Anyway, am I the only one that wants Jelena to do something drastic to her hair? As in, cut it short and go brunette? :hearts:

What do you mean, "go brunette"?? She's already brunette! Unless you mean, lighten it. I don't think she should do anything to the colour, it wouldn't look natural on her, but I do think I'd take about six inches off of it if I was in charge of such things. :)

I am very much enjoying the results of the "Which Serbian will win a GS first" poll in GM

I enjoy it, but it only leads me to the same conclusion I've always had: WTA fans have the shortest memories possible. Before Rome, where Ana actually had a better red clay result at Berlin and had been having a significantly better year than JJ, that poll would've been a landslide in the other direction. But one loss to Pironkova for Ana and after JJ's win at Rome...all hell breaks loose. "I'll believe it when I see it" shall be my line and I'll stick with it until it needs to change

I agree. I remember a thread in GM showing outfits for the upcoming season and none of the RBK sketches that were shown were actually worn by the players. Like, there was some green two piece thing for Vaidisova and two variations of a red dress for Momo and JJ. And I never saw JJ wear red, although she did wear a coral top to practice a couple times :o

I didn't vote in that poll. I have no problem picking JJ in our Pick Thread but somehow each time I'm certain JJ would win a match and I go vote on GM poll somehow she manages to lose. The latest example was that Berlin QF vs. Dementieva. So, I've decided not to take part in any poll concerning RG. Plus, I'm just not sure what to expect. I know she can win RG but it's JJ...

@Bruno, Ana was in poor form even in Berlin and I'm sure some of those posters who vote there know that. And she's not that popular on GM lately.

The ability to win a GS or not hinges on mental toughness, and dispite JJ's numerous picnics I'm pretty sure she has the edge over Ana in that respect. In both GS final's Ana's made she's just crumbled. IMO, she's lost before she's even walked on court. In in both of the GS's that Ana's made the final in, JJ's lost in the semis to the eventual winner. So that's not JJ playing worse than Ana, it's just an unlucky draw.

I SOOOOOOOOOOOO BADLY want the two of them to meet in a GS. Despite the lopsided H2H, I'd feel confident picking JJ in our little thread!

I can proudly say I am *not* one to get caught up in hype. A prime example of that would be my feverant dislike of Lewis Hamilton  It's so much more rewarding to support an athlete through thick and thin.

I just don't get the point of the polls, they're all pure speculation. The best thing about tennis is that it doesn't matter at all who's the favourite going in or "who's most likely to". I stay away from all of it.

Wayn77

Mista Crinklybottom, with his numerous (harmless admittedly) threads is turnin it into "JJ Week" over in GM. :D

So a little swell of "hype" is gathering pace, but we know better do we not?

I liked what I saw in the match against Williams last week. Never panicking, nice and focused - you had no idea from JJs expression the state of the match or the score.

I am confident when Jelena does reach a GS final she will perform - end of.

Winning those kind of huge matches is something that has to be learnt, it cannot be taught.

Bruno71
May 21st, 2008, 08:56 PM
I'm really hoping that Sanchez' full-time presence is giving JJ that MENTAL edge she's sorely needed. Ever notice how freely and aggressively JJ played on court with Jamie at Wimby? It's like she feels looser to perform with a friend there. Not that Sneki hasn't been that person, but having someone who's really in tune with your game rooting you on vociferously is such a plus. And of course, someone you can talk to in between matches (not on court at RG).

JJ has a really good chance of winning RG now that Sanchez is back. The improvement in her game is obvious and he's really helped her with the picnics. She's more focused and serious about winning, something we've been dying to see for a long time. And he is so hilarious when he's all nervous and screaming "eso"!

LOL - not related to Alonso are you Cat?

Lewis Hamilton is the real deal IMO. The best way to judge a driver is how they do against their teammate. And last year he outperformed his teammate who was only double world champion Alonso and reckoned to be the best F1 driver around but who was reduced to whining that it wasn't fair that he wasn't getting preferential treatment.

Not saying he is better than Raikkonen - but pretty impressive drive and 3 stop strategy to split the faster Ferraris and hold off Raikkonen in the last GP in Turkey as well.

However I would agree that Lewis Hamilton was fortunate to get his first drive in a competitive car. But maybe that was because Ron Dennis saw him as exceptionally good.

Cat123
May 22nd, 2008, 01:24 AM
I do love the story about him going up to Ron when he was 10 and announcing he was going to drive one of his cars one day! Cocky little shit. ;) I don't dislike him as much as I did, and I don't doubt he's a good driver. Though the Alonso thing was not much to do with Lewis and a lot to do with Fernando throwing his toys out the pram.

Last year Jenson also beat his team mate don't forget. (He has every year he's been at BAR/Honda actually.) It's just that his car was shite so no one noticed! I respect him a lot more than Lewis for many many reasons, but most of all his loyalty and fight. When Honda do finally get their arses in gear (which I don't doubt they will now that Ross Brawn's involved) he'll do some damage. He's an excellent driver, likable, sponsor friendly without being a PR robot (Lewis  ), media friendly without putting his foot in it (Lewis again! ) and, well, just awesome. :worship: I love him more than JJ!!!! Who would have thought *that* was possible. ;)

Yes, I'm a fangirl. So shoot me.

