If Maria goes through Safina, she should be able to handle Dementieva too. What do you think ppl?

Dinara lost a few 1st sets in Berlin. But I think the winner of this is the top half favorite to make the final

Mental strength is part of this game, deal with it

Yeh i agree with u, dementieva and safina have very similar games and if mara can get thru 1, she can beat the other

C'mon, Maria!! Break her back when play resumes.
She could use this time off so it was good, i think. :)

Maria could have lost the game very easily.

The 2nd set would be very interesting...

Yeah, it's amazing how Maria can work her way into this Slams, just like at the 2007 Australian Open, even though she didn't end up winning it that particular year. But I'm afraid of both players because I don't want either one to play Dementieva. If I had to choose, I'd hope Maria won, since I think Dementieva can handle her better on clay. :)

Yeah. Safina had 2 set points too at 6-4 up in the tiebreak before Maria won it 8-6, remember? But Safina's already a break up in the 2nd set. Although I favour Maria to win now, the match isn't over.

Dinara is gonna need some real mental toughness in the 2nd set, not only did she lose the set but she lost many break points and 2 set points, ouch! Maria did really well though to close it out

hope it will be interesting, cuz the 1st set, although a close one, was not very entertaining for me. just regular, predictable game from both of them and some chokes from safina

jus my oppinion, in that they both strike te ball very hard and flat, both are strong baseliners, both can slug out a long match / long rallies etc etc IMO

You could see in the tiebreak that Safina survived on Masha's un-un-un-un-unforced errors.
Masha, get it together, and take your time!

that 2nd sp from safina wasn't a choke...lucky netcord by masha changed her position from attacking to defense in one...it happens but that wasn't a choke from safina on that point

Dementieva is a better mover than Safina. Sharapova needs to dictate points, which is much easier against slower people like Safina. That being said Safina should still (have) beat(en) Sharapova.

that's true. i don't blame safina for losing this sp, it's just her reactions afterwards. after 6:6 she looked as if she had already given up. and all in all, she lost the set, in which she played- in my opinion- significantly better

i'm waiting to see who this rain delay favours...people say it will benefit masha but imo it might benefit safina....

ONE dropshot (which Safina should have reached, btw) in the set that ended with a TB :worship: :worship: :worship:

I don't blame Masha though, she plays an Ok tennis. She doesn't need to play versatile to defeat that zombie that walked onto the court instead of Dinara.

Maria doesn't play like Serena or Justine. She's much more agressive and thus doesn't let Dina enough time to organise her game. As simple as that.

I have to hand it too her Maria is doing enough to get through at the moment. She's really picked up her game form previous rounds.

Dinara however DNS:fiery: She's just not there atm, sometimes in that 1st set it looked like she might make an appearance (some of the forehands:drool:) but alas no. Marias mental strenght means that she will win most tight sets.

If Dinara doesn't pick up she's going home:(

Maria is on another level to Dinara mentally, I think Berlin was Safina's peak and it won't happen again- I really cant see her winning here. Though Im crap at predictions.

On those last 4 points of the set, Maria hit about 20 shots, including 2 serve returns.
