This is one of the best draw we can have for Anna.

Considering the 2008 form I think 4th Round is a real possibility.

It's another good draw for Anna. But she doesn't take advantage of them.
And when the points fall off this summer, she won't get these anymore

yeah i've noticed that, anna like most head cases have this tendency to lose the plot when they missed on a big point. i believed this is more prevalent now in her matches as compared to last year. could be a sign of lack of confidence too. she gets frustrated easily because she thinks every little thing can turn around an entire match. anna have always reminded of someone who thinks a lot even during matches so i won't be surprise if her overthinking can cause her to tense up....now i don't know if what i said made any sense. anna's up and down form during matches confuses me at times...

it's worth noting that Chakvetadze has decided not to play the Beijing Olympics, which will guarantee Dinara Safina the fourth and final spot on the team. The Russian has also severed her relationship with Justine Henin's former coach, Carlos Rodriguez, as she feels she wasn't getting enough attention. She's trying out Nadia Petrova and Dinara Safina's ex-coach, Glen Schapp, at Wimbledon.
Forgoing a shot at gold wasn't an easy decision for Chakvetadze, but she struggled big time this year and is very much a realist about her chances.
"I'm not ready and it would be tough to play two big tournaments in one month with the Olympics and the US Open," she told TR. "It's better for me to take some time off and practice. It was a big decision, but you go to the Olympics when you feel like you can take the medal, and I don't feel like that now. The Olympics is for my country and the US Open is maybe is a bigger tournament for me. I need more confidence and practice. I think it's the right decision. Every year is different, I thought I could play better this the year than last and as you can see by my results, I haven't. But I'm trying to stay positive. I know I can play at a high level. I just need to work hard to get there."
Chakvetadze was very hopeful after visiting with Rodriguez before Roland Garros, but upon returning to the academy, realized that she wasn't a top priority.
"Unfortunately he can't travel and has so much to do and is always busy," she said. "The second time I came he didn't have time to practice with me because he had meetings all the time and I actually came there because of him. I need someone who can take care of me all the time. When he told he wasn't able to travel and then he couldn't make the practice, I decided I needed someone all the time. He gave me a coach to travel with, but that wouldn't work because I wanted more of his time.. Now I'm with Glenn and I know him quite well, but it's tough on him too because it's the first week. But I don't want to look too far way because I thought it would work with Carlos and it didn't."

I watched Anna's match on Wimbledon Live. The 1st set was pure torture. I have never seen her play so poorly except during last year's infamous USO semifinal against Kuzzie. Not only was she making a ton of UEs, but she was often missing by a mile, even on her backhand. It sometimes felt like she had never played on grass before, or was trying to implement changes in her technique. I really wish she could hit with a bit more spin when she's having a day like that. Dubois won that set easily without doing anything special. In the 2nd set, Anna kept going for her shots and was hitting more winners, but was still far from her best. The 3rd set was almost as bad as the first. Luckily for Anna, Dubois played too cautiously when she was ahead; she was content to simply put the ball back in play and wait for Anna to hand the match to her. It almost happened, but Anna did show a lot of fight toward the end, especially on the 3 match points. She was literally trying to will herself back into the match, and never gave up. That's about the only positive thing I can say about this match.

Anna has a very kind draw, I'm hoping she can at least defend last year's points.

 I've spotted myself in the crowd on that match video that was posted.

It was most definitely not a great match by Anna but I was mightily impressed with her fighting qualities. She looked down for long periods but she did not give up and she played her best on the points that really mattered. :yeah:

For some reason Steph Dubois is so much smaller in person that I thought she was. Very compact, solid play from the baseline but doing nothing really special. Steph played with enough margin of error to keep putting the ball back in court. All the control of the match seemed to come from Anna and for long spells it was unforced errors. Anna definitely had a problem when serving from the south-facing side of the court. The sun was really strong all day and you could tell it was bothering her and getting in her eyes.

There was a reasonable amount of vocal support for Anna, myself included. (Honorable mention to the guy next to me who delayed getting his lunch to stay to the end of this despite the fact he said he was starving. :D ) However I did have a horrible sinking feeling when she went match point down as I thought it might ruin my day. I think it was the first match point when a bird landed in the middle of the court. My heart almost stopped as I thought at first somebody had thrown something on and the point would have to be replayed. As it was Anna kept her composure and won the point. The bird may just have kept her in it!

Anna saved her best for those match points. I'm not sure what was going on in her head for long periods of the match. She was perhaps going for too much unnecessarily. She hits really flat, leaves little margin for error. It was probably not necessary to play this way against a player of Steph's level. Luckily, she survives to play another day.

In fact, she's last on Court 2 on Wednesday against Gallovits who I know very little about.