Appologies for the off topicness. That's bound to happen the minute F1 sneaks into the conversation.

I have to admit I am also getting a bit concerned with the JJ fiesta in GM. All this talk about destiny, being the red hot favorite, the stars aligning for her with Justine retired, etc. Even my friend who I have to say is pretty good in predictions had predicted that JJ will win FO. I feel like I'm the only one who have doubts and it makes me think I'm a terrible fan.

Also this may sound weird but all this talk makes me feel like JJ fans are being set up for a big disappointment if none of this pans out.

JJ fans know better than to hop on bandwagons or get over-excited. We watch THE most omnipresent player on the tour religiously, and are familiar with all the ins & outs of her game all too well. We've known all along that she's talented and good enough to win slams, but on the other hand, we know she can also be vulnerable to players she shouldn't lose to.

I've come to the conclusion that the reason so many in GM are excited about JJ right now is because quite a few of them convinced themselves that her spring/summer '07 was a fluke. It's not just that she played well in Rome, she shook off a title drought that left people believing she wasn't championship material after all. Thus are the vagaries of sports fans. The ones who've followed JJ more religiously know exactly where she's at and where she's come from.

I feel exactly the same way, peanuts. All this talk about JJ as the favourite for RG strikes me as completely overblown and is making me very nervous. Not because I (or anyone else here) actually expect her to win it, but because the backlash is gonna be so ugly if she doesn't "at least" make the final. JJ's so completely unpredictable that I can't quite believe anyone's setting her up as a favourite for anything, anytime.

If she doesn't go far, there'll be no backlash, and if she does, then there'll be shock and bitterness. But that's me wanting to go a more subtle route.

The draw for the tournament will take place at 11.30 am at the Club des Loges at Roland-Garros. In the women’s draw it is Rafael Nadal who will pick out the seeds while Ana Ivanovic will do the honours for the men. The non seeded players will be picked out electronically.

The entire draw ceremony can be followed live on the official Roland Garros site by clicking on: (see on Friday)

The draw is always an exciting moment with the world’s top players all anxious to discover who they will be pitted against. And in the men’s draw in particular, we can expect some tough matches as of the first round. Most seeds will be keen to avoid former world top ten player Mario Ancic from Croatia amongst others.

So is Ana doing the draw in Paris or the Euro Song Contest in Belgrade or dashing between them and doing both.:eek:

So who do we want in JJ's semi? Maria or Ana? Maria has been a mildly dominant player this year, but this is not her surface. Beating Ana seems more hopeless with every outing, and she's got an excellent clay court record, despite not looking up to snuff in the last few weeks. It's a bit of a toss-up, and who knows which ones of them, including JJ, will make the semi.

As for the quarters, Chaky seems to be the one who every fan of a top 4 player wants to see, but she's definitely not a walkover. Dementieva is in good form, Serena is scary, and Venus is always tough to beat no matter where it takes place.

I'm hoping JJ draws Vaidisova in the 4th round, though she could be scary if she gets her game back (but Safina, Zvonareva, and Szavay all seem like worse options right now), Chaky in the quarters, and Ana in the semi (what the hell).

About the draw! :excitedsmiley: For me, better to have Maria than Ana in her draw. I'm still not conviced that JJ can beat Ana. While it's true that Ana didn't have a great pre-RG clay season, she's still one of those players who can play amazing tennis out of the blue.

Jelena won't have an easy job, but if she does her best and is lucky enough (with her health, her opponents' bad days and her own good ones etc.), maybe she can pull through. As Markus already said - if you want to win, you have to beat them all.

At least, if she manages to win with this kind of draw no one can dispute her abilities.
And, she really should beat everyone up to QF - she's simply a much better player, notwithstanding how tough and tricky these particular opponents might be. But they might take too much energy out of her. She should also beat Venus, because she's at the moment better than her on the clay, and then... everything can happen after that.

Remember last year when they had tennis players go into a room with two guys and sing some karaoke song? I saw clips of that on Youtube and I'm guessing it was for some show.

You think they'll do it again? What are the chances of getting JJ to make an appearance? I know she has to concentrate on RG but last year Nole and Ana were there and I looked and waited for JJ to be featured but it turned out she wasn't.

I even sent her a question on the SE website asking her if she would do it. If she did go and sing, I would be highly amused

Has Jelena had anything other than an awful difficult draw in any grand slam in the last 2 years. Certainly since I've been really following her going back to RG last year - she's had no luck at all. I mean last year she was pretty well always in the same half as Justine ,Serena and Venus.

And although the luck of the draw should even itsef out over time - Maria does seem to get much easier draws not just once but most of the time.

I really don't think JJ has that tough a draw. It could have been worse. She could have drawn someone like Lucie in Rd 1.(Who knows, Lucie could have played the match of her life) or someone like Amelie or Nadia in Rd 3 or Dinara in Rd 4 or Serena in the QF.:eek:

I don't think she will have too much trouble with Cibulkova. You can't beat Jankovic at her own game when you're a watered down version.Alize is not yet ready for a break through in my opinion. QF - Venus, a player she has beaten 3 straight on clay.Once, you get to the SF, it really is a toss up.So we'll see...:bounce::bounce: Go JJ.

