Sixteen year-old Elena is at a career high ranking right now in juniors of #15 but keeps rising.

She won a GA in Brazil in March, beating Chala, Konta, and then Jovanovski in the final and then took some time off (possibly for school?) before returning last week at a G1 in Italy losing easily to Burnette.

Hopefully she is back in form this week at the Italian Open, another GA.

GA Italian Open 1R: [5] Elena Bogdan d. [WC] Claudia Giovine 6-4 6-2

Good start over a wild card, hope she is ready to go now because the real tournament starts. Nadia Lalami awaits her in the second round, haide Elena! :D

You don't need to go into a player's forum and criticise their game.

You don't need to go into a player's forum and criticise their game.

I am expressing my oppinion, since iPatty hasn't seen her play. And player's forums/threads aren't only for "Well done" or "Good luck" (Support).

May 22nd, 2008, 08:49 PM
I appreciate Gigi's feedback, I was wondering how she played.

She is still young and has time to develop her game.

Good luck in the quarterfinals, Lena. :yeah:

Tough match but good job! She definitely deserves this final, although I think Simona may be too much for her. We'll see!

Jun 6th, 2008, 01:14 PM
excellent job, Elena!! ;)

Jun 6th, 2008, 01:56 PM
Tough match, she's showing a lot of heart in this tournament.

It would be so cool to see her win, but I like Simona a lot too so either one is fine with me. This has been a great event regardless.

Still rooting for Elena though, haide!

Jun 6th, 2008, 02:33 PM
There are some quotes from Elena on the ITF Junior website after her win over Oudin.

“I was born on this surface,” said Bogdan. “I have played only on clay for my whole life. I played two weeks only on hard-courts and all my life has been on clay. It was an advantage today.”

Bogdan was quick to thank the ITF and the Grand Slams for their help in her budding career. “It’s a very important experience and a very nice experience. We are like a family together. We support each other and the coaches are very good,” she said. “I want to thank all the coaches of the team because they support us all very much. It’s so good, it’s great.”

There is also a picture of her in that link. :)

Jun 6th, 2008, 02:43 PM
I have seen her playing and I like her style of game, she is smart on court and moves so well on clay.
Great drop-shots,solid from the baseline, nice touch in the net.
I watched in a Grade A tournament in Brazil at least twice matches of her.

I wrote in Roland Garros juniors thread before that the tournament started that she will do well in there and reach far, hopefully she is doing so well :yeah:

Jun 7th, 2008, 12:37 AM
“It means very much to me to be in the final,” said Bogdan. “I’ve never been in a final like this and also playing against another Romanian, a friend of mine means it’s going to be a very big match. It never happened before and it’s great.” Bogdan beat Lenka Jurikova of Slovakia 7-5, 4-6, 6-4 to earn her shot at the title and afterwards she admitted that the occasion had very nearly got to her in the semi-finals. “Today I was a little bit nervous. I don’t know why, but I was like dizzy because I was so nervous and I called the doctor. He gave me a pill but I think I was just a bit too nervous. It was good that I won.” When asked how she got past her bout of stage fright, Bogdan laughed and said: “I didn’t! I just fought and I tried to play my game and that’s how I got through. I’m a little bit tired after this match but I will recover.”

Bogdan and Halep are on good terms away from the court and once shared a coach, so there should be no surprises when they face each other on Sunday. “We are friends, we know each other very well,” said Bogdan. “I don’t think it makes it harder that she is a friend, I think it will be the same. It will be good that I know her game and that might make it easier but then she also knows how I play so we will see.” Bogdan also knows that she will have her work cut out against Halep, who has been enjoying a rich vein of form since the European clay-court season began and has won her last 11 matches, including a tournament victory in the Grade A Trofeo Bonfiglio in Milan.

Two pictures of her this time, she really wanted this final it seems. So emotional. :awww:

Jun 8th, 2008, 02:35 PM
Elena lost the final 6-4 6-7(3) 6-2, but she fought so hard and gave Halep her toughest match of the week.

She was down 6-4 5-2 and I thought she would pull a Safina. :p But Simona was just too strong in the third set, hats off to her.

Fantastic week for Elena, and there are sure to be some pictures soon.

Jun 12th, 2008, 05:25 AM
There are ten or so pictures of Elena on flickr.com, search her name and then choose "Most Recent" and you will see them. On a side note, she lost in the first round of a G1 in Germany this week, but I am not too worried about it. I am sure she was exhausted mentally and physically after such a taxing week. If she loses first round of her next tournament then I will think she is a one-surface wonder. ;)

Jun 23rd, 2008, 08:49 PM
Elena is into the third round in Roehampton this week.

Jun 29th, 2008, 02:52 AM
I saw Elena today at Wimbledon. It didn't go at all well. She lost 6-2 6-1 to Kristina Mladenovic in the junior Wimbledon event. She clearly had fitness problems and had the trainer on to help with what appeared to be either an upper thigh or lower back problem. She didn't move terribly well and looked pretty downcast. Credit to her for finishing the match. I could still detect quite a bit of talent and wouldn't read too much into this scoreline. She obviously has a decent future. I do get the impression though that clay will be a better surface for her than grass during her career.

Jun 29th, 2008, 04:42 PM
Oh so then that's what happened. :( Thanks for the report. Poor Elena! Better luck next time and get well!

Reports on the GM said Elena was playing like a pusher. Is this true? From the clips I saw, Elena seems to be quite aggressive.. or maybe that's because its on clay.

Elena is playing in the Masters Romania this week and, thanks to bestcormo, we have some results.

Group 2: Agnes Szatmari, Irina Begu, Mihaela Buzarnescu, Elena Bogdan

Elena Bogdan - Mihaela Buzarnescu 6-2 6-4
Elena Bogdan - Agnes Szatmari 6-3, 6-1
Irina Begu - Elena Bogdan 6-4, 1-6, 6-1

Good wins for Elena and not a bad loss against a nearly Top200 player. Will go through to the semifinals against probably Niculescu.

Nov 29th, 2008, 02:36 PM
Monica Niculescu d. Elena Bogdan 62 62

Surprised she isn't playing the Orange Bowl, she could lose her Top5 junior status.

Plays Brittany Sheed next.

I think she has a real shot at RG juniors but I would like for her to just improve her game so she can be more successful at the senior level.

Pretty good win, now she is the highest seed left in the draw after Lertcheewakarn was knocked out. Robson lost too so a great chance to pick up a G1 title before AO.

Jan 27th, 2009, 01:36 AM
Lost to Kichenok last week but scored a good win today over Isabella Holland 61 57 61 - now into R3 of AO juniors.

Jan 28th, 2009, 01:50 PM

Jan 29th, 2009, 12:38 AM
(5)Laura Robson (GBR) d. (4)Elena Bogdan (ROU) 63 25 ret. :sobbing:

Elena was two points from the set when she retired, it must be quite serious. :( I think she had a great shot at making the final here too, she seemed to have this match under control. Get well soon.

Jan 29th, 2009, 12:45 AM

I hope Elena is okay and recovers quickly from whatever caused today's retirement.

Jan 29th, 2009, 12:49 AM
From BBC:

"Unfortunately Bogdan turned her ankle and couldn't put any weight on it. I didn't see it happen, but if she had got through two more points she would have come off for the heat, so it must have been bad."

Poor Elena, that must have been bad....

Jan 29th, 2009, 01:09 AM
Sounds like a pretty bad sprain, I hope she heals quickly because she seemed to be rounding into form nicely.

Jan 29th, 2009, 01:18 AM
I'll just add this here as well, more detail from the BBC:

"Bogdan was leading 5-1 in the second set and had deuce when she turned badly on her left ankle. She limped back to her chair and had treatment from the doctor and physios.

"She wanted to continue because she knew if the match went to one set all, the extreme heat policy would be enforced the players would be brought off.

"So she limped back to the baseline and played four more points (actually winning two of them) before the doctor walked onto the court and basically forced her to retire.

"Bogdan was in tears and her coach was shaking his head but she was in no position to play and for her own good it was the right decision. Referee Scott Ray has just confirmed that the Doctor has the power to take such a decision if it's in the player's best interests."

 Seriously bad luck...

Jan 29th, 2009, 01:06 PM
Such a shame... She could have had a great result here.
Well, hope she recovers soon!

Jan 29th, 2009, 04:22 PM
Oh man! What a waste, for a moment I thought she had heat illness. Good luck in recovering Elena. Hope she wins RG this year :)

Feb 19th, 2009, 07:35 PM

$25K Cairo Q1: Elena Bogdan (ROU) d. Julia Babilon (GER) 64 63 :)

Good victory, Babilon is a talented player. Conny Perrin is up next, I don't think it should be too much of a problem for Elena especially on her beloved clay.

good luck Elena !

Elena Bogdan (ROU) d. (14)Conny Perrin (SUI) 61 64

Mar 17th, 2009, 02:03 AM
Does playing qualifying count into her tournament limit? I hope not

May 13th, 2009, 01:02 AM
Sorry for not updating this thread in a while.

Elena is currently in $10K Bucharest and she won her R1 match 61 64 over Simona-Iulia Matei. She needs to start transitioning better into the pros, I thought she would have a much better clay season than she currently is.

May 13th, 2009, 03:13 AM

Q1: (12)Elena Bogdan (ROU) d. Francesca Bernardi (ITA) 61 61 :)

Nice to see her in a $25K. Unfortunately she has a very tough Q2 match against Nastassja Burnett in the next round.

Aug 2nd, 2009, 12:42 PM
(12)Elena Bogdan (ROU) d. (5)Nastassja Burnett (ITA) 63 62

Saw the whole match; my first time seeing her play in a little over a year. The improvements in her game are quite obvious: her serve is much better and her forehand has developed into quite a potent weapon. Her backhand will be very attackable on hardcourts, but her half-pace junkballs off that side let her back in several points.

Should be alright if she can get a decent match in MD. :)

Aug 2nd, 2009, 03:49 PM
thanks for the report! any pics or vids of Elena?

Solid start. I wouldn't think Floris in the next round would be too tough but I thought the same when Halep played her in this same tournament in 2008. 15 points would elevate her ranking nicely.

Elena will take part in Canadian Open and US Open junior tournaments. I wish she would concentrate on the senior tour and play in Katowice or Maribor but if her team thinks this is a smart move, so be it...

Aug 30th, 2009, 05:39 AM
She could do well in those tournaments, secure a top 10 ranking in juniors & probably get JE wildcards into tournaments next yr. That must be one of the reasons she's playing juniors instead of ITF in addition to her tournament limit due to age.
