With this field it's better than her other Tier IV's.

Bravo Agie Radwańska fan! Bravo for you vigilance. You should be investigator. That's the real fan, always insatiate ;)

Yep but second tourney in Dubai in 2007 wasn't WTA Tour competition. I don't think any WTA Tour tourney have 30th-ranked player as 1st seed in the draw. Correct me if I'm wrong but it was ITF Circuit challanger. I remember photos with winner Maria and runner-up lil Rodina around the sheiks. As we know Makiri won four titles and none of them was Dubai one. So if we mean WTA tournaments seedings it's first time that our sweetie is no.1 :)

Sadly Maria wont have much of a chance to practice she's sick

It would have been nice the three weeks practice but Maria is still not here because she is ill and still at home in Moscow. If we are lucky, we can practice one week but I am afraid it will be even less

This is worrying. Masha has nearly 500 points to defend over the next 2months. Hopefully it is nothing serious. But she really needs some Hard Court practice.

Nikkiri
Jul 11th, 2008, 12:42 PM
Well it doesn't sound too bad, but getting better with some rest is most important.

If she's able to get a week of practice and then go deep in Portoroz then she should be fine.

The only names on the entry list that worry me are Wozniacki and Srebotnik - who's playing at home. And both of them could be in the other half of the draw. Mind you, if she makes it to the weekend, she'll have to hurry to Toronto for the big Tier I the following week.

DAVAJ MKirilenko
Jul 11th, 2008, 04:38 PM
I should think it's not all that bad, but I hope she can start soon again. Still I don't understand it to play Portoroz.
Los Angeles is a stronger tournament and also closer to Montreal.
If she makes the final of Portoroz she can get a big jetlag again which won't help for Montreal.

I hope she will be fine.

That for sure won't do her good. If she won't recover soon, she better be out quickly in Portoroz. Not much points to win and Montreal is way more important.
I really hope our girl will be fine soon. She really can do well in the hardcourt season.

True, but Van Harpen has said quite clearly that he wants Masha playing as much on clay as possible. He believes that clay or slower Hard Courts will become her best surface. I'm not sure but the guy is a VERY EXPERIENCED coach.

Not surprisingly she's not looking 100% but I'm not too worried about this week. Not too many points to defend and if she does go out early that gives her more time to get to Canada.

Well I can believe that is true and you have to accept she will live her own life. I've just remembered this quote:

Maria : My first time in Slovenia

Hey everyone !

I have been at home for 10 days. I was with my family and very happy, had a nice time at home. I was a little bit sick but now, everything is fine ! I practiced few time at home, but not much.

Here in Portoroz, the weather is very hot. I am going to play tomorrow very late, so it is not going to effect me this hot weather. It’s my first time in Slovenia and I like very much to be here. I have a nice view on the sea from my room. The tennis stadium is really nice and the hotel too.

Thank you for all your messages. I’ll talk to you soon !

I don't even know vs whom did our Sweetie play but the result tells that it wasn't tough effort. The opponent, whoever she was, propably had felt so little in front of Makiri's beauty and hadn't want the match lasted for longer time. The power of natural beauty won once again.

Looking at the profile, Vinci has been having a bad time lately, but she was ranked as high as 37 two years ago and 12 in doubles, so she is certainly not useless.

Round 1 press conference

Maria, how do you think the match went ?
After Wimbledon I was a bit sick, I ate something bad and I was in bed for ten days. It was terrible. And then, I had only a one-week preparation, and I did not know if I would be fit so I was a little bit nervous. I think the match went quite quickly, it was 6-1, 6-1, and I just tried to stay concentrated. I concentrated on each point and avoided stupid mistakes, so I am happy actually.

You didn’t sweat much today. Do you expect to have a more difficult job against probably Roberty Vinci in the second round encounter ?Well, I think each match is going to get more and more difficult. Tomorrow I will get some rest and try to concentrate on my next match.

How about yesterday, the girls had quite some problems wih the harsh weather. Do you feel find playing in windy conditions and playing evening matches ?For me, at this tournament it is better to play evening matches, because it’s not hot – it is even a bit cold, but for me it is better this way. As for the wind, I like to play in the wind. At the Estoril Open, it was so windy it was unbelievable, but I managed to play there so I guess I know how to handle this.

Injury timeout was for cramps

Russian asked for a medical time out: “I started feeling some cramps in my legs, but fortunately it's OK. This is because I was sick a couple of weeks ago and I did not practice much in the fitness room lately, but I am trying to catch up in these days, also climbing up the stairs at the stadium and so on.”

Masha is scheduled to play at 1900hrs. However, last night she started about half an hour early. I wonder if the match will start straight after Wozniacki/Dushevina as you would normally expect?

Maria's heart seems to be in the right place as she fought her way back from 2-5 3rd set to level the match at 5-5 after facing 6 match points. I can only think of 1 match, however, in which she actually fought back and won : the match against Vesnina earlier this year in which Vesnina was up 40-0 when serving for the match.

Unfortunately Maria's game and head don't seem to be in the right place. Maria won only 25% (7/28) of points on her 2nd serve and had 7 double faults. Errani won 55% (15/27) of her 2nd serve points. Maris converted only 27% (3/11) of her break points. Maria was only able to save 46% (6/13) of break points she faced. Maria got only 59% (46/78) of her 1st serves in. These stats are from 5-6 30-40 2nd set (my scoreboard didn't give any more updates after that, I'm assuming that Maria was broken on that point for Maria's break point saving %).

Here's a list of missed opportunities for Maria: up 30-0 on her serve at 0-0 1st set but broken, had game point at 40-30 at 0-2 1st set but broken, was up 40-15 and Ad Maria at 0-3 1st set (1 bp was a 2nd serve) but failed to break, was up 2-1 30-0 2nd set and had Ad Maria but was broken, had 2 bps at 2-2 40-15 2nd set (2 2nd serves) but failed to break), and up 30-15 at 5-6 2nd set but broken.

The 2-1 2nd set game seems pivotal. I think if Maria had held there she would have gone on to win the 2nd set and I would have liked her chances in the 3rd set.
