She used to be a decent tennis player back in the 70s/80s. Won or was a finalist at FO. But ever since she's been a sports anchor for the BBC friends from the UK tell me she's kind of an icon in the UK ? Is that true?

Well...she is quite popular as a sport commentator but as a tennis player not at all... She can be funny...I like her jokes on her own account when she tells about how she hardly won few games against some players that she has played in the past. Between the lines she tells how shi***y tennis player she was :D ....

I think she is being rather modest. She made as high as 3 in the world, won a Slam, was a semifnalist in two others and won well over a dozen singles titles. I also think has victories over every major player she faced and can tell her grandkids toward the end of her career, she loss a tight match against a young Steffi Graf in her last Wimbledon.
She did have the height hinderance (she is only 5-3) but wasn't a bad mover on court.

So Sue Barker you weren't that crappy a player girlfriend!!!

Love Sue :hearts: icon indeed. She won the French too, so she's no slouch as a tennis player.

They showed a tape of her winning the French a while back, can't remember what it was on, and she was absolutely mortified.

I really really like Sue

Sue is a Wimbledon legend. And winning the French Open is a great accomplishment. Its before my time but she can't have been that bad a player surely?

she has very successfuly branched from ex tennis player to very respected presenter. she present a sports quiz called (shit i cant remember the name lol) and has also branched out covering all sorts of sports such as horse racing, track and field and will be 1 of the main presenters of the olympics. shes sweet and very endearing and is now the sort of face of wimbledon. she has done very well for herself since she quit tennis and i think its all down to her being down to earth and very likeable!

rock on sue!

She's a very good broadcaster/presenter and she is insanely likeable!

There's something quite sexy about her in a refined/homely/she's still got it kind of a way. I think there's something sexy about a woman with a really nice laugh and a good sense of humour.

I would rather hear Sue Barker then someone like Mary Carillo or Pam Shriver. At least Sue WON a grand slam singles title.

Not to take anything from Barker but had Shriver been seeded 1st at USO/Wimbledon with Navratilova, Evert, Austin, Mandlikova all absent she would have won her Slam too.

Just checked. The draw for RG 1976 is equivalent to modern day Tier II.
The biggest names in the draw were Turnbull, Barker, Masthoof, Tomanova, Jausovec, Ruzici, May-Teacher and 50 years old Bueno.

She was number 3 behind Chris and Martina at one point so she did do more than just win that RG. She is more well known as a presenter though and definitely a household name.

"Icon" is too strong a term. Barker isn't held in as high a regard for her tennis as Virginia Wade or Ann Jones because ... she didn't win at Wimbledon. I realise both of those two did more, but for example you always hear how Wade was the last British woman to win Wimbledon but rarely is it pointed out that Barker was the last to win the French (mind you Barker isn't a Tracy Austin-esque "When I won..." kind of person).

Britain is TERRIBLE for this, the bias towards Wimbledon over everything else is mindblowing. I never felt Seles pre-stabbing quite had the same reputation here as Graf because ... Steffi always won here. One time winners like Novotna and Conchita are enshrined in Wimbledon legend and as such seem to resonate more here than the Majolis or Myskinas of this world. Maybe it's natural because in this country tennis only comes alive in the general public's mind for a month, but for the British it always feels like Wimbledon or nothing.

Even Laura Robson, I saw the next day after her win they said only 4 wimbledon girls winners had gone on to take the wimbledon ladies title - who gives a frack about Wimbledon? I'd rather she won the Aussie once than lose in the Wimbledon final 3 times, but that's not the point of reference. It's not "can she be top 10" or "can she be #1 in the world?", it's "can she win Wimbledon?", it's the holy grail.

So because of that rabid all-or-nothing type of reaction we seem to have here I wouldn't say she was an icon, at least not for her tennis - she's more of an icon in the way Des Lynam was, as a presenter.

Did anyone see during coverage of the Stella Artois when Sue was drooling over the naked centrefold of a male player? It was so funny, and that's what makes her so likeable- she's so down to earth and funny and self-deprecating :)

Although she is now more recognised as a TV presenter she was a very good tennis player in her day although she only remained right near the top for a couple of years. You don't make the top 5 unless you are a player of a certain talent.

Her 1976 RG victory is hard to put into context since it was at a time most of the leading players in the world weren't there and she was the highest ranked player in the draw at around #15 or 16.

I was gutted when she lost in the semis at Wimby in 1977 - the title was hers for the taking. At the beginning of the tournament based on results during the first half of the year she could have been regarded as almost the next best player to Chris Evert - continually improving and pushing Chris to 3 sets when they played.

9 times out of 10 she would have beaten Betty Stove but IMO the match scheduling played a significant role. Chris and Virginia Wade played their semi first where Virginia caused a stunning upset so when Sue came onto court having expected to face Evert in the final if she won, and in all honesty wouldn't really have thought she could lift the title - the prospect dangled tantalisingly since she had beaten Virginia a couple of times earlier that year. The nerves got to her and she just fell short.

This defeat seemed to get to her - she lost to an "unknown"- Tracy Austin! - at USO and was never the same player again. An injury saw her fall quickly down the rankings and although she fleetingly climbed back to the top 10 the hunger just wasn't there.

Hewr forehand was the biggest in the women's game at the time.

As others have said, Sue Barker is a huge star here in the UK, but as a presenter, not a tennis player. As far as I am aware she was a very good player at one time, but she is now definitely known as a presenter first and tennis player second.

Sue Barker is hugely liked. She's so "one of us". Not pretentious - she deprecates herself as a player - and likes a laugh. She's very good as a presenter. A few of us also remember that forehand as a player.

But I just don't think of her as a star. I always think of a star as someone held in awe. I think she'd laugh at the suggestion and would hate to be thought as such. I think being liked and being a normal person with a sense of humour is what she herself values the most.

Yup, she has signed her contract until 2012 and thank goodness for that. Last year, Martina Navratilova and Billie Jean King were being interviewed by Sue in her cool presenters booth over the outside courts at Wimbeldon and Martina said live on air that she had heard that the BBC were thinking of replacing Sue with a younger presenter and that she was appalled. Billie Jean was equally distraught and said that the BBC needed someone at the helm who had been there and knew what they were talking about and that she loved Sue.

Sue was close to tears, to hear two legends as truly iconic and huge as Billie Jean King and Martina Navratilova speak for her in such a way must have been overwhelming and yet, modest as ever, she did not add to it but simply attempted to change the subject with a slight frog in her throat. Love Sue, and love her on-court interviews on Finals Day.

Finally in regards to the French Open win, she has said in an interview that her biggest regret about that tournament was that she did not beat Chris Evert during it and that at the end of the day, you can only beat the person on the other side of the net. She had won three clay tournaments leading up to RG and so therefore was a worthy winner and is a fine champion. Here's a link to the article.
