The top 2 players won 3 of the last 4 majors, 4 of the last 6, 5 of the last 8.
It's been a while since the 2 best players were 1 and 2.
Now Justine has to play like she belongs there, or she will start dropping this fall.

Next week's, so Ana can still get her #2 back (64 points behind and neither player played there last year). Even though with Justine playing so badly it might not be so crucial (for RG)...

Yeah - well deserved. But this is one thing I don't like about the rankings system. You withdraw from a tournament and don't even play and your ranking shoots up. IMO that's wrong. Going up in the rankings should be because you do better than the player you overtake in the last tournament.

It's amazing how high she was ranked at the end of last year. It didn't seem like her results were all that good.

i know! still shows some problems with the ranking system i think... but i think this is how it worked, her 06 was great, finished at number 2 improved on most events she played in 05, and then she started 07 with a final run at the aussie open, an improvement from 06, then a semi at the french, a big improvement from 06.. so those points really carried her through the year, but rightfully so wen she couldnt defend her us open, zurich or linz titles she dropped big time...

So before USO

Maria has Istanbul SF, RG SF, Birmingham F, Wimbledon 4th round, San Diego W, USO 3rd round = 1275 points

Serena has Rome QF, RG QF, Wimbledon QF = 660 points

I'll repeat again : Serena will be number 1 before Maria

why do u stop with serena's points at wimbledon if u count maria's till us open

and BTW after san diego maria doesnt have to defend anything besides YEC. serena has moscow final.

and maria is NOW about 1200 points in front of serena.
so should be no problem for her to be in front of her till 2009 :)

thats no fact! fact is the only tournaments they've both played this year are the aussie open and charleston.. at each event one lost in the quarters while the other won the title... so there's no proof to your fact.. if anything maria will go further than serena due to the fact that her two loses came at one semi and one quarter final, whereas serena's loses came at the quarter final stages... rome will be interesting to see who can go further in the draw...

The fact is you are a Sharapova hater as well.

but that dosen't stop his/her point being valid, if serena plays rome, rg, wimbledon, 2 summer hardcourt tourns the olympics and us open, she has a very good chance to be #1 with very few points coming off through this time.

maria has a very good chance as well, though is hindered by defending more, though is ahead in ranking points, so i would call it even

This discussion is now really silly... With 3/4 of the season to go there are at least 5 players with a realistic shot at year end #1. If you project so far ahead it's not about how much you have to defend, but how much you are going to win.

Whoever wins RG in few weeks will have a good chance and I don't think it will be Maria :wavey:
