The Stakes: Ranking/Seeding at RG!

#1 Rank. Justine will remain #1 even though she is not playing and has no
points to defend.

#2 and #3 Ranks. #2 Pova leads #3 Ana by just 64 points and neither girl is
defending 2007 points. Ana can retake #2 by finishing two rungs higher if
Pova loses either her 2nd or 3rd Round matches or by finishing one rung higher
if they both reach the QF's. Ana has it tough, though, facing 3rd Round Dinara and QF A-Rad or AChak!

#4 and #5 Ranks. #4 JJ has the early advantage over #5 Kuzy in terms of points
but not necessarily in terms of opponents. JJ has Panetta/Srebotnik 2nd Round
and then Ame/MariaK/AMG 3rd Round. All dangerous on clay. And then the joy of
facing Vera/Venus in the QF's!!! Kuzy should make the QF's but then it's tough!
Kuzy's QF seeded opponents are Serena/Szavay with Alona Bondarenko and Nadia
Petrova in the wings taking shots at the seeds. Kuzy has to clearly outperform
JJ to get back to #4.

#6 Rank. Serena is probably safe at #6 with AChak and Venus a couple of hundred
points behind and Elena not playing. Serena's objective is points! She needs
points to maneuver into a position to challenge for the #5 Rank. She is 500 to
600 points off the mark to do that at this time.

#7, #8 and #9 Ranks. #8 AChak and #9 Venus are separated by 21 points. Whoever
finishes higher in Rome takes the higher Rank. In addition, #7 Elena is a sitting
duck. If she loses the 2008 Berlin Final, AChak and/or Venus will pass her with a
SF finish, If Elena wins 2008 Berlin, then AChak and/or Venus must make the Final
to pass her. Venus's biggest problem getting to the QF's is the red hot Vera in
the 3rd Round. AChak's biggest problem is AChak!!! Can she finally bring it?

#10 and #11 Ranks. Without lifting a racquet, Bartoli will fall forward into the
#10 Rank bumping Dani to #11 after 2008 Rome. Dani cannot defend her 2007 Rome
points due to injury.

#12 and up Ranks. Vera, Dinara and Agnes Szavay will be challenging Patty for the
#12 Rank. It will be interesting to watch these four players.

How about Dinara?;)

Wow! Dinara has caught Patty and Vera and Szavay are close behind!

The question is: Expand the list or cut Patty free and wait till they make the Top 10? Lets see how much time I have in the next day or so. It's going to be exciting to see how these girls shake it out! It seems to be a serious and strong attack for Top 10 status.

Venus will surely get the #8 seed for RG. Chakvetadze sucks so bad she'll probably bomb out in the second round again, or at least the third round.

Will be an interesting battle for #2 this week, too.

The Attack on Patty for #12:

Both #13 Vera and #15 Agnes Szavay have an opportunity to disloge Patty
at #12. Vera faces Venus in the 3rd Round and Agnes faces Serena in the
3rd Round. It isn't going to be easy!

#14 Dinara is a bit behind the other two in points because she is defending
2007 Rome QF points but has Ivanovic in the 3rd Round. Berlin showed what
can happen in that match!

The assault should be interesting. If not in Rome, then ... Patty better
get going if she wants to remain near the Top 10.

Dani's dropping to 2,122 pts, not to 2,102. Her 17th tournament is still 60 pts worth.

There's some other small errors too. I've indicated them in red. In most cases you seem to have forgotten to subtract the player's 17th tournament when the Rome 2008 result supersedes it.

Ana, AChak and Bartoli - Mishandled Rome replacing 17th, as you said.

this can be the expected draw for the top seeds [the first 4 matches...the sf and final r going to be equal for everyone]

ivanovic- bye, pironkova, azarenka, radwanska, [both the teenagers are dangerous] sf -kuznetsova or serena

serena- bye, bonderenko, szavay, kuznetsova [all three dangerous] sf-ivanovic

venus- bye, stosur, zvonereva, jankovic [all three dangerous] sf- pova

jankvic- bye, pennetta, anabela medina/makiri, venus [venus is dangerous...amg a bit if she plays well] sf-pova

sharapova- bye, dulko, wozniacki, bartoli/patty [to be honest all of them are not that hard..dulko might stretch her a bit] sf- jj/venus

as usual you can see who has the cake draw and who has the tough draw..

