I thought I heard earlier today that Tammy Tanasugarn was handed one of the continental wildcards........................although the source wasn't all that great (it was on the radio). Maybe you could pencil it in though?

Probable entries:

Chan
Morigami
Bondarenko
Ruano-Pascual

Reason: All 4 will play both singles and doubles, leaving more vacancies. Galovitz may also complete a couple.
Lisicki could have got a WC but I don't think the German OC would let her go.

I don't see why Tanasugarn should get in when there are higher-ranked Asian players who just missed the cut.

According to my calculation, there are as many as 18 vacant places, and 6 singles spots and 9 in doubles to fill. That means at least 3 ITF entries should play both singles and doubles.

There's no way ITF will grant 2 WC to one country, and I think USA and Austria are unlikely to get them having allreay qualified 3 and 2 players in women singles, and also represented by at least 2 players in other events.
ITF tends to award these places to less-priveleged countries. As of now, TPE is represented in men singles and women doubles, Japan has just one entry in women singles and doubles, Ukraine has 2 in singles and a double team, but Katerina Bondarenko will play doubles with her sister so she can get into the singles as well. Same with Spain: Medina Garrigues will play doubles with Ruano-Pasqual. ITF might ignore her because Spain has a full men's team.
Romania has only one entry in men and one in women.

However, if ITF will like more countries to take part in the tennis tournament, they will have to go further down the list.

As far as I see, the countries at the low end of the top-100 who have no entries yet in the women tournament are Belgium (Yanina Wickmeier), Great Britain (Anne Koethavong) and Canada (Alexandra Wozniak). There's also Germany, but if the Germans didn't change their policy from 4 years ago I don't think they'll send Lisicki to Beijing. If we'll go further down the ranking, the next candidate is Rossana de los Rios of Paraguay, a country which has no entry in any tennis event and belong to an un-privileged part of the world (Argentina and USA are the only countries in the Americas with entries in women's tennis events so far). Croatia (Kostanic) is the next country with no women in the tennis tourney, but they have 4 men. Next in order is Luxembourg (Anne Kremer), but it's allready outside the top-120...
If ITF would like to see another entry from Africa in addition to Cara Black, they'll have to go for Selima Sfar (Tunisia) at #163, and that's a long way down...

nitsansh,

Sorry, but i have some comments about your posts.

Tamarine Tanasugarn: with end of Wimbledon she will be around 40-50, which makes her the best ranked player who didn't qualify to olympics. Enough reason now?

Stefanie Vogt's ranking is also a way down, so why not Selima Sfar? And other African player: Scheepers, who is not much lower than Sfar. And Sfar is doing well at dobules in wimbledon (she has ranking between 50 & 60 in doubles).

Not only Americans and Argentinans, but there is Milagros Sequera(her rank will be around 250 after wimby...so what was that "way down"?), with her saved rank.

Morigami & Ruano-Pascual are unlikely to get, there are already Japanese and Spanish players.....and i doubt financial saving counts for ITF...
K.Bondarenko is the 2nd best ranked who missed the cut, but there are already ukrainans so...

I think Yanina Wickmayer, Rossana De Los Rios may get one.

Doubles entries:

Top-10 ranking:
Huber+Davenport (USA)
Sugiyama+? (JPN)
Peschke+? (CZE)
Stubbs+? (AUS)
Chuang+Chan (TPE)
Azarenka+Govortsova? (BLR)
Safina+Kuznetsova (RUS)

ITF Places:
Austria (Bammer/Paszek?)
ChinaX2
Czech Rep (Vaidisova/Benesova?)
FranceX2 (Mauresmo/Golovin, Razzano/Cornet)
ItalyX2
Poland (Radwanska/Domachowska?)
Russia (Vesnina/Zvonareva)
Serbia (Ivanovic/Jankovic?)
Slovakia (Hantuchova/Cibulkova?)
Spain (Ruano-Pascual/Medina-Garrigues)
Switzerland (Schnyder/Gagliardi)
Ukraine (BondarenkoX2)
USA (WiliamsX2)

9 places remaining.
If Galovitz gets WC in singles, then Romania should get a double team as well (w/Cristea)

The remaining places are anyone's guess... most likely they will go to countries with one entry in singles, and there are about a dozen of them... Argentina, Bulgaria, Denmark, Estonia, Greece, Hungary, India, Israel, Netherlands, New Zealand, Romania, Uzbekistan, Venezuela...

Based on ranking, I think there's good chance for Israel, Hungary, Estonia, Romania, Argentina... all these have a second player in the top 120... next in line may be India, that might also benefit from geographic considerations...

If ITF will opt to give 2 places to one country, then Germany and/or Canada could get them.
There's also possibility that Ukraine will get 2 places, so Korytseva will play singles and K.Bondarenko will play only doubles. It could be the same with Japan - Morigami will play singles and Nakamura doubles with Sugiyama - it's up to Ai and Japan federation who she wants to play with.

nitsansh,

I think Yanina Wickmayer, Rossana De Los Rios may get one.

You shouldn't feel sorry... it's OK to disagree...

About Tanasugarn and Wimbledon... it doesn't count anything. The ranking that counts is that of June 9th, and at that time her ranking was 89. A wimbledon title didn't help to get Sharapova to Athens in 2004, because before the championship she wasn't among the top 4 Russians. Why it should be different for Tammy in 2008?

Also, ranking in doubles count nothing as far as entry for singles, but ranking in singles counts for doubles - entry in doubles is decided by the better of the 2 rankings.

In case you don't know the rules... Stephanie Vogt and Cara Black got the 2 wild cards given by a tripartite commitee... these places are decided by totally different criteria, and ranking is not among them... Black doesn't even have a ranking in singles...

You're right about Sequera... but still the American continent is under-represented in the tournament, even compared to Asia... that could be a strong arguement in favour of Rossana, as well as Wozniak...

If ITF will give geographic considerations absolute considerations and ignore the ranking, then the 6 ITF places in singles should go to Lisicki, Tanasugarn, Wickmayer, Keothavong, Wozniak and De-Los Rios. Next in line are Kostanic, Kremer, and maybe Sfar is the next one.

Giving 6 places to countries with one player means there are less places available for doubles, because the total number of players in each sex must not exceed 86. There are allready 10 players who play only doubles, and that incudes Chan and Sugiyama's partner. If you add Bondarenko and Ruano-Pascual to that list it's 12, which leaves 10 places, and that may not be enough. For any of these players who will play in singles, there will be another vacancy in doubles.
I don't have the composition of some of the double teams, and I can assume that China would like to enter Tian Tian Sun, Czech Republic might opt to enter Uhlirova, Italy for Santangelo, Slovakia for Husarova, Belarus for Poutchek... and that will be in addition to at least 9 players, because according to my calculation there are at least 9 vacancies for double teams.

And BTW... the no. of available places is decided by IOC, and there is no way it could be enlarged... every Olympic sport, with the exception of Athletics and swimming, has a fixed quota of athletes, and can't exceed it by even one athlete.

nitsansh,

"6 final qualification places in the singles event will be allocated by the ITF based on the recognised World Ranking and the continental/NOC representation."
And this doesn't include that the ranking of June 9 counts, but the RANKING counts (so, the ranking now).

Sharapova's last year's fact is totally different, since it would have been against the rules, since no country can get more than 4 singles players. And noone from Thailand is in yet.

About maximum 86: I think ITF will rather give WC to already-singles players a doubles-spot. Your calculation is just simply wrong imo.

Czech Republic won't enter Uhlirova. And Hungary wants a pair other than the two in TOP120 (Szávay with Arn, who has no rank in doubles)

About your Japanese thoughts: Morigami won't play singles. how did you get that info?

