A very poor draw for Lucie. Once again, she will lose more ranking points. I am praying she can get by Koesl in the first round. It's definitely a match she should win. The question is whether or not she can. However, in her next round she'd face Ivanovic, last year's finalist. I would be fine with this tournament, personally, if Lucie can put up a solid performance against Ivanovic. At least we'll get to see her on TV. But right now I'm just focusing on her first round match.

She's in by far the worst half of the draw. Serena, Venus, Jelena, and Ana are all in that one half.

Don't like this draw at all. Poor girl just can't get a break it seems.

I am waking up really early tomorrow to watch Lucie, hope she won't disappoint me like I did when I woke up early for her match against Kuznetsova in Dubai. Good luck Lucie!

What did I say? She always performs on the big stage. ;)

Great performance, well done Lucie! :yeah: However she now plays Ana, my favourite. Man I hate it when that happens, especially so early in tournaments.

May the best woman win! :)

I'm very happy with Lucie. She got her first serve percentage up! And really gave her a thrashing.

But 4 winners to 24 unforced errors won't cut it against Ivanovic.

I don't care if Lucie loses against Ivanovic (as that is mostl likely). BUT, I want her to show us some of that form that made her play one of the best matches at Wimbledon last year. Make people in the tennis world start noticing her again. Get some reputation back.

That must be wrong. Nobody would win by this margin with such stats.
To beat Ivanovic, who will pummel to Lucie's weaker backhand side, she needs a miracle. Although I noticed that Ivanovic prefers to hit inside-out forehand than usual crosscourt one.

Is somebody saw the match of Lucie?

Really, the chances of Lucie winning are so slim. But if she plays well, she can make it a close two setter. And against the defending RG finalist and #2 player in the world, that's a great thing.

Janine, do you know who Lucie is playing doubles with here?

Lucie will play with her best friend Petra Cetkovska but the draw is difficult. They face another friend Kveta Peschke with Rennae stubbs in the first round

That is a great picture, one of the best I've ever seen of her I think.

I have this strange feeling that she is going to play really well against Ivanovic, but my head is telling me that she will lose easily. Oh well, there is no pressure on her to do well whatsoever. I just hope she has fun as it will most likely be on Chatrier or Lenglen.

At least she won a round, wouldn't have been good to bomb out in the first round of the first two slams of the year.

Love the pic. And it's so great to see Lucie looking happy on the court again. :D

I'm not going to get my hopes up against Ana. Last year Ana gave Lucie a bad defeat in LA that sort of started this downhill slump, so it would be justice if Lucie rebounded.

This year in her better weeks Lucie has a habit of winning a first round somewhat promisingly, and then being beaten resoundingly by top players she used to trouble (Jankovic) or even beat (Kuznetsova). So all I'm hoping is that Lucie will play well against Ana.

On the bright side, Lucie's match percentages are good. In fact, they're better than Ana's were in her first round match. Ana's first serve % was low and she hit more errors than Lucie. Lucie will have to maintain those aspects head-to-head to have a fighting chance.

Go Lucie! :bounce:

I don't mean to be negative, but I don't even think Lucie can give Ivanovic a second thought. One good win isn't going to cut it. We got excited when Lucie won in Dubai, but then she was thrashed by Kuznetsova. Then we got excited in Miami, and Lucie lost badly to Jankovic. I just am not expecting much. I would love for Lucie to play well, but the Lucie we saw this time last year is nonexistant at this point. I see a scoreline around 61 63 for this match. But Lucie did win her first round, and there are a lot of positives that can be taken from this. I guess when a player consistently loses, when they have a nice win, we start having wishful thinking. Even if she loses, it won't be like it usually is: 1 step forward, two steps back. Losing to Ivanovic at Roland Garors is no shame, so I'll be a little excited when Wimbledon comes around. This tournament, no matter what the result is to Ivanovic, has been a good one. A first round loss would have really sucked. But a second round loss to Ana isn't terrible by any means.

But I really hope Lucie proves me wrong come Wednesday. :)

DISASTER so far for Lucie. Honestly, I wish they'd change courts. This has got to be one of the worst four games I have ever seen. 4-0 15-0 for Ana.

CRAP. :(

Lucie cannot return serve.

Robert-KimClijst
May 28th, 2008, 03:18 PM
:aparty: No bagel for Lucie! She got a game. But the unforced errors. Ah!

Ivanovic is playing flawlessly. Crud.

6-1 Ana. COMEBACK TIME LUCIE. I doubt it. :(

And Lucie loses 61 62. I wasn't expecting much more.

Lucie can play some challengers and begin training on grass. She has 4 weeks of training to do!!

And kudos ot Ana, who didn't play bad in the least bit.

Now, there is one miniscule positive to take from this match. I could tell that Lucie was TRYING to change her game slightly. She wasn't going for winners on every point. Sure, she played crappy, but she was trying for some change. And she didn't get too frsutrated. So at least she isn't being stubborn when it comes to her game.

ouch! feel sorry for Lucie: she went in with so much confidence and elan, and now this thrashing...:awww:

Sally Todd
May 28th, 2008, 07:28 PM
Well...Lucie has improved from this kind of play before. Her forehand isn't at full firepower by any means and she had no speed or anticipation. Also her second serve was tee-time for Ana. All that can change with hard work.

As for the returns, who knows.:shrug: A Safarova return of serve is like no other.

After Wimbledon and especially the USO, Lucie's ranking will be lower but she'll have very little to defend for almost an entire year. I hope she sticks it out and begins taking the road back.

Time to do a repeat of early 2007, Lucie. Get in horrible form and drop really low in the rankings then come storming back! But stay there this time. :o

At least she won a match, like I said before. Good luck on the grass.

Yesterday, I was in Roland Garros and I could see Lucie's match so I was very happy :).
Unfortunately the match didn't last a very long time and Lucie didn't play very well but ana made a good match, she was really aggressive and didn't leave to Lucka a lot of chances. In any case, ana remains number 2 in the world and Lucie is in tough moment so I didn't have many hopes but the score remains difficult.
During the match I tried to encourage Lucie in shouting “Allez Lucie" but it was difficult to make the weight against all the fans of ana. But I did not despress and I tried to represent well the Lucie's Fans :p
In conclusion, I was really glad to see Lucie playing but also cheering Tomas who was playing his match on court 2 ,so that was definitely great :)

At least you got to see her win once, Laura.

I'm not too dissapointed. She played really crappy, yeah, but Ana played well and Lucie was trying to change. In the long run, that will not hurt. Some optimism won't hurt.

Lucie should follow her friend Petra Cetkovska's path. Petra has almost past Lucie in the rankings now with RG results (Lucie projected at 47 and Petra at 51).

Petra was struggling but has turned her year around by playing challengers to get matches. Since then Petra's results have been awesome over the past month, first tour QF in Fes, won $50K Bucharest and $50k Saint-Gaudens. Sure in those $50Ks she only beat one top 100 player but she had to win tough matches against a combination of experience (Bovina) and rising youngsters (Pavlyuchenkova). This gave Petra confidence resulting in her RG run.

Iveta Benesova did the same thing. She was really struggling and her ranking dropped. Went back to challengers and now is 48 about to pass Lucie. Iveta was number 126 in March and a had a 5-8 season record. Then she won $50K Latina, was a finalist in $75K Torhout, she didn't play a single top 100 player in those 2 events. But getting the match play and winning those matches gave her huge confidence in her game. Result = Final in Estoril, fantastic win in Fed Cup, 3rd round at RG and back in the top 50.
