View Full Version : Grass, rain, strawberries & tea time! Aravane in the UK!

A thread for the grass-court season! ;) Aravane plays the 3 British tournaments, last year she reached the 3rd of Wimbledon having very good sensations at her own surprise!

A very good draw to start in Birmingham, Aravane is even seeded (13rd), the number which provides luck, Dinara reached Roland-Garros' final as the 13rd seed :p;)!
She will face Tzipi Obziler to begin, the Israeli made a decent show against Venus in RG, but Aravane should be too much for her. If she manages to beat her, Morita or Cirstea will be the next one! Could be tough especially with the Japonese whose flat game is made for grass. Bammer is the main seed of the quarter.

I have a good feeling, last time she defeated Tzipi in the 1st round, she went to final after. It was in Istanbul ^^!
Allez Aravane!

After Safina's withdrawal, the draw has been modified & Aravane had to play the talented Brit' Amanda Elliot, 19, who qualified after having beaten Brenda Schultz. Aravane gave herself a big scare since she was led 43 in the third set with a break while she was barely scoring points on return.
All in all, she won 63 26 76(6) in 1h35min, saving one match point to qualify to the 2nd round! :yeah:

On paper, this is not impressive at all since Elliot is not even in top 300 but as a first match on a new surface, I guess we shouldn't be asking for too much. Her serve is at least good, she kept a high percentage of 1st serves.
Next is Bettanie Mattek, who is anything but talented. But once again, she has a good serve and it's enough to threaten Aravane.

Good luck!!

Aravane lost 61 64 to Mattek :help:.

I'm so pissed at her at the moment, she cannot score a single point on her opponent's 1st serve, only 1 in the second set for example!!! God, this loss is so bad, Aravane is going backwards, it has been ages since she has beaten a top 50 opponent. Since her operation on her nose, she has done concretely nothing & there is no signs of improvement whatsoever.

I don't know what to do with Aravane now..she isn't improving at all! At the start of the year at least she was improving and playing better and better, now she is back to where she was maybe a year or more ago, it only takes a few things and she's easily beaten.

Aravane doesn't really look fully ready to play on grass. Thanks God she only plays Duque Marino! She was in trouble on her serve which is nothing good on this surface ; anyway I don't particularly think her game can work here. On clay she has enough time to compensate an ackward timing but on grass, it's different. Everything happens fast. Well it's a good exercise after all, I would love Aravane to go to the net, to take the ball early (something she rarely does) or to be demanding with her footwork. So I don't have many expectations .
Let's see if she can do that this year. Allez, surprise us!

Iceland

Aravane through her first round. 64 61 over Mariana :yeah:. She must have pressed on the turbo mode because she only needed 25min. to finish the match off, starting from 54. She needed several SPs to conclude but after this, games were extremely quick. Many first serves in, no BPs to save... very well done!
I really hope I will be proven wrong and that grass will bring the best of her game. Her strokes can definitely be effective, it's just a matter of how demanding she will be with movement, serve %, shot selection, & footwork. It's actually the points she needs to work on in her game, so there couldn't be any better exercise. :D

She will play Kudryavtseva later on in the afternoon if the weather stays good. The Russian can be very erratic but seems to enjoy playing on grass. Should be a tougher match. Allez!!!

Yes, Aravane certainly upped her game from yesterday. She's a totally different player when her 1st serve percentage goes up. Of course, most are. I am really happy to see that Aravane is showing good consistency from match to match. Even in her losses this year, she has been very competitive. I still don't know how she managed to lose to Pavlyuchenkova in Miami, having three match points at 40-0 on her serve, and I was sitting in the front row. Then the A-Rad match. But anyway, she was getting close to breaking through and as of late she is playing beautifully. I hope she stays healthy and her confidence stays up because she is breathtaking to watch when she plays well.

Kudryavtseva has had some good results on grass so that match will be tough, but Aravane can do it!

Iceland

Aravane through a very tough match: 76(12) 36 62 over Alla.

She should have won the first set more easily since she was twice a break up. The Russian fought back and overall led the tie-break with an early 52 lead and two SPs on her own serve. Aravane proved she belongs to another league as she took the first set letting Alla self-destruct on 2 DF in a row. Sadly she didn't keep the momentum in the 2nd set despite an early BP. It doesn't matter much in the end as she totally dominated the last set :yeah:. It's a pretty good win, despite her opponent's low level of confidence. It's good to see Aravane playing as many matches as possible before Wimbledon. I doubt she can be seeded for this event so she better be ready for any first round possible.

She will play Li later in the afternoon. Another top 20 challenge! Good luck .

this is a very hard match for Aravane!

as me and Antoine were discussing a year ago in this thread, Aravane's ROS can go mental on grass when she don't have enough time to set up for her shots...I don't want to say that her third round in 07 was a fluke, but I'm certainly not predicting another 4r here, she just needs to go out and do her very best, something I think she will do!

Two relatively easy wins. It was just a matter of getting the break. She never really put herself in danger which is pretty encouraging on grass. This new Aravane could eventually do well. With a better serve, better returns and improved footwork, she may become a threat on this surface too! It's the only one on which she hasn't made any sparkles yet.
I quite like her chance for the QF. Errani isn't a good player on grass and she has already beaten Erakovic in the past.

BTW she'll back to top 20 next week ;)

Good day all told.

@Iceland: while I agree that Aravane's made improvements in her serve and footwork, I found nothing wrong with her returning from the past couple of seasons. Last year at RG, she was spectacular returning serve. Same at Bali. She hits a very deep, hard return that handcuffs her opponents, and usually sets herself up for a lot of BPs.

As for the QF, well, it's a wonderful opportunity, and with Li struggling atm, who knows. She can win this tournament if she serves well.

I went to the match today, my first time to see Aravane live! I went because she and Na are two of my faves so I couldn't wait for the match.

Obviously Aravane didn't play her best, but she really is so exciting to watch live. She really goes for it, absolutely flies round the court and throws everything into the ball; her body weight is always moving forward and her aggression is obvious. However, on the grass, she was always second best to Li, and she couldn't match her power shot-for-shot; Li's shots skid through the surface far more effectively. Still, I love me some Rezai, hope she does well at Wimbledon. Oh, and she's WELL pretty in person (plus trimmer looking) She was also a crowd favourite, they really enjoyed her style.

She is a gorgeous young woman. It may not always come across in "action" photos (who looks their best grunting, making faces and contorted all out of shape anyway?) but if you meet her in person, you can see that her smile is so natural, and she has amazing eyes. She's very pretty.

Though it was obvious from the livestream Aravane was not moving well yesterday, credit to Li for playing so well and winning the tournament. ^She said her English is poor so she will try her best but asks the crowd to be patient and understanding. :) She said Caro is a great player who plays well on grass and is the defending champion so this is a really good win for her; that she had to fight really hard because of the wind and the opponent. She likes playing on grass more and more, and likes how fast and quick it is even though she's not totally used to the surface. She likes England alot and is excited for the rest of the tournament and Wimbledon. :)

It would be horrible if she misses Wimbledon due to this  Please, please don't be a bad injury!

^WOW, what a team, hope it's true.

Good luck against MJMS, Aravane! They are 3rd up on court 3 (I think)

Personally, I thought her English was fine; better than my French or Farsi ;) There was a cute moment when she basically ran out of things to say, or couldn't think of the english word, so she just laughed. It was so cute!

it's true,Sveta herself said it on her twitter page.Of course I'm  at such news

Any update on Aravane's wrist injury? it's indeed worrying

Still no news?

I just hope she's OK. Even if it's "playable" I would hate to see her try to play here and get a really bad injury because she came back too soon. She's so close to breaking through.

Drew Rybarikova in R1. Magdalena has a big serve, and moves well on grass. Won Birmingham a year ago. She is dangerous. Hopefully Aravane will be ready to go if she plays.

I just found an article from yesterday and Aravane said she'd been suffering from her wrist for several days and that the RMI would tell how serious it was. I have no idea when this MRI was planned, it wasn't mentioned, probably today so hopefully we'll get some news over the weekend ;)

Aravanecaravan
Jun 18th, 2010, 03:14 PM
Thanks. I figured she was not 100% at Eastbourne. No way would she go down to Martinez Sanchez 2-6 0-3 if she wasn't hurt. That score was off kilter from the get go.

I would have thought she would get the MRI sooner, though. Maybe they waited, thinking rest would take care of it. I sure hope it's not serious.

According to Eurosport FR, Aravane should be able to play at Wimbledon next week. She had a MRI recently and the results are reassuring.
No bone injury, she's just healing from an inflammation through effective treatment ;)
So pretty good news :yeah:

No lasting inury, but is she in pain? She might be able to play with it, but if it's sore, it's not a whole lot different. At least the MRI was negative.

According to French Sports Magazine L'Equipe, Aravane has been authorized by the doctors to play Wimbledon. She resumed practicing yesterday after 3 days of rest and most importantly, pain-free :yeah:

Aravane lost in 3 sets against Zakopalova  I don't know what happened, no images and to be honest I was following Mahut/Isner  :p
I know Klara can be very dangerous when she's on but I wonder if Aravane's wrist has bothered her during the match. Not an excuse but I'm sure Aravane could've won this match...

Oh well..... still the doubles ;) but they meet Petrova/Stosur in R2.....

Libertango
Jun 24th, 2010, 04:15 PM
I'm sad. :( Though not so surprised. Klara is so good when on, and I think her game is better for grass; her strokes are so flat and fast, and slightly shorter swings than Aravane = good for the surface.

Oh well, onto the American hardcourts; what's next? (Oh, and of course, dubs with Sveta!)

Well,I'm badly surprised and disappointed  :bigcry: Since we got nothing,no match shown anywhere I can't help but think maybe something must have been wrong with Aravane,or maybe it's only that she doesn't enjoy grass all that much.

I guess this is it for Wimbledon,if I'm not wrong in the next doubles round they face Petrova/Stosur.I don't think they'll get past them,I hope I'm wrong of course. Some Sveta fan that I talk to in twitter watched their doubles match the other day and said that Sveta was serving well, but Aravane was making many volley errors.Against such an experienced pair as Petrova/Stosur I don't think this will get them far.I'll be 100% behind my girls of course, but it'll be very difficult.

Libertango
Jun 24th, 2010, 08:01 PM
Just saw some clips on BBC. They said Zakopolova was very aggressive (and the clips they showed were of her hitting winners and coming in to volley) and that her game was better on the grass; apparently Rezai struggled with her timing. :(

Is it me or does Rezai seem fatigued. She had a good week in birmingham so while grass may not be her best she certainly can play better than that. She had one good run wen she won the 4 games in a row in the first set. She was outpowering zak. But that was the only time - just seemed tired

Match was not good specially from Aravane's side but I had a lot of fun watching my girls play together.Even after losing first set 0-6,they were all smiles and looked like having fun on court :worship:.Sveta has not taken the doubles too seriously in the last years and Aravane is less experienced in that discipline and it showed,so this result was completely expected by me,ok maybe not the bagel :( I wish they play more together in the future because I simply loved to see them together

Zakopalova has today defeated Pennetta so she must be playing some good tennis...

lilygotsilly
Jun 26th, 2010, 07:38 PM
I think we can conclude that Rezai needs some rest and that Zakapalova has really improved her grass prowess in the last couple of years in anonymity. She's always been decent on other surfaces but now she takes it really early and plays inside the bl more, plus she's definitely looking to end points quicker. Now her serve is still not great an her power has a limit so REzai who has also really improved her grass skills could have blown her off the court had she not been fatigued. Pennetta really not great grass player - ok - plus I think she needs a break now too. Interestingly, Kanepi may be somewhat fatigued becasue of qualifying , but her points have been quick and if she's on she might blow out Zakapalova simply with her power and serve.

As for Kuz - she needs to get back in therapy

I hope she gets some time off! Im starting to realize that there are three distict periods where the players are tired. Obviously at the end of a long season in october, november. But also in january as they are recovering from a lot of nicks and injuries and illnesses from the year before and sometimes one month isnt enough time off. And one other time i really hadnt realize is RIGHT NOW! After the long hard court and clay season , then right into the next slam and the grass season without any rest - right now a lot of the players are just plain exhausted. Try to rest up and come back strong in August -- thats the way to go, imo. Of course the men have davis cup next week , but then rest for a couple of weeks for cripes sake!!:bounce:
