Pick Thread Rules & Participants
Welcome to the JJ Forum Pick Thread - Up and running for 2009!!!!

Pick Thread Rules
Very simple - For any tourney we run the pick for, take the draw and pick the winner, by how many sets
And then hopefully we get to pick JJ's progress through to a successful final...
Respond with your picks in this thread and we'll update as we go...:bounce:

Points

5 for correctly guessing how far JJ will progress in a tourney
Submit Round Number, QF, SF, F (i.e. she gets there but loses) or TITLE
Picks open from the date the draw is announced and closed the day before tourney starts

3 for the winning player
+2 for the exact (winning) scoreline (sets only)
0 if your pick loses!!
Picks open from when the OOP comes out and closes based on time zones before the start of play

IF JJ goes out in the earlier rounds/upto Semi Final - we can run the pick for the Semi's and eventual winner ... same rules will apply!

I have the same feeling - I wouldn't be surprised if she went out in the second round or if she won the title...Well, I would be more surprised if she won the title, but that's because I'm such a negative person. :tape:

I guess that if I want my 10 points for JJ winning the title, or at least getting deeper than the QF, I should pick her to win the round 2 with 2-1 and save 17 match points. But, since I know that she's all the sudden healthy, determined and won't be thinking of shopping while playing the match, I'll pick

R2: Jelena def. Whatshername 2-0

uh huh... yeah... noooooo that ain't gonna happen!!! :haha:

BUT - of course come the off-season, I am prolly gonna drop the JJ tournament count (that was only a bit of fun because she was adamant she was changing her ways and dropping the number of tournies this year... ya-right!)

R2 PICK: JJ def. Pennetachuk 2-0

Pennettachuk... the new Eskimo Open Champion, was seen sneezing violently at practice and was heard to mumble "it's the weather" before taking to the practice court with a frozen fish!

In other news... I caught Livescore earlier when it flashed up the match scores and said that play was suspended due to rain.

There's no OOP for tomorrow yet but given that JJ's opponents-elect haven't taken to the court yet... I'll leave the Pick as 9am on her day of play - if she takes to the court in the evening tomorrow after suitable rest for her opponent, then I'll take all posts up to 9am BST ONLY
Edit: JJ is playing 3rd after 1pm - so pick extended - see below

I'll check back here later this evening anyway to summarise the predictions so far...

Yeah... I mean they're due to start Savchuk/Pennetta first thing today and if there is more disruption and JJ isn't slated until tomorrow - I'll look at the OOP and extend the times.

TO ALL OF YOU PICKERS! - PLEASE QUOTE YOUR ORIG. PICK AND THE AMENDMENTS SO THAT I DON'T MISS IT

I'm gonna have to do a lot of this on the fly for Rome so I'll post an amended closing Pick time if we have to chop and change.

Also - I'm back on a crappy project that has meetings to discuss frickin' meetings, so from 1pm thru end of day I'm in back to back calls - so tables will come as and when I can manage them and not as promptly as usual.

The whole unpredictability of the Progress Pick is it's guess work based on whatever is ailing JJ at the time.

QF: JJ def. Venus 2-0

Bruno71
May 15th, 2008, 11:16 PM
Unless JJ wins it in 2 straightforward sets (which against Venus is improbable), I don't see her winning in 3. She's just too run down right now.

Venus d. JJ 2-1

JJ d. Venus 2-0....I think on clay JJ is the better player and Venus, IMO, is not match fit.

I really don't want to pick this one, it's making me nervous. But I flipped a coin and came up with JJ d. Venus, 2-1.

I think I'm going to be flipping a lot of coins during Roland Garros.

RFS

Oh Strategy vs Heart...

Ok ... well if i go along with Bruno (because like Sonja - I'm flippin' coins here!)... I think if it goes to three against Venus, JJ won't be able to hold out, and Bruno will get 5 points anyway for the Progress Pick, so he'll draw level with me.

If I go for the optimistic JJ d Venus - I stay ahead... but again realistically even Venus-spraying-forehands-all-over-damn-place is gonna give JJ a bit of a headache... and Bruno could STILL overtake me anyway because of the damn round Pick.

Jinx Pick.
Sorry JJ, honey... but Williams def Jelena "where are my tissues" Jankovic 2-1

Now JJ - Prove me wrong, girl... but make it up to me in Pick points later

kthxbye

Actually - I have never been so fucking relieved that a "jinx" pick worked out well - When Schorsch was saying that penus (ARF!) was tiring herself out, I was hoping against hope... but then I lost so much heart at the start of the third, I couldn't even bring myself to leave the workmen and turn on the PC - I stayed down there nattering with them for ages!!

