Is Dinara the first? I assume not, but I can't think of anyone else right now.

Justine herself @ Wimbledon 2007.

Venus probably

No-one has. If you actually think about it, apart from 2007 and 2008, seeing Justine and Serena on the same entry list in any given tournament has been quite a rare thing. It's not all that surprising that Safina is the first.

The surprising thing is that Safina had just beaten Justine and Serena back-to-back, and not Venus, or somebody else :o

whats so magical about 2003? They both turned pro years before that.

Maybe both of them are already slam winners after the year.

well did anyone do it before 2003? Justine was just an average top ten player before 03 though. It wouldn't be the same. Like Arantxa beat Venus and Serena back to back in like 1998 I believe...but...seriously, that's not as big of a deal as when Justine did it last US Open, and no one did it when both girls were at their peak. Wow...dinara...lol who would have thought!

Well, they were never really healthy at the same time and Serena played so little since then. It's not a huge surprise IMO.

The most likely place they'd meet are small tournaments (and they rarely if ever have played the same tournaments outside of slams in that time frame) or slams and out of the 12 slams from 2004-2006, they only played in 6 together.

No one has.
The last time is Kim Clijsters in 2002 YEC.

Since 2003, no one did that.
For Serena only lost 3 times in 2003;
Henin just played 8 events in 2004;
Justine has only lost 5 matches in 2005; 4 in 2007;
Serena only played 4 tours in 2006.
So Safina is first.

And what does Safina get for this outstanding effort? A place in the quarterfinals. What a tough draw to come through. :eek:

erm...a LOT of players. Winning a slam usually means you'll bump into a former slam winners and number 1s, off the top of my head, Clijsters, Venus and Serena all did when they won their slam in 2005, but thats only one example, they'll be many more Im sure.

I think mrserenawilliams meant players that had been BOTH slam champs and no.1 at the time of the match. Since only 15 (or 16) players have been no.1, it's a pretty good achievement but it's happened a fair amount of times.

The only one I can think of right now who beat 3 slam champs and no.1's is Serena at US Open 99 although I am sure there are more.

Irrelevant, since right now beating Henin is about as significant as beating Lourdes Dominguez Lino or some other clay pusher.

That being said, Dinara deserves this title. But won't get it.

Ooops. Pretty careless of me. :shrug:

Yes, semis, well that's not so bad then although after those two wins she does deserve to go further.

Tell me how often and against who Lourdes Dominguez Lino has lost this year? :tape:

Pierce did it in Hilton H. (Seles and Sanchez) and RG (Seles, Hingis)2000.
She also did it at USO (Henin, Mauresmo) and YEC (Mauresmo, Clijsters, Davenport) in 2005.

Interesting observation, hadn't realized it's been six years since someone's accomplished that feat... And who'd of thunk it would have been Safina. :eek:

It's happened a whole slew of times.

In 2001, Henin had neither won a slam or been no.1.

In 2000, Serena had not got to no.1.
