Stefan was a good coach for Sveta. As this article reminds, she reached n.2 (her highest ranking ever, let's not forget) with him.
I thank him for that stage in his career Sveta!

In Moscow, moved one hour ahead of time.

I'd heard Russia got rid of two time zones altogether, though I don't remember where.

Trivia of the day: China, another huge country, is all on the same time zone. So, if it's 12 noon in Harbin (extreme northeast), it's 12 noon in Beijing, and 12 noon in the far west. So I suppose it can be the middle of the night, and be noon?

Yes, some regions in Russia have not switched to summer time.

Who knows these regions, then -
Udmurtia and Samara Region and from march 28 will begin to live according to Moscow time. Disappear, and the easternmost time zone: Chukotka and Kamchatka, Magadan to pass the time. An hour to Moscow time and will approach the Kemerovo Region.

I've heard of all of those, even the remote far eastern places :). On a clear day, you can stand on an island in Alaska and see the very edge of Russia :). No good way to go to Russia from Alaska, though-you're talking no roads or big airports. To me, that's one of the more interesting parts, simply because of the isolation.

Вероника, not for that)

I can put the article in russian, if you will understand and will be interesting to read.
Here it is:

My interest in Cass Bird comes from my interest in a certain model called Tasha Tilberg.

I don't live in Moscow, but my sister is there, she was going the parallel line of the metro at the same time with explosions. She listened to the speaker phone that some stations were blocked, but didn't know what happened. When she was out of underground, our near and dear ones from all over the world became to call her how is she and told to her what happened. So, she is OK, but a little scared now to use metropolitan, but thanks God, she escaped all of this.

Pour people who suffered from those explosions:sad:

And if Monday wasn't bad enough :fiery:, this time terrorism in southern Russia. I thought Tatiana was in Rostov, but she goes all over . My thoughts go out to all the Russian SKF's in this terrible time.

My friend Irina was OK. It was on the line she and her husband take to work, but she was out in the countryside that day and her husband had the car for the day. At least I didn't have to worry about my friend Tamara; she moved to be nearer her family in Bishkek last November.

As for me, I'm getting ready to take tests for graduate school in the fall, and just handling a lot of projects I put aside when I was so depressed, including my Russian book. The weather is really nice, and I like to be outside-sometimes at the expense of doing real work :).

What a bad year so far for Sveta, tennis-wise. But I still love her, the person (well, what we know from here, of course ).

In general i have the feeling that the speed and power players have is really developed. Most of the players even out of top 200 has a really powerfull baseline game. The point is that most of the time they cannot do anything else than just hitting from the baseline.

Well i saw a good Belgian junior who is still 15 years old and won a match. I was also impressed by the power and strong baselinegame from Karen Barbat. (Just too much faults.)

Tomorrow Belgian day in Torhout with again some Belgian juniors, i'm really looking forward to it :)

Really surprised by Clijsters' defeat today against that spanish qualifier girl.I admit I didn't even know her :o This just shows the tour is quite even nowadays, all top players can lose to very low ranked players on a bad day,not just Sveta.Lower ranked players are dagerous and you can't take any match for granted, but this is something that SKF know very well.I hope to catch some of Beatriz on tv or stream to see how she plays.

French Open - Navratilova to travel despite cancer

Martina Navratilova has said she will commentate at this year's French Open while undergoing radiation treatment for breast cancer.

The 53-year-old, one of the greats of women's tennis, said that she felt great physically and did not expect her six-week radiation therapy in Paris during next month's French Open to get in the way of prior commitments.

"My life has not changed other than I have to be in one place for six weeks to sit through radiation," she said.

"I still play hockey, I am playing tennis this weekend and I'll be commentating for the Tennis Channel during the French Open and Wimbledon."

Navratilova, who won 18 Grand Slam singles titles before retiring from the game in 2006, revealed this week that she was diagnosed with a non-invasive form of breast cancer in February and is expected to make a full recovery.

She had wanted to keep the news quiet but later realized she could help others by going public and raising awareness that early detection can help save lives.

Navratilova, a health and fitness ambassador for AARP, a non-profit organization that helps people over 50 improve the quality of their lives, will remain active and plans to climb Mount Kilimanjaro in Africa this December.

Czech-born Navratilova, who became a US. citizen in 1981, said talking about the disease had been emotionally taxing however.

"It's not like promoting a tennis match ... it's interviews talking about breast cancer that is happening in my body," she said. "It's been very difficult but I am happy I can spread the word and hopefully help save some lives with this awareness."

A winner of six straight Wimbledon titles from 1982 to 1987, Navratilova also said the tennis season, which stretches across most of the yearly calendar, must be shortened to help protect players from injury.

She referred specifically to 23-year-old Rafael Nadal of Spain, who was unable to defend his Wimbledon crown last year because of tendinitis in his knee, as an example.

"Look at Nadal. He is a guy in his prime physically and he can't handle it," said Navratilova.

"Players are taxed so much because there is there is so much demand for their time. but most of all we are travelling more, playing on hard surfaces and the season is too long and needs to be shortened."

The flight thing better be solved before Madrid tournament :p I hate to be so selfish when there's a problem of such proportions, but I better see Sveta playing in Madrid in may,I've been saving money only to be able to go and see her and I'm really looking forward to it,I don't even want to think event gets cancelled or Sveta doesn't make it because of the flights problem.

Oh and finally some good tennis news for me.Thanks to Vera,I think today I'll watch again a WTA final,I have not been bothered to watch one in a long, long time.I have to admit since Sveta played her match vs Bartoli in Miami,I have not watched a single match.Ok,it's true I've been very busy but there's also a big disinterest in it from me.I'm finding this 2010 no only bad for Sveta, but terribly dull in general,so boring...So gooo Vera today! Give me some happy news, please :D

I've been following the news about the volcano, and I wondered if any of you were personally affected. Obama had to scrap going to Poland for the funeral; he sent the ambassador (who was already there) instead. Better safe than sorry.

Yes,the site used to be more up to date in the past. But maybe the people that work on it don't have that much time nowadays.I myself have been updating a lot less her spanish blog because of lack of time (well and also because with only bad news some days I don't feel like telling about it  ),maybe it's the same thing for unofficial site.

At least now we have a lot more other ways to be updated on her,it wasn't the case when the site started,i think it was the only one to get any info on Sveta ;)

Hi Sergey :wavey:

How have you been? It's nice to read you again :D
Yes,it's sad Russia lost at Fed Cup  I believe if some other player had shown up,the russians would have won.I'm still wondering why Nadia or Kirilenko declined to play  All the others had good reasosn not to go (playing the following week as Sveta or Safina,or unfortunately injured like Alisa,Nastya,Sharapova,Chakvetadze). It's sad with so many players into top 100,Russia could only find 3 players to play!

Hi Вероника! :wavey:

I'm fine, thanks. I hope you are well.

Yes, an unexpected situation turned out in the national team.
But so it came together.
Agreed.
If we had another one of these girls all have turned out differently I think.
Nadya their problems were.
In general, here's a quote from an interview Tarpishchev (I know that we understand in Russian, so that the transfer will not)) But if need be - I can try to translate)) ) :

It is the way interesting interview Shamil Tarpishchev

Here, in general such cases.
Well, about Maria Kirilenko Tarpishchev little mistake, saying that it will play in Stuttgart.
No, it does not play Maria, but she has already switched to the dirt courts, has played in Marbella and Barcelona.

But all this is the case the past few days.

Now you have to do so and to work in the sense that this no longer happened.

thanks,I finally read the interview.I found it interesting to read,to know a bit better how things work in the russian team.I don't really like him (Tarpishev) since he said the things he said about Sveta, that upset and disappointed Sveta a lot,but it's interesting to read his insight. He really didn't have much choice.Which leads me to think once this generation of players retire, only with Nastya and Alisa on the horizon, the moment one of them gets injured or can't compete as it has happened this time,Russia will be in big trouble to win the ties.

Actually thinking about it yet do not want to .... can not even go)

However, Tarpishchev rights, the future must take care in advance.
And if we do not do and to celebrate now, then later may not be all that bright.

And by the way I hope and believe that we'll have a few strong young tennis players in the next year or two.

well Russia has a new rising player that revealed herself this past week,Lapushchenkova.I don't know how old she is though.I watched the first set of her SF and she has some good game,it's too bad she got a nervous and coudn't handle and capitalize her lead, but that was probably due to the fact that she's not used to playing matchs of such level yet.

Yes, Anna was the opening of the tournament in Stuttgart.
Anna 23.
I saw Anna's first play and I was very pleased. Anna is a good game, looked a few matches, she plays a very interesting, cleverly, is not afraid to attack, she mighty blows, great and powerful first serve. Above the second feed is the problem, there are problems in engineering, I think, so she has so many double, but I think in the future work of the technique it can with his coach correct.
By the way it helps Alexei Ageev - he sparring partner Vera Zvonareva.
I do not know how things are now there, Alex goes entirely to the work coach and will work with Anya, or will also assist in faith.
While I think that it is impossible to combine. You need to be or there or there.
Most likely Alex will stay with Anya and the fruits of this can already be seen working smoothly. Although there thank you very much to say and those who had worked and helped Anna.

At one time, Anne is very helpful deceased Larisa Preobrazhenskaya (the first coach Anna Kournikova).

Yeah your dogs are beautiful!

Sigh I'm receiving my mid-year results tomorrow and i'm really terrified. I work so hard every day and put in my best effort but i am still scared out of my wits. Can you wiser adults give me some advice? Not to brag but, I am the top student in a very prestigious school and have been for the past 3 and a half years. However, I know I am going to lose one day and I don't know how to deal with it. How do i deal with peer pressure that is such a huge part of school? How do i face people if i do badly? People always expect me to be the best and all but they fail to see how hard i work and take it for granted. How should i live my life?

Света_мой_№1
May 20th, 2010, 04:39 PM
thanks,

about your problem I just a adult for a few years so I think other people can give better advise. its hard to live with a pressure like that for sure. the only thing I can say is that you should not do it for them but for yourself. they dont have to live with the results your getting. you should not really care what they think and I know its easier said then done. You should not think about how to face those people you should just try the best you can and if that didnt work you can at least say you tried as hard as you could. if you dont do that you will regret it and if you do and it doesnt work out then it was just to hard for you and that is no shame.

think this is all I could come up with.

xxx and best of luck

Svetlana)))
May 21st, 2010, 11:16 AM
Thanks for your advice. Just thought I'd give an update. I received my results and I know myself really well. I knew it wasn't up to my expectations. I came in 2nd in the class and lost to a number outside my class. I'm rather disappointed and to a certain extent, mortified. I really work hard and i just hope to work even harder the next semester.

Also I'd like to share that I was not a kind person before. However, I'm really trying my best not to be mean and put myself in others' shoes. But there are many who like to remind me of my past. How should i deal with them? (Gosh i really seem like a disturbed and troubled kid)

Анна
May 21st, 2010, 12:06 PM
It really sounds like you put a lot of pressure on yourself to be perfect in your grades, to be the best. Maybe this is cultural, where you are? I think you really have to take Mel's advice and think about who you are doing this for-yourself, your parents, others in your class? At the end of the day, you're the one who lives with your marks and you're the one who matters. I know most of us would be over the moon to get first or second in our class, but I'd bet that we didn't have the work ethic you have. My mother used to tell me that if I did my best, I should hold my head up proudly, and that's what I tell my kids (yes, I've been an adult for a long time ;)). So, you did the best you could, which was still pretty awesome.

I'd be willing to bet that all of us here did things we're not proud of when we were young(er), and were even mean and selfish at times. Heck, we still make mistakes . That's part of growing up. If someone likes to remind you of things you did in the past, say, "Why bring that up now?" and walk away. Seriously, don't let them get to you or create a reaction, and they'll stop. And find friends who don't care about the past, only about now.

I missed that question too, I can't even remember this guy  When did he play?

He still played for USSR as I remember, end of the eighties, start of the nineties,at the time of Zvereva and Larisa ;) I remember him because he was coached by a woman, which was quite unusual for an ATP player,at least commentators liked to always point that out.

He's now Vesnina's coach.Saw him in Madrid and has changed a looooot (doesn't have as much hair and has more kilos :p ),but most of them have,I guess ;)

Oh, it's pretty simple. Some people just have one thing in their minds all the time and everything brings sex to thier minds. So why not Sveta? I guess it's a case for most women players (just take a look at the pics sections and all the crotch close ups). And Kuznetsova's name is for the "s" letter.

Too bad Na Li took the title in Birmingham  I would have prefered Sharapova to win it.

It was another smart move by Sharapova to play there. It was her 2nd final this year and I guess playing in such small tournaments will help her a lot to back to her tennis from pre-health problems era. So she'll get more confidence in her game and she plays much better tennis than last year (her match against Henin from Paris was really good). And BTW Birmingham had pretty weak draw in comparison to Eastbourne.

Way off topic, but when you use translit to write in Cyrillic characters, can you type in English and have it translate itself into Russian? For example, can I type "I am tall" just like that and have it come out in Russian? I'm using livemocha's lessons and getting nowhere with the writing exercises. It wants me to submit a writing sample, and that would take forever, to keep going back and looking for the right word and its spelling

Oh, and I'm using the free version of livemocha-has anyone used it, and do you recommend it?

I'll have a look at livemocha site when I have a little time, looks interesting.

Well I think what you are asking is more like an online translation than a transliteration.I suppose there are some sites for translation on line but I wouldn't recommend such translations, they are usually very bad and don't make much sense.Sites like translit.ru take a lot of time to write, that is true but you can write more what you want to say than what the translation generated by a machine says. The other option of course would be to have a russian keyboard, but I guess you'll have more difficulty finding one outside of Russia.

You don't have to get russian keyboard to write in Russian. You can do it on a average keyboard too. I remember people from Russia were able to write in cyrlica on the same keyboard I was using. They put a smal stickers on each letter with Russian ones. The thing is I cannot tell how they did it ;) I guess there is a special code that can redirect from latin letters on the keyboard to Russian ones. Ask some IT guy/girl if you know one about how to do that.
The other thing I've noticed was that they were also writing in Russian while using Latin letters. They have just using the phonetical writing.

Mel, thank you :). You put so much into this site and the Sveta projects; you must be the most computer-literate of all of us and everything you make looks great :). I am sure we will like it, and Sveta will love it. What a surprise for her after this pants week.

It would seem that livemocha wants me to pay $100 for Russian lessons, at least to get the tutoring features. So now I've found russianlessons.net, which is free but also has audio. It also has a Cyrillic typing feature ;). Son of a biscuit, this is a tough language! If you speak Polish, Bart, then Russian must be somewhat related (my guess). Maybe Serbian as well.

No wonder our schools here emphasize Spanish. Besides having a lot of Spanish speaking people here, it's the same alphabet, similar grammar, and very recognizable. You can get the grasp of it in a semester ;).

 for the first sentence.I know ;) I think czech too.Where I work now there's a czech girl,I often hear her on the phone talking czech and I can get some words despite the fact I've never learned czech :eek:There's also a Polish girl and apparently the czech and the polish girl can understand each other in their respective languages or this is what they say.I find this amazing and fascinating at the same time.

But then again when I was to Italy I could understand many things despite not having studied italian ever, also because it's close to spanish and a bit to french and catalan too.So knowing one of the related languages helps a lot,I think. Not in grammar because every language has its own special rules and particularities, but with words.

If you speak Polish, Bart, then Russian must be somewhat related (my guess). Maybe Serbian as well.

Yes, that true. We are all Slavs. There are many similarities but different grammar and alphabets. Actually Ukrainian is a mix of Polish and Russian but almost any Ukrainian I know would deny it
Cursing is quite similiar. In Polish we have many "bad words" from Russian...

All true. If you know German you can actually be able to communicate in whole Western Europe. The same with Scnadinavia. Maybe with the exception of Finnish which is related to Hungarian. How crazy is that?
