Williams shakes off rust for first post-Wimbledon win

MANHATTAN BEACH, Calif. (AP) -- Serena Williams heard herself introduced as Wimbledon champion and the world's top-ranked woman for the first time since winning the title in July.

``It's really special for me,'' she said. ``I made my goal this year by winning Wimbledon.''

Playing her first tournament in more than a month, Williams defeated Lina Krasnoroutskaya 6-4, 6-2 in the second round of the JPMorgan Chase Open on Wednesday night.

``I didn't feel too good out there. I was definitely very rusty,'' said Williams, who broke the 18-year-old Russian three times. ``I made tons of errors.''

She also had eight aces to go with four double faults, all of which came in the second set, when Williams faced the only two break points on her serve.

Williams, who won here in 1999 and 2000, played with a white patch on her right knee. She said her knee became swollen in Los Angeles, and she was seen by a doctor.

``I had a little tweak in it, maybe, oh, last week,'' she said. ``This is just prevention. I hate wearing things, but my trainer is forcing me to do it. It's just a taping.''

Typically, Williams takes a month or so off after Wimbledon, and returns to the WTA Tour at Manhattan Beach, not far from her childhood home of Compton.

``This always happens the first time back here in L.A. My first match is always a little rusty,'' she said. ``But normally I'm able to pick it right back up the next time around because I get to realize some things I would like to work on a bit more.''

Williams, the top seed, plays No. 15 Nathalie Dechy of France on Thursday. No. 2 Jennifer Capriati plays No. 16 Tamarine Tanasugarn of Thailand, and third-seeded Lindsay Davenport takes on No. 13 Tatiana Panova of Russia.

Krasnoroutskaya is making a comeback of her own. She hadn't played since the Australian Open in January. She got a spot in that tournament after Williams pulled out with a twisted ankle. Krasnoroutskaya then sprained her left ankle in a first-round match and was forced to retire.

:) I hope so she's ok!! KEEP KICKING BUTTS!!! :bounce:
