This was some great stuff from Lena! Especially in first with no DF, 2/2 on BPs and no BP on her serve. In second a bit more close but at the end a well deserved victory over Berlin Champion! :worship:

In all honesty, I'm shocked that Ana got it to 5-5 in the second set. Her forehand was SOOOO wild. I can't believe how many of them were 5-10 feet passed the baseline.

Congrats to Lena

I haven't watched her for a while, since when did she started serving 10- double faults. And not only that but serving quite good.

Wild, wild, wild forhand. And in crucial games, also couple of backhand errors. Oh well.

well well well well.... whaddya know, str8 sets as well.

That so easily coulda been a piece of piss had Lena not wasted many opportunites, still she was playing the world number 2 for a place in a Tier One final, no one said it would be easy.

Sorry Ana, you keep trying, you keep losing, I am afraid ownage continues and once again YOU HAVE BEEN DEMENTINATED!

Watching this match it almost sounds stupid that Ivanovic is credited for having one of the best forehands in the game. Powerful yes but too inconsistent. Dementieva's forehand on the other hand is pure beauty, especially her crosscourt shots. It's dramatic how effective her serve was too. Should be a good final.

The Russians march on.

Even given that Ana already played a set this a.m. I still expected this one to go three, which it nearly did. So I won't gloat too much, because I respect the effort even though I'm not a big Ana fan.

A title here would be great, but I hope Lena's not peaking too soon. But it would be great if she could claim title #10. It doesn't put you on the GOAT list, but it definitely puts you in a fairly select group.

I think Elena is playing better tennis than she did to reach her GS finals in 2004. She's so much more consistent now, and the serve is not as much of a liability. I'm no longer nervous that every important point might be a DF.

Ana struggled so much throughout the tournament, i guess this loss shouldn't be a surprise. it seems like she just couldn't cope with all the pressure and it showed in all her matches.

Nice play from Dementieva, she was the better player and deserved to win today. Her seasons coming along quite well, but RG's gonna be the real test. I just have a feeling she going to falter on the big stage.

I don't think Ana was that bad, I mean she had more winners than UE. Her forehand was inconsistent only because she kept trying to hit impossible winners from difficult positions. A little more patience and trying to construct points would've helped her a lot. But maybe she felt like she couldn't give Lena the initiative.

Ana must be frustrated she can't figure out Elena yet. I can't see any other reason she'd be crying...

Once Ana beats her, I'd expect her to dominate the H2H, or at least beat her more frequently. But until then, I will enjoy two wins this year over a deserving world #2, especially on my favorite's second worst surface. Although who knows, she's 7-1 on clay this year, maybe the added topspin in her game has helped her clay-court game out?

Ana did well to fight through three tough opponents while she was at a low level. Keep going Elena. :)

Elena was the better player in set 1. She really struck the ball well and was aggressive, mixing up the direction of her shots. In set 2, the turning point came when Elena had numerous opportunities to go up 4-2, but lapsed. Thats how Ana really got some confidence and played a little better. But her forehand was too wild.

Elena was certainly the better player and took on the ball when she needed to. She was also very solid. But we always knew Elena's groundies are world class. Ana needs to rework that FH, but she is a very classy and lovely player. On BP she knew Elena's ball was in (despite being called out) and made no fuss, simply went to sit down (even whilst the umpire was still checking).

If it wasn't Elena against Ana, I would have been rooting for Ana. But good luck to Elena tomorrow... two Top 5 players in a row. Now just needs to up her level as she has a week off next week.

how in the world could the H2H be that lopsided? Ana should be able to eat that serve for breakfast lunch and dinner....

Because Elena has a solid serve she can place fairly deep into the backhand corner wide and has an effective first serve down the T to the backhand.

Ana's power doesn't intimidate Elena, anyway. Even when she serves to the forehand and Ana blasts it back to Elena, she can do something with it, usually.

It's just a mismatch. Ana will figure her out one day, unfortunately.

Derek.

well well well well.... whaddya know, str8 sets as well.

Unfortunately, Lena's worst fan is her "Captain." Really makes me want Dinara to take her out now.

But well done to Lena anyway, she's having a great tournament.

how in the world could the H2H be that lopsided? Ana should be able to eat that serve for breakfast lunch and dinner....

Ana played like crap in this match, her forehand didn't work at all and reminded me of the AO final...when Ana plays half-decent she indeed should make short work of Dementieva on a normal day

This is my 1000th post!

Well, I am very happy for Elena, she has a charming game and she always delivers intense matches. Hopefully she wins it tomorrow but it won't be easy, Safina is playing out of her mind.

By the way, this year it seems Elena reached a mature level...she seems confident out there, without big pressures, playing her game, very consistent and patient. I wouldn't be surprised if she wins a slam playing like this.

Lena is SO GOOD this year! It's awesome, bar a bad loss in Sydney she's having one of her most consistent seasons ever.

Win the title!

God, you're funny. :tape::lol:
Why? I'm sorry you didn't get to watch the match. Ana played well in the second set, she almost won it even. But like I said, she went for way too much. More winners than errors, on clay, vs. Dementieva, is not playing badly.

Ana played bad in every match this week in Berlin, so Elena is simple too good for that level of play (even Szavay also, but she choke). Atleast in this crazy week for favorites Ana survive longer than Nadal, Federer, Henin, Serena...

I wish good luck to Elena tommoroe in final and of course to Ana:angel: in Paris (i realy dont care about her result next week in Rome).

:haha: No squeals and squeaks for her today.

Elena is very very solid. I'm so impressed with her form and points gaining. If only she had this serve in 04.

Elena :woohoo: Win the title girl! :hearts: I love this great, consistent form she is having this year. Not to get ahead, but if she wins Berlin tommorow she makes herself one of the favourites for the French.

Ana  The positive sign is that she got all the way to the SF whilst playing below her best, and that is what true champions can do. Good luck in Rome. :yeah:

wow well played elena...serena has competition in rising up the rankings...at this rate, based on form serena and elena could rplace any of the top5 (bar pova-purely on defending points) by the end of the year or even wimbledon!

and that would be my dream come true.
my girls are playing so well right now, it definitely pays to be a fan of both.
but on the other hand, my distant third, chakvetadze, sucks ass this year. oh well. lena and serena mean a lot more.

serena #1 and lena #2
or
lena #1 and serena #2

Has anyone noticed that Elena has returned to her flashier flat groundstrokes that have become her trademark and made her famous, instead of the top spin she used in Dubai? Her form reminds me of how she played throughout the 2004 Roland Garros. :) Even the female commentator (I think Jo Durie) said "it just comes off the racquet!" And I even remember John McEnroe saying that the way she rotates her body into the ball allows her to not even swing that hard. She's more body and not wrist I'm interpreting that to mean.

I did not notice that. She doesn't look flashy at all, actually. She beat Ana using the same play she did in Dubai...she's maybe hitting a little flatter, but she's mixing up the topspin with the flatness really well. She's sliding and moving great too.

She isn't getting it all right, of course, but I like what variety I've seen in her game in Berlin. She was very one-dimensional in Charleston, which I saw live in person, and I left kind of flat about her on clay. Probably why I complained about her on it so much...

She played a bit flashier against Jankovic, but that's what I noticed.