Anna needs to head to the practise court and sort out returning those low bouncing slice shots to her forehand. It was a definite weakness today. Most of her responses ended up in the net. I liked how she seemed to get more confident on her serve towards the end. I didn't say before but the commentators today picked up on it: Anna seems to have slightly tweaked her service action again. I would hope it will make it more consistent in pressure situations but it was quite shaky in round one, particularly when she was serving facing the sun.

Anna was definitely in a fiery mood. She gave the umpire some abuse over a Gallovits serve that hit the sideline which Anna was convinced was out. In fact she was still talking about it to the guy after the match!

Anna was definitely in a fiery mood. She gave the umpire some abuse over a Gallovits serve that hit the sideline which Anna was convinced was out. In fact she was still talking about it to the guy after the match!

She also gave a ballgirl a talking to for not having the balls ready on the correct side. :tape: I felt quite sorry for the poor girl. I guess Anna isn't gonna win the Miss Congeniality award.

Anna can get so crazy at times. Her outbursts and tantrums are never boring. I just love players like her. They make any ordinary early round matches worth remembering and worth talking about.

Rodina is going to be tough to beat. She's the one who was so close to beating Sharapova in the French Open first round.

Anna's patches of good play once again boggles me. After nearly losing on Day 1, her serve didn't get broken in her match yesterday.

I was able to watch a couple of points in the first set before the rain delay and Anna looked pretty good. I hope the next round goes as well.

Nicole seems to have rediscovered her form at this tournament. Historically Anna has always found her hard to handle. We'll see what happens now. It would be very nice for Anna to pick up her first victory in this head-to-head. It could be very tricky.

A. Chakvetadze Interview

Anna Chakvetadze def. Evgeniya Rodina 6-4, 6-3

http://www.wimbledon.org/images/pics/large/b_27_chakvetadze_12_ap_a_grant.jpg

Q. How do you feel like you played?
ANNA CHAKVETADZE: Well, I feel pretty good. You know, I finally passed third round in Wimbledon, so it feels great, and I'm happy to be in the second week.

Q. Level wise just talk about how you felt like you played today?
ANNA CHAKVETADZE: Well, I think I played much, much better than my previous rounds, you know, especially my first match was horrible. And then match by match, you know, I feel better.

Q. You're okay that you got off to the fast start in the second set and then she came back, but at least you closed it out there at the end.
ANNA CHAKVETADZE: Yeah, I think it was okay for me. Because, you know, two points on her serve, I won that game pretty quickly. And then 5 Love up I lost concentration a little bit, but still was able to finish the match in two sets, and I'm really happy with my result. You know, I had some tough time this year, and I think to be to play the fourth round, it's a good result already.

Q. You talked about some of the tough times you've had this year, and we all know the terrible ordeal that you went through. How long did it take you to really push that aside psychologically?
ANNA CHAKVETADZE: Well, I think, you know what, psychologically I was okay, you know, already at the Australian Open. I was ready to play. But the thing is that I didn't really have preparation because I had a reinjury. Unfortunately I didn't have a preparation for the season, so probably that's why it's very tough, especially physically when you don't have a preparation, like your fitness work, your physical work before the season starts. It's really tough to play.

Q. So you're going to play Vaidisova who you've played twice. It's been two years, which probably seems like a long time to you.
ANNA CHAKVETADZE: Yeah, I think it's one of her best surfaces, the grass court. It will be a very tough match for me. You know, she serves quite well, and on return she's just hitting. She's just attacking all the time. It will be a tough match, but I will try to play my best. I think it's already not a bad result that I made the fourth round already.

Q. As you say, you've psychologically recovered from it, but can you go around and look at a tournament the way you once did? Do you feel the same security you once had? Are there any problems at all left over from that incident, or none at all?
ANNA CHAKVETADZE: There's no problem. Completely I feel okay. Yeah, nothing bother me. I feel fine.

Q. Mentally, though, with some of the other things you've been going through this year with the coaching and the loss of confidence, you go into a match against Vaidisova who's also been struggling up until this tournament, do you feel like you can go out there and really play your game? Do you feel like you're in that good mental space again?
ANNA CHAKVETADZE: Well, yeah, I feel I'm ready. I had three straight wins, you know. Of course the level of the players is not the same as Nicole. As I said, I will try to play my best to I will try to stay tough on court. It will be very important to hold my serve. I will have two days off, and that's the good thing.

Q. You have a style that we don't see that often anymore among the women, in that you're sort of flowing around the court a little bit more. Do you wish women's tennis was a little bit more like that overall instead of bashing the ball?
ANNA CHAKVETADZE: Well, I think it's more because of physical conditions, you know. Because if you can banging the ball, why not do that?

Q. So you would bash it if you could?
ANNA CHAKVETADZE: Yeah (laughter).

Q. Did you find today that you were trusting your shots when the big points were there?
ANNA CHAKVETADZE: Yeah, I felt actually the game was pretty on control, you know. But sometimes she got pretty lucky, you know, especially a few serves on the line, a few net balls. But I was fighting till the end, I was playing till the end, and that's why I won.

