Still the player to beat. I mean come on, it's Justine. RG brings out the best in her.

A 4 time winner of a tournament+holding #1 spot is always a threat.;)

For me Justine will always be the favorite at RG.

Third option... I think even Jankovic has more chances than her this year!

May 11th, 2008, 02:17 AM
yes

Dementieva Guts
May 11th, 2008, 02:22 AM
favourite for RG

1. Jankovic
2. Dementieva
3. Chakvetadze
4. Serena
5. Zvonareva
6. Henin

those 6 players have great games for clay, only hard working girls can win on clay. This surface demands a lot more commitments than others, lazy girls don't have a chance. Shaparova, vaidi for example can pack there bags or stay at the hotel!!!:wavey:

O.K. I can live with the others but Chakvetadze as a former tennis player once said "You can't be serious":help:

I agree. I don't think she's the favorite, but she's the defending champion. That has to mean something. I think players like Serena and Maria are more the favorites. Dementieva is sort of, but I think she's more of a dark horse in the running. To me, she's always a dark horse. haha :)

No, because her career has gone down the drain. she'll lose to the first top 100 player she meets

She's the favorite.. how anyone can think otherwise is ridiculous to me. She wouldnt be the favorite if she wasn't so much better than everyone else on clay.

She hasnt lost at RG since 2004!!! 3-time defending champion and who will dethrone her? Serena? Sharapova? Kuznetsova? Ivanovic? None of them has a better chance than Henin

Brett.
May 11th, 2008, 03:46 AM
Nope, she is likely lose to qualifier.

Justine will always be a threat to win Roland Garros, no matter what her form. Just like Venus will always be a threat to win Wimbledon no matter what form she's in.

For sure.

May 11th, 2008, 06:51 AM
Sure she is. :help:

How can you just see one result she made after a long injury-time-off,and rule out her chance completely? She's still one of the best clay courters amongst the active players.

Yes.

To think that the 4-time and reigning Champion
is still not "the" player to beat is absurd IMO.

i have this feeling that she's not going to play the french this year... i see another illness or injury leave of absence for a few months until she sorts herself out... so i dont think she's the favourite to win RG, if she's there or not...

pigmalion
May 11th, 2008, 09:08 AM
She is still the favorite but for the first time in a few years, I'm doubting she will gonna win RG.

Direwolf
May 11th, 2008, 10:39 AM
IMHO:

1- Serena
2- Ivanovic
3- Jankovic
4- Dementieva
5- Safina
6- Sharapova
7- Henin
and since shes out...
Venus could be above her aswell...

Justine right now could lose to any aggressive player

Serena MIGHT...
and yes..
she has a better Chance than Henin to win RG..

Justine isnt Nadal...

Nadal lost because he has been playing 3 weeks in a row
and for Justine to lose to Safina after thrasing Latisha..
and then she withdrew from Rome because of Fatigue..WTF:tape:

Don't know about being the favourite, but a top 5 contender for sure ;)

Justine will win, it looked like she was very tired during Berlin, and I thinks thats because shes training really hard off the court. Her focus is just on RG and Wimbledon. And I think if she win Wimbledon she will be so much better player, she will relax more.

My top 5 is.

1. Henin
2. Serena
3. Safina
4. Dementieva
5. Jankovic

Justine isn't Nadal but that's not relevant. What is relevant is her record at RG.

And how does Serena have a better chance than Justine? Her last red clay title was in 2002, her last time past the quarters of the French was 2003 and she hasn't won a slam title outside AO in 5 years. Not to mention this is her worst surface.
And that is the main challenger to Justine.

I'll take the 3-time defending champions chances over anyone else's. Her competition is not as good as it would be elsewhere.

Not sure about this. Justine hasnt played good at all this year really. She started well winning Sydney and was practically gifted Antwerp (her opponents were ITF players basically) but then hasnt acheived great things. Maybe we will see a new slam winner at Roland Garros or an old fave (Williams anyone?)

I'm sure Justine will be the betting favorite, but the way she's playing, I think there are several players with good chances.

My top 5 is.

1. Henin
2. Serena
3. Safina
4. Dementieva

I see people are starting to jump on the Safina bandwagon

She had a good tournament in Berlin but how many good tournaments has she strung together in her career

Well she is the favourite right now because whatever anyone else thinks - she has the shortest odds. End of discussion. http://www.oddschecker.com/tennis/womens-french-open

Justine is 5/2
Serena is 7/1
Masha is 7/1
Ana is 8/1
Jelena is 12/1

Serena
Henin

Ivanovic
Jankovic

Kuznetsova/Venus/Sharapova/Zvonareva/Dementieva/Safina (take your pick)

Here's the only problem I can see with it: if she's not the favorite, who is? We don't have anyone playing lights-out tennis or looking clearly superior to the entire field (besides Safina, and how long will that last?) like we usually do. I can't really call anyone a favorite at the moment because there are too many potential victors. I can picture around 8 different players winning the French this year, and Henin is one of them, but not a single individual has demonstrated that they are the head-and-shoulders favorite.

i have no idea anymore of who is going to win the french open, right now i could easily see any of the top 10 in the final. just when you think someones hitting form they lose.
i think its wide open, maybe it could be a '04 where theres an unexpected winner, as the 2 best players of the year maria and serena would both say clay is their worst surface and are both prone to odd loses on it.

She's still the fave to me, until she loses there, she will always be the favorite. She is to RG as Venus is to Wimbledon.

azinna

My thinking: Henin is still the player to beat on clay and defeating her on that surface still gives you incredible belief in your ability to win that tournament (see Dinara). Add that it's Roland Garros....well, look she was playing so far batter than anyone else the past few years that she could have afforded to drop two levels and win. If she could get a couple more matches in some other pre-RG tournament, this convo would be over.

Another way to answer the question is to think of who else could be considered a favorite. Or to simply reply that the slam is wide open. A bit premature for all that; the clay season is at around its mid-point. If Serena wins Rome, the calculus changes. Things start to look like her preparation for FO 2002-03. Not sure what I'd think if Dinara picks up the Rome crown. But Sveta could get going. And Henin's fatigue could wear off in time for just enough matches....I'd say she's the fave till that weekend before, when all the results (including seeds and withdrawals) are in....

Sveta will win Roland Garros

There should have been another option

Still the player to beat, top 5 favored to win.
