Fatigued Henin to face $20,000 fine for pulling out of Italian Open

Associated Press

Updated: May 9, 2008, 6:14 PM ET

ROME -- Top-ranked Justine Henin has withdrawn from next week's Italian Open, citing fatigue, and the WTA Tour said Friday she will be fined $20,000 for the late withdrawal.

On Thursday, Henin lost to Dinara Safina 5-7, 6-3, 6-1 in the third round of the German Open. That loss followed a 6-2, 6-0 drubbing by Serena Williams at the Sony Ericsson Open last month, the worst for a No. 1 player in nine years. Maria Sharapova also beat her in straight sets at the Australian Open.

Before the German Open, Henin took a month off with a knee injury. She had hoped to restore her confidence in Berlin in time for the French Open, which she has won four times.

The WTA instituted a series of fines for late withdrawals in response to a rash of players pulling out of tournaments.

It's a lot of money, but pocket change to her really. She's already made over 450,000 this year in prize money alone.

StupÓd and unnecessary comment. :help:

Justine will be fine. :) She often says that she is very lucky to win so many money by playing tennis, her passion. (honestly I would love to have $20K fine and been paid like 5 millions per year :p )

It's not a fine that's going to affect Justine.
She wants to get to Paris in the best mental and physical state that she can.
How often do you get to go for 4 consecutive French Open titles.
This is a very important tournament for Justine.

She made over 5 million dollars last year.

If you really want to punish Justine make her wear Italian designer clothes and the best makeup Italy has to offer for a WTA press conference in Rome.
She'll play the second round the next time she considers pulling out.

Justine played lights out because she had to pay Pierre Yves a few million dollars.I think he possibly got above $5mil and she has to pay alimony, that girl is still Pierre's meal ticket.
I think she is just mentally tired...poor thing.

:haha: Now that was funny :yeah:

It also made me realize that a lot of the time in your posts when you're ragging on someone, you're being light-hearted. There's no tone or inflection in writing so many times I'd read your stuff as mean-spirited.

20k? Is that it? Maria was fined a ridiculous amount of money for skipping a tournament of which she had no intention of playing in. The WTA knew this, too. Justine was intending to play it and considering this is the first tournament Justine has played in like 3 weeks and she only had to play 3 matches, I think that this whole fining system is completely fucked up. The WTA is making itself look more and more ridiculous on a regular basis. Something has to be done before it's too late.

Justine has every right to withdraw from Rome. I hate this fining thing, but thankfully it won't affect Justine. She is clearly feeling fatigued given her form this year.

She's going for 4 in a row at the French (nobody has won that many consecutive titles at a slam since Navratilova at Wimbledon). She just wants to make sure she is in the best possible condition.