Q. So this is the best you've felt since when?
ANNA CHAKVETADZE: It's tough to say, because every day is different. All the players are different. So I think this is probably one of my best matches on grass I can say.

And Nicole's 2 wins came before Anna won her first title on tour. Right now they're both struggling to win matches but I'm picking Nicole because of her edge on the serve and with it being on grass. However, if Anna serves well, keep the DFs at bay and forced Nicole to make good returns (return of serve being one of Nicole's weakness) then I think she'll win.

I think this is a good Match by Anna, unfortunately she is unable to break also in the 2nd set, but for about 1 Hour she is clearly the better player here.

Nicole has this damn serve, one of the most dangerous in WTA and with a high 1st serve % it's really hard to break Vaidisova.

I think this Wimbledon can give the confidence to Anna for the next Months, today I have see in the first part of the Match the good old Anna, with these 10 minute of mentally blackout between tie-break (and how much lucky is Vaidisova with the net??? :tape:) and 0-3 in the third.

Now Anna has a coach and she can work well to return to the 2007 levels and then improve on other things.

Reading what you guys said it was a good match although I hear Anna was throwing tantrums again. She really needs to cut that out.

At least she improved on last year but Wimbledon is still not yet a great tournament for her. It will be interesting to see how she can push on with her new coach. It seems like she's regaining some of her form.

Nicole Vaidisova def. Anna Chakvetadze 4‑6, 7‑6, 6‑3

Q. This is a question unrelated to today's match. Do you have any nicknames? Have you been known by a nickname at any stage in your career?
ANNA CHAKVETADZE: Yeah, I have, Chak or A Chak.

Q. Can I ask where you think it went wrong for you today?
ANNA CHAKVETADZE: Well, I think it was a pretty close match, all the sets was pretty close. I broke the first one, broke her serve the first set.

Then in the second set, in the tiebreaker, I think in the beginning she made two net balls, you know. It was very disappointing for me.

And I think also she had a lot of lucky shots in important moment, like a lot of net balls. And the last set also: 5‑3, deuce, net ball again.

No, it's good for her. She's a good player and she deserve definitely this win. You know, maybe I didn't use my opportunities in the second set. But still, she served really well today, and it was tough to return.

Yes, it happens expecially during the 2nd set tie-break and the first games in the 3rd set.

It's embarassing to see sometimes and also for a player that have the brain as main weapon it's very bad, you must to be concentrate in these moments, I remember too many matches that ends on this way, like Anna-Dementieva in a US Open, ecc. ecc.

Look at the French Open 2007 when she wins against Safarova, she lost 0-6 the 2nd set where all goes on Safarova side, but she stay calm (don't know why :tape::lol:) and she wins at the end.

If Anna can control the emotions I'm sure she starts winning more matches like this, obviously can happens to lose when you are the better player on court for most of the time, but one day is good for your opponent, the next is good for you.

Full credit to Nicole for not going away after losing the opening set, but I still feel Anna's temper cost her the match more than anything else.

I was actually pretty impressed by Anna's poise during the 1st set. She served well when she needed to, and although she had trouble on return she hit two very nice angled winners to give her a 30-40 lead and a set point when Nicole was serving down 4-5, and quickly closed out the set.

Anna then had a few chances to take the lead early in the 2nd, but didn't use them. Later on, she became more and more frustrated by her inability to handle Nicole's serve, and when things got tight and Nicole started playing a bit better during rallies, Anna fell apart mentally. Oy, did she lose it. Anna often has rather sudden (and sometimes extreme) reactions and mood swings during matches, even within the span of a single game, but we're talking about borderline-pathological behavior here :help:. Seriously. She made Vaidisova look calm and collected by comparison.

Anna did calm down a few games later, but by then she had dug herself into a hole and Nicole's mostly solid serving (and a bit of luck with the net) prevented Anna from breaking back.

Overall, Anna did better than expected after that awful first round, but she could have gone even further. There is no doubting her intense desire to win, but I really wish she could find a way to harness her emotions in a more productive way.

So it was that bad huh? They only showed in here the last couple of games. I only heard the commentator mention, (when Schaap was shown on TV) that he was the bearer of verbal abuse from Anna at the end of the second set. I knew that she was the one who lost her composure but I didn't think she went bonkers.

My thoughts on the match, as I mentioned before, the serve will be Nicole's edge and the match stats showed how well Nicole is serving and how difficult it was for Anna to break her serve. When the match turned into a serving contest, Anna with her serve would always be more vulnerable.

Anyways, even though Anna lost I still think she had a pretty good run in here. I hope she learns from it and got some confidence with the wins she had.

And I find it amusing that Anna is very much aware of being called Chak. Reminds me of that hilarious thread title Chak Attack! :haha:
