translation:

—After seeing you play, ¿who used to say that there was no one after Arantxa and Cocnhita?
—Yeah, they were superb and they won everything, but it’s a shame that we’re always being compared to them. At least this triumph against the Chinese team is very valuable in order to get recognized and also to get some help. Many of the people that criticized us is now saying that the Spanish female players are not that bad after all.

—Do you consider yourself the heroine of the tie?
—No. I won my three matches in Pekín, but the whole team deserves recognition. I’ve had good stages on my tennis career –In 2005 she was the 35th player of the world- but on a popular basis I’m living my sweetest moment.

—¿is a win over Russia achievable?
—Even though we’re playing on our favourite surface, it’s going to be very tough. They got a very strong team because five of their players are in the top ten, but they may not have our desire to win and our courage.

—It’s very commendable to get this far being just 1’57 cms.
—My height is a handicap, but that allows me to be master than the other and I make up those shortages with my anticipation. I also have a good backhand that let me win many points. Also when I’m on the mood I have a lot of desire that also allows me to win tough matches.

—Why have you had that many ups and downs on your career?
—I’ve gone through very bad stages on my life. My only brother got killed on a motorbike crash eight years ago and some months later my parents separated. Tennis was my way to escape from that and I managed to get back on track. In 2006, when I was living my best moment, I got two very serious injuries that put me apart the circuit for a year.

—Did you ever think about retirement at those stages?
—No, had I thought about it I wouldn’t have recovered. I had courage and I’m again on the top 100 and I hope to climb some positions on my ranking after this success.

—What are your goals for this year?
—To finísh in the top 30 and to qualify for the Olympic Games. If I do well on my next tournaments -Rome, Strasbourg, Roland Garros and Barcelona- I may be able to do it. I’m going to give everything I can to achieve it.

—Do you ever dream of winning Roland Garros?
—Every night, but it’s very difficult. Let’s hope to reach the quarterfinals this year- What’s missing? To be more regular, because I have many ups and downs. I have stages where I get very good results and some other moments where I just lose my concentration and I may get too passive.

–Why?
–Tennis is very demanding. You spend 270 days per year far from home and sometimes you get too tired of so many airports and so many hotels… Sometimes I awake at night and I just don’t know where I am. But then you just do very well at a tournament and you get so high… You have to stay very motivated in order to win matches.

—How much money do you gain for playing tennis?
—Not a lot. Enough to pay for my flan in Sabadell, because they are very expensive in Barcelona. Being woman, you have to do really well to gain a living. People think that we all earn as much as Nadal or Federer but those are the exceptions. I don’t get any money for publicity. My only prizes come with my results.

—What if you won Roland Garros?
—I’d get a million euros, plus all the publicity that would come with that. I’d be happy just reaching the fourt round -45.000 euros-. That would be enough to pay for my flat and my coach for some months.

—A coach you have to share…
—Yeah, with eight more players. Otherwise, it’s just impossible to afford all of those expenses- Believe me, I’m a tennis journeywoman. Now that I’m in the top 100 I’m on a better situation, but I’ve had to play some tournaments where, even though I won them, I lost plenty of money. That’s very hard. People think that Roland Garros and Wimbledon are everything but there are those horrible tournaments you have to go in order to improve your ranking and you have to go alone…

—Then you haven’t changad your fiscal residence…
—No. I don’t have as much money. It’s just not worth it. But I know of many tennis players and other sportsmen that are living in Montecarlo, England, Andorra…

—Do you agree with that?
—Yes, and I understand they go abroad because sometimes they just think we are idiot or something. If I won the same amount of money that Nadal gets I would change my residence if I could avoid paying for some particular taxes. I’d ask the government to put the elite sportsmen on a special place when talking about taxes. Our careers are very short and we shouldn’t pay 50% of our money. I think that’s unfair because, even though I don’t get that much money, I always pay the maximum and I don’t have an insurance and if I get injured I just have to go with that.

—Is doping a part of tennis?
—Unfortunately it is, as in any other sport. Many players, not being aware of it, just take some medicine to get rid of a cold and then they have to spend two years banned from tennis. There are other that just take everything and then they have very good doctors and no one catches them.

—is it normal to have so many Russian players on the top ten?
—Yes. They’ve gone through very hard moments on their countries, so they have a very winning character and they just hate losing. We live more relaxed in spain and we don’t appreciate that, but they just don’t want to lose any ball.

—Is there a lot of lesbianism on tennis?
—Not much more than in other sports. We share many hours, same rooms… We don’t play a lot of mixed tournaments and that’s a further step to reach love.

—Why are you getting naked on this magazine?
—You make beautiful pictures. Just to sell myself a bit and to see if some enterprise puts the eye on my and I get some contract. I’m not as tall or as beautiful as the Russians, but I got my nice things.

—What will the other tennis players think alter seeing you
—They’ll say that I’ve got nuts for being so daring and they’ll laugh at me. I don’t care about what they think. The most important thing right now is to feel comfortable with myself and to play good tennis.

—Tell me about the joke your cousin made on you some years ago.
—She acted as if she was from the Playboy magazine and I thought that I was going to be on the cover of that month. They even interviewed me on a Spanish program to follow the joke! That’s why I didn’t believe in this report at first when they proposed me.

—Had you played paddle with Aznar, as other tennis players did, would’ve your career been better?
—I’ve never been that popular to play that kind of matches. But I once got a call from the ex president of Balears, Jaume Matas. He wanted to get a pic with me for his electoral campaign, but I refused.

—What do you think about Zapatero’s government designating more female ministers than male ones?
—I don’t care about the battle of sexes. I don’t care about chauvinism or feminism. I just want that the people on those positions are qualified enough, whether they’re men or women.

Thanks for posting the interview. It's often very interesting to hear about what some of the players further down the rankings think, particularly regarding day-to-day life on the tour and how much it costs.

That's pretty bad! I suppose you have to balance the costs against (hopefully) the enjoyment and satisfaction the player gets from playing tennis and winning matches and titles.

well, actually there are three coaches for eight or nine players. they are the "40-15" group and they train in Cornellá, near Barcelona. the coaches are Karim Perona, Alejo Mancisidor and Victor López Morón.
the players are Nuria Llagostera, Lourdes Domínguez, Arantxa Parra, Maria José Martínez, Marta Marrero, Eva Fernández, Inés Ferrer and Laura Thorpe I think.

To be honest with you, I find Michelangelo's David to be more aesthetically pleasing, if at the same time more challenging, because mainly of the fingers, (not their size, but the difficulty of executing them in rock (granite?) with a weak point in it, and feel this, while daring in its way tends to devalue the currency of the female form, which is very beautiful in its own right, especially in the way depicted in Manet's Venus.
