Maria returned horribly today, she struggled to get the ball back in court :o

But apart from that, she played pretty well....I've got loads of pics which I'll upload later.

It's just unbelieveable actually. Will this girl get ever some rest?
If it's not the rain, then it's to forget about committing for doubles on time.

Sunday winning Barcelona on clay. Monday practise in Rosmalen on grass and Tuesday playing 2 times. Then Wednesday playing in Roehampton. She's still not finished this week.
Wimbledon singles even hasn't started and I really think she can't start fresh at it.
Gladly she hasn't even real injuries lately (only little ones), but I kinda worry about her. Of course I believe she has fun with tennis, but sometimes it's just too much. We actually can't expect great results with this type of schedule.

The way Maria plays exerts a lot of strain on her body. I do worry about injuries in the long term.

Me 2. She's young now, so mostly she can take it. But in a few years... I'm not so sure.

Nope, they have achieved the same now as they had committed on time.

I went to Roehampton and it was rather like watching Maria and Flavia play down the local park. It was so up close and intimate. The first set was fairly tight with quite a few errors. But they began to play with far more confidence in the second and their quality started to show. I've got tickets for Court 1 on the day of the women's doubles semis. Here's hoping I see them play again in a fortnight.

TBH I don't really like this draw. Dushevina has only won one match at Wimbledon, but she is a former girl's champion there. 2nd round against Mattek or Bremond is okay, but Wimbledon is Bremond's best slam, she had a Q/F in 2006. Bartoli has form on grass and is doing well this week. Then.................... Serena Williams.

IMO it is a bad draw.

Well one win is not very good. Not for a player who wants to be in the top 15. There is no reason why Maria can't do quite well on grass, as her coach has said. She got no points at Miami and only a 2nd round at Paris. These events have to count in her ranking and she should be targeting the 3rd or fourth round at least.

Nikkiri
Jun 20th, 2008, 11:48 AM
Well its best not to expect too much given her previous grass results. I'm sure she is targeting to make later stages in all events she plays but sometimes it just doesn't work out and that's not due to her not trying.

Maria is second on court 18 tomorrow (Noon start). That's actually quite an illustrious court I think, after Centre, 1 and 2. Ferrero is playing first, so I'll try to get there early and get a good seat for that match. But it could be one of the hardest courts to get into.

Thanks for remembering me guys. I had a great seat on court 18 (the 4th best court) in the front row of the grandstand near the middle of the court. I've never seen live tennis before and my only comparison was with the Ferrero match on before. I thought Masha started terribly in the 1st and improved a bit in the 2nd. Dushevina did quite well I thought. But frankly, aside from Masha serve, I can't think of one part of her game that looked good. Too many unforced errors on the baseline, she hardly won a point at net and I couldn't really grasp what strategy she had. I've often thought Masha has good variety in her game, but none of it seemed to work at all today. It all seemed to be over so fast.

Still she looked great, would have just been nice to see her without he visor! I agree with spycimir.

Thanks for this full coverage. I was hoping someone would make such summary like me after Warszawa tourney which might be posted on her official website. But Maria finished her Wimby trip very quickly. :crying2: Anyway I encourage you, _only_one_maria to publish this story on mkirilenko.com.

It started about halfway through. It just suddenly came from nowhere. The only other expression I remember was an exasperated 'Maashaaa!' when she hit a ball into the net early on. From now on, I will only refer to her as Masha.

I've said all I want to say about the match in the Wimbledon thread. Needless to say, it was an anti-climax and over too soon! I thought I might indulge myself and give you an account of my own Wimbledon diary.

I got the train at 5.15am (I'm not used to these early starts) and by the time I'd got the underground and arrived at Wimbledon Park for the queue it was 8.15am. I was given a 'queue card' that said 4431. I assume the person in front had one that said 4430. Thankfully it was a nice day as thousands of us sat out in the park watching the planes coming in to land at Heathrow airport, about one every two minutes. You'd think thousands of people queueing up would be absolute chaos, but it was just unbelieveably ordered, civilised and genial. At 10.15am we got up to start moving. (Yep, after 2 hours!). We walked what must have been the best part of a mile towards the grounds seeing hundreds of cars parked on a golf course on our way (though not on the greens) and I did my best to avoid the various cameras that were placed along the route to catch a glimpse of us queuers. Then to my horror I recognised a children's television presenter with a microphone and a guy carrying a camera behind her. This was ominous. They were heading straight for me. Luckily they stopped to chat with the two girls in front of me - one of whom I must say was very telegenic. Once in the queue at Wimbledon you can't change your position and I felt I'd been pretty fortunate to have got the spot I did. These two girls were A-Level students (17-18 years) who had been revising for exams on the way.