The Stakes.

Who would have predicted Pova being No.1 seed at RG? With Justine's retirement
from tennis and Ana's exit from Rome, that is what will happen: Pova has the #2
Rank and the No.1 Seed at RG, regardless of her performance in Rome! Pova is
into the 3rd Round defeating Cibulkova 62 36 64 and breaks the 4000 point mark.

Ana did not compete for the #2 Rank in Rome and will remain #3 after Rome as no
one can catch her. This equates to the No. 2 seed at RG.

Agnes Szavay bowed out of the Pursuit Of Patty but Vera is still in it!

3rd Round: So many interesting matches coming up! Highlights:

The featured nite match: [7] V. Williams (USA) vs [10] V. Zvonareva (RUS).
Venus needs a win to at least stay close to AChak and have an opportunity to
pass Elena in the rankings. Vera needs the win for an apportunity to pass
Patty.

Also, among others, there are some serious matches for a few glamour girls:
M. Kirilenko (RUS) vs [4] J. Jankovic (SRB)
[12] A. Radwanska (POL) vs [6] A. Chakvetadze (RUS)

If you mean seeds at RG, those players should be the top four seeds, no one can catch them. All that remains is that they stay healthy and play RG! 3 and 4 is still being fought over between Kuzy and JJ.

Cornet upsets Kuzy! Kuzy remains at #5 and JJ at #4 (or is it #4 and #3
now?). At RG it's Seed No.4 for Kuzy and No.3 for JJ, for sure.

AChak defeats her doubles partner to pass Elena for the #7 Rank.

Venus pulls within 4 points of Elena with her win over Vera and
Vera falls out of the Pursuit of Patty!

Rome: The Numbers. The Stakes. Quarter Final Results.

16 May 2008

Loose is right, so, from this point on, everyone moves up a Rank position
due to Justine's retirement. I believe the players' final Rank from
Rome will be the Seed position at RG, assuming all the listed players
actually play.

Pova defeats Patty in their traditional 3 set match on clay. Pova has
the #1 Rank. Patty has #11 and maintained her lead over her pursuers.

JJ beats Venus and falls forward to #4.

Serena retires from the QF's injured but falls forward to #5. Cornet
is in the SF's!

AChak ends Pironkova's run as Roman Top 10 killer. After passing Elena
for the #7 Rank, AChak gets to #6 on Justine's retirement.

Venus fails to catch either Elena or AChak but falls forward to #8
anyway, which was her objective in the first place.

The SemiFinals.

Pova v JJ. Pova leads the h2h 4-1, but, JJ is considered by most to be
much better at clay pay. Pova has been on court for 7:38 hours v 4:36 for
JJ; that's three more hours of competitive play for Pova, but, JJ claims
to be sick, on meds, feeling terrible. Pova is #1 v JJ at #3, not much
difference in Ranking. Pova is astoundingly tough mentally and fights
tooth and nail for every point, but, JJ is so solid and consistent
she is mostly immune to those attributes. So, who wins? I don't know!
I'm just going to watch the match - hopefully - and see.

AChak v Alize. AChak has the opportunity to tie Serena at 2836 points for
the #5 Rank with a SF Win! Alize also has an opportunity to move into the
top 20, so she, too, will be motivated to play her best. AChak has to be
feeling her three set matches while Alize rests with the w/o from Serena.
Who wins this one? Way up high, on an itty bitty limb, I'll say AChak!!!

The Final.

It's JJ v Alize! JJ has a day off to focus on how bad she actually does
feel! Alize Wins!!! OR, a nicely rested JJ triumphs over the up-and-comer
Alize Cornet... The Underdogs have been too wildly successful against the
Big Dogs on clay this year to say JJ will walk away with the Rome title.

So what does Lena have to do in Istanbul to pass Anna?

perseus2006
May 18th, 2008, 04:49 AM
Elena is the defending champion at Istanbul. At the very best, Elena will repeat as champion and keep Istanbul's 140 Championship points and remain 101 points behind Anna. She could lose up to 139 more points if she loses her first match.

She cannot pass Anna! Even worse: if she fails to repeat as the Istanbul Champion, she will lose her #7 Rank to Venus for the #8 Rank.

Tough times ahead for Elena.
