Grand Slam time again! Will Chaky make it again to the QF and get a beating from her perennial QF nemesis Maria? ;) :tape: Or will she crash out against some Cibulkova-like young hopeful on Week 1? :help: Yeah we all know Rome didn't turned out to be the fairy tale that we wanted it to be for Anna but at least she has showed strong signs that she's getting out of her awful slump. Let's see if she'll follow-through on her slight resurgence of form at RG's red clay. :)

Wow! That's great! Shows that Anna's very committed on making it far in RG. :D Besides Anna could use a bit more top spin on her shots especially on clay. It would help cut down the gazillion of errors that she tends to make when her timing is off.

I'm a little worried, Nuria is a clay court specialist, I saw her play here (vina del Mar) and she won't be easy..... nevertheless it's a good Draw for Anna ;)

Wintermute

Nuria had a good Fed Cup performance recently against China but that was on indoor hard court. She won the Tier III in Bogota earlier in the year but the highest ranked player she beat was #63. She's lost her last three clay matches including a bagel from Alona Bondarenko. The last loss was in Berlin to Angelika Bachmann, ranked 175, in straight sets.

Anna should have too much class for her even if it is clay. My only concern would be Anna's habit of losing the plot in the second set and making it more difficult than it should be.

Uhm, interesting news for Doubles, thanks Kampi! My two favourite top players team up, hope we can see also 2-3 victories in Doubles and obviously in singles for both.

Single draw for Anna is not so easy in my opinion, because Kanepi, Medina, Pironkova, Chan are all in form at the moment, but first win with Llagostera Anna!

It's good that Anna is in the easier half of the draw but Sharapova is in there so ...Anyways it's a long way to go until the semi-final so I'll worry about it later. ;)

Anna's draw seemed to be littered with players who have some aptitude on clay (Vives, Medina, Pinonkova) although none too powerful. It still makes me uneasy though since these players can stay in rallies that last for ages. I've also noticed on Rome, how she rarely slides on clay. I hope somehow she'd learn to slide more while on Justine's academy, this can be really helpful when you want to stay in long rallies on clay (heck even on hard courts! see:Sveta, Jankovic, Kim).

JJ and Anna playing doubles together is great for me. Two of my faves! :)

the singles draw for anna, is great realy, i mean she should make the qtrs. if her head is in it and she in some kind of form i expect her to reach the qtrs. though 1st match is tough and needs to be passed safely before looking ahead.

the doubles is great as well, to me its no suprise that anna made the semi's of rome because she played doubles. i know she lost her only doubles match but it was competitive tennis on a match court, which i think pulled her through the rome draw in the end, that she had had enough time on the clay returning and serving to tough it out. i know her singles match is 1st in paris but if she can get through it i think the doubles can only help. plus i love jj and anna playing together im sure they will have fun.

good luck tomorrow anna i wont be in so please win so i have something nice to come home to!

Anna plays Kaia Kanepi tomorrow. They are third on Court 7.

I'm not sure how this will go. Kaia's had some reasonable results during the clay season, qualifying for Berlin and Rome. I'm hoping Anna will make this an easy straight sets victory. If you exclude Fed Cup, Anna's last eight tournament matches have all gone to three sets!

Yay the sun finally came out (or at least the clouds did not open up) and Anna has pulled off a round 1 victory. Another 3 setter too, at least I guess we all know that Anna should have the stamina to go the distance with anyone since she has had so much practice at it lately.

I hope she wins the next one in straight sets though I will take any win at this point. If she goes 3 sets all the way I worry about her health as there is a lot of tennis to be played here over the next 10 days or so.

Good luck in round 2 Anna!

Just watched the Vives match, TTC replay. Too many DFs of course but the wind was troubling a lot of players. My thoughts on her match against Kanepi. Good Chaky should win this in straight sets but Bad Chaky will probably show up in the middle of the second set and fire up a dozen double faults so it'll be another three-setter. Kanepi's strung together a few wins on clay this year so I'm not surprised she made things hard for Anna. But Anna really makes things hard for herself. She had a set point that she didn't take. She only converted 3 of 11 break points. And she came apart in the tiebreak.

Who wants those byes or easy quarters, Anna needs much practice and tough draws to become a better player on clay if she wants to achieve something on that red stuff, she just isnŽt at home on clay. Latest News: Anna will move to Belgium and get a coach from Ju's Academy

Gloomy Anna

Bart Lagae | 30 mei 2008 om 12:52

In earlier days there was the beautiful Anna with two n’s, now there is the beautiful Ana with one ‘n’. But we are talking here today about the sad Anna, again with two n’s. Soon she will probably move to Belgium.

Does Anna Chakvetadze usually walk around like she's just been told her favorite dog has died, yesterday, when we met her for our interview she looked even twice as sad.

Leaning in a little leather chair, she just answered the questions about her match with a simple “yes” or “no”. As the #6 in the world, she was the highest ranked player who lost in the second round in Paris.

Chakvetadze, the player with the longest plat in women’s tennis history, is perhaps the most talented of all the Russian women tennis players, but for a year her tennis (development) seems to have got stuck. The 21 year old from Moscow got coached by her father and still has difficulty to control her emotions. Last Thursday, after her loss with 64 76 to Kaia Kanepi from Estland, she bursted into tears again. In an effort to climb out of her slump, she has now resorted to nobody less than Carlos Rodrigues. The man who would never coach someone else than Justine Henin.

“As you can see, I'm in need of a good coach,” said Chakvetadze. “And Carlos is a good coach.”

This morning, Carlos affirmed the news, but was quick to add he didn’t feel like traveling around the world with her. “She gets a coach from the Academy. In between the tournaments I can guide her here in Belgium. But she will have to accept she will have to make a lot of sacrifices. She has great potential, but is physically not in good shape.”

The collaboration also means that gloomy Anna will move to Belgium. Or, how our country, after Kim and Justine, will get a “Belgian” successor after all.

It's difficult to know what happens to Anna, but if the main problem is physically I think it's good, it's better than mental weakness or game involution.

By "physically not in good shape" I think he means nowhere near as fit as Justine was. It's all relative- I don't think he would think any women was fit enough in comparison to the girl he's been coaching. I wonder what he would say if he had to coach Marion or Ahsha? :tape:  To me, Anna's problems are definitely mostly mental, but perhaps by becoming extremely fit the mental fitness will follow? Going through hard physical training may result in more mental toughness? Here's hoping.

Hey everyone! I'm back! ;) Chaky's lost for me is sooo...I don't know. Truei, it's disappointing but I still haven't thought about it that much. Maybe because there's not much to think of it. Rome performance aside, I guess she really just sucks on clay. Plus add the fact that she hasn't been on top form since last summer and that Kanepi is also a good clay courter.

So as they say, Bring on the grass!!