Having thankfully avoided the annoying tv presenter (don't they always look a lot smaller in real life?) we headed towards the entrance. First we had to go through security. An announcer told us delightedly that it was 'Airport Style Security', presumably to make us feel safe (this is a big issue in Britain nowadays - a story for another time though) but I just thought it was inconvenient. So I walked throught the detector and, wouldn't you know it, the machine starts beeping. A young, serious looking man then asked me to step to one side and told me to hold out my arms as he proceeded to 'frisk' me, that is, feel his hands up and down my body to check that if I am carrying anything on my person. You must have seen this happen countless times on tv and film. I was certainly a bit uncomfortable when he got to the thigh/groin area. Though the previously mentioned girls thought it very amusing. The security man could feel something in my trouser pocket and asked sternly what it was I was carrying. I think he was disappointed to find out that it was only a mobile phone and some keys.

So, from there we were able to move quickly to the ground and I got myself an ordinary ground pass, mewaning I could go anywhere expect Centre/No1 Court. This was just after 11 and it seemed pretty easy to get lost in the place. I wandered around for a bit and tried to head for the practice area. We couldn't get in, but there was a fair crowd waiting outside the locker room for the big stars to come out. After a few minutes Sharapova arrived but I really didn't care. There was only one player I wanted to see . Djokovic arrived and while I was distracted, a girl with a blond ponytail had walked back into the locker room from the practice area. Could it have been Masha? She looked about the right size. I was mad at having missed her A couple of minutes later the same girl came back out and it was ........... Anna Chakvetadze. Oh well. The odd person was walking in or out, but the chance of seeing Masha here looked to be receding. Having been distracted again, I then looked back to see a a male and female player together walking away, she with long blonde hair, he a bit taller with long blonde hair aswell. Could it have been Masha with Igor? I'll never know.

The best thing seemed to be to head to Court 18 and once play started on the main courts, it was a lot easier to get seats. I worked my way to the front of the crowd so that I was in the front row of seats behind the server. Ferrero eventually won what looked a good match - although I'd never seen tennis 'live' before and the crowd looked to their schedules to see what the next match was. 'Two Russian players I haven't heard of' seemed to be the general consensus in the crowd - what was the matter with these people????? They had no idea what awaited them.

Eventually Masha arrived and started knocking up at my end. It was here I remembered Spycimir's point about the visor. It would have been nice to see her without it. Given the direction of the match, I was reduced to fawning over Masha from 15 feet behind. I spotted her team in the reserved box, Igor and Yuri chatting, Van Harpen tearing his hair out. I was amazed at how Yuri in particular was so disengaged from the match. Alright, it was at a distance, but all he offered was the occasional round of applause. Having spent 5 games chatting to Yuri, Igor left (4-1) and Masha's play improved a little - coincidentally, I expect. But it was just all over so soon, in a little over an hour and aside from one cry of 'Maaashaaa' afer hitting one ball into the net, we got very little expression from our girl. There wasn't much more from the crowd either, I was a bit surprised there weren't more Masha fans around, but most of the crowd looked completely disinterested.

Afterwards I sat down on a bench and wondered if it was worth it, an anti-climax really and started to wander about a bit. I noticed Igor was next on court 4, so I thought I'd go down as this would be the most likely place to spot Masha. Meanwhile on court 3 Anna Chak was facing match points and a large Russian man - I assume her father (he was standing behind the relatives' bench) - was going mad at the sidelines. This really annoying cockney bloke who thought he was very knowlegdable about tennis then tried to start a conversation with him - assuming this Russian guy was just a tennis fan - 'Yeah, she's a funny one Chakvetadze, I followed her results quite a bit. Up and down like. Not a bad each way bet. Perhaps she needs a good coach etc etc'

Anyway, by now, Andreev was arrving on Court 4 for his match. I looked around for Masha, but couldn't find her. Perhaps it was all too much today? Maybe she had gone to lie down in a darkened room? I certainly felt like doing that for a bit. With nothing else to do, I decided to just watch the match. It was actually pretty good. Igor lost the 1st set on a tie-break and then during the 2nd set I looked across and I could see Masha sitting down on the other side of the court next to Yuri. They seemed to be chatting, disinterested in the tennis, funnily enough just as Yuri and Igor were during Masha's match. Masha leaned over to speak to the woman on her left and I thought these might be Igor's parents. After a bit I decided to walk round and I found myself standing behind Masha, just to the side. Her hair was within touching distance. At one point she looked leftwards to speak to Igor's mum(?) and I got a good side view of her. For the first time without the visor! A little worried that she had spotted me and that she had also seen me in the front row of the crowd on Court 18, I moved back round the other side of the court. Masha and Yuri were just chatting the whole time, occasionally offering a little applause if Igor won a point. I noticed Masha looking in my direction and wondered again if she had spotted me. I suspect not. Igor got mad at a line call that went against him at 5-5 all, but then won the crucial 2nd set tie-break. I tried to catch Masha's reaction to this on my phone but she hardly reacted at all. Was this just her temperament or was she really not interested?

I left the grounds at this point and with pretty mixed feelings. Of course it was nice to have seen Masha, but I never had a perfect view of her, it would have been good to just walk past her, make eye contact and smile. But it wasn't to be and I wonder if I haven't sometimes invested a bit too much in all this, in a girl I won't ever meet or speak to.

'I encourage you......... to publish this story on m.kirilenko.com.'

That's very nice, I'm not sure they'd go for it however. Basically me talking about Masha's bad performance, Yuri's disinterest and the ambivilent reaction to Igor's match.

Oh man, you're no one else that stereotype phlegmatic Englishman who complains on everything ;) I don't know you though so that's only my impression.

MAria's official website is HER FANS website. They create it and your story is one of many others, your point of view. World is not only beautiful, papa Yuri has the opportunity to yawn sometimes :D

If you've already written such great text, give other fans that chance to get to know Makiri from your side. Not all of fans visit tennisforum.com.

First of all good win for Makiri and Flavia today. It`s to nice to see them put together a very good performance like they did today. Obviously this is a great start for them and a nice way for Makiri redeem herself for her first round lost.

As for mixed doubles, it`s nice that Makiri and Igor are teaming up. I see that they have Domi and Michal Mertinak in their first round match. Not a bad match, but it would be so much more intriguing if Gael was able to play. Anyway hopefully Makiri will do well in mixed doubles.

Maria was more concerned about playing a clay court tournament the week after the French Open instead of preparing for Wimbledon. And it showed in her poor play. Masha made the junior Wimbledon semi's in 2002 and lost a tough 3 set match to Maria Sharapova. Back in 2002 I thought Makiri who moves well, volley's well and defends well would be an excellent grass court player but she sin't. In fact she's a poor grass court player. And I've never seen such a good mover and good volleyer as Maria be such a bad grass court player. It's hard to believe. But she really doesn't care about the grass court season. That much is apparent.

She might as well.;) Anything to increase her exposure to the grass surface. Heck, I would recommend Makiri to mow the lawn courts, be a ballgirl, or lines judge too!:p She needs to get that Stella McCartney outfit some exposure to the public. I'm also second guessing her decision on playing another clay court tourney in preparation for Wimbledon. Yes, it's nice she won another title, but with her game and mobility I just can't understand why she continues to struggle on grass.

It is only this year that she has done this in her schedule. Her coach insists that she play as much clay court tennis as possible. He believes ths is what will improve her game the most. He sees her as someone who will play best on slower surfaces. I'm not at all convinced by this and one thing that struck me watching Masha's match from the stand on monday was her poor variety. The slice didn't work and she hardly won a single point at the net. Her results on faster courts this year are woeful.

In keeping with her coach's plan, her next tournament is a Tier IV clay courter in Slovenia.

 I'm utterly disgusted by Maria's poor grass record. Someone of her playing style should do well on grass, instead she's probably even more horrible on it than the Spanish clay courters. It would seem she's finally found a way to play on grass last year when she took Jankovic to 3 sets in the 3rd round of Birmingham, apparently that was just a fluke. I'm really disappointed.
