here:

How interesting! No, whatever it was, it didn't sound anything close to French or Spanish. All I could think of was "Pyrenees?", and they said "Yes, yes!" I think they were excited that I knew where the Pyrenees are :).

The Basque are very interesting. No one really knows where the language, or the people, came from.

yeah Catalonia is bilingual region. We have here in Valencia valencian, that's a regional dialect of catalan. But here there's not the same degree of bilinguism as you find in Catalonia for exemple. In my family, for exemple,we have never spoken valencian, only spanish/castilian.But I had to study it for some time to pass an exam and I liked it.The grammar is very similar to spanish, and the vocabulary is closer to french I would say, while the pronunciation is a lot closer to spanish. That's why I said in previous posts that there are similarities between spanish, french and catalan.

Just bumping this back up to say I went to my first soccer match today :). OK, so it was my son playing-he's a "striker", and got to kick the ball into play to start the second half. He must have played all together half of the game. It was so much fun-I'm such a mum, yelling and shouting whenever he managed to kick the ball in the right direction . Even better, his team won 3-0 :bounce:. I may well be a new soccer fan.

I used to be fluent as a little kid but then I moved here and learnt english instead so russian went on the back burner and I forgot it.

Dima and Marat had to lose their doubles match and Dima had to be 0-2 down in the 4th rubber :p

I don't get why people love London so much, I live in Greater London and I haven't been to central london in months...gotta get up early to get the train if you wanna spend a lot of time visiting the galleries/theatres etc, but that means you have to pay A LOT for a travel card on the trains and the people are generally rude and selfish...that's not a bad thing cos us Londoners know it and accept it but tourists don't know it :p

That's a good question.

Toronto and Montreal are way up there, but don't seem "foreign" enough for me :p Toronto was four hours away, when I was a kid.

Beijing was absolutely fascinating, but I was such a jet-lagged mess.

I have to go with London, too ;). There was the whole "Henry VIII stood where I'm standing!" thing. Being there really brought history books alive. And yes, I walked across Abbey Road just like the Beatles. OTOH, I almost killed myself watching for traffic the wrong way :p, or throwing up my hands and pressing on imaginary brakes whenever I was in a car and we passed someone going the other way .

My old college is next to the palace Henry the 8th lived and my uni is nearby too. The amount of tourists going through is staggering!
My fav cities are Prague, Bohemia (karlovy vary) and Berne - the most beautiful geography ever! :hearts:

I still have not visited London nor Canada but these are places I'd like to vsit one day.

I also liked Prague and loved Karlovy Vary, but Prague was too crowded for my taste and people there not so nice.

PersephoneDisco
Mar 9th, 2009, 04:08 PM
I liked Prague because it was so busy - you could go down scary cobbled streets and still have some tourists to keep you company throughout the whole night! - didn't like the amount of british males drunk out there for their stag parties:rolleyes: There weren't any czech natives there apart from the police :p But in general if you want directions and you are in a general part of C.Republic and you ask it in russian, they will not reply - haven't got over the whole communism thing yet...
My mum kept forcing me to drink the spa water in Karlovy Vary - I didn't like it at all! Had a little and didn't feel cured of anything and I'm not good with hot liquid! :p

That water was foul :tape: I don't care if Marx and Goethe went there to drink it :p And those really awful cup things that people were drinking out of :help: I just liked the wafers :lick:
My mum forced me cos we all believe in the healing powers of water  I just didn't like how the tap was proper calcified and discoloured..I aint drinking something thats gonna discolour my teeth and make me look like a fool drinking out of that spouty cup thing!

I swear I saw a couple of women with bandaged faces ;) ;)

I am Thomas :wavey:

lol, I was going to change my sig and av anyway, because after a day or 2 all anger evaporates and I got over Sveta, Jelena and Jie´s crappy losses.

Right now, Sveta is kinda like a cow to me :help: I love cows, they are adorable, but sometimes cows are the most calm, dull, passionless animals.

Right now, Sveta needs passion and fire :hearts:
