Ana has been named Women's Tennis Player of the Year 2008 by the International Sports Press Association (AIPS), the organisation that is made up of the world's leading sports writers.

LONDON, July 7, 2008 - It was a weekend of double glory for Rafael Nadal.

As well as being crowned Wimbledon Champion 2008 after one of the most exciting finals in tennis history, the Spanish supremo also received the Men’s Tennis Player of the Year 2008 award, as voted for by the International Sports Press Association (AIPS). On picking up the trophy, Nadal commented: “Thank you very much for this award”.

There were also honours for Ana Ivanovic, who scooped Women’s Player of the Year, which made up for her early Wimbledon exit. On receiving the award, the World No.1 said: “I feel very honoured to receive this award and the recognition by the International Sports Press Association.”

This year’s award for Men’s Contribution to the Game of Tennis went to Boris Becker. The German tennis legend commented: “It is always good to receive an award”, before dashing back to complete his role on the commentary team for the BBC.

The World Tennis Awards are part of the World Sport Awards which are decided annually by votes cast from the 9000-strong AIPS membership from over 150 countries across the world.

Why do they choose so early with many important tourneys still to be played?

I can never get the idea of this award. I mean why can't they just wait till the end of the year to decide who deserve this award the most? :tape:

Why her? She's done no more than what Maria has done.

Why do they choose so early with many important tourneys still to be played? :shrug:Probably because in majority of most popular sports (all team sports) season is finished before summer pause, so they dont want to wait tennis players to finish their calender year and finished all they activities (including voting for tennis player of the year) now in july. But this also means that they counted ATP and WTA players achivments from last 1/3 of 2007 season (including USO/07 and YEC/07).

I'm sure that Ivanovic and Sharapova recive almost all votes (if Serena won this Wimbledon she will be also contender, but she lose) and Ana obviously have more votes.

Sharapova: W, 4th rnd, 2nd rnd

Ana: F, W, 3rd rnd

Not surprising whom they will choose.

Sharapova: W, 4th rnd, 2nd rnd

Ana: F, W, 3rd rnd

Not surprising whom they will choose.

But if it's done at this time of year then they'd have to include last years US open and YEC to make it a full year. Even though it shouldn't make a difference as Maria's US open was awful

Most prestiguos is still official WTA award at end of season and winner of USO (especialy if that will be Ana, Maria or Williamsx2) will be strong favorite - but OG Gold, YEC wins and #1 at end of year will be also very relevant for tight 2008 "Player of the year" batle (in ATP only Djokovic with USO title and good OG and YEC result have chances to overtake Nadal).

Talking about "official" WTA Year Ending awards for most improved player i think currently lead Radwanska, Safina and Azarenka and for newcomer right now i give best chances to Cornet, Wozniacki and Cibulkova (or for Suarez-Navaro, Kvitova and Pavlyuchenkova if they need "total newcomer"). For comeback of the year current leaders (IMO) is Zheng, Tanasugarn and Zvonareva. For doubles team same thing like for singles MVP - before USO and OG is too early for predictions, but in doubles competition i think OG Gold should be most relevant.

true, they should call the award 'Tennis Player of the (first half of) year 2008' instead :tape:

Ana deserves it for her year so far.
Then Maria
Then Serena
Then Venus.

Its early days though :)

well unfortunately it isn't wtatour = GS, Maria has other two titles as well and had a great match-winning streak but oh well

Maria = Tier I Doha, Tier II Amelia Island
Ana = Super Tier I Indian Wells

Ana's slam results are better than Maria's.

But I don't know why they give awards like these out under the guise of "2008" when the year is half over.

Aren't they a bit premature? We are barely into the seventh month of the year? They should make their picks in November. However, I do think Nadal deserves it. Let us see what Ana does at USO before we crown her.

They didn't considered Henin?

Henin
US Open winner, YEC winner, AO QFs and didn't play RG.
Toronto and Zurich Tiers I , Stuggart and Antwerp Tiers II .
6 Titles. Is 4-2 against the competition

Ivanovic
US Open round of 16, YEC SFs, AO finalist and RG winner.
Indian Wells Tier I and Luzembourg Tier II .
3 Titles. Is 0-4 against the competition.

Sharapova
US Open 3rd round, YEC finalist, AO winner and RG round of 16.
San Diego and Doha Tier I and Amelia Island Tier II.
4 Titles. Is 3-2 against the competition.

Serena
US Open QFs, YEC Round Robin, AO QFs and RG 3rd round.
Miami and Charleston Tier I and Bangalore Tier II.
3 Titles. Is 2-1 against the competition.

How is Ivanovic winning this?

^^ H2H is a totally irrelevant stat for this award. As for Henin, she's retired and out of competition. I also have a feeling that 2008 results weigh in more than 2007 results for this award, partly because it's a 2008 award and partly because recent achievements are more relevant than not so recent ones...

Grand Slams shouldn't be the only factor to come up with when they name a player the best of an year, in my opinion. :)

Ana is only out of this 4 which reach more than one slam final in last 12 months... actualy she is only out of this 4 which reach more than one SF in last 12 months!!! Also except her RG win and AO final she have some other good results like tier-I and tier-II titles. Serena is "slamless" and have only one GS final and Henin in 2008 miss 2 slams and (except at tier-II) not reach any semifinal, so perfect last 1/3 of 2007 with USO and YEC wins is not enough. Maria 2nd best GS result in last 12 months is RG 4th round. She have one tier-I title more, but one tier-II title less than Ana - so that is not enough to compensate Ivanovic GS advantage. So from this July-2008 point of view Ana is most logical choice.

Dumb. They should give out the award in 2009...that's how most awards work. VERY stupid, especially in an Olympic year. Not saying they aren't deserving, I'd say the same thing if Venus won.

They have a real shot of shooting themselves in the foot if Ana has bad results for the rest of the year. I mean the there's still the USOPEN and the OLYMPICS not to mention the championships.
