About the Players
Taking home her 31st career title in Charleston at the end of April, Serena Williams, will highlight the list of elite players to compete at this year’s East West Bank Classic. The eight-time Grand Slam champion, and former No. 1 ranked player in the world, started off 2008 winning two titles; at Banaglore and Miami, both in March. In Miami, she defeated world No. 1-ranked Justin Henin, and is now 10-10 lifetime against world No. 1s. 2007 was an incredible comeback year for Williams after injuries in 2006, earning singles titles at the Australian Open and Miami.
Venus Williams, current world No. 9, and a six-time Grand Slam champion, won three titles in 2007; Memphis, Wimbledon and Seoul. Her win at Wimbledon was her sixth Grand Slam title, and the fourth overall at Wimbledon (2007, 2005, 2001 and 2000). She has 36 career titles to her name, and both she and her sister Serena were both raised in Compton, Calif., just a few miles from The Home Depot Center in Carson.
No. 5 Svetlana Kuznetsova will compete at this year’s tournament for the first time since 2005. With nine career titles and one Grand Slam win in 2004 at the US Open, Kuznetsova started 2008 off strong, as the runner up at Dubai in February, and at Indian Wells in March. In 2007, she won at New Haven, and in 2006, she won at Miami, Bali and Beijing.
Jelena Jankovic, currently ranked No.4 on the Sony Ericsson WTA Tour, will play in the East West Bank Classic for her third straight year. In 2006, she was the runner up, beating Serena Williams en route to the finals, eventually losing to Elena Dementieva in the championship match. 2007 was Jankovic’s breakthrough season, earning her first top 10 finish, and winning four titles (Auckland, Charleston, Rome and Birmingham). She has started off 2008 strong, reaching the semifinals at the Australian Open, Dubai and Indian Wells, and the finals at Miami.
Playing in the East West Bank Classic for the fifth straight year, Daniela Hantuchova, has earned respect at The Home Depot Center, competing each year since the tournament opened in Carson and consistently finishing well. Hantuchova holds three career titles, and captured two last year at Indian Wells and Linz. This year, she reached the semifinals at the Australian Open – her best Grand Slam finish to date – and also had consecutive quarterfinal finishes at Paris (Indoors), Antwerp and Indian Wells.
Nicole Vaidisova had an outstanding season on the Sony Ericsson WTA Tour in 2007, highlighted by two Grand Slam quarterfinals finishes at Roland Garros and Wimbledon, and her second Grand Slam semifinals appearance at the Australian Open. Vaidisova, who reached the quarterfinals or better at 10 of her 14 Tour events in 2007, hails from Prague, Czech Republic and is currently No. 17 in the world.
