2. Lucie Šafářová preview
-------------------------

Lucie decided to prepare for Wimbledon by playing a clay-court WTA-tournament at Barcelona. She beat #541-ranked Leticia Costas 6-2 6-1, and struggled past the #396-ranked Selesian, Arantxa Parra Santonja, 7-5 4-6 6-3.

In the quarter-finals of Barcelona, Lucie was trailing María José Martínez Sánchez 2-6 1-4 when she retired with a right-hamstring injury. She also struggled with shoulder-problems at Barcelona, pulling out of the doubles with Maria Kirilenko. She cited a left-shoulder injury for her withdrawal from 's-Hertogenbosch.

So Lucie goes into Wimbledon with two major injuries, and hence very low expectations - especially as she has a tough first-round opponent.

2.1 First round
---------------

Lucie beat Emilie Loit 6-0 7-5 in their only previous meeting: 2r Miami 2007. But that result isn't very relevant now, as they are both doing much worse in 2008 than they did in 2007.

Loit has a 6:14 record for 2008 so far. She lost 10 matches in a row from September 2007 to March 2008, and her results have been unremarkable since: highlighted by a third-round appearance at the French Open, in which she extended 10th seed Patty Schnyder to 7-6 5-7 6-2.

Loit had a much worse Barcelona than Lucie did, losing in the first round 6-7 6-4 7-6 to #341-ranked Eloisa Compostizo de Andres. If it wasn't for Lucie's injuries, this would be cause for confidence.

Loit's Wimbledon-record is pretty mediocre, only managing one third-round appearance (in 2003). But she does have one impressive result on grass: at Birmingham 2004, she reached the semi-finals, losing 6-3 5-7 7-5 to Tatiana Golovin, who in turn extended Maria Sharapova to three sets in the final. And Loit looked impressive on grass as I watched her at that tournament: she has quite a classical style, with sliced backhands and volleys and junk.

It's a tough match to call; I am pessimistic because of Lucie's injuries, and I guess the deciding-factor will be how her left shoulder feels on Tuesday.

2.2 Second round
----------------

Shahar Pe'er leads Lucie 2:1 head to head, and Shahar's two wins were in 2007; Lucie's win was a 6-2 6-1 thrashing at Bastad 2004.

Shahar is in a pretty bad slump herself at the moment. After a decent start to 2008 with semi-finals on the Gold Coast and at Memphis, she goes into Wimbledon on a 5-match losing-streak.

British wild card Katie O'Brien will fancy her chances against Shahar in the first round. Katie beat Alla Kudryavtseva 6-0 3-6 7-6(2) at Birmingham, and was unlucky not to add the scalp of Yaroslava Shvedova in the second round (7-5 1-6 7-5).

Katie isn't used to playing at this level week in, week out, and a healthy Lucie would beat her comfortably (they've never played each other), but with Lucie's injuries liable to flare up again, and the crowd behind Katie, who knows what might happen?

This is as far ahead as I wish to look, not knowing if Lucie's injuries are going to hold up.

1. First-round scoreboard-report: Šafářová v Loit (Tuesday 24th June)
-------------------------------------------------

- Lucie Šafářová [EF] lt. Emilie Loit, 3-6 6-7 (4/7)

Lucie struggled throughout the match, and I'm actually quite proud of her that she hung tough to get such a respectable scoreline, given her recent injuries.

Loit broke for *3-1, and had six break-points for *5-1, but Lucie held on her first game-point, and broke back for *3-4. But Loit broke again and served out the first set 6-3 - despite Lucie having a break-point in the last game.

The second set was extremely tight. Lucie's first two service-games featured a total of 7 deuces, with Loit converting 2 of 8 break-points to lead *3-0.

But far from heading for a bagel, Lucie fought off that deficit and *2-4, and had Loit serving to stay in the second set at 4-5 and 5-6. Lucie had at least two set-points at 6-5*, but Loit held on, and Lucie never recovered from an early deficit in the tiebreak.

Lucie serving 1-3: 0/15. 15/15. 40/15. Held.
Loit serving 3-2: 15/0. 15/40. The scoreboard cruelly said that Lucie had broken for 3-3, then reverted to 40/40. Ad Loit (BP). Broken.

Lucie serving 2-4: 30/15... held.
Loit serving 4-3: 15/15. 15/30. 30/40. 40/40. Ad Loit. Deuce #2. Ad Lucie (BP). Broken.

Tremendous fightback by Lucie. Now the score looks as close as all those deuces would imply. And the pressure's on Loit now, as she has lost what looked like a decisive lead.