JJ is cutting down on the picnics I think. I hope anyway  Yeah, I know she went down 0-2 to Venus in the QF's, but it wasn't like the typical picnic...she played OK, Venus just played better. I honestly think she's cutting down on the huge picnics, but we'll see in a few hours.

Some friends of my dad's who live in London are helping me find accomodation - it's SO expansive to stay in London! I had a fake hotel reservation for a posh hotel near Victoria station (just to be able to get the visa..hush!), but I think I'll be staying in a more modest hotel somewhere in South Kensington (I shall know tommorrow which hotel exactly). I have no idea what I'll be doing there - I guess just walking through the city and being happy. And visiting pubs. I'll see some more thetare plays, for sure. I've always loved British drama - playwrights, actors, directors, old and modern theatre houses - and now I've saved some money to be able to come. Oh, and I adore Diana Rigg, I would go even further than Chichester to see her on stage.

Thank you Markus.

Unfortunately - as we go into the European swing, the timezones bizarrely act against me in terms of flexibility of closing times etc as the days' play will start around 10am BST - so slap bang in the middle of my morning.

I'd like to ask the regular pickers for some consideration - I am not always going to be able to get the predictions/scores out on time if we close the pick at the start of the day's play whilst in Europe.

If JJ's matches are in the morning, and people want to pick for her next round (whether or not her next opponents are known) then go ahead, instead of asking me if I'm going to open the Pick.

I'll take Picks one round in advance unless someone is on holiday...
As always - we Pick for JJ. If she goes out upto/including the QF then we pick for the semis.
If she goes out before the QF, then we break off until the semis.

Thanks in advance for your consideration for the next few tournaments.

Cat123

I thought someone would make an attempt to screw things up for her after the fuss she kicked up a few weeks ago!! But really, draws mean nothing to me. It's up to the players' fitness/mental strenght/self belief that week, not to do with who they come up against. Whenever anyone worries about who they're playing and doesn't give full concentration to their own game it all goes pear-shaped.

Maria had an EASY draw at the USO and she ballsed it up, JJ should no way have got as far as she did on paper at the AO but she suprised everyone. I'm not worried/relieved about the draw for either of them, I'm just taking it a round at a time. If I don't, I might just go crazy!

OK so finally we have what appears to be a *true* draw, so here's JJ's breakdown.

1R: Qualifier :woohoo:
2R: Garbin/Erakovic :woohoo:
3R: Cibulkova :scared: but only a little
4R: Radwanska/Cornet :scared: more...especially if playing "homegirl"
QF: Venus/Momo/Pennetta (Bartoli is injured, I really don't see her coming thru here) :scared:
SF: Serena/Ivanovic
F: Sharapova/Kuznetsova/Dementieva/Zvonareva/Safina/Chakvetadze/Szavay (i.e. a bunch of Russians and a Hungarian)

Could be worse, but definitely not easy.

Aside from the possibility of Venus, the possibility of Momo (or Bartoli should things change somehow) scares me. Imagine how much confidence Momo would have in a RG quarter with the chance to do her best performance there. Well, that may be sort of a pipe dream of mine too

Cibulkova & Cornet...well, JJ plays these types of girls at lesser events, and when it comes down to it, those matches are in her hands. Strangely, I'd much rather see Radwanska than Cornet, but I guess that makes sense right now.

If Bartoli is indeed injured, and Momo can get by Savchuk who's tricky, she should be thru to the 4R. I guess I wouldn't see her beating Venus, but who knows what could happen there...Venus has a toughie with Pennetta prior. Hmmm, I kind of thought her level of play against Casey was the worst of the AO tournament...maybe after the semi, kind of hard to be sure on that one. She should've won that a lot more easily, but it's more that it was a night match. She does seem to do OK in the "hostile" environments...like vs. Bartoli at RG last year or even losing to Venus at USO she looked excited to be there.

For some reason, I think she might beat Ana, but I'm not sure she could beat La Serena.
I have a feeling Ana might be panicking (insted of exciting ) at the moment since she has had such disappointing results since Miami, and has to defend the final, and the Number 1 is so close, and we all know how ambitious and driven she is...so, I think all that might go against her.