Tricky LL Monica Niculescu first round for Jelena. That shouldn't be a problem for her though. I actually think the draw is quite good for Jelena! Cibulkova concerns me a little bit since they've battled so much before, but I think Jelena will be better prepared for this match and go through pretty easily. Radwanska is another tough cookie, but I think Jelena can handle her also. Venus will be tough, but I'm not counting on her even getting through. I think someone will probably upset Venus before the quarters, like maybe Pennetta or even Mauresmo - I know that sounds a little crazy, but I do think Momo still has a few big wins left in her and when people least expect it, she is more likely to do well. All the way to the title and #1 ranking Jelena!!!

I don't know about that...Niculescu is actually racing up the charts and she gave Ivanovic absolute hell at Fed Cup (5-7 6-4 7-5). Racked up a few top 100 wins in Rome qualies, including Makarova. But on clay, I think JJ should come out on top...hopefully without too much fuss. It's true that Cibulkova is a bit of a poor man's JJ, but she can cause her much trouble if JJ isn't sharp. Same with Radwanska, same with Cornet, who will have home field advantage. Venus could be prone to an upset but I think ultimately she'll make it to that quarter, where she's only ever once advanced past. Should be an interesting draw.

MONICA NICULESCU???????? gaaaaaaaaaah, nooooo!!! :scared::scared::scared:
That's the Romanian girl who gave the world of troubles to Ana in the FEd Cup match against Romania this year! She's one of the stubborn, driven ones, who are not afraid of top players and fight till the end. I guess she' sonly slightly behind Sorana Cirstea, and we all know how tricky an opponent she is.
I don't know about JJ, but for me - this is the ultimate nightmare draw. Why didn't they put Federer in as well.

Then again, her best win is over Makarova? She's still finding her feet as a player...but that could spell loads of picnic/who am I playing trouble for JJ. A 1R loss to this player would have me contemplating religion.

I know, JJ is a top class player, Niculescu most definitly isn't, what troubles me is that we all know how Jelena can be when it comes to early rounds of Slams, so I'd like a hopeless opponent. Those girls who have already proved tricky scare me. I saw her match with Ana - she was like a bulldog (Monica, not Ana  ), shoewing no fear or respect and risking a lot which payed off to the certain extent.
I just menat to say that she's the kind of a player that don't suit JJ in the early rounds, Not because of their quality, but because of Jelena's relaxed approach.

xcrtbckhnd
May 23rd, 2008, 10:16 PM
Niculescu can probably trouble someone with slightly weaker movement, but Jelena is a natural clay court mover and will easily track down those slices and other junk balls and send them back with more than Monica can really handle. I don't think Monica has a very good serve either, so JJ will be all over that as well. 1 & 2, something along those lines probably.

May 24th, 2008, 07:00 AM
Should be an interesting draw.

her style of play is really irritating..and she led by a set and break against vera but lost...
she uses so much forehand slice:( its just irritating:lol:

Well I like Jenson - he used to be my favourite British driver until Lewis came along. And it's a shame he hasn't managed to get a drive with a really competitive car. I'm sure he'd have been better than Coultard of Hill. But I'm not sure that it's loyalty that's kept him from a better team.

I reckon he'd jump at the chance of a Ferrari or McLaren drive. And he's twice illegally signed for Williams to get out of BAR when already under contract - the second time he changed his mind after signing for Williams when he realised they weren't so good and prospects were better staying at BAR.

Mind you at BAR - I loved the way Jenson completely outperformed that "God's gift to any team that's lucky to have me" Jacques Villeneuve - who wasn't a patch on his father.

Perhaps if Jenson had managed to outperform team-mate Ralph Schumacher in his first year at Williams - things would have been better for him. And the really top teams would want him in front of others. But Lewis completely outperformed his team-mate double world champion Alonso in his first year.

Incidentally - Jenson comes from my neck of the woods. I had a friend (who I don't see nowadays) who taught Jenson Button when he was at school.

Anyway I won't kick the naughty cat for hating Lewis.

Cat123
May 25th, 2008, 11:17 AM
I'm not *a* Cat... :(

I'm with Alonso a little bit on the "favouritism" argument, so I'm ignoring the 'totally outperformed' comment. ;)

Jenson has outperformed every team mate he's had *since* Ralph I believe. He stuck that "Dog" of a Honda in places it had no right to be last year. He drove out of his skin on many occasions, but no one noticed.

Lewis had his chance at a title last year and he blew it. I don't expect him to get close any time soon, Ferrari and Kimi are gonna pull away in the standings soon, just watch ;)

Damn, I kinda feel bad for Serena now.

Bud Collins just picked her to win the French Open on ESPN2.:scared:

Seriously, someone should just duct tape that man's mouth.

Better he picks Serena than our JJ though, no? :bounce:

Yeah better Serena than Jelena, true.

Patrick McEnroe did pick Jelena to win it. Not sure how good he is at predictions though.