Kristoffer
Jun 28th, 2008, 10:33 PM
Since you are a Maths-fan, i try to count:

Let's say they choose 6 non-doubles-players. That would make 56 singles-player.
I add the already known non-singles-players who play doubles*: that makes 73.
After this, only 41 players unknown in doubles event. But 4 of them is sure already in singles (because of two teams, and maximum of 6 players/NOC). That makes 37. 3 are the TOP10's chosen partner(so we have 17 other pairs). Let's say, half** of the remaining places are already in singles. That makes 17(+3). So all in all 93 players.

if Polish entry will be Radwanska/Domachowska, Austrian Paszek/Bammer, Slovakian Hantuchova/Cibulkova, belorussian azarenka/govortsova, Stubbs/Dellacqua-or-Stosur from Australia, chinese Tian Tian Sun/Shuai Peng, Italy sends a pair which has two singles-players....this make 86 :)

All in all: i don't think ITF won't give WC to doubles players (i think Chan and Bondarenko gonna get one), but it's not a must, as you say...

*Huber, Stubbs, Chia-Jung, Yung-Jan, Mauresmo, Vesnina, Gagliardi
**so ITF would give doubles-WC to pairs who includes one doubles-player, and if you see the remaining nations, one of the players likely to be in singles event (Ukraine-Bondarenko, Spain-Medina Garrigues...etc..)

nitsansh
Jun 29th, 2008, 07:08 PM
Here is my math...

Players in doubles who don't play singles:
Huber (USA)
Peschke (CZE)
Stubbs (AUS)
Chuang (TPE)
Chan (TPE)
Mauresmo (FRA)
Vesnina (RUS)
Zvonareva (RUS)
Gagliardi (SUI)
Unknown Japanese
Katerina Bondarenko (UKR)
Ruano-Pascual (ESP)
Tian (CHN)

That's at least 13... which leaves 9 places open... in case the likes of Chan, Bondarenko, Ruano-Pascual get WC in singles, there are more places available in doubles, but let's assume they don't...

Players in the top-10, who qualify automatically to the doubles tournament, are free to chose their partner, regardless of their ranking or whether they qualified in singles. The rules are absolutely clear about this. The only requirements are that the partner has a ranking in singles or doubles (unfortunately for Cara Black, there's no other Zimbabwean in the ranking), and that the total no. of male or female players from that country doesn't exceed 6. So Sugiyama, Peschke, Stubbs or Azarenka may choose whoever they like, and ITF has nothing to say about it.

As of now, these countries are guarantied places in the doubles tournament:
USA-2 (Huber-Davenport, Serena-Venus)
CZE-2 (Peschke-?, Vaidisova-Benesova)
RUS-2 (Safina-Kuznetsova, Vesnina-Zvonareva)
CHN-2
FRA-2 (Mauresmo-Golovin, Razzano-Cornet)
ITA-2
JPN (Sugiyama-?)
AUS (Stubbs-?)
TPE (Chuang-Chan)
BLR (Azarenka-?)
AUT
POL
SRB
SVK
ESP (Ruano-Pascual-Medina-Garrigues)
SUI (Schnyder-Gagliardi)
UKR (Bondarenko-Bondarenko)

That's 23 couples, so there are 9 couples still undecided, which means at least 9 players who don't play singles.
The 46 players (23 couples) who qualified in doubles include at least 13 players who don't play singles named above... so there are 9 vacancies for players who play only doubles and 9 vacancies for doubles... it's OK if each of these couples include one qualifier in singles and one doubles-only player... but if countries who allready qualified in doubles want to name a player who didn't qualify in singles, and they have the right to do so, then ITF will be forced to give WC in singles to a doubles player. There's no reason to penalize the likes of Chan and K.Bondarenko and overlook them for singles WC because they allready play in doubles. The same also goes for Sugiyama's partner, espacially if that's Morigami.
Ruano-Pascual won't get a WC in singles IMO.

About your interpretation about the ranking... do you think ITF will wait until next Monday before they start their selection process? It doesn't make sense to me...

