I hope she gets enough rest now to prepare for Rome.
That her leg may be ok and that it's only some precaution.
Let the draw be in her favour now!!!

I don't think she should fear Mauresmo. She isn't really a clay courter and she's been slipping down the rankings.

I could do without Jankovic there again, but she lost to Lena D, so she's far from invincible.

I'm more worried about Medina Garrigues she's pretty tough on clay?

I don't know about AMG, but if so, then it's a tough draw.

However Van Harpen says he wants to make clay Maria's favourite surface. This is interesting - he obviously believes she can do better on clay than on Hard Courts, but there are so few clay events. Some people reported that Maria looked very tired against Jelena, so if she's learnt her lesson and isn't going to play doubles next week, she might surprise a few.

All in all, I'd be satisfied with another 3rd round result.

Terrible draw. :o but we'll see how Maria does.

May 10th, 2008, 04:32 PM
Yes but she's only likely to play one week in Paris. QFs will be on the tuesday? So unless she does really well, expect her to have a week off.

Barcelona is another tier IV. I suppose she's done quite well in lesser events, but there aren't that many points available. She's choosing the lesser tournaments available it seems. She needs some practice on grass and if she doesn't win a couple of matches at Wimbledon I'd be disappointed. 3 wins against average players could get her about 150 points.

Anyway that ends my plan to go and see her in Birmingham next month. 2009 maybe?

She choosed Rosmalen instead of Eastbourne?
Why don't Ana and Maria just choose the same tournaments.

I still find it crazy what she's done the last weeks. Doubles and singles till the end in Estoril. Final in Warsaw and then the next day in Berlin already.
She's just getting better again, so please skip some doubles. Top 20 is close again so let that be the most important thing.
I hope she get a 3rd round in Rome. It doesn't look like she will beat Jelena. The Petrova match gives me confidence tough.
Some awesome points and she kept the erros low.
I rather see her play the bigger tournaments and instead of another Tier IV. She should win Barcelona then, but better be not to tired for Wimbledon.
Damn, she's coming to my country and I go to Eastbourne. :fiery:

Seems we have some new pics to look forward too.. hopefully it wasn't too much of a distraction ;)

The tug-of-war over time commitments is unlikely to have ended permanently, however, and Sharapova remains adamant that players have to stand up for their own rights under massive weekly pressure. The withdrawal of No.1-ranked Justine Henin from Rome means the WTA will still missing one significant name in the cast, but the shoot is going ahead in several locations around Rome. Ten players – Sharapova, Ana Ivanovic, Jelena Jankovic, Svetlana Kuznetsova, Serena Williams, Anna Chakvetadze, Venus Williams, Daniela Hantuchova, Maria Kirilenko and Zi Yan – are scheduled for the cameras. The campaign will eventually include about 32 players in all.

AFTER PETROVA HORROR

KIRILENKO IN SWEAT, RAIN AND SUN
Maria Kirilenko comes back from a one set deficit to win
The epic all Russian dual on the Stadio Pietrangelli, could very well be the longest tennis match in Roman history. It started yesterday at 1:11pm and ended today at 11:42 am. So after 22 hours and 31 minutes it's Maria Kirilenko who moves on to the next round. Ok, there were 2 rain delays and a night's sleep between the begining and the end of the match, but still that's a long time to keep your focus. And it usually promises for a difficult sleep, in between play time.

And it all started bad for Kirilenko, who dropped the first set 6-3. She was broken twice by Petrova. She managed to get one of two breaks back but had to conceed the set 6-3.

In the second set, Kirilenko was able to regain her tennis which allowed her to beat Petrova already last week in Rome. At 3-1 with the break, Kirilenko and Petrova went in to escape from the rain. An hour an dten minutes later, they came back to complete the second set which would be the turning point of the match. Kirilenko broke again at 4-2 to go up 5-2 and put herself in a comfortable position to seal the set. However Petrova did not see it that way. Instead she won the next 3 games breaking her compatriot twice to tie it up at 5. At that point it seemed as though the momentum was on her side and that she would would not let this one go to 3. Wrong! Kirilenko struck back, broke Petrova and closed the second set on her serve to tie the match at 1 set all.

Kirilenko had the good idea to break Petrova in the opener of the third and thus take a 2-0 advantage. At 2-1 15-30 Kirilenko, the rain invited itself once again, but this time in a monsoonlike manner. The time was 4:27 pm and play was interrupted only to resume today at 11:09 under a beaming sun. Kirilenko obviously had a better sleep than Petrova. And despite a debreak at 2-3, Petrova was forced to drop her serve yet again (6th time in the match) at 4-4 giving the other Russian Maria, equally as pretty, an opportunity to seal the match on her serve. And that is exacly what she did. So for Kirilenko tutti va bene.

amfiq
May 14th, 2008, 05:08 PM
She's got problems with serve against Petrova too.
But, finishing yesterday's game and playing another 3 sets match few hours later..well I was really concerned about her stamina when Medina took the second set.

I'm sorry guys but I believe that I'm the only person here who can't be that happy.
If I think about it, it's just awesome what Maria did today.
The last weeks are already crazy enough. Now 3 matches in one day and she won ALL 3 of them! I'm amazingly proud of her! Just pure class :worship::worship::worship:

:clap2::bigclap::bigclap:

I really am happy for her!

But Ana's loss really hurts too much :help:

Oh, Maria, what a great (but exhausting :help:) day this must have been for you! :D

And who said Maria would just crumble under pressure, when she saved 8 out of 8 BPs against AMG in the first set today? And coming back to win the third set convincingly (judging from limited match statistics alone, of course.) And against a clay court specialist like AMG at that. I'm just so proud of her right now. :bigclap:

Now I just hope she can get enough rest to come back fully recharged tomorrow. Then it's time to get a revenge and "kindly" direct JJ towards the exit. :armed: C'mon Maria!

Maria spent more than 5 hours on the court today (at least 0.5 hour to finish off Petrova + 3 hours to beat AMG + 1.5 hour in doubles).
Winning all three was quite impressive. But the people in charge of the scheduling aren't doing her any favors. :( I just hope she has enough left in the tank to give JJ a run for her money...
Go Makiri! :kiss::bounce:

She's first on court to give her enough rest for the doubles.
At this time Maria should skip some doubles and think more about her ranking now. It's going top 20 again and with the doubles it only gets it harder.

Yeah, she just didn't have enough energy to finish them off.

She really needs to think about pulling back with all the doubles, it's not worth it being this close to the top 20.

Oh dear

JJ gives away absolutely nothing for free, so Maria has to win the points all by herself. That's impossible without Maria being at her peak physically, and today she was just way too tired. Poor girl. Maria knows it, and that she has to gamble more to have any chance winning a point. That's also part of the reason why she makes so many unforced errors, I guess.

Better put this one behind you, rest up properly and come back stronger, Maria!

Maria needed to give Jankovic a tougher match that that. And now she's been routed by Jankovic one of the weakest mental players in women's tennis. Even though Jelena is a superb athlete and great defensive tennis player Maria should be able to have some impact on Jankovic's game. But she didn't. Maybe it's the red clay surface. Makiri would assuredly give Jankovic a tough match on hard court. And if Masha was really tired and didn't want to hurt her singles performance in Rome she should have withdrawn from doubles a couple rounds ago.

I still have nothing with doubles, so I even think it's better that she lost there as well.
This week of rest comes at the right time. I really think she's in a good shape and in a good form. If her mind is also in the right way then it can be a good tournament.
If you take off the points from next week and also RG, Maria will be 21st with only 12 points behind Top 20!
New highest ranking, here we come!
