...It's 6-4 3-6 6-4.

But MAJOR choke from 6-4 *3-0 in second set, I thought she had it in straights! Then she served for it at 5-3 third set.

Great match!! I'm happy she managed to win such a tough match, but i thought she could win in 2... Anyway, 3rd consecutive victory against higher ranked players here in Rome. It's a great result for her!!!
Cool comeback in the match!

Good lord. Niculescu had 1,000 opportunities to choke and she used 999 of them. :tape:

Good job though :woohoo:

2nd. She beat Julie Ditty in Doha. ;)

But yeah I agree about the nervousness, and very understandable. This was a huge match. And also let's not forget the opponent. Craybas has been outstanding all year. She is 37th in the race this year and has been a tough opponent in pretty much every match she has played this year. She took Aga Radwanska to a third set tiebreak and fought back from a big deficit in the third set against her in the final of Pattaya. Craybas is one tough cookie who doesn't know when to give up and for Monica to have fought her way through in three sets against such an opponent.....well I'm just thrilled for her. :bounce:

This was a super win. I love to see Monica winning in three tough sets. And she has done it twice this week. This tournament really has been like a coming of age for her. That Monica has the talent to be a top player is without question, it is just great to see she is starting to acquire the fight too. :rocker:

Congratulations Monica on your 3rd top 75 scalp this week. Congratulations on showing what a fighter you can be. Congratulations on getting to the top 100 for the first time. I believe you are going to be there a long time.

Monica is a special player. She plays a tennis game that isn't remotely like anyone else's in the top 100. In a world of clones, Monica is unique. She doesn't yet have a lot of fans on this board. This is understandable as she hasn't been televised much at all and she has only this year begun to play tour level events. But I hope this will change. Monica deserves fans. She plays a brand of tennis that had me grinning from ear to ear when I saw her last year. I really do hope those folks on this forum who don't know her and/or haven't seem her play yet do so at the 1st opportunity. You won't regret it. Monica Niculescu rocks. :rocker2:

I didn't see the match, but don't get the impression Monica choked at all. Jill Craybas, is one tough player who fights to the end every match and never gives up. She is one of those players who you know you have a hell of a lot more work to do even when you are a set and break up. Monica winning 6-4 in the third is a fine result with me. I will take it in a second. I always knew Monica was capable of winning against Jill but I never expected it to be easy and I was never surprised when Jill fought back. Monica did what she had to do in the end. :worship:

I see Niculescu on TV when she was against Kirilenko on the main draw of Dubaï last year ;)
But I wasn't impress by her game ...
...It was aginst Kirilenko, an agressive Kirilenko.
Maria beat Monica something like 6/3 6/0
Maybe it was too early to meet a top30 player
It's better now, she will be on top100 !! :)
Hope I will see her again on TV to know how she plays.

I think sadly that is the only time Monica has been in a televised match. It was her 1st appearance in a maindraw and frankly she wasn't quite up to it. Unfortunately as a result this is for a lot of tennis fans their only reference point concerning Monica. One can see in this match that Monica is quite an unorthodox player but she has yet to learn how to make her skills work for her to win matches at a top 100 level.

Thankfully it has been substantially more than a year since that match and in that time Monica has made huge improvements. I first saw her play at Roehampton on grass last year and although she was far from the finished article even then I could tell she had something pretty special and it was only a question of time with her. Monica started playing much more on hardcourts after the US Open last year and the faster surface suited her play much more than the clay she was used to. She has great success playing 25K hardcourt ITFs at the end of last year and she has taken the confidence of these on the main tour level this year.

She is now even getting good results on clay and I believe what has happened is that she is now applying the more aggressive attacking style she was using on grass and hardcourts into her play on clay. :)

Her next match will be against Bammer or Azarenka. Either one will provide a stern difficult test. I am however hoping very hard that Monica can find a way to win. She did come very close to beating Bammer the last time they played. If Monica can win, she will almost certainly be rewarded with a match against Ivanovic, which would almost certainly be televised. Now I certainly wouldn't presume for Monica to win that match, after all Ana is one of the top 3 or 4 players in the world, but if that match does take place it would be a great opportunity for her to show the tennis viewing public just how much she has improved over the last 15 months.