Kristoffer
Jun 29th, 2008, 08:07 PM
Peschke won't go to olympics...so don't count her....
I know they can choose whoever they want (i know the rules), but they would be stupid if they choose low ranked players....And there are good players in singles-list to choose like Govortsova, Stosur, Dellacqua...etc...but it's still only two players...and if they choose non-singles-players, they still can award KBondarenko and Chan, and have 4 place to new countries....

Well, it's already clear that lately (not only at Wimbledon) Tanasugarn, Wickmayer, K Bondarenko and Mattek climbed up a lot...and the first 3 have big chances to get WC....

You just show one part, i show other part....beleive me, it will be in the middle :)

both Ruano/Medina and Martinez/Llagostera will play the Olympics since Medina qualifies as a top ten players since there are already two Taiwanese players there and there's another spot to fill.

Also Llagostera received wild card for singles so the Spanish Team will look like this:

Singles:
Anabel Medina
Carla Suárez
Nuria Llagostera

Doubles:
Medina/Ruano
Llagostera/Martínez

Maybe her mail to her fanpage Golovin Attitude will help to ask your question: http://www.golovin-attitude.com/en/?p=171

Who will replace Mauresmo in the doubles?
Will Vogt be replaced by another WC or just the Next-In?
Why doesn't the ITF update the lists on their site?

Still open questions are:

Kirilenko - Will she be at Olympics?
Petra Kvitova - Will she for sure be at Olympics?
Martinez Sanchez - Will she be at Olympics?
... and a new one... how are withdrawals (Singles) being handled? Is there a next-in list and who are the top ten on that list? Have there been any withdrawals yet? Where is that list?

The only withdrawal I have read about it Vogt.

There is a Next-In list, which as far as I know goes like this:

1) K. Bondarenko
2) Gallovits
3) Morigami
4) Craybas
-If Knapp is out, Garbin would then be eligible, and she would be in this spot.
5) Nakamura
6) Ruano Pascual

8) Wickmayer
9) Niculescu
10) Tanasugarn

It has been discussed that Paszek will be out because she was not granted a spot by her NOC, and that Gallovits is suffering from an injury. If both of those players really are out, Jill would be in.

.... ok..... so is this correct: The entry list / next-in is used, but if the next-in player is from a country that already has 4 players entered (in singles?) then that player is skipped and the one after her on the next-in list gets the spot.

Yes. Or in Russia's case, if someone from Russia withdraws, next in is Petrova and then Kirilenko. NOT Craybas.

So it means that doubles players will be selected, doesn't it?...

in that case these are the first alternetes:
1. Maria Jose Martinez Sanchez (ESP - 86)
2. Maret Ani (EST - 97)
3. Tzipora Obziler (ISR - 117)
4. Greta Arn (HUN - 142)
5. Sunitha Rao (IND - 159)
6. Tatiana Poutchek (BLR - 162)
7. Emanuelle Gagliardi (SUI - 168)
8. Betina Jozami (ARG - 183)
9. Anna Gerasimou (GRE - 230)

So it means neither Craybas nor Gallovits.

Thanks for the Jill updates...I had no idea she had other fans out there!! Oh well, even if her dream doesn't come true by playing in the Olympics....maybe she can have a great tournament in Cincinatti (I see her name on the entry list) I'm really really really hoping this old girl has a few good more results left in her.

Go Jill!!!!

Jill could still be "on site". No one is "on site" yet. The USTA is holding out til the last possible chance they can for Jill. She'll easily get a WC into Cincinnati so Cincy is not the issue. It's just getting someone to withdraw. :o

If Paszek is out ... doesn't that mean Jill is in? She wasn't in the picture with Lindsay, Vee, and Ree along with the male Olympians.

I would put a lot of money on seeing a 1R of Cara Black vs. Zheng Jie
With all the rules about who can be placed in which quarter, it is just asking for a rigged draw.

It can be better. That's not a nice trip. Sometimes better alone.
